ADOLESCENTES EM EDITORIAIS DA REVISTA CAPRICHO: LINGUAGEM, CONTEXTO E REPRESENTAÇÃO / ADOLESCENTS IN EDITORIALS OF CAPRICHO MAGAZINE: LANGUAGE, CONTEXT AND REPRESENTATION

Olmos, Olívia Martins de Quadros 16 June 2011 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze how language is used to show representations on adolescence in editorials of Capricho magazine. To do so, we use pressupositions of Systemic-Functional Linguistics concerning interpersonal and ideational (experiential) metafunctions. The corpus is composed of 24 editorials published in Capricho from January to December, 2009. Having as basis aspects of the Mood and transitivity systems (HALLIDAY & MATTHIESSEN, 2004) and of Appraisal Theory (MARTIN & WHITE, 2005), the steps followed are: a) identification of the recurrent terms adolescent and adolescence as well as their referrers (pronouns, synonyms, ellipses); b) identification of speech functions and clause moods; c) quantification and analysis of the occurrence of appraisal in terms of attitude (affect, judgment and appreciation) and gradation (force and focus) in clauses with reference to adolescents; d) description and analysis of the components of transitivity in clauses that constitute the text in order to verify the lexico-grammatical roles developed by the adolescent girls. In relation to the interpersonal resources, the analysis showed the use of explicit commands and of interpersonal metaphors as interaction resources with the female readers. The most frequent appraisal categories in the corpus are judgment, denoting relationship evaluation (dating, family and friendship), leisure (vacations and parties) and study (school, courses and exchange study), characterizing contexts in which the adolescent girls are socially inserted. From the analysis of the resources of transitivity, we find that the adolescent is represented, in the texts analyzed, as a girl who dates who walks, who loves the holidays, going to shows and events that relate to family and friends.

The set of editorials previous to the event is destined to verify what would be the magazine position about the event, trying to comprove whether this media is exemplo how it is affirmed in communication means or it has an ideological position which means not be only informative. Otherwise, the analysis of editorials occurred after to the elections searches to verify another spread out speech which asserts that the press would be opportunist, lining up itself with the power to get benefits of these negotiations revenues. The reflection is conducted considering a hypothesis that any statement based in common sense is supported. Parallel, it is also searched to show as Veja (and communication means in general) constitutes for itself a positive autorepresentation to guarantee a sustentation for the speech that it produces. The utilized theoretical basement is constituted from the Discourse Analysis of the French line having as central authors of support Pêcheux (1995), Charaudeau and Maingueneau (2004), Orlandi (2001 a e b) and Maingueneau (2005). The concepts of this theory which were crucial for this work accomplishment are ethos, inter-discourse, discursive formation and ideology. The used methodology is related to the analytical-interpretative procedures and it operates with removed clippings of the mentioned editorials.

[en] BEYOND THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG: THE FUNCTION OF SUBORDINATION IN THE PROJECTION OF TRUTHS AND OPINIONS IN EDITORIAL DISCOURSE: A COGNITIVE APPROACH / [pt] ALÉM DA PONTA DO ICEBERG: O PAPEL DAS ORAÇÕES SUBORDINADAS SUBSTANTIVAS NA PROJEÇÃO DE VERDADES E OPINIÕES NO DISCURSO EDITORIAL: UMA PROPOSTA FUNCIONAL COGNITIVA

[en] Editorials published by major newspapers project more than facts. Rather, they have the power to transform and, many times, even to manipulate readers. Inspired by common knowledge of such nature, this research aims to investigate the psycho-pragmatic facts that could explain it academically. It adopts the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, mainly Fauconnier s (1994;1997) Mental Spaces Model, as well as Discourse Analysis (Brown and Yule, 1983). To accomplish its aims, it analyzed a corpus of 20 editorials published in major Brazilian newspapers in the light of principles such as blending, figure-ground, and perspectivization and focused on subordinate clauses. Results indicate that nominal subordinate clauses are highly frequent in the genre and that they constitute a space where beliefs blend with reality as if they were one and the same. Although they function as ground syntactically, perceptually they are figure. Therefore, the research succeeded in demonstrating academically some possible psycho-pragmatic roots for the power of editorials. Programs that educate prospective journalists may benefit from its results.

