Almedahls have for some time started to receive more customer complaints about uneven roller blind fabrics or so-called waves over fabric. The waves are a major problem for Almedahls customers since they make it hard to cut the fabric into roller blinds. The company believes that the waves appear due to different process parameters within their finishing line but the company do not yet know how or where. The thesis project strives to find an explanation to what waves over fabric are, why they appear and how they can be reduced. The documentation that Almedahls have made of the problem so far, including photographs and customer complaints reports, was examined. Orders produced from four selected grey-weaves during the last three years was examined and compared to received customer complaints and standard operations lists. No clear relationship was found and weaves with longer process lines did not seem to cause more waves to appear. However, addition of an extra colouring to the standard operations appeared to be more frequently occurring when a standard operations list had been changed.Waves over fabric were at an early stage related to the mechanical properties of the weaves as the weaves are exposed to stresses and strains during the entire production line. In Almedahls’ finishing line the web and the beam tensions and the levelling mechanisms in the stenter frames appeared to be the parameters which especially apply stresses and strains. Tensile tests were performed to examine the mechanical properties of a few of Almedahls grey-weaves and half processed weave. The test results showed that a strain between 11-27 % can be applied before the test samples start to deform while calculations of the amount of strain applied by the stenter frames showed to be much less, between 2.5-3.5 %. The difference in size between the test samples and the weaves must be considered when comparing these results. The small, repeated strains applied by the finishing line may eventually lead to permanent deformation of the weaves and appear as waves. The combination of the web and the beam tensions can also result in a stretch in the bias-direction of the weave which cause deformation in the middle of the weave where waves most often appear.The thermal properties of the same weaves were also tested through DSC, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, tests. The test results showed that the polyester material in the weaves does not melt or deform at the temperatures Almedahls use in their processes. The shrinkage of the grey-weaves during the de-sizing processes was also considered through width measurements. The conclusion was that the structure of the grey-weave influences how much the weave will shrink and the dimension change of the weave may influence the appearance of waves and needs more investigation. / Program: Magisterutbildning i textilteknologi

Estudo dos parâmetros: teor de NaCl e acabamento superficial, na resistência à corrosão localizada e generalizada em tubos de cobre / Study of the parameters: NaCl concentration and surface finish on the pitting corrosion resistance of copper tubesAntonio Carlos Neto de Jesus 17 March 2008 (has links)
Tubos de cobre fabricados com o material ASTM C12200 (99,9%Cu-0,015-0,040%P) são utilizados mundialmente no transporte de água potável. A maior causa de vazamentos nestas tubulações é a corrosão por pite, que usualmente estão relacionadas com a qualidade da água. Estudos recentes mostraram que vazamentos em tubos de cobre usados para transporte de água de rede pública ocorreram em decorrência da corrosão por pite, o que se deu em virtude da presença do íon cloreto originado do tratamento para a desinfecção da água. Outro parâmetro que pode influenciar a corrosão por pite é a condição de acabamento interno dos tubos. Os óleos lubrificantes usados no processo de fabricação de tubos de cobre contêm carbono e este forma um filme deletério após o recozimento destes tubos. Este filme cria condições na superfície interna para a formação de pilhas de ação local. