Ecumenism and theological convergence : a comparative analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne movement

Pruitt, Harold Edward 06 1900 (has links)
Ecumenism and Theological Convergence: A Comparative Analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne Movement." This thesis evaluates the Edinburgh 1910 World Mission Conference, the ecumenism that flowed from Edinburgh 1910, and its relationship to the ecumenical trends that exist within the Lausanne movement. Additionally, this thesis determines how ecumenism has attributed to a theological convergence, and then examines the impact of such theological convergence on the global church through parachurch organizations. It begins by laying the foundation for any theological convergence that existed at Edinburgh 1910. It then examines ecumenism within the Lausanne movement, theological significance of ecumenism, and its impact on the global church. Finally, the thesis explores the theological convergence within select parachurch organizations since Lausanne 1974 and analyzes the impact of theological convergence on the global church. The researcher of this thesis has surveyed several sources to determine the originality of this topic through search engines World Cat, World Cat Dissertations, Dissertations, Article First, ATLA Religion, Humanities Index, Humanities Abstract, Christian Periodical Index, Worldscope, and also significant works about Lausanne 1974. The search revealed nothing substantial concerning Lausanne’s impact on the Global Church through parachurch organizations, the researcher deems this thesis to be an original work. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Eu, tu e ele (a) - Diálogo ecumênico em São José dos Campos: Avanços, dificuldades, caminhos, perspectivas

Mortl, Maria Inez de Lima 03 June 2005 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T19:20:58Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 inez.pdf: 3302158 bytes, checksum: 49f159268867f2e50af0c92c607d6359 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-06-03 / The Christian churches, mainly the historical ones have, in the ecumenical dialog, the opportunity to live their faith, and to profess, in a non pre-conceptual manner, without proselytism and with the conviction that the God revelation as Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) is not restrict to any church exclusively. The theme ecumenism remains vital nowadays due to the cultural and religious plurality present in our society. The investigation s object of this work is the Movimento Ecumênico do Município (MEM) of São José dos Campos SP Vale do Paraíba region. Be part of this movement mainly the historical Christian churches, but are also present the Pentecostal and even the Neo-Pentecostal churches. This research had the objective to study the MEM in the period from 1999 to 2001, between clergy and laymen of the historical churches, focusing on the advances, difficulties, directions and the perspectives from this movement. In this analysis, I detected three ecumenical dialog models: theological-doctrinal ecumenism, institutional celebrative ecumenism and practical ecumenism. The work proposes to find possible solutions for the advances on the ecumenical dialog. The hypothesis is that maybe there is a deficiency of this advance on the ecumenical dialog due to the lack of a common ideal, i.e., lack of a united social action, which would characterize the Christians as authentic. The theoretical structure was based on studies of protestant and catholic theologians who approach the inter-clerical dialog, as well as information and positions from many churches and ecumenical organisms. For the churches historic that belong to MEM, as well as to discover their real difficulties, was accomplished interviews and research in the churches and municipal registry offices. The research, done under a scientific vision, can favor the comprehension that the true ecumenism begins through a concrete action, or, in other words, through practicing the Gospel. This process can lead the ecumenical movement to achieve its objective: the unity on the diversity for the world to believe . Therefore, it leads to the expansion of MEM in the region that belongs to and also its results can be projected in the environments on which is proposed this unity on the diversity / As igrejas cristãs, principalmente históricas, têm, no diálogo ecumênico, a oportunidade de viverem sua fé e a professarem, de maneira não preconceituosa, sem proselitismo e com a convicção de que a revelação de Deus como Trindade (Pai, Filho e Espírito Santo) não está restrita a nenhuma igreja de forma exclusiva.

: En frågeställning belyst av den ekumeniska utvecklingen i Uddevalla 1975-2000 / Renewal and Unity – opposites or partners : An issue highlighted by the ecumenical development in Uddevalla 1975-2000

Olsson, Arne January 2013 (has links)
During the last four decades of the 1900’s, the churches in Sweden faced major changes, both from a national and a local perspective. Two movements within Christianity played a major role in this development: the ecumenical movement and the charismatic movement. The encounters between the established churches and, in particular, the charismatic renewal movement was, however, not always friction-free. At times, they were quite belligerent. As a result, many relations between people and organisations were damaged, during the 80’s and 90’s. In addition to personal and collective grief, this implied a significant drain of resources. The aim of this study is to examine, from an ecclesiological perspective, what happens in the encounter between a renewal movement and churches in a local ecumenical context, and to highlight under what conditions these meetings lead to unity and division, respectively. The actors of interest to this study are (1) the renewal movement with its upholders, (2) the churches, with its ministers, and (3) leaders at district and national levels. The aim is to find patterns in their behaviour, as well as the consequences of these for the encounters between the renewal movement and the established churches in the area. The participants' ability to engage in active reconciliation appears to be an important factor, determining the direction of the correlation between renewal movements in relation to division and unity. A part of the aim is therefore also to examine the conditions and the occurrence of reconciliation processes, as well as the methodology used. The study is made from a local ecumenical perspective on the meeting between the renewal movement and the church. More specifically, the ecumenical development in Uddevalla, during its meeting with the charismatic renewal movement the years 1975-2000, is examined.

