Editing the independent, digital feature film, mosaic

McMillan, Matthew Christopher January 2007 (has links)
The production of the independent, digital feature film titled Mosaic was performed on a very low budget. The design and implementation of the post-production of the film required consideration of budgetary constraints, and solutions to these constraints that would still allow the creative freedom of the editor and the director. The technical design was based around digital filmmaking technology. The choice of this technology influenced how the editor was able to address aesthetic and technical challenges.

The muscular hyperactivity with or without occlusal changes can is a trigger of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Any change in the structures of the stomatognathic system can promote a functional imbalance of the jaw. The algometry pressure and electromyography has been used as methods of diagnosis and therapy control of the evolution of the muscles of mastication. Several treatments seek to reduce the symptoms characteristic of TMD by restoring the occlusal, among which worth mentioning the occlusal therapy through the plate interocclusal. One of the difficulties during the construction of the splint device is to determine its thickness. This criterion can influence the efficiency, performance of the function of relaxation and treatment of muscle pain provided by interocclusal devices. The objective of this study was to evaluate the thickness of the plate, consistency of the food and gender, in the electric activity and threshold of pain to the pressure (LDP) in the muscles to masseter and anterior temporal. patients in whom signs were established with thickness 3 and 6 mm. Medium were obtained from each side to work and working from records of electrical activity during mastication of two latex sensitivity threshold of the masseter and anterior temporal of all patients. After obtaining the data, the data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis, a 5% level of significance (p <0.05). It It was observed that the plates of different thicknesses (treatments) and the gender had not modified the electric activity, however the biggest consistency of the food provided higher electric activities. The threshold of pain to the pressure was modified with the use of the plates of different thicknesses only for the temporal muscle of the work side, as well as was superior for the men in all the muscles evaluated, however the mastication activity did not influence in the LDP

The roots of remembrance : tracing the memory practices of the children of Far East prisoners of war

Smyth, Terry January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is about the children of former Far East prisoners of war (FEPOWs): their memories of childhood, how they fashioned those memories in adulthood, and the relationship between the two. The FEPOW experience reverberated through postwar family life, and continued to shape the lives of participants across the intervening decades. Although a great deal is now known about the hardships suffered by the men, captivity had a deep and enduring impact on their children, but their history is rarely heard, and poorly understood. In Roots of Remembrance I investigate the lives of these children through in-depth interviews, using a psychosocial approach to both interviews and analysis. By tracing intergenerational transmission through the life course, I show that the memory practices of the children of Far East POWs had psychosocial roots in the captivity experiences of their fathers. For some, childhood was coloured by overt physical or psychological trauma; for others, what passed as a ‘normal’ upbringing led later to a pressing desire to discover more about their fathers’ wartime histories. My research demonstrates the need for a more nuanced and holistic approach to understanding intergenerational trauma transmission within this particular group. I argue that participants made creative use of memory practices across the course of their lives to revisit, review and reconstruct their relationships with their fathers, in order to reach an accommodation with their childhood memories. Findings include the value of attachment theory in understanding the associations between childhood experience and later memory practices, the role of the body and other implicit means of transmitting trauma, and the need for a greater awareness of the impact of cumulative and complex trauma within these families. Finally, I conclude that the psychosocial methodology enabled me to access areas of subjectivity and intersubjectivity that might otherwise have remained in the shadows.

Ad Hoc Network Nodes Scheduling using DS and FH CDMA

Khan, Farhan, Ellahi, Muhammad Umer Khan and Noman January 2013 (has links)
Nowadays most communication networks like GSM, WLan or WiMAX are based on pre-existing infrastructure. These infrastructures are complicated, costly and difficult to deploy in very short time. Whereas Wireless Ad Hoc Networks are infrastructure-free self organizing networks which consist of co-operating nodes. These networks are highly desirable for various emerging applications for military and to extend the range and capacity of infrastructure based wireless networks. One critical issue that we face in Ad Hoc Network is the problem of scheduling. Scheduling algorithms in an Ad Hoc Network allows the nodes to share the wireless channel efficiently. But on the other hand, the scheduling algorithm needs to be easily implementable in a distributed fashion with little, if any, coordination between nodes in the network. Spread spectrum technologies allow interference averaging and therefore are employed in Ad Hoc networks. There are two major types of spread spectrum physical layer, which are frequency hopping (FH) spread spectrum and direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum. FH-CDMA divides the bandwidth into M sub channels, the receiver only sees the interference from the transmitter side which is on the same sub channel whereas in DS-CDMA we increase the spreading code M to decrease the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) requirement. The purpose of research is to study a hybrid spread spectrum based on physical layer, in which the direct sequence signal is also frequency hoped. The DS will reduce the region of dominating interferes, while frequency hopping will be used within this region intelligently and allow the dominating interferes to transmit on different frequencies. First the system bounds on the transmission capacity of the proposed scheme is evaluated, and than a comparative analysis of different multiple access schemes is done with our proposed model with respect to their transmission capacity to evaluate its performance.