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar se o teor de cloreto de sódio no meio aquoso, e o acabamento superficial da superfície interna de tubos de cobre utilizados comercialmente para transporte de água (ABNT/NBR-13206), têm influência na resistência à corrosão destes tubos. A resistência à corrosão foi investigada por meio de ensaios eletroquímicos em soluções naturalmente aeradas com várias concentrações de cloreto de sódio, a 25 oC. A superfície interna dos tubos foi observada, antes e após os ensaios eletroquímicos, por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os tipos de acabamentos superficiais estudados foram: desengraxamento, jateamento e acabamento do processo final de fabricação (sem tratamento). Foi também construído um circuito fechado para estudar o efeito do acabamento superficial na resistência à corrosão sob condições mais próximas das encontradas na prática. O efeito do tratamento de recozimento do tubo em atmosfera inerte, que causa a recristalização da microestrutura e eliminação dos resíduos de óleo lubrificante, também foi avaliado. Os resultados indicaram que o mecanismo de corrosão em soluções com teores de cloreto entre 0,06 mol L-1 e 0,12 mol L-1 correspondeu ao de ataque localizado, enquanto que para a concentração de 0,6 mol L-1 prevaleceu o ataque generalizado. Os resultados do estudo do efeito do acabamento superficial indicaram que os tratamentos que reduzem o teor de carbono na superfície são benéficos à resistência à corrosão, mas este não é o único fator que afeta a resistência à corrosão. Outras características superficiais resultantes do tratamento da superfície também devem ser consideradas. Por exemplo, embora o jateamento cause a diminuição do teor de carbono na superfície dos tubos, o aumento de rugosidade produzido por este acabamento pode resultar em uma menor resistência à corrosão. Os tratamentos superficiais que produziram superfície com maiores resistências à corrosão foram aqueles que também produziram superfícies com menores teores de carbono, a saber, desengraxe e recozimento. / Copper tubes manufactured with C12200 ASTM (99.9% Cu-0015-0040% P) are used worldwide for potable water transport. The largest number of leakages in these tubes is due to pitting, usually related to the water quality, associated to the presence of chloride ions originated from water disinfecting treatment. The literature on the effect of chloride on the corrosion of copper pipelines is controversial. The finishing of the copper tubes inner might also influence pitting corrosion. The lubricating oils used in the manufacture of copper tubes contain carbon and a deleterious film might form during annealing. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of sodium chloride content and the inner surface finishing of copper tubes used for water transport (ABNT/NBR-13206) on their corrosion resistance. The study was carried out by electrochemical tests in naturally aerated sodium chloride solutions at various concentrations, at 25 °C. The tubes inner surface was observed previous to and after the electrochemical tests by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of the following surface finishing were investigated: degrease, sand blasting, annealing and the surface without treatment. A loop was built to simulate the operational conditions of the tubes. Results indicated that the corrosion mechanism in chloride solutions with concentrations between 0.06 mol L-1 and 0.12 mol L-1 was localized attack, whereas in the 0.6 mol L-1 solution, generalized attack was the predominant mechanism. The results the surface finishing investigation indicated that the treatments that leads to carbon content reduction are beneficial to corrosion resistance. However, other features must also be considered. For instance, although sand blasting reduces the carbon content on the tubes surface, the increase in roughness due to this treatment decreases the corrosion resistance. The surface treatments that resulted in increased corrosion resistance were those that also resulted in lower carbon levels at the surface, namely degreasing and annealing.

Foram conduzidos três experimentos no confinamento experimental do Departamento de Zootecnia da ESALQ/USP com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos de diferentes aditivos em rações para bovinos terminados em confinamento. No experimento 1 foram utilizados 100 bovinos machos Nelore castrados (392 kg), distribuídos em 20 baias, por 60 dias. As rações continham 41% de sorgo moído, 40% de polpa cítrica peletizada e 15% de silagem de cana-de-açúcar. Os tratamentos foram: (1) controle, (2) monesina sódica Rumensin (MON1), (3) monensina sódica Rumenfort (MON2), levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae Yea-Sacc 1026 (LEV1) e levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV2). A IMS foi reduzida pelo tratamento MON1 (P<0,05), quando comparada ao tratamento controle. O GPD dos animais não foi afetado pelos tratamentos (P>0,05). A EA dos animais não foi afetada pelos tratamentos (P>0,05). O tratamento MON2 apresentou um menor rendimento de carcaça (P<0,05) e o tratamento MON 1 apresentou uma maior AOL (P<0,05). No experimento 2 foram utilizados 96 tourinhos Nelore não castrados (396 kg), distribuídos em 16 baias por 95 dias. Os tratamentos foram: (1) Controle, (2) levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV), (3) combinação de levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae e bactérias probióticas na dose de 1g /bovino/dia (PROB1) e (4) combinação de levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae e bactérias probióticas na dose de 3g/bovino/dia (PROB2). As rações continham 59% de polpa cítrica peletizada, 35% de farelo de glúten de milho úmido e 5% de feno de tifton 65. A adição dos aditivos levedura (Saccharomyces cerevisae) e a combinação de leveduras e bactérias probióticas não afetou a IMS o GPD e a EA dos animais (P>0,05). A energia líquida de manutenção e de ganho das rações também não foi afetada pelos tratamentos (P>0,05), assim como os dados de carcaça. No experimento 3, que avaliou a digestibilidade das rações, foram utilizados 20 tourinhos Nelore, alocados em 20 baias individuais durante 15 dias, sendo 10 dias de adaptação ao marcador e 5 dias de coleta de fezes. A ração foi a mesma utilizada no experimento 2, e o marcador utilizado foi o óxido de cromo. Os tramentos utilizados foram: (1) Controle, (2) monensina sódica Rumenfort (MON), (3) levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV), (4) combinação de levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae e bactérias probióticas na dose de 1g /bovino/dia (PROB1) e (5) combinação de levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae e bactérias probióticas na dose de 3g/bovino/dia (PROB2). Os aditivos testados não afetaram as digestibilidades da MS, da MO, da FDN e da PB das rações (P>0,05). Com os resultados obtidos é possível afirmar que bovinos Nelore, castrados ou não, confinados com rações com altos teores de concentrado ricos em co-produtos como polpa cítrica e farelo de glúten de milho úmido não apresentam melhor desempenho nem melhor digestibilidade dos nutrientes quando suplementados com monensina sódica ou com micorganismos probióticos. / Three trials were conducted at the ESALQ/USP Animal Sciences Department experimental feedlot to evaluate the effects of different feed additives in feedlot finished cattle. On trial 1 100 Nellore steers (392kg) were allocated to 20 pens for 60 days. Experimental rations had 41% ground milo, 40% dried citrus pulp and 15% sugarcane silage. Treatments were: (1) control, (2) sodium monensin Rumensin (MON1), (3) sodium monensin Rumenfort (MON2), (4) yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae Yea-Sacc 1026 (LEV1) and (5) yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV2). DMI was reduced by MON1 trestment (P<0,05) in relation to control. WDG was not affected by treatments (P>0,05). Treatments did not affect FE (P>0,05). Animals on treatment MON2 showed the lowest dressing percentage (DP) and those on MON1 showed the highest rib eye area (REA) (P<0,05). Trial 2 used 96 young Nellore bulls (396kg), allocated to 16 pens for 95 days. Treatments were: (1) control, (2) Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV), (3) Saccharomyces cerevisiae and probiotic bacteria mix at 1g /animal/day dose (PROB1) and (4) Saccharomyces cerevisiae probiotic bacteria mix at 3g/animal/day dose (PROB2). Rations contained 59% dried citrus pulp, 35% wet corn gluten feed and 5% Tifton 65 hay. Treatments didnt affect DMI, WDG and FE (P>0,05). Rations net energy for maintenance and gain were also not affect by treatments (P>0,05), well as carcass data. Trial 3 utilized 20 young Nellore bulls allocated to individual pens for 15 days (10 days for adaptation to marker and 5 days for data collection) to evaluate rations digestibility. Experimental ration was the same utilized on trial 2, with chromium oxide as an external marker. Treatments were (1) control, (2) sodium monensin Rumenfort (MON1), (3) yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae Biosaf SC47 (LEV), (4) Saccharomyces cerevisiae and probiotic bacteria mix at 1g /animal/day dose (PROB1) and (5) Saccharomyces cerevisiae probiotic bacteria mix at 3g/animal/day dose (PROB2). Treatments did not affect rations DM, OM, NDF and CP digestibilities (P>0,05). Results show that Nellore cattle, castrated or not, feedlot finished receiving rations with high levels of byproducts such as dried citrus pulp and wet corn gluten feed dont have higher performance nor better nutrients digestibility when supplemented with sodium monensin or probiotic microorganisms.

