A presente tese visa analisar um grupo específico de poemas de Dante Gabriel Rossetti (os chamados poemas de imagens), e pinturas e gravuras de sua autoria, a fim de mostrar como a ligação entre desejo físico e devoção espiritual ilustra a expressão de Rossetti como artista, e como ela ajuda a colocá-lo como uma figura de transição no sistema literário britânico. O desejo físico e a devoção espiritual são duas forças antagônicas que ocupam um espaço predominante na literatura e na imaginação vitoriana, e na obra de Rossetti temos o momento em que a Poesia Romântica Inglesa converge para o Modernismo experimental britânico. A tese deste estudo, portanto, é de que trabalhando com essas duas forças, Rossetti tornou-se um precursor do Modernismo na Grã-Bretanha. Este trabalho investiga, desse modo, como a tensão vitoriana entre devoção espiritual e desejo erótico é representada em pinturas de Rossetti, como as suas vozes poéticas lidam com estas questões, e que soluções são criadas nas obras do poeta-pintor. Para alcançar os objetivos acima, esta tese relata uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre a interação entre poesia e pintura e uma análise, de cunho psicanalítico, de obras pictóricas e poéticas de Rossetti. O primeiro capítulo apresenta um histórico da discussão sobre a relação entre poesia e pintura e um resumo dos conceitos freudianos a serem utilizados na análise. O segundo capítulo faz uma revisão da fortuna crítica de Rossetti e dos movimentos artísticos e literários aos quais ele é associado. O terceiro capítulo analisa um grupo das “obras duplas” de Rossetti (i.e., quadros e poemas), identificando como são construídas as imagens de devoção e desejo, e como elas se inter-relacionam. A conclusão estabelece a contribuição da obra poética e pictórica de Rossetti para o desenvolvimento dos sistemas literário e artístico britânico, à luz da relação dinâmica entre os aspectos de devoção e desejo presentes na sua obra, e analisa seu papel no cenário vitoriano. Apresenta também o papel de Rossetti na transição do Romantismo ao Modernismo britânico. A tese contém também dois apêndices: a) uma cronologia de fatos relevantes da vida de Rossetti e das obras aqui estudadas, e b) as “obras duplas” analisadas neste trabalho. / This dissertation analyzes a specific group of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s poems (the so-called picture poems) and pictures, in order to show how the connection between physical desire and spiritual devotion illustrates Rossetti’s expression as an artist, and how it helps to place him as a figure of transition in the British literary system. Physical desire and spiritual devotion are two antagonistic forces which occupy a predominant space in Victorian literature and imagination, and in Rossetti’s work we have the moment in which Romantic English Poetry melts into experimental British Modernism. The thesis of this study, therefore, is that by working with those two forces, Rossetti became a precursor of Modernism in Britain. This dissertation thus investigates how the Victorian tension between spiritual devotion and erotic desire is represented in Rossetti’s paintings and drawings, how the speakers in his poems deal with these issues, and what solutions are created in Rossetti’s works. In order to reach the objectives above, this dissertation comprises a bibliographical review of the relationship between poetry and painting, and a psychoanalytical analysis of pictorial and poetic works by Rossetti. The first chapter presents a historical account of the discussion on the relationship between poetry and painting, as well as a summary of the Freudian concepts to be used in the analysis. The second chapter reviews Rossetti’s critical fortune and presents the artistic and literary movements with which he is associated. The third chapter analyses a set of Rossetti’s double works (i.e. pictures and poems), identifying how the images of devotion and desire are built and how they interrelate within the works. The dissertation conclusion establishes the contribution of Rossetti’s poetic and pictorial works to the development of the British literary and artistic systems in light of the dynamic relationship between the aspects of devotion and desire in his work, and analyses his role in the Victorian scenario. Rossetti’s role in the development from British Romanticism to Modernism is also presented. The dissertation has two appendixes: a) a chronology of relevant events in Rossetti’s life associated with the works studied here, and b) the double works analyzed in this dissertation.

El presente artículo, inserto en el marco de los estudios cidianos, se propone señalar la existencia de una fuerte impronta del culto a la Virgen María en el Poema de Mio Cid (PMC), a partir del cual se articulan las escenas bélicas del poema y que se presenta como una proyección de las intenciones expansionistas de Castilla en el contexto de las guerras de reconquista española. Asimismo, se pretende demostrar la marcada influencia francesa en el culto mariano, que se puede apreciar a lo largo del texto, y su adopción por parte de la religiosidad peninsular, en particular, en relación con la ideología de cruzada que coincide con la cambiante noción de reconquista y se constituye como uno de los motores del poema. / This paper, inserted in the framework of the Cid studies, aims to identify the existence of a strong presence of the cult to the Virgin Mary in the Poema de Mio Cid (PMC), which articulates the battle scenes of the poem and is presented as a projection of Castile’s expansionist intentions in the context of the wars of Spanish reconquest. Likewise, it seeks to demonstrate the strong French influence in the Marian cult, which can be seen throughout the text, and its adoption by the religious Peninsula, particularly in relation to the ideology of crusade that matches the changing notion of reconquest and constitutes one of the main motives of the poem.

