This study investigated the problem that educators have throughout the state of Texas. The problem educators have is that reading scores continue to fall short of state expectations. This study investigated the effectiveness of 90 minutes of class time given for reading to students who use the Electronic Bookshelf Program and the effectiveness of the Electronic Bookshelf Program, which is being sold to school districts throughout the nation. The literature review focused on the effectiveness of independent reading on reading achievement, and the effectiveness of using computer-based reading programs to increase reading achievement.

Effects of Computer-Assisted Instruction on Attitudes and Achievement of Fourth Grade Students in Reading and Mathematics

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of participation in a Computer-Assisted instructional program (CAI) on fourth grade student attitudes and achievement in reading and mathematics. This study, based on Campbell and Stanley's quasiexperimental design 10, utilized Diascriptive Reading software for the CAI mathematics group and Milliken Math Sequences software for the CAI mathematics group and was completed by 242 students. The time span between pretests and posttests was seven months. Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, Level 10, Form 7/8 was used for achievement testing and Estes Attitude Scale was used for attitude testing. Analysis of covariance was used to determine significance at the .05 level. The findings for this study were: 1. Reading Comprehension posttest scores were significantly higher for the control group than for the reading experimental group; 2. Reading Comprehension posttest scores were not significantly higher for boys than for girls within the reading experimental group; 3. Total math posttest scores were significantly higher for the mathematics experimental group than for the control group; 4. Concepts and Computation math subsets posttest scores were significantly higher for the mathematics experimental group than for the control group. There were no significant differences between the posttest scores of the two groups for the Math Problem Solving subset; 5. Total Math posttest scores were not significantly different for boys than for girls within the mathematics experimental group; 6. Attitude toward reading posttest scores were significantly higher for the reading experimental group than for the control group; 7. Attitude toward reading posttest scores were not significantly different for the boys than for girls within the reading experimental group; 8. Attitude toward mathematics posttest scores were significantly higher for the mathematics experimental group than for the control group; 9. Attitude toward mathematics posttest scores were significantly higher for girls than for boys within the mathematics experimental group.

Básnické miniatury jako způsob hledání nového začátku v čínské poezii 20. století / Miniature Poems as a Means of Seeking New Beginings for Chinese Poetry in the 20th Century

This thesis deals with miniature poems, which appeared at the beginning of the May fourth movement, as a genre of modern chinese poetry and was redoscovered by the misty poets after the Cultural revolution. Part of a brief introduction to the literary- historical contexts of both periods are short biographies of two representative poets of this genre, Bing Xin and Gu Cheng. Eventually the form and themes of miniature poems are introduced. The main part of this thesis is a comparative study of Bing Xin's and Gu Cheng's miniature poems. The thesis concludes, that Gu Cheng refines and eleborates the artistic value of the miniature poem. The thesis "The Second Roman Ride of the Charles the Fourth" tries to cover the whole campaign of the Emperor Charles IV. between years 1368 and 1369. Also, thesis follows the basic questions related to the issues of the royal court during the journey. The first of those questions is about accompaniment of the Emperor Charles IV. on his journey across the Italian territory and how the court was transformed during the ride to Rome and back. The second question points out the effort to build the court of the Elizabeth of Pomerania, who was crucial person of the second Roman ride where she did not travel alongside the emperor. The last question attempts to describe the undergirding of the court during the campaign in italian cities - how the emperor and his court was accepted and welcomed, accommodated, supllied and gifted.