Soldabilidade metalúrgica do aço ASTM A553 tipo I com 9% de níquel. / Metallurgical weldability of ASTM A553 Type I steel with 9% nickel.Soeiro Junior, Jaime Casanova 06 December 2017 (has links)
A soldagem altera as propriedades mecânicas dos aços ligados ao níquel, em especial seu desempenho em aplicações criogênicas. Assim, este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a soldabilidade metalúrgica do aço com 9% níquel e tem como objetivos: identificar se a fragilização em temperatura abaixo da temperatura Ac3 ocorre em ZACs com dois e três ciclos térmicos simulados fisicamente; analisar as características da junta soldada pelo processo de soldagem por atrito linear com mistura e os efeitos da soldagem multipasse; e analisar a influência dos passes de enchimento e acabamento sobre o comportamento mecânico da ZAC da raiz de uma junta soldada pelo processo de soldagem MIG/MAG. Destacam-se entre os resultados da simulação física da ZAC: as amostras que tiveram a temperatura máxima abaixo da temperatura Ac1, no terceiro ciclo térmico, não apresentaram o efeito de redução da energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V; a fração volumétrica de austenita retida não aumenta a quantidade de energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V para as amostras que tiveram a temperatura máxima do segundo ciclo térmico abaixo da temperatura Ac3 (723°C); e a correlação linear múltipla sugere um modelo empírico, baseado nos dados deste trabalho, onde os fatores de fração volumétrica do microconstituinte martensita-austenita, fração volumétrica de austenita retida e tamanho de grão são mais relevantes para a quantidade de energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V. Destacam-se entre os resultados da soldagem por atrito linear: a energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V da zona misturada do primeiro cordão (CP1) é menor que o metal de base; o segundo cordão gera duas regiões na zona misturada do primeiro cordão, que tendem a aumentar a energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V; os valores de energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V apresentam correlações lineares simples com a microdureza, a fração volumétrica do microconstituinte martensita-austenita e com o tamanho de grão. Destacam-se entre os resultados da soldagem com MIG/MAG: A soldagem do aço com 9% de níquel com a liga Inconel 625 gera uma zona não misturada entre o metal de solda e a ZAC; a amostra com todos os passes de solda (CP3) apresenta a menor energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V entre todos os experimentos; e a trinca, no ensaio Charpy V, propaga na zona não misturada no CP1 e no CP2, que tiveram as maiores energias absorvidas no ensaio Charpy. O CP3 apresenta propagação de trinca na linha de fusão e possui a menor energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy V. / Welding modify the mechanical properties of nickel steels, especially their performance in cryogenic applications. Thus, this work presents a study on the metallurgical weldability of 9% nickel steel and its objectives are: identify if the embrittlement in temperature below the Ac3 temperature occurs in HAZs with two and three thermal cycles simulated physically; analyze the characteristics of the joint welded by friction stir welding process and the effects of multipass welding; and analyze the influence of the filling and finishing passes on the mechanical behavior of HAZ from the root of a joint welded by the GMAW welding process. The results of the physical simulation of the HAZ were: the samples that had the maximum temperature below the temperature Ac1, in the third thermal cycle, did not present the effect of reduction of the energy absorbed in the Charpy V test; the retained austenite volumetric fraction does not increase the amount of energy absorbed in the Charpy V test for the samples having the maximum temperature of the second thermal cycle below the Ac3 temperature (723 °C); and the multiple linear correlation suggests an empirical model, based on the data of this work, where the volumetric fraction factors of the martensite-austenite microconstituent, retained austenite volumetric fraction and grain size are more relevant for the amount of energy absorbed in the Charpy V test. The FSW welding highlights results: the energy absorbed in the Charpy V test of the mixed zone of the first pass (CP1) is smaller than the base metal; the second pass generates two regions in the mixed zone of the first pass, which tend to increase the energy absorbed in the Charpy V test; the values of energy absorbed in the Charpy V test show simple linear correlations with the microhardness, the volumetric fraction of the martensite-austenite microconstituent and with the grain size. The GMAW welding highlights results: welding of the steel with 9% nickel with the Inconel 625 alloy makes an unmixed zone between the weld metal and the HAZ; the sample with all weld passes (CP3) shows the lowest energy absorbed in the Charpy V test among all the experiments; and the crack, in the Charpy V test, propagates in the unmixed zone in CP1 and CP2, which had the highest energies absorbed in the Charpy test. The CP3 shows crack propagation in the melting line and has the lowest energy absorbed in the Charpy V test.