Les dissensions ecclésiales, un défi pour l'Église catholique : histoire et actualité / Church dissents : a challenge for the Catholic Church in past and present times

Berthe, Pierre-Marie 17 April 2018 (has links)
Ever since the inception of Christianity, the Church’s unity based on faith, worship and hierarchical communion with Peter’s successor has been faced with doctrinal or disciplinary dissents which entail institutional severances at times. Today, Catholics have difficulty speaking with one voice about essential questions, while at the same time the ecumenical dialogue is late inrestoring perfect unity between Christians. Those two sets of problems are tackled here in the light of history. Leading the reader on a long chronological path from Antiquity to modern times, this study examines the doctrinal, canonical and pastoral solutions applied along the centuries in order to deal with the crises arising inside the Church ; then it answers three questions in connection with present circumstances : What should be done to avoid new severances within the Church? How to react in front of conflictual situations? What way should be followed to reconcile Christians? While it takes courage and boldness to promote unity, the latter cannot be contemplated outside the truth revealed by Christ and tradition.

Amen in Old Testament liturgical texts : a study of its meaning and later development as a plea for ecumenical understanding

Flor, Elmer Nicodemo 11 1900 (has links)
Amen is the Hebrew word best known and most widely used in world religions even today. Its importance as a meaningful expression throughout biblical texts is given thorough study as well as its transmission throughout religious history. It has been transliterated and integrated into the prayers and liturgy of about every Christian church. In this thesis amen is traced down to its usage in Old Testament texts selected according to their liturgical setting. After examining the three sets of texts, progressive development stages have been produced. The first text of Deuteronomy 27 was basically a ceremony of civil nature for a Covenant commitment. All tribes of Israel were present and the amen response was stipulated to confirm their allegiance to Yahweh and to acknowledge the curses threatened. The second stage in the development of amen in Old Testament worship is an expected, not stipulated response to answer a doxology or a prayer. At this stage amen was pronounced by the worshipping congregation in cultic situations in general, particularly in the Psalms. A third and more developed liturgical response can be found in the spontaneous double amen spoken by the returnees from exile gathered for the reading of the Law session at Nehemiah's time. Amen had become a thriving force and a joyful outburst - not demanded, not simply expected, but spontaneous in the believers' response to Yahweh's guidance and love. The New Testament and Christians of all times inherited and adopted the same Hebrew word and sound of amen as confirmation and praise. A proposal is made in this study to set amen as a causal connection with the One who loved mankind first. The proposed derivation of amen from the Hiphil Imperative remits its origin to a causative plea, and persuades people to believe in what they have just heard or said, namely, that Jesus Christ is God's amen for the salvation of all mankind. Christians of all times and places should join in the praise of God through the same faith in His Amen. Thus amen becomes a binding concept for ecumenical understanding. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / D. Th. (Old Testament)

O PREGADOR SILENCIOSO: Ecumenismo no jornal Expositor Cristão (1886-1982) / The Silent Preacher: Ecumenism in the Expositor Cristão newspaper (1886-1982)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Suzel Magalhaes.pdf: 868719 bytes, checksum: 9e018992f176b05fd93b122cdb3f6b72 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-09 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Expositor Cristão, which is the official newspaper of the Methodist Church in Brazil, started in 1886, with what could be called an ecumenic proposition: it´s first name, Methodista Catholico (Catholic Methodist), uncovers the desire for universalism, as shown in the first number editorial. It´s creator, a north american missionary called John James Ransom intended a non sectarian doctrinarian and orientational newspaper, in accordance with the wesleyan tradition. But the Methodista Catholico had a short life: within less than a year it became the Expositor Cristão. The brazilian religious field was then under an apologetic controversy, with the insertion of mission protestantism, from anglo-saxon origin, opposing the Roman Catholicism. The name of the newborn newspaper was one more victim of the confrontations. This work put itself to evaluate how the newspaper treated the question of ecumenism since this period until the entry of the Methodist Church in the CONIC, National Council of Christian Churches, at the beginning of the decade of 1980. The research found that the deep rooted anti catholicism in brazilian Methodism at it´s prime never disappeared completely. Also realised that the Methodism was not immune to the conflicts that existed among the denominations of the evangelical world. In spite of the well acknowledged pioneering of the Methodist church in creating brazilian ecumenic organisations, ecumenism always faced internal barriers, more or less disguised. The newspaper Expositor Cristão, created to be a medium of information and doctrinarian formation, not always showed with the necessary clarity which meaning the Methodist Church confer to the word ecumenism and how the Church practices it. In some moments, the coexistence between ecumenism and anti ecumenism in the heart of the methodist field was not brought under the light of the debates of the newspaper, but remained hidden due to omissions and ambivalences.

