This thesis examines the influence of marketing communication on music industry with focus on electronic dance music. In theoretical part are processed basic terms defining marketing communication. Consequently is described development of electronic dance music from seventies. The main objective of this thesis is define important marketing tools in allotted age group and confirm knowledge of this area of music industry. The practical part is focused on the research of popularity, target group determination and also evaluates interview with specialists and artists. Base on the research results from questionnaires and interview the thesis also proposes own marketing campaign of unknown artist.

The aim of this work is to map the current development on the Prague cultural scene set in the industrial spaces, it captures in a comprehensive way some common tendencies in the atypical industrial environment. Although there are marginally mentioned various cultural activities, work particularly focuses on the frequent presentation of electronic dance music in abandoned buildings. The work describes the historical development of industrial heritage on the territory of Prague, what kind of cultural businesses in this environment are currently taking part, how do they differ and what do they depend on. After reading this thesis the reader gains insight into the trends currently prevailing on the Prague music scene out of the traditional club environment.

Bass Is My Religion: Syncretic Spirituality and Navigating the Potential for Misappropriation Among Participants in Electronic Dance Music Culture

At electronic dance music events in the United States, artists and attendees tend to appropriate religious and spiritual sounds, images, and dress, especially from India but also from elsewhere, to varying degrees. This project explicates the effects of adopting religious symbology, ethos, and atmosphere in the music and culture of EDM, specifically in bass music culture. It argues that although individual participants may adopt aspects of religious traditions in ways they perceive as authentic, the potential for misappropriation still exists. In other words, EDM culture creates opportunities for misappropriation that individual participants navigate in order to construct their own individual forms of spirituality in relation to the live music experience and EDM culture at large. Utilizing a set of seven interviews with individuals who have close ties to the EDM community, this project explores the ways that attendees navigate conversations about cultural appropriation, specifically in the bass music community. A set of common attitudes, opinions, and beliefs forges a syncretic spirituality among these seven interviewees, which inform how these individuals navigate conversations about appropriation in the EDM community. In addition to these seven interviews, three case studies that focus on specific artists who spearhead specific subscenes frame this project: the psychedelic downtempo duo Desert Dwellers, the multiethnic trap artist TroyBoi, and the cult dubstep DJ Bassnectar. Synthesizing ideas by these seven interviews with previous EDM scholarship and specific cases within these communities, I conclude that as artists and attendees negotiate meanings with one another, they must ultimately choose to justify their appropriation, often by claiming a syncretic sense of spirituality, or to avoid association with it entirely.

This diploma thesis is focused on the topic of electronic dance music and its genre classification within Czech music scene. The main part of the thesis defines seven primary genres of EDM from the historical and musical perspective, and consequently it divides them into the subgenres that the audience can meet on the Czech dance floors most frequently. Moreover, the thesis describes the origin, evolution as well as the current situation of Czech EDM. The thesis also concerns with the differences among the subgenres by means of the drum pattern notation and sonic samples.

Actualmente, el género Pop, Rock y Latín utilizan el EDM como género complementario y esto se ha visualizado en la publicidad. Desde los inicios de la publicidad, la música ha estado presente como un complemento de mensajes publicitarios con el fin de generar conexión con los consumidores. En esta investigación cualitativa nace con el objetivo de conocer como el EDM (Electronic Dance Music), mediante campañas publicitarias, genera determinadas motivaciones hacia un servicio. Con el objetivo general, nacieron cuatro objetivos específicos: Identificar el uso de música en las campañas publicitarias, identificar la percepción del EDM en las campañas publicitarias, analizar las motivaciones generadas con el EDM y su relación con las marcas de servicio; y diagnosticar al EDM como herramienta publicitaria. Se entrevistaron a 8 expertos de la publicidad para dialogar en base a su experiencia, conocimientos y dialogar de los casos de investigación: Plaza Vea-Campeonas todos los días y Saga Falabella-Colección #MossimoUnlimited. / EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music, it is the mother genre of modern electronic music. Currently, the Pop, Rock and Latin genre use EDM as a complementary genre and this has been seen in advertising. From the beginning advertising, music has been present as a complement to advertising messages to generate connection with consumers. In this qualitative research, it was born with the aim of knowing how EDM (Electronic Dance Music), through advertising campaigns, generates certain motivations towards a service. This Masters thesis is an attempt to analyse the significance of rhythm in electronic dance music. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether rhythm can create meaning within electronic dance music, and to analyse its effect on the structure of the genre. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part we will define the theories of music semiotics with regard to the structuralist approach and the traditional approach of CH. S. Peirce. We will describe the ways rhythm can operate and define what the term electronic dance music means. In the second part we will analyze rhythmic structures of individual sub-genres by comparing and contrasting basic elements of the rhythmic pattern.

“WELL, DON’T WALK AROUND NAKED... UNLESS YOU’RE A GIRL”: GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND RISK IN JAMTRONICA FESTIVAL SUBCULTURAL SCENES

