Noisefold

Lewis, Robert 12 1900 (has links)
This documentary film follows the group NoiseFold as they rehearse and perform their unique style of interactive video art before an enthusiastic audience. Originally hailing from the vibrant art community in Santa Fe, New Mexico, founders David Stout and Cory Metcalf return home to prepare for a special performance along with the addition of collaborator and cellist, Frances-Marie Uitti. Shot in black and white, the film aesthetically borrows from early cinema and incorporates a blend of cinéma-vérité and direct cinema styles for the purposes of creating a film that is both visually and sonically rich.

Cinema e realismo: Frederick Wiseman / Cinema and realism: Frederick Wiseman

Scarpa, Paulo Cesar Almeida 13 September 2012 (has links)
Ela narra, ela fala e ela argumenta. / In this thesis I investigate, by means of a sociology of cinema, a selection of films by the American filmmaker Frederick Wiseman (1930-). Being a documentary filmmaker of great importance for what became known as direct cinema or cinema vérité, a cinematographic trend that, by means of certain formal devices the absence of voice-overs, interviews of inter-titles leads to a strong impression of realism. Thereby, I intended to not only better comprehend Wisemans production as well as some considerations on the narrative constructions in his films, but also to consider some of the relations between cinema and realism. While I aim to bring forth a debate regarding this rarely discussed director within the Brazilian literature, I here analyze eight of his films, divided in three different themed topics: hospitals, military and leisure. The analysis was done by means of a sociology of cinema, which understands that the investigation must begin with the film itself, understanding it as a piece of work and as the main source of information. In this thesis, the manner by which Wiseman crafted images and narrative over the course of his filmography is seen as an answer to one of the questions that permeates documentary cinema, namely, on how to depict and detail reality. With this in mind, we can say that the observational camera does not merely observe. It narrates, it speaks and it argues.

More specifically, it analyses the dialogue that is established between both parts. Underpinned by theories and concepts by Brazilian and foreign documentary genre scholars Fernão Pessoa Ramos, Jean-Claude Bernardet and Bill Nichols , this work also examines the matter of the production of the documentary s truth, as such a meeting intermediated by the camera and proposed to a spectatorial reading could guarantee it. Inseparable from this first interrogation, there is a second one that refers to the witnessing subject s freedom and to the ethics of these exchanges. The selection of the corpus privileged those films which characters seem to have their singularities preserved in the situation of interaction in which they are engaged. Parallel to that and opportunely, a brief history of the documentary in Brazil, under the influx of Italian neorealism, direct cinema and cinema vérité, which molded in it its most remarkable features, is presented. Methodologically, it is a documental and bibliographical research. As a result, it is possible to assure that the corpus analysis especially of these two important examples of this genre, Viramundo (1965), by Geraldo Sarno, and Jogo de Cena (2007), by Eduardo Coutinho has evinced different models that present actors have to convey with words / A presente dissertação tem por objetivo o estudo das relações entre o documentarista e sua personagem.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Arquivototal.pdf: 3674897 bytes, checksum: d8194a62115dc46fb2133ad516520638 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-17 / In this research, we seek to comprehend how occurs the arrival and difusion of an approach mode of the real, the so called direct cinema, with its sound record stylistic synchronous to the image, on the documentary from Paraiba, from the late 70s. This style stood out for giving people voice so they could talk about themselves to the cinema, revealing, this way, a language sensitive to the social matters, to the political problems, to the gender and identity matters, beside the many cultural manifestations. We discussed the role of UFPB's Cinematographic Documentation Core (NUDOC) as a formation agent of new directors, from the exchange with Paris Varan Association (Ateliers Varan), promoting internships in direct cinema in João Pessoa and Paris, thus providing a technical, cultural and theorical baggage consistents to the new directors. On the scope of our research, we conceptualized, initially, the documentary against its stylistic ways and delimitations of a representation field. Right next, we discussed the direct cinema, its approaching strategies of the real and its precursors in Paraiba, the consolidation of a style (the expositive mode on the paraibano documentary), NUDOC's role on the difusion of the direct and finally the stylistic of the direct in Paraiba: from the 80s until nowadays. For this, we based our analysis on the main theories of the documentary study, on the productions study about the Super-8 mm and the direct cinema made in Paraiba, on the interviews and notes produced along the research, discussing the language, the technology, the stylistic resources used in its historical context. These productions contribute with the identity formation of the local cinema, influencing new generations of directors. Lastly, we will demonstrate our considerations about the stylistic procedures used in the direct e, this way, contribute with a new look about the study of the audio-visual narratives apllied to the making of the documentary in Paraiba.

