Finding voice, being heard and living in the tension : novice nurse academics critical engagement with a problem orientated curriculum in the academic and practice setting

Davis, Kierrynn, University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury, Faculty of Agriculture, Horticulture and Social Ecology January 1993 (has links)
This thesis is an account of the lived experience of doing research in the critical paradigm in the context of the discipline of social ecology. It is a story with actors, a plot, and actions over time. The Worldview of social ecology has embedded within its epistemology the scope for the creative act of narrative, therefore this thesis is a critical conversation told in four voices. The research was embedded in critical social science methodology and method, and attempted to understand and transform the problematics concerning the social relations, practice, language and discourse which were uncovered when five novice nurse academics engaged in teaching a problem-orientated curriculum in the practice setting. It was a critical action research project based predominantly on the Kemmis and McTaggart Model (1988). The research also debated the nature of participative, collaborative action research undertaken in the context of gaining an educational qualification. Relevant to this point, two other contexts of the research were uncovered. The lived experience of ?doing? critical action research with colleagues and friends, in the context of gaining an educational qualification revealed both the praxis nature of ethical research and the reclaiming of an authoritative women?s voice in the academy. The ethical nature of research in critical social science, and the nature and role of human identity was explored in an effort to conceptualise both a methodology and a self identity which was embedded in a context of mutual growth. This growth was similar to Bookchin?s (1990) transitory states of ?becoming? what we wished to become in the academy. It was what is known in organisations as professional development. The author named this becoming, ?Finding a Women?s Voice and Being Heard?. Although ?finding voice? is situated in the personal, ?being heard? involves the ?not I? together with structural features of institutions. As a collaborative group, the participants actioned strategies in an attempt to deal with the structural limitations to our ?becoming?. These strategies, together with the consciousness raising nature of this particular action research project, enabled participants to speak of their own empowerment within an academic context in which they were often rendered powerless. / Master of Science (Hons) (Social Ecology)

Engaging with Motherhood: Gender and Sexuality in Environmental Justice

Snyder, Hannah M G 01 May 2012 (has links)
Despite the fact that women make up a large proportion of participants in the environmental justice movement, the movement is still framed in terms of race and class. This thesis investigates the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, and environmental justice. I explore the prominent rolls that women play in grassroots environmental justice movements and the look at the discourses that surround gender and environmental justice through a queer studies and ecofeminist lens. I argue that motherhood narratives—while powerful motivators for activists and effective tools for creating resistance—can create a rhetoric that is exclusionary to people with non-normative sexualities and support heteronormative structures which ultimately hurts the movement. I suggest a new rhetoric that embraces plurality of voices including voices of motherhood—one that is based on an understanding of the connection between the oppression of many groups of people, and that of the environment.

The female citizenship and the solution of the agricultural question. : A survey of Elisabet Tamm's ecofeminist ideas the years 1923-1936

Lindgren, Martina January 2014 (has links)
This master thesis is about one of the first female in the Swedish Parliament, Elisabeth Tamm (1880–1958), and her political articles in the magazine Tidevarvet. The aim of this study is to find similarities with Tamm’s political thoughts with the Ecofeministic theory. Due to women’s right to vote 1919 women citizenship was in a political debate. Tamm was one of many speakers and she combine the question with the Swedish agriculture and farming. Ecofeminism generally believe that women and nature are subordinate by the capitalist, patriarchal and Western society. This master thesis examine the degree to which Tamm’s political view coincides with the Ecofeministic perspective. The results which have been obtained through this study are that Tamm share a lot of the Ecofeministic view points and was before her time with these ideas. She also has the same belief concerning women and nature subjugation. The main difference between Ecofeminism and Tamm is the view of nature; Ecofeminism perceive nature as its own subject and not for human to control while Tamm view nature as something which human shall cultivate and cherish for future generations.   This study gives contribution to new knowledge for different interested parties. Ecofeminism is relatively new in science and I hope this conducted thesis has usability and will open up for future research and learn people of today more about our idea of nature and gender.

Feminist Decolonial Politics of the Intangible, Environmental Movements and the Non-Human in Mexico

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This study weighs the connection of environmental crisis with race and gender in different cases of environmental crisis and conflicts. The study documents how Indigenous cosmologies and cosmopolitics, and scientific arguments converge in unexpected alliances in the advent of environmental crises. This research focuses on specific instances, or situations related to environmental justice movements addressing the environmental crisis in Mexico (and its convergences to other similar cases). I examine and present a discussion of the research methodologies and methods used to study the ‘environment’ as well as indigenous cosmologies and cosmopolitics. With this, I embark on a research that includes feminist decolonial theory, eco-feminism and material feminisms into a larger project for autonomy and decoloniality. In particular, I discuss one of the concepts that have caught the attention of those studying race and ethnicity in the Americas: mestizaje as an ordinal principle in the context of Mexico. Also, I discuss the inscriptions of the mestiza body in relation to the materiality of race and gender in the context of Latin America. It is shown how the discourse of mestizaje is tangled with the idea of a modern civilization, such as in the Mexican state. Overall, this research analyzes different responses to environmental crises; from environmental activists, community organizers to plastic artists and scientific experts. Also, it includes a literary analysis of contemporary indigenous literatures to show how state sponsored violence and settler colonialism have an incidence in gender violence by placing the female body close to nature. As global environmental problems have risen, this research contributes to the understanding of the underlying factors in environmental crises and conflict that have been overlooked. Herein lies an important possibility to reach a broader audience in different disciplines, ranging from indigenous studies to the global politics of human rights. Furthermore, this research aims to contribute to the work of environmental activists, scholars and scientists with regard to the understanding of how different arguments are used in research and advocacy work, and how they can integrate an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach when addressing environmental justice cases. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Justice Studies 2016