Arduous and joyful testimony of an artistic - and spiritual life - creative process undertaken, resulting in the short film on video Natura fulgens, as part of the fruits, after intense dedication and cultivation of the psychic landscapes, here performed via Active Imagination 1 and Contemplative Prayer 2. The Spiritual Canticle of St. John of the Cross and the loving qualities of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Stella Maris, Pulchra ut Luna and Domus Dei 3 have been invaluable sources of inspiration, guiding stars. Improvisation in dance, body awareness practices and free course poetic writing, which gathered the images emerged, were parts of the process. In the short film, the theme of the soul's journey in search of a return to the Divine Presence, true source of Living Water, works together with the assumption of the creative body, like domus 4 of the Heart of God in time. In the theoretical incursions, the theme of the cross and redemption - of the human look, of the produced images, of the imagination - precedes and illuminates the realization. No decorrer do trabalho de pesquisa conclui-se que a devoção à Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte revelou-se como uma reconstrução cultural, dando um novo significado à questão da finitude humana. / This paper has got as theme the devotion to “Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte” in the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil) during XVIII and XIX centuries. The devotion was used as a strategy to soften the ancient fear of death, strongly linked to the imaginary collective. Look up to realize the devotion as result of a process whose roots ascend to the imaginary medieval, worked with the idea that Catholicism, the pastoral politic from the church and the society in a general view, had been influenced by the remains of deaths’s fear. Concerning the used sources, it divides in primary manuscripts sources, primary printed sources and a support bibliography. It tries to compare the informations founded in a many documents from that time with consulted bibliography. This study allowed us to understand how people are able to input new meanings and other significations to stipulated practices. To the people that lived in Minas Gerais in the XVIII and XIX centuries religiosity was in depth than appearance or the other exterior aspects from the faith. Religiosity had an intense and deep meaning, it disclose interlaced with quotidian.

The State became secular and the Church, an independent institution. As a consequence, the Church was strongly influenced by the romanization movement, characterized by more control of the Roman Cúria on the Church in Brazil. Simultaneously with the development of romanized catholicism, expressions of faith and popular devotions multiplied in various places in the country, necessitating new directives by the Church. In this context, the work of some congregations like the Fathers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was remarkable. Our study analyzes the pastoral work of one of their members, Fr. Francisco Geraedts. With carism, creativity and dynamism, he accomplished a formidable work in the Parishes of Colônia Leopoldina (AL) and Água Preta (PE). The incentive to devotions and the arts, united to his missionary spirit were important components in the activites of this Priest who even today, is considered to be a popular saint by the people of those communities. / A proclamação da República, no Brasil, ocasionou mudanças na relação entre a Igreja e o Estado, dentre as quais a dissolução do Padroado. O Estado se outorgou laico, e a Igreja passou a ser uma instituição independente. Em consequência, a Igreja foi fortemente influenciada pelo movimento da romanização, caracterizado por um maior controle da Cúria Romana sobre a Igreja no Brasil. Ao mesmo tempo em que se desenvolveu um catolicismo romanizado, expressões de fé e devoções populares multiplicaram-se em diversas localidades do país, exigindo novos direcionamentos por parte da Igreja. Nesse contexto, foi marcante a atuação de algumas congregações, como a dos Padres do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, de quem analisamos a ação pastoral desenvolvida por um de seus membros: o Pe.Francisco Geraedts. Com carisma, criatividade e dinamismo, ele realizou um trabalho diferenciado nas Paróquias de Colônia Leopoldina (AL) e Água Preta (PE). O incentivo às devoções e à arte, aliado ao seu espírito missionário, foram importantes elementos na ação desse sacerdote, que, até os dias atuais, para as pessoas daquelas comunidades, é considerado um santo popular.

The dominance of the White Christ in Latin America has been used to lend “theological” support for social, racial, and colonial hierarchies of the Spanish in Ecuador. The rhetoric used to justify the blanqueamiento process continues to play an enormous role in Ecuadorian social mobility, and also determines how various ethnicities in Ecuador are governed and treated. The Indigenous and Afroecuadorian populations of Ecuador are subjected to significantly higher rates of violence, poverty, and disease than their Mestizo and White counterparts. Against the tide of this theological distortion, I will argue that the Black Christ of Daule subverts the dominant image of a White Christ along with its implied oppressive hierarchies, instead paving the way for a vision of liberation for Ecuadorian Catholics.

Until it's Safe to Return to My Body is an autofiction novella that follows the narrator as she recounts her tumultuous childhood and attempts to understand why she survived while her best friend did not.