Der Einfluß der Ausarbeitung mit verschiedenen rotierenden Instrumenten auf die Randqualität und Oberflächenmorphologie von zahnfarbigen lichthärtenden RestaurationenBunte, Henning 19 November 2001 (has links)
In dieser Studie wurde das Verhalten eines neuentwickelten Hartmetallfinierers der Firma Brasseler und herkömmlicher grober und feiner Diamantfinierer der Firmen Intensiv und Brasseler an vier verschiedenen Füllungsmaterialien untersucht. Bei dem Hartmetallfinierer handelt es sich um ein Kombinationsinstrument, das sich im Rechtslauf durch eine hohe Arbeitsleistung auszeichnet und zum Konturieren von Füllungen gedacht ist. Im Linkslauf soll das Instrument zur Feinausarbeitung eingesetzt werden, die Arbeitsleistung ist geringer. In 120 extrahierte menschliche Zähne wurden ovale Klasse-V-Kavitäten (Länge: 4 mm, Breite: 3 mm, Tiefe: 2 mm) präpariert, die jeweils zur Hälfte im Schmelz und Dentin lagen. Jeweils 30 Zähne wurden nach Herstellerangaben mit demselben Füllungsmaterial gefüllt (Prodigy, Silux Plus, Dyract AP, Fuji LC). Anschließend wurden die Restaurationen zunächst mit den gröberen Finierdiamanten und dem Kombifinierer im Rechtslauf konturiert. Jeweils 10 Proben eines jeden Füllungsmaterials wurden mit einem der Instrumente bearbeitet. Auf diese Weise ergaben sich 12 Material-Instrumenten-Kombinationen. Nach dreiwöchiger Wasserlagerung wurde die Rauhigkeit der Füllungsoberflächen mit einem Profilometer gemessen. Außerdem erfolgte eine Auswertung der Randqualität mittels quantitativer Randanalyse. Im Anschluß hieran wurden die Füllungen mit den feineren Diamantinstrumenten bzw. dem Kombifinierer im Linkslauf finiert. Die Füllungen wurden anschließend einer Temperaturwechselbelastung unterzogen (2000 Zyklen zwischen 5°C und 55°C). Erneut erfolgte eine quantitative Randanalyse und eine Oberflächenrauhigkeitsmessung. Die statistische Auswertung der Daten ergab, daß der Kombifinierer im Linkslauf im Gegensatz zu den feinen Diamantfinierern keine Verbesserung der Oberflächenqualität bewirkt. Die Auswirkungen der Instrumente auf die Randqualität ist gleich. Fuji LC weist die höchste Oberflächenrauhigkeit auf. Die übrigen Füllungsmaterialien unterscheiden sich diesbezüglich nicht statistisch signifikant voneinander. Die Silux Plus Restaurationen zeichnen sich durch einen im Vergleich zu den übrigen Materialien hohen Anteil an Randspalten sowohl im Dentin- als auch im Schmelzbereich aus. Die Prodigy Füllungen haben signifikant mehr Randspalten im Dentin als Fuji LC und Dyract AP Füllungen, jedoch auch signifikant weniger als Silux Plus im gleichen Bereich. / In this study a newly developed tungsten carbide finishing bur (Brasseler) and conventional coarse and fine grit finishing diamonds of the companies Intensiv and Brasseler were studied with four different filling-materials. The carbide bur is a combination-instrument, that distinguishes itself in the right-hand rotation by a high performance and is intended for the contouring of fillings. When used in a left-hand rotation the instrument should be applied for polishing. In this case the cutting performance is inferior. Oval class-V-cavities (length: 4 mm, width: 3 mm, depth: 2 mm) were prepared into 120 extracted human teeth with one half of the margin length in dentin and one half in enamel. In each case, 30 teeth were filled according to manufacturer-recommendation with the same filling-material (Prodigy, Silux Plus, Dyract AP, Fuji LC). Subsequently the restorations were trimmed with the coarser finishing diamonds and the combination bur with a right-hand rotation. Ten samples of each filling-material were ground with one of the instruments. Thus 12 material-instrument-combinations were established. After three weeks of water-storage, the surface roughness of the fillings was measured with a profilometer. Furthermore, an evaluation of the margin-quality was carried out by means of quantitative margin analysis. After this, the fillings were either polished with the finer diamond-instruments or with the