The Effect of Training on Haptic Classification of Facial Expressions of Emotion in 2D Displays by Sighted and Blind Observers

ABRAMOWICZ, ANETA 23 October 2009 (has links)
Abstract The current study evaluated the effects of training on the haptic classification of culturally universal facial expressions of emotion as depicted in simple 2D raised-line drawings. Blindfolded sighted (N = 60) and blind (N = 4) participants participated in Experiments 1 and 3, respectively. A small vision control study (N = 12) was also conducted (Experiment 2) to compare haptic versus visual learning patterns. A hybrid learning paradigm consisting of pre/post- and old/new-training procedures was used to address the nature of the underlying learning process in terms of token-specific learning and/or generalization. During the Pre-Training phase, participants were tested on their ability to classify facial expressions of emotion using the set with which they would be subsequently trained. During the Post-Training phase, they were tested with the training set (Old) intermixed with a completely novel set (New). For sighted observers, visual classification was more accurate than haptic classification; in addition, two of the three adventitiously blind individuals tended to be at least as accurate as the sighted haptic group. All three groups showed similar learning patterns across the learning stages of the experiment: accuracy improved substantially with training; however, while classification accuracy for the Old set remained high during the Post-Training test stage, learning effects for novel (New) drawings were reduced, if present at all. These results imply that learning by the sighted was largely token-specific for both haptic and visual classification. Additional results from a limited number of blind subjects tentatively suggest that the accuracy with which facial expressions of emotion are classified is not impaired when visual loss occurs later in life. / Thesis (Master, Neuroscience Studies) -- Queen's University, 2009-10-23 12:04:41.133

Lavinamųjų klasių mokinių, turinčių vidutinį intelekto sutrikimą, piešinių temos ir vaizduojamų objektų ypatumai / The thames of drawings and depicted objekts of the students having the average mental disorter and undergoing the developmental taching and learning approach

Šarkienė, Kristina 20 June 2012 (has links)
Dailės terapijos mokslinės literatūros analizė parodė, jog sutrikusį intelektą turintys vaikai piešia nekreipdami dėmesio į realų objekto vaizdą, nepastebi esminių detalių, nesuvokia objektų tarpusavio ryšių. Tokių vaikų piešiniams būdingi šablonai, apimantys tiek besikartojančią temą, tiek pasikartojančius tuos pačius objektus. Piešinių stereotipiškumas atspindi vaikų reakciją į supantį pasaulį, kur dėmesys fiksuojamas ties aktualiu, keliančiu rūpestį išgyvenimu. Dažniausiai piešiami objektai – namas, medis, žmogus. / The analysis of the art therapy’s scientific sources has revealed that the children having mental disorder draw without focusing on a real image of the object, they don’t pay attention to essential details, don’t realize the existence of the relationship between the objects. The drawings of these kids have got typical patterns with a recurring theme and repeated objects in their pictures. The stereotypical drawings reflect the kids’ reaction to the surrounding. Their attention concentrates on the urgent emotionally stressful experience. The most common objects in such pictures are houses, trees and people.

Thinking, small group interactions, and interdisciplinary project work

Ng, D. K. E. January 2008 (has links)
Interdisciplinary Project Work (PW) was introduced as an educational initiative in Singapore schools from primary to pre-university levels in 2000. PW was posited to (a) enhance perceptions and use of inter-subject connections in real-world problems, (b) promote knowledge application, and (c) provide a platform for the use of thinking skills. The main goal of this thesis is to explore how these objectives are inter-related with factors influencing the quality of group collaborative mathematical thinking processes and mathematical outcomes during a mathematically-based interdisciplinary project. In this study, high quality mathematical thinking processes occur when the flow of group interactions is purposefully directed towards the enhancement of mathematically accurate, logical, and reasonable outcomes. / A Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Design consisting of consecutive quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis procedures was used to answer the seven research questions in the study. A researcher-designed mathematically-based interdisciplinary project was implemented over 14-15 weeks with 16 classes of students (aged 13-14) belonging to two educational streams (higher and average-ability) in three Singapore government secondary schools. No teaching intervention was administered. Six scales were developed for pre- and post-project measurements of students’ mathematical confidence, perception of the value of mathematics, and perception of the interconnectedness of mathematics (N = 398). Ten student-group cases (n = 38) were selected for further in-depth qualitative data collection procedures pertaining to the nature of mathematical knowledge application, use of metacognitive monitoring and regulatory strategies, and core thinking skills application during three tasks in the interdisciplinary project. / The findings of this study clearly demonstrate the complexities of using PW to promote holistic and connected use of knowledge. Five substantial contributions to research on interdisciplinary learning arise from the thesis:1. An empirical framework synthesising factors influencing the quality of group collaborative mathematical knowledge application processes and outcomes was developed.2. The social influence of the group member activating applications of core thinking skills and metacognitive monitoring and regulatory strategies is a mediating factor influencing the flow of cognitive-metacognitive group interactions, and therefore, the quality of collaborative mathematical knowledge application processes and outcomes.3. Leaders of high-stream groups who were socially non-dominant but mathematically active were more likely to apply a higher frequency of core thinking skills than group members in other roles (i.e., questioner, recorder, and encourager) during a mathematically-based interdisciplinary project.4. The types and complexities of mathematical knowledge and skills applied during a mathematically-based interdisciplinary project did not correspond with stream.5. Whilst students were more able to appreciate the use of mathematics for inter-subject learning after participating in a mathematically-based interdisciplinary project, their beliefs about inter-subject connections and efforts at making these connections only marginally changed. These outcomes enhance our understanding of the challenges involved in the successful use of interdisciplinary tasks with middle school students and provide focuses for future teacher facilitation of mathematical learning during interdisciplinary education.