This project demonstrates the relation between the environment and the female character inserted in the patriarchal system of the cacaueiran society, in the south of Bahia, in the beginning of the XX century. To achieve this objective, two philosophical lines will be used, namely: 1) The spiritualist ecofeminism, promoted by Maria Mies and Vandana Shiva; 2) the care ethics, created by Karen J. Warren. Amado's work will be analyzed with the goal of discovering the feminine behavior and pondering about the transgressor aspect of such a relation with the environment, reciprocal in its own nature, as the environment also manifest itself when it feels threaten by its dominator. For method of analysis, the bibliographical research of a wide-range of fields, including Literature, Sociology, Philosophy and Ecofeminism, was used in this study. The research is divided in three chapters. In the first, the novel Terras do sem fim will be characterized in the regionalist movement of the 1930s and the critical response of this work will also be used. The second chapter aims to justified and elaborate the ecofeminists principles used in this analytical and critical investigation. Finally, in the third chapter, the ecofeminists principles will be used to analyze the female characters and their transgressions connected to the environment, under the regime of the patriarchal system. The conclusion of the work tries to show that the novel Terras do sem fim has, in its literary structure, the opening of a critical discussion not presented in its time of publishing, bringing a wider perspective into the studies of Ecofeminism.

The doctoral thesis aims to analyze the author Hilda Hilst’s literary production in prose, mostly the texts Fluxo-Floema, A obscena senhora D, “Rútilo Nada”, and also her obscene trilogy, coming from a comprehension that expands the ordinary concepts of critics concerning this writer, linked only to a radicality and transgression discourse. In this aspect, the work was guided through a perspective which could problematize the posture found in Hilst’s texts, going beyond what was understood and already known about her production, and, this way, focusing the attention on elements which were inserted in a repertoire of traditionalist and immanentist designations, for example, the house and the family environment. Based on this assumption, it was noticed that the texts built an unusual mechanism of disruption as the idealistic legacy was not ignored by those designations, that is, their force in the existence was known and creative resistance was proposed. This way, Hilst approaches her production in prose to the ecofeminist academic movement, which also proposes an attitude of reframing not only in the environmental sphere, but also in the social and subjective ones. Regarding this, the thesis provides a discussion about the notion of “ecology” and shows how the expansion of its concept was used as a parameter to understand Hilst’s audacious procedure of disruption, taking into account the metaphysic character of the traditionalist constructions.

Förnybar energi ur ett kvinnligt och manligt perspektiv : En attitydundersökning med avseende på att kartlägga hur synen på fönybar energi påverkas av om individen är kvinna eller man / Renewable energy from a female and male perspective : An attitudinal study for identifying how the view on renewable energy is affected by whether the individual is female or male

Wärme, Josefin January 2013 (has links)
Abstract The extraction and usage of energy give rise to immense environmental problems which helps to accelerate climate change. Energy is an important resource for the community and there are a variety of different types of energy sources available, that are either classified as renewable or non-renewable energy sources. The usage of renewable energy sources cause less environmental impact than the usage of non-renewable energy, which in turn means that the energy’s strain on the environment is strongly affected by the type of energy source used. The aim of the study is to describe to what extent attitudes towards renewable energy are affected by whether the individual is male or female, by examining the hypothesis regarding how women have a closer connection to nature and to a larger extent shows on an pro-environmentally friendly behavior than men, and if it also can be detected on issues related to renewable energy and thus imply that women have a friendlier approach towards renewable energy than men. A number of ecofeminist believe that women have a stronger bond with the nature through her embodiment as a woman and by her maternal role, which according to previous research also leads to the fact that women shows on a more extensive environmental behavior.Through a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews has three female and three male respondents been asked questions with regards to the environment, individual responsibility and energy. All of the respondents have an understanding of the environmental problems that exist and what they are caused by, and that individual responsibility is of great significance for a reduced environmental impact, which enabled further evaluation of all respondents' views on renewable energy. Differences and similarities can be seen between women's and men's attitude towards renewable energy, but in the end, the similarities are too great and the differences too vague in order to be able to verify that women’s closer connection to the nature and their pro-environmental behavior means that they have a more positive attitude towards renewable energy than men. There is therefore no basis in my study to claim that attitudes towards renewable energy are affected by whether the individual is female or male.
