Identité, mémoire et dévotion dans les livres d’heures et de prières de l’entourage familial de Catherine de Clèves, duchesse de Gueldre (XIVe-XVe siècle) / Identity, memory and devotion in books of hours and prayer of the family circle of Catherine of Cleves, duchess of Gelderland (XIVth-XVth century)

Corti, Paola 15 December 2014 (has links)
The possibility to study Books of Hours and Prayer Books of a determined family group like deposits of memory and personal and lineage identity is the main goal of this thesis which is centered in the analisys of thirty books of religious carácter, being them mainly books of hours and prayer books, that belonged to members of the same family group extended through time (XIVth and XVth Centuries), that is to say, the family entourage of Catherine of Cleves, Duchess of Guelders (1417-1476). This family group is articulated as an ancestral community held by strong bonds of kinship as well as a devotional community. These bonds, that articulate the identity and the culture of the individual, are by different ways projected in the books of hours, a privileged instrument of private devotion. In this way, these ones, are constituted in actual deposits and vehicles of identity and the memory of their possessor. The present study is organized in three parts which progressively advance towards the definition and characterization of the family group to which belonged Catherine of Cleves, particularly marked by the influence of the House of Burgundy, passing through the definition of the corpus of manuscripts to enter, finally, in the analysis of the differents ways that permits to consider book of hours as a locus of identity and memory (locus memoriæ).

Dévotion, ascèse et violence dans l’hindouisme sectaire : ethnographie d’une secte shivaïte du Bengale / Devotion, asceticism and violence in sectarian Hinduism : ethnographical study of a Bengali Sivaïte sect

Voix, Raphaël 09 December 2010 (has links)
Cette conception singulière de l’ascétisme prend source dans la culture tantrique bengalie, laquelle tient la force pour une manifestation de l’Énergie divine (śakti) et le Maître pour une divinité incarnée / Founded in 1955 by a Bengali civil servant, Ananda Marga, the "way of bliss", is a Hindu sect with worldwide organization and involved in missionary activities in a great number of countries. In the religious landscape of contemporary India, it is distinctively characterized by the violence for which its followers have been accused. The ethnographical research carried out among this sect, combined with the analysis of its internal literature and the collection of testimonies of former disciples shows that this violence can be explained by the political aspirations of its founder and its members as well as by instability of its economic base. But it can also be explained by two interrelated processes: the profound change in the person of the disciples and a radical transformation of the society. By submitting himself voluntarily to psychological and physical violence, a disciple tries to go over the limitations of ordinary existence. However, he frees himself from this world so that he can be in exclusive service to his Guru and his mission in this world. With such a purpose, acts of extreme violence appear as expressions of devotional fervour pushed to its climax. The source of this peculiar conception of asceticism can be traced in Bengali tantric culture, for which the force represents a manifestation of divine energy (śakti) and the Guru represents an incarnate deity

Salvador

L'Ordre des Prêcheurs au miroir de l'estampe française et flamande (1594-1720) / The Order of Preachers through the Mirror of French and Flemish Engravings (ca. 1594-1720)

Rousseau, Claire 29 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the representation of the members of the Dominican Order as found in seventeenth century engravings. It seeks to examine the role of the French and Flemish engravers commissioned by the Order of Preachers in order to stress its social and moral importance. The engravings are an integral part of an artistic heritage with his own language, challenging our perception of the Dominican story, and more generally of the history itself. This has enabled us to question the contribution and the capacity of images either to reflect or to distort, like a mirror, the spiritual life and the theological debates in both the Church and in society during the seventeenth century.

Zbožné dary v českém středověku / The Pious Gifts in the Czech Middle Ages

Vašek, Zdeněk January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the gifts of Czech and Moravian nobility to the church during the High Middle Ages. The pious gifts (Donations) are fundamental for the understanding of medieval devotion and for some aspects of medieval society. In the Middle Ages, the last wills and testaments expressed people's wishes, attitudes and intentions with respect both to these worldly and other matters. They express attitudes to other family members, to property, to life and death, to community and social groups, to the Church, to Saints and to God. The pious donations, support for the poor and the burial near Saints open up the gates to Heaven. But the pious donations are not only a part of one's care for the soul and redemption in the Middle Ages. The donations have complicated background. These gifts expressed religious, economic, political and representative intentions of the donors. The Pious gifts are a good tool for research of this part of society. The main aim of thesis is to describe the pious gifts given by the Czech and Moravian nobility from 1200 till mid-14th century. The Thesis based on the analysis of individual donations describes the spectrum of motivation for these gifts and also to describe the function which gifts had in society.

