O presente trabalho busca realizar uma análise do filme Câncer de Glauber Rocha em vista de estabelecer as implicações políticas e culturais da sua distensão temporal, internalizada como integrante da sua estrutura, entre os quatro dias de captação de suas imagens, em agosto de 1968, e os quatro anos que decorreram até a sua montagem e sincronização, sendo finalizado somente em maio de 1972. A nossa hipótese é a de que, ao incorporar o tempo de sua realização na forma, esta obra, por meio de duas inserções documentais coladas nos dois últimos estágios de sua realização, efetua uma intervenção política e cultural ao ano em que foi filmado. A partir da defesa da experimentação na arte, no contexto das vanguardas culturais e políticas de 1968, Glauber Rocha procura, via finalização, apresentar a sua experiência na forma de Câncer como experiência de uma época. / This project carries out an analysis of Glauber Rochas Cancer that aims to establish the political and cultural implication of the films temporal distention between the four days of shooting, in August 1968, and the four years over which it was edited and synchronized, until its completion in May 1972 and the way in which the film embeds this distention in its formal structure. We argue that the films formal incorporation of the period of its production, through the two documental segments inserted during the last two stages of production, effectively performs a political and cultural intervention on the events of the year it was shot. In the defense of experimentation in Art, in the context of the cultural and political avant-gardes of 1968, Glauber Rocha attempts, in postproduction, to present his experience, in the form of Cancer, as the experience of an epoch.

A tese investiga a recorrência do filme Um corpo que cai (Vertigo, 1958), de Alfred Hitchcock, como esquema matricial de uma reflexão meta-artística que, tomando como objeto a própria imagem (cinematográfica, pictórica, fotográfica, digital), atravessa toda a história moderna do cinema. Depois de definir e analisar a teoria artística proposta por Vertigo, a tese verifica os desdobramentos dessa teoria em uma série de filmes realizados desde o começo da década de 1960 até os anos 2000. Dentre os filmes analisados se acham La Jetée (Chris Marker, 1962), Blow up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966), Trágica obsessão (Obsession, Brian De Palma, 1975), Special Effects (Larry Cohen, 1984), Síndrome mortal (La Sindrome di Stendhal, Dario Argento, 1996), Estrada perdida (Lost Highway, David Lynch, 1997), A prisioneira (La captive, Chantal Akerman, 2000) e Na cidade de Sylvia (En la ciudad de Sylvia, José Luis Guerín, 2007). / The thesis investigates the recurrence of Alfred Hitchcock\'s Vertigo (1958) as the matrix scheme of a meta-artistic reflection that crosses all the modern history of cinema. It includes a series of films whose subject is the image itself (cinematographic, pictorial, photographic, as well as digital image). After defining and analyzing the artistic theory proposed by Vertigo, the thesis verifies the developments of this theory in many modern and contemporary films made since the beginning of the 1960\'s. Early Discourses on Colour and Cinema : Origins, Functions, MeaningsFrisvold Hanssen, Eirik January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation is a historical and theoretical study of a number of discourses examining colour and cinema during the period 1909 to 1935 (trade press, film reviews, publications on film technology, manuals, catalogues and theoretical texts from the era). In this study, colour in cinema is considered as producing a number of aesthetic and representational questions which are contextualised historically; problems and qualities specifically associated with colour film are examined in terms of an interrelationship between historical, technical, industrial, and stylistic factors, as well as specific contemporary conceptions of cinema. The first chapter examines notions concerning the technical, material, as well as perceptual, origins of colour in cinema, and questions concerning indexicality, iconicity, and colour reproduction, through focusing on the relationship between the photographic colour process Kinemacolor, as well as other similar processes, and the established non-photographic colour methods during the early 1910s, with an in-depth analysis of the Catalogue of Kinemacolor Film Subjects, published in 1912. The second chapter examines notions concerning the stylistic, formal and narrative functions of colour in cinema, featuring a survey of the recurring comparisons between colour and sound, found in the writing of film history, in discourses concerning early Technicolor sound films, film technology, experimental films and experiments on synaesthesia during the 1920s, as well as Eisenstein’s notions of the functions of colour in sound film montage. The third chapter examines the question of colour and meaning in cinema through considering the relationship between colours and objects in colour film images (polychrome and monochrome, photographic and non-photographic) during the time frame of this study.