The purpose of this study was to explore emerging issues surrounding gendered fear, threat, and violence perpetration at music festivals – particularly events that feature a synthesis of jam band and electronic dance music acts – a genre termed jamtronica by its fans. Though gendered violence perpetration and prevention have been widely studied within other party-oriented settings (i.e., sexual violence perpetration on college campuses), very little research exists to address how wider disparities of gender and sexuality permeate a community whose members frequently claim the scene’s immunity from external inequalities. In this three-year multi-sited ethnography, I incorporate participant observations, group and individual interviews, and textual analyses to progressively layer investigations into: 1) festival-goers’ gender-bifurcated perceptions of the problems they face within the event arena; 2) how institutional and interactional inequalities fuel gender-sexual expectations that exacerbate the risks with which festival-going women’s contend; and, 3) how jamtronica’s “libertarian and libertine” codes complicate women’s negotiations of (sub)cultural agency, expression, and safety. Findings derived across fourteen sites, interviews with 179 festival participants, and countless material texts suggest that men and women do perceive festival “problems” in very different ways – subsequently leading women to calculatedly navigate festival terrains, interactions, and self-presentations in ways that festival-going men seldom must. Protected by scene norms that paradoxically elevate personal autonomy and group integration, festival-going men’s homosocial displays of masculinity (through pranks, drinking and drug use, and even sexual predation) often goes unchallenged – or, is seemingly even encouraged. In an environment that both scholars and study participants claim to eclipse mainstream inequalities of gender and sexuality, a closer look reveals the multiplex ways that festival-going women risk their physical, social, and sexual well-beings in order to pursue the emancipatory promises that jamtronica music festival community discourses purport. For this understudied, yet rapidly growing, subcultural scene, this study offers conceptual and analytical foundations to event-specific violence prevention programming, as well as gender and sexuality-centric initiatives paramount to ever-diversifying jamtronica music festival communities.

Coping with Acculturative Stress: MDMA Usage among Asian American Young Adults in the Electronic Dance Music Scene

The intersection of Asian American identity and illicit substance use is greatly understudied in psychological literature, especially with matters of mental health and drug use being stigmatized by Asian cultural norms. However, with an increasingly alarming number of fatal drug overdoses by Asian Americans at electronic dance music (EDM) events, attention must be drawn to the needs of this unique population. The present study characterizes this community by drawing from data of 1,290 Asian American young adults who participate in the EDM scene. This study also hypothesizes the impact of acculturative stress and feelings of social belonging on MDMA usage patterns. Analysis reveals a population of largely East and Southeast Asian, 2nd generation, college-educated young adults with strikingly high usage rates of MDMA, an illicit drug linked to the EDM scene. Multiple regression models were created that could predict MDMA use through various measures related to acculturative stress and social belonging. Findings revealed the significant impact of acculturation, acculturative stress, mental health, peer relationships, and desires for social belonging on this population’s MDMA usage patterns, providing an important platform from which future research may launch much-needed additional studies of Asian American young adults and illicit drug use.

Počátky pražské klubové scény / The beginnings of clubbing in Prague

This piece of work was meant to be countinuous to my bachelor's thesis. In that essay I was dealing with the history of Czech electronic dance music in general. This time I focused just on Prague and surrounding area. The Czech capital was deeply influenced by presence of tourists. After the Velvet revolution, they were suddenly able to visit Prague. And as they they were already familiar with electronic music, they could help to spread it here. The situation in Prague is also compared with the rest of the world (western civilization). In the first part of the essay, I describe the qualitative research and the method I have used, which is the oral history. I also enclose a brief vocabulary of frequently used terms that are not very well known to the greater audience, I suppose. The last part is the analysis of the interviews itself. The interviews were done with important narrators.

In der Arbeit wird das Zusammentreffen der aus dem Club kommenden Electronic Dance Music (EDM) mit dem massenmedial konsolidierten Musikvideo untersucht. Diskutiert wird die These eines ästhetischen Paradigmenwechsels, der sich dadurch im Musikvideo vollzieht. Dieser beruht vor allem auf der musikalischen Figur des instrumentalen, modularen Tracks, die sich signifikant von der des Songs unterscheidet. Der originäre Zweck des Musikvideos, den Auftritt des Interpreten auf dem Monitor zu visualisieren, steht also mit dem Track zur Disposition oder wird gar obsolet; das erfordert neue Strategien der Bebilderung. Teil I und II der Arbeit verorten Musikvideo und EDM im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs und versammeln die jeweiligen ästhetischen Attribute. In Teil III wird anhand der Club Visuals die Beziehung von Tracks und Bildern erörtert, um darüber die veränderte Klang-Bild-Konstellation im Musikvideo durch EDM herzuleiten. In Teil IV werden die Erkenntnisse anhand der Fallstudie, dem Musikvideo „Windowlicker“ von Aphex Twin (Musik) und Chris Cunningham (Regie) aus dem Jahr 1999 ausgewertet und angewendet. Die Arbeit möchte die Dimension der ästhetischen Studien um das Musikvideo erweitern und verdeutlichen, wie sich das Musikvideo auch unter veränderten klanglichen Bedingungen als unentbehrlicher Bestandteil der Aufführung von Popmusik in der Monitorkultur erweist und als künstlerisches Genre unbedingt ernst zu nehmen ist, da sich in ihm zeitgenössische Avantgarden abbilden können. / This thesis explores the relationship between Electronic Dance Music (EDM) which originated in clubs, and the mass media consolidated music video. Focussing on how EDM influences the music video, an aesthetic paradigm shift on the latter is discussed. This change stemmed mainly from the structure of the instrumental, modular EDM track, which is significantly different from the structure of the song. Originally, the music video was intended as way of visualising the performance of the artist on the monitor; however, the advent of instrumental EDM tracks posed critical problems for this approach, and arguably renders it obsolete. New strategies of illustrations are required. Parts I and II of this thesis analyse music video and EDM through scientific discourses in an attempt to define their respective aesthetic attributes. In part III the relationship between tracks and images in club visuals is discussed in order to illustrate the singularity of this dialogue. In part IV, conclusions from the foregoing sections are evaluated and applied to a study of “Windowlicker” by British artist Aphex Twin, the video to which was directed by Chris Cunningham in 1999. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the aesthetic studies of the music video to clarify its status as an essential part of popular music in monitor culture. As an artistic genre it has to be taken seriously because it can display contemporary avant-gardes.