combination-instrument in a left-hand rotation. Afterwards the samples were subjected to a thermocycling procedure (2000 cycles between 5°C and 55°C). Again a quantitative margin analysis and a surface-roughness-measurement were performed. In contrast to the fine diamond instruments, the statistical evaluation of the data revealed that the combination finishing bur does not improve the surface quality in a left-hand rotation. The effect of the instruments on the margin quality is the same. Fuji LC shows the highest surface-roughness, the other filling-materials do not differ statistically significantly from one another. The Silux Plus restorations are characterized by a high percentage of marginal openings in both enamel and dentin. The Prodigy fillings show significantly more marginal gaps in dentin than Fuji LC and Dyract AP fillings, but significantly less than Silux Plus in the same area.

The historically entangled private schooling and tourism industries have steadily communicated idealised images of educational tourism in Switzerland via advertising. Concentrating on the period 1890 -1945 – when promotional ties between tourism organisations and private schools solidified – this thesis investigates the social construction of educational tourist place in two different types of promotion aimed at English-speaking markets: private international school prospectuses and education-focused tourism brochures. An analysis of early prospectuses from three long-standing private international schools and of education-focused tourism guides written by municipal organisations, travel agencies, school boards and the Swiss government revealed highly visual, ideologically-charged textual representations of locations and markets simultaneously defined, idealised and commodified international education in Switzerland. Chapters provide close interpretation of documents and aim, through thick description, to understand specific place-making examples within a wider socio-historical context. Chapter One examines the earliest prospectuses of Le Rosey and Brillantmont, two of the world’s must exclusive Swiss schools (1890-1916). An examination of photo-essay style prospectuses reveals highly selective portrayals of “Château” architecture communicated capacity to deliver a “high-class” and gender appropriate Swiss finishing. Visual cues hallmarking literary and sporting preferences indicated texts catered to the gaze of social-climbing, Anglo-centric markets desirous a continental cosmopolitan education that was not overly “foreign.” Chapter Two analyses the social construction of towns in French-speaking Switzerland as attractive educational centres (1890-1914). It explores how guides promoting Geneva, Neuchâtel and Lausanne constructed an idealised study-abroad landscape through thematic testaments to the educative capacities of local human and natural landscapes. The remaining chapters explore interwar texts. Chapter Three examines a high-altitude institute’s use of the idealising skills of high-end tourism poster artists to manufacture a pleasant, school-like image for the mountain sanatoria-like campus of Beau Soleil. Chapter Four investigates two series of education-focused tourism guidebooks which promoted education in Switzerland. An examination of a Swiss National Tourist Office series reveals discourses of nationhood racialised the Swiss as natural-born pedagogues and constructed Switzerland as a safe, moral destination populated by cooperative, multi-lingual and foreign student-friendly folk. An analysis of R. Perrin Travel Agency’s series explores guidebooks which openly classified education as a tourism commodity. The final chapter examines Le Rosey and Brillantmont’s interwar prospectuses within the context of complex, transnational schooling and school advertising practices. An analysis of images of school sports at winter holiday resorts suggests prospectuses expressed the sense of freedom which accompanies upper-class identity more so than any sense of gender-driven restriction.