An Exploratory Study of Teachers' Uses of Data to Understand Students' Cognitive and Affective Engagement

Since its introduction in the 1980's, student engagement has been a popular topic in educational research. In the beginning, engagement was thought of as a simple construct; however, it is now believed that student engagement involves four separate, but equally important components (Appleton, 2012; Christenson, Reschly, Appleton, Berman, Spanjers, & Varro, 2008). The components of academic, behavioral, affective and cognitive engagement are each vital to the ongoing educational success of students, and ideally, these would remain high throughout all of the years that students are in school. Unfortunately, research shows that most students' engagement levels continuously decrease from elementary school until high school graduation (or dropout), with the biggest drops occurring when students transition to middle school and high school (Alexander, Entwisle, & Horsey, 1997; Dunleavy & Milton, 2008; Finn, Pannozzo, & Voelkl, 1995; Lopez, 2011; Roeser, Strobel, & Quihuis, 2002; Skinner et al., 2009). Much of the research is currently being done at the middle and high school level to try and re-engage students in their learning (Appleton, 2012; Appleton, Christenson, Kim & Reschley, 2006; Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004). This research study, however, looked at the implications of engagement data collection with fourth grade students. This mixed-methods study had two main goals. The first goal of the study was to determine the benefits of providing teachers with a systematic approach to collecting and following data on students' affective and cognitive engagement levels over time. The second goal of the study was to begin to explore interventions that appeared to increase fourth grade students' affective and cognitive engagement levels. The data analysis showed that students consistently reported lower engagement scores in the areas of teacher and peer relationships at school. It was also found that teachers did not report using student engagement data to make whole class interventions, but teachers did report the desire to track individual student's engagement scores in order to implement individualized interventions, when needed. Three additional findings, as well as suggestions for future research, are also presented. In the end, the study concludes with a more broad view on how this research can be used to impact the field of education. The ideas of teacher awareness, power in schools, and the need to create safe and caring classrooms that include students in the decision making process are all discussed as important components needed to engage students. Final suggestions have also been given for both teachers and administrators on how best to increase student engagement in the school or school district where they are working.

Optou-se por verificar um ano de postagens no blog Escreva Lola Escreva e selecionar, por mês, os posts com maior número de comentários para, posteriormente, fazer uma análise das temáticas discutidas. Essa escolha metodológica se pauta no fato dos posts mais comentados terem suscitado maior discussão e interesse. Não foi objetivo dessa pesquisa analisar o teor desses comentários. Eles serviram de critério para seleção do corpus. Diante dos resultados apontados pela análise de dados realizada no corpus documental, o que chama atenção é a interação dos(as) leitores(as) enquanto sujeitos ativos, e eventuais mudanças de opinião e modo de encarar a vida, a partir daquelas interações. Destaca-se como categoria recorrente a crítica ao patriarcado em diversas perspectivas. Isso reforça a ideia da percepção crítica do sistema opressor, centrado no homem. À luz da análise empírica e apoiando-se na literatura pode-se afirmar a existência da Quarta Onda do Movimento Feminista, caracterizado pelo ativismo digital. Por apresentar e oportunizar as discussões e pautas vivenciadas no âmbito social, atesta que os movimentos sociais digitais estão conquistando espaço e representatividade. / The present dissertation contemplated the study of the Fourth Wave of the Feminist Social Movement, justifying itself in the face of the social changes provoked by information technology in promoting and disseminating the ideals that constitute this facet of the Movement. Focusing on the action of feminism on the internet, specifically addressed the collection of data from a feminist blog. As a general objective, the aim was to analyze the configuration of the feminist movement in the specificity of digital activism, its proposals for discussion and timelines opportunized via technological tools, specifically the internet, in the process of dissemination of the feminist struggle for the expansion of rights. It was chosen to check one year of posting of the blog “Escreva Lola Escreva” and select, each month, the posts with the highest number of comments to later make an analysis of the topics discussed. This methodological choice is based on the fact that the most commented posts have generated greater discussion and interest. It was not the purpose of this research to analyze the comments. They served as criteria for corpus selection. Considering the results pointed out by data analysis performed without documentary corpus, what draws attention is an interaction of readers as active subjects and possible changes of opinion and ways of facing life, from those interactions. It is highlighted as a recurrent category the critique of patriarchy in several perspectives. It reinforces the idea of the critical perception of the oppressive system, centered in men. Considering the empirical analysis and based on the literature, one can affirm the existence of the Fourth Wave of the Feminist Movement, characterized by digital activism. By presenting and opportuning the discussions and guidelines experienced in the social sphere, it testifies that digital social movements are gaining space and representativeness.