Borges, André Luiz de Biagi 30 August 2013 (has links)
Couple therapy, influenced by the discourse of social constructionism in its theorethical multiplicity, emphasizes the use of language as the builder of reality. However, it typically restricts its interest to the resources of verbal language, devoting little attention to other linguistic forms. Considering the possibility of contributing to this knowledge, we propose the inclusion of drawings as a language resource for therapeutic practices, increasing the understanding of the use of the language in a responsive-relational joint action for construction of meanings. Thus, this study aims at understanding the relational processes of meaning co-construction through the creation of drawings, in the context of Couple Therapy, seeking, in a special way, to analyze the implications of the use of drawings in the construction of change narratives of oneself and the marriage relationship. The study was carried out by way of video recordings of the therapy sessions of three couples, in 10 weekly sessions in a social clinic context. The analysis of the data, based on the constructionist version of social poetics, included transcripts of all sessions, followed by readings that allowed for the identification of different uses of the drawings. From the analysis of the drawings produced by the three couples, we identified drawing as a creative resource to: (a) facilitate conversation hampered by tension, (b) signal focus and selection of oscillatory conversation, (c) explore what has not yet been said in conversation, (d) strengthen the descriptions and narratives created in conversation and (e) summarize the assessment process. The detailed analysis of the therapeutic process of one of the couples, which presented a greater variation of elements referring to individual and marital aspects, showed that the practice of drawing in marital therapy creates participatory contexts in which spouses could feel safe to engage in the creative process, with inventive possibilities of one coming to be desirable and satisfying. In this way, the drawings became a propitiatory resource in bringing life to the use of the word, as well as promoting other forms of speech, freed from the captivity of the usual modes, normalized within human relationships. In couple therapy, drawings are possible as a new part of our language which incorporated with the usual and within the same, allows for the learning of new gestures and the production of new meanings.

Cidade, Mariana Kuhl January 2017 (has links)
Jewelry has been developed along with new technologies and improvements in manufacturing processes, thus reflecting changes in society and industry. Certain gemstones, such as agate, have been processed for the manufacture of ornaments and adornments, however, some characteristics of the material remain little studied, such as modifications on its microstructure during processing. Among the new processing technologies for agate is CO2 laser engraving. The technology is associated with certain superficial modifications in the gemstone through the generation of a secondary porosity, due to the material having a natural porosity in a micron scale. During engraving, several parameters can be set to improve the processing result. Thus, a universal standardization of vector drawings can facilitate the execution of the engraving, mainly with the use of filled forms, usually performed with JPEG bitmaps type images. Aiming to study the effects of laser on the material, this research presents a threedimensional, non-invasive, and high-resolution analysis of an engraved agate sample through qualitative and quantitative studies based on X-ray computerized microtomography. Results showed that the effects of secondary porosity, thermal expansion cracks, and fractures occur mainly due to the presence of water within the sample, both natural and derived from chemical reactions due to the laser heating. Removed material volumes by expulsion and vaporization were quantified and weighted with respect to the distance moved by the beam. After the understanding of the effects, standardization analyzes of different spacings were made for the engraving of simple and/or complex, open and/or closed, and filled forms, with contact profilometry and microscopies. Standardization was used as the basis for a patent deposit.
