Designing for dream spaces : exploring digitally enhanced space for children's engagement with museum objects

Warpas, Katarzyna Bogusława January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents an investigation into the potential of digitally enhanced exhibition spaces to foster the engagement of children within family groups with museum objects on display, i.e. where physical contact is prohibited. The main focus is on the influence of digital enhancement on visitors’ engagement with artefacts and not on the digital elements themselves. This study has taken the mixed methods approach. It combines ethnographicallyinformed field studies with a design intervention within an overarching methodology of action research. In the review of literature, research from multiple fields including museum studies, interaction design and play research was brought together and examined from the perspective of exhibition design. This led to the development of the Social Dream Spaces Model. This model, which describes how visitors engage with museum objects, was used as the basis for a design intervention aimed at enhancing children’s engagement with exhibited artefacts. In-gallery participant observations were carried out in Bantock House Museum, Wolverhampton. Insights, based on data analysed from the perspective of the Social Dream Spaces Model, were used to develop a prototype of a digitally enhanced space, which was implemented into the existing exhibition. Data gathered in observations before and after the design intervention were compared in order to determine any changes in visitors’ responses to the exhibition. This study demonstrates the benefit of using the Social Dream Spaces Model for designing digitally enhanced exhibition spaces that promote children’s engagement with artefacts and social contact around them. The findings also confirm that designing subtle and nonintrusive digital enhancement can facilitate intergenerational interaction in exhibition spaces.

En ny forntid? : – förändringar i basutställningar om forntiden 1972-2005 / A new prehistory? : – Changes in permanent exhibitions about prehistoric times 1972-2005

Odengrund, Anna January 2006 (has links)
<p>The purpose with this thesis is to study how the arranging of archaeological objects in permanent exhibitions has changed over time. To find out about this I have been analysing three museums with prehistorical permanent exhibitions. The exhibition at Statens Historiska museum was produced in 2005, Nationalmuseum in Köpenhamn was produced in 1972 with additions from 1988 and 1995 and, finally, Malmö Museer exhibition which was produced in 1977. These exhibitions have been compared to analyse developments during the last 30 years. The result shows that there are different ideals within the exhibitions. Over time, these ideals have been focused more on the visitors and they have tried to appeal to the visitors through themes where the objects have been placed into a narrative. However there are many styles of exhibiting prevalent today that go back all the way to the beginning of the 20th century.</p> / <p>Uppsatsens syfte är att ta reda på hur sättet att ställa ut arkeologiska föremål i basutställningar har förändrats över tid.

Carleklev, Jan January 2008 (has links)
Sound is an interesting communication media that takes advantage of each persons individual ex- perience and conceptions and allows for many individual associations. Today museums can choo- se from a wide range of media (pictures, video, sound guides, computer and sound installations) to communicate with their audience because a greater variety of technical solutions is available. This paper has the goal to analys the possibilities of sound as a media of communication. The aim is to shed light on this relativly unexplored field that I think has a lot of potential. To narrow down my exploration, I have chosen to take a closer look at the exhibition Drömmens syster that is shown at the Världskulturmuseet in Gothenburg, Sweden. I have interviewed some key persons behind this exhibition to get an idea about the aim and I have interviewed a number of visitors to get a better understanding of how they experienced the exhibition. The exhibition Drömmens syster is about the more and more endangered people and their myths who live close by the Orinoco river in Venzuela. The conclusion from this essay shows that sound is a good media for communicating informa- tion. It is especially well suited to involve the audience in an experience of rain forest and the daily life around it. The museum suceeds several times to tell more by using sound than by just using pictures. Visitors can gain from the calming effect of the waterfall and they can get thrilled from the hiss of the snake. Therefor I sincerely hope that we are going to see more media con- cepts in the future that use auditive communication.

Wikström, Karolin January 2015 (has links)
This is a study about the balance between freedom and structure in the information design of an exhibition based on hands-on education. Work is focused on the exhibition The Human Body at Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje. The exhibition, which was built in 1997, was designed with the idea that signs create barriers and a reluctance to advertise about the "right way". The exhibition space has now been compressed and experiments have been grouped into two sections. In connection with this change, the signs in the exhibition come to be reviewed. This is because parents and other adult visitors expressed a desire for more information. The need for information is divided into labels for individual experiments and signage for the exhibition's theme. How this demand can be met without going against the pedagogy and aesthetics that Tom Tits believe is the central point of the work. The solution was based on the thesis that it is possible to gather information at one point to minimize the number of signs in the exhibition. Through methods as qualitative interviews, questionnaire survey and spatial analysis have an understanding of the complexity of the problem created. Which largely deals with the contrasts between the child's curiosity and the controlling adult world. The design solution that has been developed, resulting in three (instead of one) points where the focus has been on establishing the exhibition's theme and encourage interactivity. There has also been a quest for uniformity and flexibility, then the problem is not found to the current exhibition and information design throughout the house lacks a common thread. Whereupon consideration has been given to Tom Tits visual profile and the aesthetic that is seen as characteristic of the business. Studies circuits thus largely about Tom Tits, but it is hoped that the work interests a number of players, then a pursuit of general guidelines for the transmission of information have existed.

The Italian exhibition design, delineated from the influence of El Lissitisky and the production within the European vanguards, had in Brazil MASP as a space for its expression through mainly the performance of Lina Bo Bardi. From this context, the present research aims to highlight aspects of Italian exhibition design, influenced by the premises of modern Italian architecture and art. The exhibition Fashionable art: collection MASP Rhodia (2015-2016) presents 79 pieces of clothing that were donated by Rhodia to the MASP collection in the year 1972, and this exhibition, through the analysis of its exhibition devices, the object of this research. Here we made use of the bibliographical and documentary techniques, if the latter stopped the analysis of documents, texts, drawings and images related to the exhibition Fashionable art: MASP Rhodia collection, held at the MASP Documentation Center. The exhibition presents a different display from those that marked the Italian production in the field of exhibition design.

Silva, Gustavo Cossio da January 2011 (has links)
This study concerns educative exhibitions that aim to offer a reflection on design. Therefore the exhibition is conceived as a design type of project, which makes timely the theoretical foundations on exhibition design, an alternative in environmental-graphic design. The conceptual basis comprehends the exhibition as a product which is a variable in the visitors’ perception. The aim is to generate project criteria throughout the analysis in three studies regarding the actions of organizers and designers, considering the communication with the audience. The research is of exploratory kind, to which we lay hold of semi-structured interviews. The cases analyzed in three Brazilian cities during the years of 2010 and 2011 revealed that, besides its contribution to the diffusion of design, these events consist ways of reflecting about the challenges of design and the designer's role in contemporary society.