José Carlos de Lima Filho 03 April 2012 (has links)
The study of religiosity and of religion in the feast is crucial to the understanding of myth, ritual and symbols inserted in devotion and promise to the saint, taking as inspiration the focus point of the rituals, especially the ritual procession, or even touring runs through the twenty-first century, even at such desecration. The purpose of this research is to reflect on the shifting ritual, different expressions such as gestures, silence, clothing characterized, objects, banners and sounds that are moving the close relations between the pilgrim (devout and/or curious) and the saint. To make this reflection based we decided to depart from a field research for five days, along with visitors, devotees promisers, trying to gather free and spontaneous information, adding to the bibliography, dealing with myth, ritual and symbols used by the walker in the procession of St. Lucy. The objective is to point the name of the various expressions of religious feast of the Patron Saint; to emphasize the importance of the rites as itinerant religious phenomenon in a secularizing society, reflecting the open air rite from a close relationship between the believer and the divine; to understand syncretism and the notion of sacred, using the methodology of participant observation on the feast of St. Lucy in Mossoró (RN)

Andrade, Edla Tuane Monteiro 22 March 2018 (has links)
In 1890, in Brazil, the powers of the State and Church are separated. The Romanization process made official a change of attitude of Catholicism in the face of the problems that had arisen during the Old Republic, in which it sought to broaden its pretensions of influence over society. Among the ambitions to be achieved are: the importation of European Religious Orders and Congregations (Salesians), the installation of a new devotional configuration in the mold of Roman Catholicism; the propagation of a network of private education institutions to form elites. In Sergipe, we analyze the unfolding of the process of Romanization before the establishment and development of the Salesian Congregation, through educational practices and the diffusion of the Devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians. In the Brazilian territory, devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians is widespread and devoted in its basic regions, cities and states. Based in the field of Cultural History, with an emphasis on History and Religion, this research aims to make an analytical study from the History and Salesian Memory, between 1902 and 1958, including the private and family devotional system, and how it was established in the social and history of sergipanos. Understanding this way, the role of Salesian Education, strategic form of diffusion of the process of romanization. The research deals with the concepts of religious experience as an object in the field of history (CERTAU, 1996), representation (CHARTIER, 1990) and symbolic power / religious field (BOURDIEU, 2004). Methodologically, the work consists of the analysis of sources on the presence of the Catholic Church in Sergipe in diverse institutions and places of memory.

The festivities in honor to Our Lady of the Rosary had constituted the main devotional event organized by black friaries in Colonial Brazil. The friaries were dynamizing axes of a peculiar way of catholic living – of a layman Catholicism that has marked the religious background of Minas Gerais indelibly. At the time of festivities, in these friaries black kings and black queens were enshrined and celebrated to the sound of music, songs and dances performed by the "brothers of the Rosary". This kind of religious experience has remained rooted in the life of the devotees of the "Mother of the Rosary" which still peculiarly praising in various parts of Brazil. However, this africanised catholicism performed by the congadeiros not rarely had caused tensions and disputes between Catholic hierarchy and congadeiros. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Dom Cabral, the Belo Horizonte´s bishop, decreed the abolition of Reinado throughout the diocese. This interdiction taken by Dom Cabral is located within the so called Ultramontane Reform, which started to being implemented in Brazil in the midnineteenth century and reached the first half of the twentieth century. In this contexture, we intend to map the action of groups and specific individuals involved in this process in order to delineate the diversity of experiences and the peculiarities involved in the implementation of Ultramontanism guidelines, specifically in the ambit of chapelry in Itaúna/MG and in what concerns to the Reinado´s prohibition. We had emphasized the ways of Reinado´s insertion in Catholic Church during the twentieth century and the ways of redrawing catholicism by the congadeiro´s experience.
