Arrive, Create: a Dance Research Project Focused on Collaboration and Generosity

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This document serves as a discussion of and reflection on the collaborative process of rehearsing and performing arrive, create: a Dance made by Many. My intention for the work was to deconstruct the traditional performance paradigm, focusing on constructing a generous performance atmosphere. During the rehearsal process the cast collectively worked to develop an ensemble dynamic for improvisational dance making. The construct of the performance encouraged the audience to engage with the work, both physically and imaginatively through sensory interaction with objects as well as verbal conversation. This document: recalls my background in dance improvisation; explores the relationship of philosophical and dance-making practices; discusses the process of making and performing the work; discusses research data collected from participants; and reflects on the project as a whole. Topics explored include: phenomenological perspectives, ethics of care, "moving identity", dancers' sense of authorship, transparency of dance work, collaboration, dance filmmaking, and dance improvisation in performance. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.F.A. Exploring the potential of relational approaches to mental capacity law

Clough, Beverley January 2015 (has links)
The Mental Capacity Act 2005, and the domestic law surrounding it, is currently in a state of instability, having undergone rigorous scrutiny by the House of Lords Select Committee. At an international level, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006 has cast substantial doubt over the very basis of this legal framework. The recommendations made by the Select Committee, and any resulting action by the government to address these, will be hoped to have an impact on the implementation of the legislation on those falling within its remit. On a deeper level, however, this thesis seeks to critically engage with the theoretical underpinnings which inform and guide this legislative framework. This entails a questioning of the ways in which those with disabilities and their carers are responded to under the statute. Exploring the theoretical debates in this context leads to a conclusion that the Act promulgates an individualistic approach to the concept of mental capacity, and does not adequately reflect the reality and lived experiences of those deemed to lack capacity or their informal carers. The papers in this thesis interrogate these issues through a focus on three distinct areas- carers interests under the best interests test; the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards though a social model lens; and capacity to consent to sex. In doing so, this thesis suggests that more relationally and contextually focused approaches can inform a legal framework which is attentive and responsive to the interwoven interests of those with cognitive impairments and their carers, and which facilitates the enjoyment of rights through a focus on the societal, structural and institutional barriers which have historically worked to exclude these individuals.

Economization of Home Care in Ontario: A Critical Ethnography of Nursing Actions

Al Chami, Mohamad Hamze 15 September 2021 (has links)
Many nursing theorists consider caring the essence of nursing practice. Yet, the meaning of caring is still elusive in nursing theories. This confusion in conceptualizing caring is exacerbated by the neoliberal socio-political and economic transformations of our societies that infuse nursing practice with economic efficiency values ‒ a condition that threatens the ethical dimensions of nursing. This critical study analyzes nursing actions in home care in Ontario and empirically reconstructs the normative dimensions of care based on nurses’ own perceptions of good care. The findings are used to critique current healthcare transformations through a critical theory of nursing actions. This study is situated in the tradition of the Frankfurt critical school and pursues an emancipatory interest. Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition is the principal theoretical foundation complemented by Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action and the interests of knowledge, in addition to the concepts of phenomenology and corporality. It uses critical ethnography as a methodological approach. Data collection included audiotaped semi-structured open-ended interviews with 18 nurses working for two different home care providers in Ottawa. Analysis demonstrates that the patient must be recognized on three dimensions: love, legal rights, and solidarity. Care is a specific form of communicative action in which patients should participate equally in decision making. Nursing actions comprise a hermeneutic-phenomenological dimension of “deep knowing” that respect the corporal and personal needs of the patient. Healthcare transformations and economic efficiency measures reinforce technical and standardized forms of care, which lead to pathologic practices that neglect patients’ corporal needs, thereby reifying patients. Nursing actions combine both technical and corporal aspects that characterize their “double logic.” This study provides elements for a critical theory of nursing actions. Findings highlight that nurses have a vision of how nursing care should look like, but the reality of home care makes it rather impossible to realize this vision. Economization leads to a systematic violation of multiple dimensions of recognition and to reification. Nurses must resist these social pathologies and this study provides some theoretical tools to engage in this struggle.

Creating a Caring Union : Examining the possibilities, and advantages, of replacing the ethics of justice with the ethics of care as the moral framework of the European Union

Engsjö-Lindgren, My January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to examine if the ethics of care could replace the ethics of justice, and what the advantages of replacing it would be. To determine if the replacement could be successful, the European Union (EU) goals was used as a measurement. The EU could, by replacing the ethics of justice with ethics of care, successfully reach its goals. By redefining the values and adjust the approach towards the goals according to the ethics of justice, the EU goals could be achieved.  To examine the issue a qualitative approach was chosen and, due to theoretical reasons, a postpositivist and normative method were applied. Firstly, the redefinition of the values presented, and secondly the approach towards the goals. Based on the empirical findings the advantages were discussed. The results shows that the EU could achieve its goals with the ethics of care as a moral framework, and that the EU should consider the ethics of care. A caring ethics would allow them to prioritize the well-being of inhabitants rather than the growth and competitiveness of the market. Moreover, basing the work on caring qualities instead of on universal values would make the European identity less exclusive and invite people of all population groups into the community. A feminist ethics allows the Union to care, not only about working life, but for people in all spheres, making people trust the EU when they are vulnerable.

Complicated Moralities: Relational Ethics and Caregiver Burden

Wolfeld, Brandon, 0000-0001-8567-7341 January 2022 (has links)
Health challenges changed over the course of the twentieth century to produce a population with growing care needs. As healthcare systems attempt to minimize the cost of this care, they have incentivized families to become informal caregivers for their loved ones. However this change has led to strain on caregivers. Caregiver burden has far ranging consequences on the health and wellness of the caregiver. In this paper I explore how the application of traditional medical ethics is insufficient to address these challenging dynamics, and that a relational ethics lens may elucidate more sustainable care practices. / Urban Bioethics

Teachers' Lived Experiences of the Virtual Learning Environment: A Phenomenological Inquiry

Johansson, Megan January 2021 (has links)
This research project is about the lived experiences of upper secondary school and adult education teachers from a remote region of Sweden, during the global pandemic of 2020 – 2021. Educational change can be understood in terms of experiences, through listening to teachers’ voices, which have the capacity to bring new knowledge for future usage of digital platforms in education. Teaching is an embodied experience and opportunities for movement have become limited in the virtual learning environment. A radical change in the methods of communication has also occured, in particular the verbal and non-verbal clues of oral interaction, which differ in physical and virtual classrooms. Interpersonal relationships have been shown to be of the utmost importance for successful learning, and these need to be formed and maintained both online and offline. Some students are at risk of falling behind academically and socially due to remote learning. The research has shed light on this situation and illustrates how governments should work effectively with teachers to ensure that all students can succeed, regardless of individual setbacks experienced during the global pandemic. This is an ethical responsibility of importance to ensure that no student will be disadvantaged as a result of remote learning.