O conceito da Indústria 4.0 foi elaborado objetivando a melhoria de produtividade e da qualidade através da aplicação de recursos digitais, economicamente viáveis nos sistemas empresariais. O Brasil, que neste momento passa por um processo de desindustrialização, pode abordar esta nova realidade de duas formas: abrir mão desta nova tendência, de maneira passiva, devido a sua condição econômica e estrutural; ou, por outro lado, ativamente adaptar os recursos viáveis de maneira a coletar o melhor retorno sobre investimento da digitalização na indústria. A metodologia utilizada para realização do trabalho foi a Design Science Reseach. Na busca do equacionamento do problema de pesquisa, criou-se um método para realizar um diagnóstico da situação atual da empresa estudada, e formatar um plano de implementação dos elementos da Indústria 4.0 viáveis, que priorize os melhores retornos sobre investimento na condição situacional, levando-se em conta o atual ambiente interno e externo da fábrica estudada. Para construção da proposta inicial do método, versão M0, foi feito um amplo levantamento bibliográfico. Uma vez sugerido, o M0 foi ajustado utilizando-se de especialistas em um grupo focal, gerando o método a ser aplicado em uma empresa pertencente à indústria metalmecânica brasileira. Ao final da aplicação M0, foi elaborado um plano de implementação processual dos elementos da Indústria 4.0 adaptado a realidade da empresa em questão. Realizou-se então uma avaliação crítica desta aplicação, para medir a validade do Modelo e seus pontos de melhoria, visando enriquecer e gerar uma versão final intitulada de M1. / This master thesis presents the application of Industry 4.0 elements into 2018 reality of Brazilian metalworking industry. Industry 4.0 concept was created targeting productivity and quality improvements, through digital resources, economically feasible in corporate systems. Brazil, that is under a deindustrialization process, can face this new reality in two ways: given up of new tendency, being passive due to its economic and structural condition; or, by the other hand, adapting in an active way its feasible resources, to collect the digital best return on investments in the industry. The methodology applied was the Design Science Research. To answer the research problem, a diagnosis and implementation plan method were arranged, to apply viable Industry 4.0 elements, prioritizing the best return of investments of factual internal and external ambient of situated factory. To build up the M0 version method, it was made a wide bibliographic study. Once suggested, M0 was adjusted by specialists into a focal group generating the method to be applied into a Brazilian metalworking industry company. By the end of M0 application, a processual action plan was raised, shaped to the studied company atmosphere. Then, an evaluation analysis of this application was made, to validate the model and its improvement points, to generate a final version termed M1.

Those elders, only due to their advanced age, are generally put aside in reason of doubts about their lucidity and capacity of production. Thus, it is possible to affirm that the interviewed persons of this job resisted to the social conception of oldness, especially those who are over eighty years old. For the reflection of these persons and their work it was necessary to investigate the meaning of being old in the society of nowadays, the nature of the artistic production and the exercise of creation. The direct contact with the interviewed elderly and their work afforded to enter in their universe, their subjectiviness and the particular way they find to deal with the reality of oldness. This study proposes to show the individuality of well successful oldness based on creative activities / O tema do presente estudo aborda a criação artística praticada por idosos não profissionais que alcançaram e ultrapassaram os noventa anos de vida. Idosos nonagenários apenas em virtude da idade avançada que possuem, de forma geral são questionados em relação à sua lucidez e capacidade produtiva. Dessa maneira os entrevistados resistiram à visão social delegada ao idoso, especialmente àqueles que atingiram a quarta idade, que se inicia a partir dos oitenta anos. Para a reflexão desses sujeitos e o significado de suas produções foi necessário investigar o que representa ser idoso na sociedade atual, a natureza da produção artística e o exercício da criação. O contato direto com os entrevistados e suas obras proporcionaram o ingresso parcial no universo desses indivíduos, suas subjetividades e a forma particular que encontraram para lidar com as realidades da velhice. A proposta desse estudo é mostrar as individualidades de velhices bem sucedidas apoiadas na prática e no desenvolvimento de atividades criadoras

What do British accountants think of the accounting and financial harmonisation which applies to listed companies in the EU?