Au cœur des magazines ˸ de collaborations en négociations, le système des images de mode américaines (années 1960-années 1980) / The Collaborative and Negociated System of Fashion Editorials in American Magazines, 1960s-1980s

Morin, Alice 16 November 2018 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examines fashion editorials through a case study of three American magazines in context, from the 1960s to the 1980s: Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, two mainstream publications, and a new magazine then, Interview. It is postulated that the photographic editorial production of those magazines is central to them – as material objects, and as the core of their activity as well, both aspects enabling and unfolding their positions, their codes and their purposes. By looking at major editorial series, I explore how these images stand out as "contact zones" between a highly collaborative production process and their receptions, and how their function is also one of negotiation with regards to its context.A close analysis of the conditions of production, the content and the circulations of these images demonstrates that magazines express undeniable conservatism through the perpetuation of a mainstream norm. However, as this norm constantly changes on the surface, I argue that conditions regularly emerge for it to be negotiated. An attentive study of the tensions and compromises unfolding in the « uncertain moments » that characterize the period running from the 1960s through the 1980s demonstrates the existence of a powerful system. Structured around a coherent and hermetic narrative, it proves indeed hard to challenge. Yet, as this thesis argues, the ensemble of editorial fashion images homogenized by these long-term processes is in fact varied and diverse. If these images construct models, they also offer counter-models, counter-narratives and counter-points. All these possibilities converge into a strict but agile framework, firmly oriented by its producers but adaptable, even though its subversive potential is only realized at the margins. This system—structured around a powerful format—is highly restrictive yet it still performs a constant balancing act between conflicting tensions and goals, fueled by and unfolded in the fashion images at its core.

Interpretació periodística del conflicte basc (Avui, El Periódico i La Vanguardia. Setembre 1998 - abril 2000)

Xicoy Comas, Enric 25 November 2008 (has links)
West German editorial journalists between division and reunification, 1987-1991

Dodd, Andrew January 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the published commentary of editorial journalists regarding the division of Germany in twelve major newspapers of the Federal Republic of Germany in a period spanning from the final years of division to the immediate aftermath of the unification of the two German states. The study tracks editorial advocacy in response to East German leader Erich Honecker's Bonn visit in 1987 coupled with the intra-German policy efforts of the Social Democratic Party in opposition, which seemed to edge towards two-state neutralism; the wave of repression in the German Democratic Republic from late 1987 onward in the wake of Mikhail Gorbachev's reform programme, and the June 1989 visit of Mikhail Gorbachev to Bonn. Journalistic commentators' propagation of a form of constitutional patriotism as a Federal Republican identity will be examined. Responses to the East German Revolution as it developed in late 1989 are analyzed in detail, followed by an account of journalistic efforts to define the political-cultural parameters of united Germany between March 1990 and June 1991. After four decades, the post-war division of Germany had acquired a degree of normalcy. Journalistic commentators argued against any acceptance of division that also accepted the existence of the party-state dictatorship in the German Democratic Republic, insisting that the German Question was 'open' until self-determination for East Germans was realized. Nevertheless, throughout the period journalistic commentators argued in unison against solutions to division which would alienate the Federal Republic from its western alliance or put its established socio-political order at risk. Contemporary journalism propagated an image of the Federal Republic that was thoroughly defined by its post-war internalization of 'Western' value norms. This was most evident during the East German Revolution and the immediate aftermath, ostensibly the moment of greatest uncertainty about Germany's future path, when commentators became champions of continuity within the western alliance.

Intercultural rhetoric of English newspaper editorials: An analysis of the Daily Graphic and the New York Times

Wornyo, Albert Agbesi 21 September 2018 (has links)
PhD (English) / Department of English / This study sought to analyse the discourse strategies in the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper as texts constructed in an African English as a Second Language (ESL) setting and the editorials of the New York Times of America as texts constructed in an Anglo-American English environment. The objective of the study was to discover the differences and the similarities that exist between the discourse strategies of the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper and the editorials of the New York Times. This objective is achieved by analysing five features of text. First, the rhetorical structure of the two editorials were analysed to find out the rhetorical strategies used in composing the editorials. Second, the micro-genre variation between the two editorials was examined. In addition, the thematic development of the two editorials was carried out. Also, the study investigated the rhetorical appeals preferred by the editorials from the two different socio-cultural settings. Finally, as newspaper editorials, the use of attribution was studied to find out how the editorials disclose the sources of their information to make it clear to their readers where they get their information from. The findings of the study revealed some differences and some similarities in the discourse strategies employed by the two editorials. The Daily Graphic as a newspaper published in an ESL setting in Africa exhibited the unique use of some discourse features that reflect the socio-cultural setting different from that of the New York Times as a newspaper published in the socio-cultural environment of Anglo-American English. / NRF