Stereolithography Characterization for Surface Finish Improvement: Inverse Design Methods for Process PlanningSager, Benay 11 April 2006 (has links)
To facilitate the transition of Stereolithography (SLA) into the manufacturing domain and to increase its appeal to the micro manufacturing industry, process repeatability and surface finish need to be improved. Researchers have mostly focused on improving SLA surface finish within the capabilities of commercially available SLA machines. The capabilities of these machines are limited and a machine-specific approach for improving surface finish is based purely on empirical data. In order to improve surface finish of the SLA process, a more systematic approach that will incorporate process parameters is needed. To achieve this, the contribution of different laser and process parameters, such as laser beam angle, irradiance distribution, and scan speed, to SLA resolution and indirectly to surface finish, need to be quantified and incorporated into an analytical model.
In response, a dynamic analytical SLA cure model has been developed. This model has been applied to SLA geometries of interest. Using flat surfaces, the efficacy of the model has been computationally and experimentally demonstrated. The model has been applied to process planning as a computational inverse design method by using parameter estimation techniques, where surface finish improvement on slanted surfaces has been achieved. The efficacy of this model and its improvement over the traditional cure models has been demonstrated computationally and experimentally. Based on the experimental results, use of the analytical model in process planning achieves an order of magnitude improvement in surface roughness average of SLA parts. The intellectual contributions of this research are the development of an analytical SLA cure model and the application of this model to process planning along with inverse design techniques for parameter estimation and subsequent surface finish improvement.

Fundamental investigations on the barrier effect of polyester micro fiber fabrics towards particle-loaded liquids induced by surface hydrophobizationIslam, Md. Nazirul 06 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
As the title implies, the chief goal of the present work is the improvement of the barrier effects of textile fabrics in the medical sector, in particular, in the operating room, which would be an effective safeguard against the causative pathogens allowing the health workers to work in and around hostile atmospheres and to accomplish useful tasks. To overcome the inherent drawbacks of surgical gown from classical fibers of both natural and synthetic origins, polyester micro filament fabric, down to 0.62 dtex per filament, was used to substitute them. Two major pathways have been chosen to render the surface hydrophobic: - Wet-chemical treatment - Plasma modification For the maximum efficiency of a specific wet-chemical, the following application formulations were found to be best effective: pH =4-5 Drying temperature and time=100°C / 90s Pick-up = 80% Curing temperature and time= 160°C / 120s A range of physical and chemical parameters have been found exerting significant influence on the extent of modification of the material: - Wetting agent - Amount of fluorine content in the chemical - Subsequent heat treatment of the finished material after washing - Ironing of the fabric For the plasma enhanced surface fluorination the following plasma gases were used: - Saturated fluorine compounds: CF4 and C2F6 - Reducing agent: H2 and C2H4 The exposure of the substrate to a pure C2F6 discharge resulted in higher hydrophobicity than the substrates exposed to CF4 plasma. Stepwise increased mixture of H2 or C2H4 to a proportionally decreased amount of C2F6 plasma showed a gradual decrease in contact angle and a substantial increase in sliding angle values. In addition to the treatments with gas mixtures a two-step technique, i.e., treatment with C2H4 prior to C2F6 plasma, was applied that appeared to be very promising in modifying the surface characteristics. Both, the contact angles and the sliding angles remaining almost constant on a very high level with increasing amount of C2H4 in the feed composition. An essentially vital concern of the work was the characterization of the treatment effect comprising both physical and chemical aspects. By washing the materials for 20 times no significant impairment of hydrophobic character has been noticed in case of fluorocarbon finishing agents as well as by the surface treated with C2H4 followed by C2F6 plasma (i.e., a two-step technique), wherein a complete loss of hydrophobic effect washing the silicone-treated materials for 10 times was observed. In breathability aspect, the plasma modification was found to be the best-suited technique with zero reduction of air permeability in comparison to wet-chemical finishing. The barrier test as a measure of dye absorption was conducted using protein solution, synthetic and human blood and the efficiency were verified by colorimetric technique. In contrast to pure plasma treatments, modification of the fabric with plasma in two-step treatment as well as with wet-finishing method using fluorocarbon compounds were completely impervious to artificial and real blood. The most striking feature was the zero uptake of the protein solution by all treated surfaces.
