Performance evaluation for industrial wastewater treatments plants.

Lilian Heeren Raschle 12 April 2013 (has links)
The industrial production process can generate large amounts of wastewater. These effluents, when untreated, can pollute soil and water, causing great environmental impact. In this sense it is essential that all industries that generate wastewater own a treatment plant. In order to keep the treatment plant permanently functioning according to its purpose, it should be routinely evaluated. Therefore the performance evaluation for Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants (IWTP) becomes an important tool for maintaining its efficiency, and justifies itself by seeking vulnerable points on the treatment plant and providing subsidies needed to produce diagnosis and projects to adequate the systems, allowing treated effluent to remain in compliance with the requirements established by the environmental legislation. In this work, a methodological proposal was designed, formed by a road map composed of levels of questioning, which assists the evaluator in the performance analysis of IWTP. In complement to this road map some checklists were developed to help guide the evaluator in his analyzes. While preparing these lists, manuals developed in several countries were considered. The checklists include questions to assess the general data of the industry, its Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and some systems and operations of the treatment plant. To illustrate one of the road map questioning levels a case study was included, in which the influent and effluent of a mining industry are evaluated by multivariate statistical technique called Principal Component Analysis (PCA), to demonstrate the performance of the IWTP. The result of the assessment showed a good performance by the IWTP while treating wastewater. It is expected, therefore, that this study is useful for evaluating the performance in plants where industrial effluents are treated.

Impact of Engine Dynamics on Optimal Energy Management Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hägglund, Andreas, Källgren, Moa January 2018 (has links)
In recent years, rules and regulations regarding fuel consumption of vehicles and the amount of emissions produced by them are becoming stricter. This has led the automotive industry to develop more advanced solutions to propel vehicles to meet the legal requirements. The Hybrid Electric Vehicle is one of the solutions that is becoming more popular in the automotive industry. It consists of an electrical driveline combined with a conventional powertrain, propelled by either a diesel or petrol engine. Two power sources create the possibility to choose when and how to use the power sources to propel the vehicle. The strategy that decides how this is done is referred to as an energy management strategy. Today most energy management strategies only try to reduce fuel consumption using models that describe the steady state behaviour of the engine. In other words, no reduction of emissions is achieved and all transient behaviour is considered negligible.  In this thesis, an energy management strategy incorporating engine dynamics to reduce fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions have been designed. First, the models that describe how fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions behave during transient engine operation are developed. Then, an energy management strategy is developed consisting of a model predictive controller that combines the equivalent consumption minimization strategy and convex optimization. Results indicate that by considering engine dynamics in the energy management strategy, both fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions can be reduced. Furthermore, it is also shown that the major reduction in fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions is achieved for short prediction horizons.

Efficient Route-based Optimal Energy Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Berntsson, Simon, Andreasson, Mattias January 2018 (has links)
The requirements on fuel consumption and emissions for passenger cars are getting stricter every year. This has forced the vehicle industry to look for ways to improve the performance of the driveline. With the increasing focus on electrification, a common method is to combine an electrical driveline with a conventional driveline that uses a petrol or diesel engine, thus creating a hybrid electric vehicle. To fully be able to utilise the potential of the driveline in such a vehicle, an efficient energy management strategy is needed. This thesis describes the development of an efficient route-based energy management strategy. Three different optimisation strategies are combined, deterministic dynamic programming, equivalent consumption minimisation strategy and convex optimisation, together with segmentation of the input data. The developed strategy shows a decrease in computational time with up to more than one hundred times compared to a benchmark algorithm. When implemented in Volvo's simulation tool, VSim, substantial fuel savings of up to ten percent is shown compared to a charge-depleting charge-sustain strategy.

Värderingsprocesser för bedöming av siginfikanta aspekter i företagsledning för hållbar utveckling / Valuation processes for assessment of significant aspects in corporate sustainability management

Schelin, Jannica January 2002 (has links)
The use of environmental management systems, and objectives-led corporate management have become a widespread phenomenon today. Identification and assessment of an organisation’s significant (environmental) aspects is crucial within this work. Identification and especially assessment of significant aspects is often considered as a problematic step in many organisations. There are no generally accepted methods how to undertake this crucial step. Corporate management towards sustainable development needs to concern all members of the organisation to be successful. This study presents a management information system (MIS) for this purpose. The specific purpose is to develop a method for assessment of significant aspects that account for different viewpoints and values within the organisation. Methods used for this assessment has been tested through different procedures. The result of this study shows that a crossfunctional group should use the MIS, when the variables in the MIS are not merged together, and the result presented not aggregated. The tool could be used for both strategic and operative decisions. The MIS contributes with a new way of thinking, and opens a way for a holistic view within the company. The MIS may help to remove some of people’s selective perceptions and increase the problemsolving capacities within the company.

Route Based Optimal Control Strategy for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Almgren, Johan, Elingsbo, Gustav January 2017 (has links)
More restrictive emission legislations, rising fuel prices and the realisation that oil is a limited resource have lead to the emergence of the hybrid electric vehicles. To fully utilise the potential of the hybrid electric vehicles, energy management strategies are needed. The main objective of the strategy is to ensure that the limited electric energy is utilised in an efficient manner. This thesis develops and evaluates an optimisation based energy management strategy for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The optimisation methods used are based on a dynamic programming and ECMS approach. The strategy is validated against Vsim, Volvo Cars' performance and fuel consumption analysis tool as well as against strategies where parts of the optimisation is replaced by logic. The results show that the developed strategy consumes less fuel both compared to the corresponding Vsim strategy and the logic strategies.

A study on EMS Company transformational strategies under industry 4.0 trend

Chao, Yuni Unknown Date (has links)
The timing of conducting this study is that EMS providers in Taiwan encounter the slow growth of market demand as well as China’s taking over the leading role of the world factory gradually. Moreover, the conventionally vertical Taiwan-China collaboration turns out horizontal competition increasingly. Over decades, thanks to competitive advantages of relatively low labor cost, raw material cost and land acquired cost, Taiwan PC manufacturing providers dominated in the market. However, the previously-mentioned advantages are approximately disappearing. The objectives of this study are to discuss the potential impact of macro-environment change to electronic manufacturers and their counter actions to the impact. Hopefully, these players can not only cask off conventional manufacturing stereotype but also search optimal transformational strategies through core resource approach to embrace the waves of Industry 4.0. By demonstrating some cases, the suggestions of transformational strategy for Taiwan EMS providers are as follows: firstly, the introduction of manufacturing automation and then the improvement of manufacturing efficiency and cost reduction; secondly, turning past-manufacturing-centered toward human-centered technologies and services, dedicated to developing critical technologies; lastly, initiating meeting market-needed strategies, shifting technology-driven research and development to customer-driven innovation and creating values of the industry.