José Carlos Stoffel 21 March 2006 (has links)
The present dissertation is a research about History, Theology and Practice of an ecumenical organism The Ecumenical Center of Evangelization, Formation and Consultancy CECA. It was created as a Roman-Catholic entity and has been growing to become ecumenical because of many, namely ecclesiastic reasons. In this essay, I shall analyze the contribution of CECA toward the proliferation of Liberation Theology in Brazil and its practices based on this theological reference, as well as the interrelatedness between the history of this organization with the development of Liberation Theology in Latin America. Simultaneously, a new ecumenical proposal was being elaborated by CECA which has given significant support to the Ecumenical Movement in Brazil. From the thirty years of its history, many things are to been remembered: persons, practices and a proposal of evangelization engaged with structural transformations of society, as historic mediations of the kingdom of God with Christian unity as its main principle toward a new oikoumene, according to Gods purpose, announced by biblical prophets and embodied in Jesus Christ.

Contribuições do Movimento dos Focolares ao ecumenismo

Beatriz Sarkis Simões 05 March 2010 (has links)
This research aims to give greater visibility to the specific contributions that the Focolare Movement, founded in 1943 by Chiara Lubich, has to offer to the ecumenical journey. The first part deals with the history of ecumenism: the concept, historical events that also led to ruptures in the Church of Christ, the genesis of the ecumenical movement and the relevance of ecumenism. Analyzing the importance of ecumenical dialogue, this research presents the proposal of the dialogue of life which has its roots in the spirituality of the Focolare Movement and is considered one of its specific contributions to ecumenism. The second part presents an ecumenical hermeneutics which has two principles: fraternity and cross. It is believed that it is not possible to reach full communion (koinonia), without going through the way of the cross, through the way of the abandonment of Jesus (kenosis). Then a reflection on the Focolare Movement and the ecclesiology of communion is made. The reflection leads to the central topic of this chapter: the proposal of the dialogue of life presented as an answer to the demands of the current ecumenical world. The third part presents a second specific contribution of the Focolare Movement to the ecumenical journey: the Project of the Economy of Communion in Freedom, which was launched in 1991 by Chiara Lubich during one of her trips to Brazil. This social Project, which is put into practiced ecumenically, is present in several countries around the world today and reflects the reality of communion which is the basis proposed by the spirituality of the Focolare Movement. So, it is possible to asseverate that the Focolare Movement has something significant to offer to the ecumenical journey, whether on a spiritual or a practical level.

Les mutations du protestantisme militant en Scandinavie. Du mouvement populaire au renforcement convictionnel : transformation structurelle et idéologique des organisations missionnaires et des antennes de jeunesse en Norvège et en Suède de 2000 à 2010 / The contemporary mutation of active Norwegian and Swedish Protestant movements : from popular mass movements to convictionnal reorientation : structural and ideological transformations in missionary organizations and youth antennae in Norway and Sweden (2000-2010)

Harry, Frédérique 22 November 2010 (has links)
The contemporary mutation of Norwegian and Swedish Protestant circles, a sector largely unknown to French research, may be analyzed through the recent structural and ideological adaptation of the following missionary organizations Normisjon, Norsk Luthersk Misjonssamband, Norsk Misjonsselskap, Indremisjonsforbundet and Norme, as well as of two youth antennae equmenia and Acta. They are led to espouse behavioral patterns bearing resemblance with the ones of a religious community: they restructure, highlight trans-confessional networks and reframe and recast their objectives in the light of their militancy and militant objectives. Retracing the trajectory of popular movements through the “awakenings” and present-day metamorphoses, the aim is here to analyze the underlying re-actualizations at stake in this contemporary transformation. Be it in the form of modern ecumenism, the globalization of missionary issues, the challenge of trans-generational transmission or the imperative of economic and material rationalization, these reasons often have in common to highlight the phenomenon from the point of view of its internal factors and impetuses. However, the socio-historical conditions and the transformations (status, structure, objectives) that we highlight have simultaneously to be understood in the context of broader transversal dynamics, thus highlighting the limits of a “targeted” approach and calling for an analysis of the aforementioned sector as a distinct field of research within the sociology of religions in Scandinavia.

Místo setkávání Travná mezi roky 1968 - 2004 / Place of Encounter Travná between 1968 and 2004

Rosický, Aleš January 2018 (has links)
This thesis describes place of encounter Travná from the time of its establishment to 2014. The main aim of this work is to describe what types of influences affected meetings of youth in Travná. The main sources used in this work are several interviews which were conducted with people who are connected to Travná in some way. Methods of oral history were used for the realization and processing of these interviews. Thanks to a wide variety of interviews across the investigated time period, we can find out a lot about the history of youth meetings. A large part of the thesis is devoted to pastor Adolf Petr, who was the founder of Travná and who influenced many other events connected with youth meetings. Other topics which arose from the interviews and which are important for the youth meetings are different types and displays of piety, work in Travná, ecumenical and foreign collaboration, time of Communism and social work in Travná. The author tries to put encounters in Travná before 1989 into the context of other young people church meetings in Czechoslovakia. Events from 1990s Travná are seen in the context of a newly formed legal and economic system.