Ayant réalisé neuf longs-métrages entre 1988 et 2007, aussi que plusieurs campagnes publicitaires, vidéo-clips, courts-métrages et projets collectifs, Wong Kar-wai est un des réalisateurs contemporains les plus importants actuellement. Issu de l'industrie cinématographique fortement commerciale de Hong Kong, Wong est parvenu à attirer l'attention du circuit international des festivals de cinéma avec son style visuel unique et son récit fragmenté. Considéré par plusieurs critiques comme le poète de la recherche d’identité de Hong Kong après 1997, Wong Kar-wai défie toutes les tentatives de catégorisation.
L’étude qui se poursuivit ici a donc pour objet essentiel de fournir une analyse attentive et complète de son oeuvre, tout en se concentrant sur les traits stylistiques qui donnent à ses films une unité. Ces caractéristiques correspondent à une certaine façon de raconter des histoires, de composer des personnages et des récits, de manipuler le temps et d'utiliser des ressources techniques de sorte que ses films offrent une identité cohérente. L'objectif est d'analyser les différents composants de ses images pour découvrir comment ses films communiquent les uns avec les autres afin de créer une identité unique.
Pour atteindre cet objectif, je pose comme hypothèse de travail que le cinéma de Wong est marqué par une structure dualiste qui permet à ses films de présenter des qualités contradictoires simultanément. La plupart de mes arguments se concentrent sur le travail du philosophe français Gilles Deleuze, qui a proposé une théorie du cinéma divisé entre l’image-mouvement et l’image-temps. Je considère que sa théorie fournit un cadre valide sur lequel les films de Wong peuvent être projetés. Tandis que ma recherche se concentre sur l’interprétation textuelle des films, je profiterais également d’une analyse comparative. / With nine feature films released between 1988 and 2007, as well as several advertising campaigns, music videos, short films and collective projects, Wong Kar-wai is one of the most important contemporary filmmakers currently working. Hailing from Hong Kong’s highly commercial film industry, Wong has managed to attract the attention of the international film festival circuit with his visual style and fragmented narrative. Considered by many critics as the poet of Hong Kong’s quest for identity post 1997, his cinema defies every attempt of standardization.
The main goal of this study is to provide an attentive and comprehensive study of his body of work, concentrating on the stylistics traits that make his films part of a coherent unity. These characteristics correspond to a certain way of telling stories, of composing situations and characters, of manipulating time and the use of technical resources so that his films offer a coherent identity. The objective is to analyze the different components of his images, to show how his films communicate with each other in order to create something unique.
To achieve this objective, I put forward the hypothesis that Wong’s cinema is marked by a dualistic structure that allows his films to present opposite qualities at the same time. Most of my arguments are based on the thoughts of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, whose own dualistic theory of cinema presented in his books Cinema 1: the movement-image and Cinema 2: the time-image, provides a valid framework upon which Wong’s films can be projected. While the research concentrates on the textual analysis of films, I will also benefit from comparative analysis and additional disciplines.

Tim Burton, un cinéma de la ré-imagination / Tim Burton, a cinéma of reimaginationCheron, Florence 05 December 2016 (has links)
Référentiel, réflexif, métaphorique constituent un échantillon des expressions et concepts employés pour qualifier les films de Tim Burton, attestant du lien qui unit ce corpus à l'histoire de son art et à son époque. Partant de ce constat, l'hypothèse proposée ici affirme que cette filmographie constitue un cinéma de la ré-imagination. Le cinéaste emploie lui même ce terme pour définir l'approche conceptuelle de son cinéma. Cette thèse explique d'abord le choix de ce mot par rapport aux concepts pré existants pour ensuite analyser ce qu'il englobe et implique dans la filmographie de Tim Burton. Ses films sont conçus comme des boîtes à jouets rassemblant souvenirs, imagination et pièces intactes. Ces éléments constituent la base formelle des ré imaginations burtoniennes. Ils s'entremêlent au sein d'une même image, tout au long d'un fil narratif parfois ténu. En adoptant des procédés cinématographiques et filmiques ramenant vers des âges antérieurs du septième art et rattachant les intrigues au domaine de l'imaginaire par l'intermédiaire de manifestations mentales, Tim Burton construit un cinéma ancré dans le passé, essayant de reconstituer le royaume de l'enfance en le reconstituant avec ce qu'il en reste. / Referential, reflexive, metaphorical – these are a few recurrent terms and concepts used to describe the films of Tim Burton, which attest to the links between this corpus and the history of his art and his era. Based on this observation, the present hypothesis argues that Burton’s filmography is a cinema of re imagination. The filmmaker himself uses this term to describe the conceptual approach to his films. This dissertation explains the choice of re imagination in regard to other pre existing concepts before analyzing the implications of re imagination in Tim Burton's filmography. His films are designed like toy chests in which memories, imagination, and intact pieces are collected. These elements establish the formal base of Tim Burton's re imaginings. They come together to form a single image by means an often tenuous narrative thread. By adopting cinematographic and filmic processes which look back to prior eras of the seventh art, and by bringing stories into the domain of the imagination through the intermediary of mental manifestations, Tim Burton builds a cinema that is anchored in the past, all while trying to restore the kingdom of childhood with what is left behind.

enunciation of Anderson’s film. By means of this theoretical approach, we become aware
that the enunciation of the film stimulates the spectator into realizing that the implied
meaning of the enunciation is one that can be understood within its own self. The “who”
and the “what” are no longer questions that are answered from the “outside”. The “who” is
the film and the “what” resides in it. What we are observing is the self–reflexive nature of

Orchids: Intersex and Identity in Documentary explores the creative practice challenges of working with bodies with intersex in the long-form auto/biographical documentary Orchids. Just as creative practice research challenges the dominant hegemony of quantitative and qualitative research, so does my creative work position itself as a nuanced piece, pushing the boundaries of traditional cultural studies theories, documentary film practice and creative practice method, through its distinctive distillation and celebration of a new form of discursive rupturing, the intersex voice.