Abstract Under de senaste decennierna har den finansiella globaliseringen ökat, vilket har lett till ekonomiska och politiska förändringar, samt en ökad global konkurrens. Dessa förändringar har i sin tur lett till ett större krav på hög kvalitet av bokföringsprinciper. Då olikheter inom exempelvis legala, politiska, ekonomiska och kulturella faktorer har lett till utvecklandet av olika bokförings principer i olika länder, kan det i nuläget vara svårt för investerare och externa aktörer att förstå och bedöma finansiella rapporter länder emellan. Således hade det underlättat med gemensamma bestämmelser av bokföringsprinciper, vilket hade ökat jämförbarheten, relevansen samt trovärdigheten av företag som verkar inom samma marknad men är baserade i olika länder. Eftersom ett av Europeiska Unionens mål är att främja en enda gemensam marknad, vilket görs genom att harmonisera lagarna medlemsstaterna emellan, så har EU även introducerat en harmonisering av bokföringslagar. Harmonisering av redovisningssystemen är nödvändigt för att uppnå en enda gemensam marknad inom EU. Arbetet mot en harmonisering av redovisningssystemen startade redan i slutet av 50-talet när EU bildades, men är fortfarande inte helt utvecklat. Syftet med denna uppsats är att beskriva vad brittiska revisorer tycker om den finansiella harmoniseringen av redovisningsprinciper. Målsättningen är att utifrån denna undersökning kunna svara på huruvida harmoniseringen är fördelaktig för börsnoterade företag i Storbritannien, enligt revisorers åsikt. Studien har bedrivits med en kvalitativ uppläggning. Efter att ha studerat befintliga teorier och information på området, genomfördes en empirisk undersökning genom omfattande intervjuer via telefon med två revisorer i Storbritannien. Utifrån vår undersökning kom vi fram till att våra två respondenter över lag har en positiv inställning till harmoniseringen samt att de anser harmoniseringen vara fördelaktig för börsnoterade företag i Storbritannien, men att implementeringen av de standardiserade redovisningsprinciperna är förknippad med ett flertal svårigheter, framför allt en hög kostnad.

下半年盈餘管理與年度盈餘資訊內涵關係之研究 / Interim Earnings Management and The Fourth Quarter Good News Effect

本研究觀察臺灣新上市公司的盈餘管理行為是否傾向於下半年或第四 季。且不同季別盈餘管理的舉措是否與股價操縱有關?如果答案為肯定, 則我國股市的資源與財富分配效效果,需進一步探討,並提出改良的方法 。 為驗證上述兩者之關聯性,本研究以民國 80 年至民國 83 年所有上市公司之年度財 務資訊與季資訊為樣本,用市場模式衡量 異常報酬,並比較年度間各類之淨應計項目,以 探討盈餘有用性、盈餘 管理之季節效應,及其與資訊內涵的關係。其實證結果顯示: (一)年度盈餘及季盈餘具資訊內涵,且季盈餘資訊內涵間具差異性。 (二)公司管理當局之年度間盈餘管理行為並未如預期地傾向於第四季或 下半年。 (三)公司管理當局年度間盈餘管理在好壞消息的樣本間是具差異性的,且在好消息 樣本間較顯著。 (四)公司管理當 局會利用季盈餘管理之結果來操縱股價。 綜合上述實證結果,由於盈餘資訊內涵的存在,對一般投資者而言,盈餘是有用的資訊,而公司當理當局會在年度中各季間從事盈餘管理行為來達成其預定目標。與本研究的 預期不同,公司管理當局不會在第四季或下半年特別作盈餘管理。由於我國股市投機風氣較盛,管理當局可能利用財務預測資訊或其他資訊來操縱股價,遠比盈餘管理有效。然原因如何尚待進一步探討。