Development and Testing of A Space-borne GPS Signal Strength Sensor

Lu, Dianhong 13 October 2003 (has links)
The Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite signals provide not only traditional radionavigation service but inexpensive and convenient radio beacons for signal propagation studies on ionosphere and atmosphere. This thesis describes the development and testing of a specialized GPS sensor which measures, plots and records real-time high-resolution L1 (1575.42MHz) GPS signal strength at a data rate of up to 10Hz. The instrument is based on an open architecture GPS receiver development kit that can be modified and rebuilt. The signal strength is defined as mean-square signal strength in the thesis. The coarse/acquisition code (C/A-code) correlation is applied and the raw correlation data from a GPS correlator chip is obtained to calculate the signal strength. The gain variation of the automatic gain control (AGC) in the GPS signal link is considered, and a model is designed and implemented in data post-processing to reduce the AGC distortion to GPS signal strength measurements. Speed limitation of 1,000 knots and height limitation of 60,000 feet are removed so that it can track spacecraft such as low earth orbit (LEO) satellite. Four testing plans are developed and conducted to test the GPS signal strength sensor. A GPS simulator is used and the testing results prove that the space-borne sensor is fully operational and the signal strength resolution can be smaller than 0.05dB. Additionally, a COM-port-to-TCP/IP GPS simulation remote control gateway is designed and implemented for the senor and the GPS simulator to conduct formation flying. A graphic user interface (GUI) program is also built to retrieve data from a commercial high-performance space-borne GPS receiver for comparison. A Red Hat Linux signal strength sensor based on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) PiVoT GPS receiver is achieved by modifications. The NASA PiVoT sensor, working together with the former signal strength sensor and the commercial space-borne GPS receiver, will strengthen our academic research strength in the studies on the ionospheric and atmospheric effects and irregularities which cause GPS signal degradation and scintillations. / Master of Science

Margarit Benavent, Vicente Juan 18 April 2023 (has links)
[EN] This doctoral thesis focuses on obtaining, via direct synthesis, nanocrystalline zeolite materials with improved physicochemical and catalytic properties compared to reference materials. For this, surfactants created specifically for each of the zeolite structures studied have been used, avoiding the use of post-synthetic processes that lead to a loss of crystalline material. In the first part of the work, the obtaining of the delaminated ITQ-2 zeolite by direct synthesis (DS-ITQ-2) through the use of various surfactants, being C16DC1 (NHexadecyl-N'-methyl-1,4-diazabiciclo[2.2.2]octane) with which the best results have been obtained. The influence of the length of the aliphatic chain and the concentration of the organic structure directing agent (OSDA) in the synthesis gel on the kinetics of the crystallization process and the implications on the physicochemical characteristics of the obtained material have been studied. By controlling the concentration of the surfactant in the synthesis gel, it has been possible to direct the degree of delamination of the final material. The physicochemical properties of the material considered optimal have been compared with those of the zeolite MCM-22, MCM-56 and ITQ-2, all of them with the same crystalline structure (MWW). Finally, the catalytic activity of the zeolite DS-ITQ-2 has been studied in two reactions, the alkylation of benzene with propylene to obtain cumene and the reaction of 2,5-dimethylfuran with ethylene to obtain p-xylene, obtaining excellent conversion and selectivity results in both cases. The second part of the thesis has focused on the preparation of ferrierite zeolite in its nanocrystalline form by direct synthesis using surfactants. Surfactants with three different polar parts, obtained from the corresponding amines used as OSDAs, have been studied. In addition, the effect of the chain length of the surfactant between 6 and 16 carbon atoms has also been studied. Modifying the parameters of the synthesis gel, such as the molar ratio between piperidine or surfactant and silica, has turned out to be decisive when it comes to achieving an optimal composition for obtaining nanocrystalline zeolite with the desired physicochemical properties. The optimization of the synthesis temperature and the introduction of seed crystals in the synthesis gel have allowed to improve the final properties of the material. The catalytic activity of nanoferrierites has been studied in two different reactions, the oligomerization of 1-pentene and the isomerization of 1-butene. The importance of reducing the size of the ferrierite crystal has been shown, obtaining materials with activity and selectivity much higher than those described in the open and patent literature. / Margarit Benavent, VJ.

Kupfer, Bettina 02 January 2025 (has links)
The work documents the practice of psychoanalytic care for children and adolescents in a refugee shelter and reflects on the possibilities and limitations of such „outreach psychoanalysis“in conflict resolution with refugees. In other words, it explores the extent to which psychoanalysis can be practiced in a precarious and vulnerable environment such as a refugee shelter and the extent to which children can benefit when a psychoanalytic child therapist is directly accessible and therapy sessions can take place without complications. The focus is on a detailed case presentation, framed by a reflection on theoretical and methodological prerequisites, whereby particular attention is paid to the necessary psychoanalytic attitude and the conditions of traumatic stress. Methodologically, the function of the „squiggle“ / scribbling game (Winnicott) is shown to be a relevant means of communication. The result of this documentation and reflection is a positive assessment of such a form of „outreach psychoanalysis“: children in the context of refugee accommodation need low-threshold psychoanalytic help to overcome their inner conflicts; they benefit from trusting communication in a protected (generally intermediate space) with a counterpart who meets them in an attitude of „scenic understanding“.