Cardoso, Ana T?zia Patr?cio de Melo 04 October 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaTPMC_DISSERT.pdf: 1347609 bytes, checksum: 09687f612d26a6b88d4b61ce1a877abf (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-10-04 / This dissertation presents a reflection upon the notion of event, inspired by the contributions of Edgar Morin to the thinking of the present. The research analysis this notion particularly from the experience of the documentary titled Sangue do Barro, which was the winner of the 4th edition of DOCTV, in the federal state of Rio Grande do Norte in 2008. The study focuses on how facts from daily life can be approached by the documentary making process, and how in this process the questioning of facts leads to the questioning of social realities. In this perspective, through the illustrative case of Sangue do Barro, the research develops the hypothesis of how in the documentary process, which aims at revealing a particular history, is the revealing of the particular able to reflect the universal. The dissertation thus assumes this situation as precisely the configuration of the sociology of present, proposed by Edgar Morin. Furthermore, along with the theoretical premises of the sociology of the present, the research performs a brief historical analysis of documentary practices, Brazilian audiovisual public policies, and it also discusses the technical contributions of several contemporary film makers and contemporary thinkers, such as Jean Rouch, Bill Nichols, Ismail Xavier, Consuelo Lins, Gilles Lipovetsky, Jean Serroy, Michel Foucault, Alfredo Pena-Vega, Nicole Lapierre, etc / A presente disserta??o de mestrado consiste na reflex?o sobre a no??o de acontecimento, ? luz do pensamento de Edgar Morin, particularmente refletida na experi?ncia do document?rio Sangue do Barro, vencedor da quarta edi??o do DOCTV, no Rio Grande do Norte, em 2008.

Laporte-Rainville, Luc 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation, juxtaposing modernity and postmodernity to Pierre Perrault’s documentary movies, will define what we understand from those philosophic concepts. Influenced with Les Lumières, modernists have always considered necessary to put forward scientific technology progress to reach universal beatitude. For them, science is the key to society’s salute and rationalism. The problem with this process is that all thinking dissociating from rationality brings its immediate annihilation by progress and “over-progress” domination. Far from us to say that modernity needs to be forbidden but maybe it would be time to call into question some of these concepts. Popularized by Jean-François Lyotard, postmodernity criticizes the exaggerated science domination into trying to understand our world and wants to find solutions to counter the problem. Yet, there are other ways to apprehend this world of ours, like myths and believes. These irrational stories often reveal important moral, ecologic or spiritual values. The works of Perrault abound with community stories to refer to and we have chosen two pictures that are obvious examples. Le goût de la farine (1977) and Le pays de la terre sans arbre ou le Mouchouânipi (1980) present Innus’ traditions opposed to progress dictatorship. This same opposition allows the movie director to create a critical thinking about this modernity (in brief, a postmodernist thinking).

American myths on screen and in literature : an artistic and anthropological dynamic for Quebec ?

Delieuvin, Anaïs 08 January 2016 (has links)
American myths generate recurring symbols and stereotypes in the collective imagination. In Quebec literature, the use of these myths ignores ideology, favouring the founding act of a new mythology. Quebec myths firstly distinguished themselves from American myths, carrying with them a critical perspective on the globalising process driven by the American territory. In developing their national literature, Quebec authors from the Quiet Revolution shaped new interpretations of American myths. Americanness offers changing anthropological perspectives for the adaptation of myths into film and literature. The myth as Roland Barthes defines it, enables a contemporary interpretation of each Quebec myth you can find in this study. Thus, the corpus in my dissertation is made up of Quebec and American works, movies directed by Denys Arcand and Clint Eastwood and novels or argumentative essays by the quiet author who is the subject of this dissertation, Jacques Godbout as well as Jacques Poulin, Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, Antonine Maillet, Anne Hébert and Jack Kerouac.

Formas de produção da \"Realidade\" no modo de representação observacional: uma análise do cinema direto norte-americano dos anos 1960 e de filmes brasileiros dos anos 2000 / Methods of production of reality in mode of representation: an analisys of american cinema of the 1960\'s and brazilians films of 2000\'s

Jefferson Gomes Teixeira Guedes 10 November 2011 (has links)
This work analyzes as certain films of the observational mode of representation are capable of provoking in the spectator the impression of glimpsing the reality itself on the screen in two periods and particular contexts: in the 60s, when the Direct Cinema appeared in the United States around the Drew Associates, and in the years 2000, through two Brazilian documentaries.
