Sex sells - does child sexual abuse? : A quantitative study examining the history ofevocative language use in Swedish newspapersregarding child sexual abuse

Orneklint, Sanna January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine and analyze the news valuetheory and framing of news regarding child sexual abuse. The researchquestions for this study were:What changes can be found in the use of evocative language in crimejournalism regarding cases of sexual abuse towards children? Are there any clear differences in the language used when investigating theperspectives of objective, sensational and local journalism? The study has been conducted via a quantitative analysis, analyzing 1460articles, from three different newspapers archives. From 1994 up until 2020.The newspapers in the analysis are three Swedish newspapers, Aftonbladet,Dagens Nyheter and Barometern. To arrive at my conclusion, I measured thefrequency of a selected group of evocative words, measuring across the threenewspapers how often the words occurred as well as during what timeperiods.Through the analysis I found that Swedish newspapers, no matter theirdirection towards sensationalism, kept a neutral and objective tone regardingchild sexual abuse in most cases. With not so many cases of purely evocativewords.

Morner, Filippa January 2019 (has links)
This study examines the part that Swedish newspapers play in the context of constructing responsibility for the climate crisis in Swedish society. This is done by studying how two of the biggest newspapers in Sweden, Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet, portray different actors’ responsibilities in the climate crisis in their news articles. It is of high relevance to study newspapers’ distribution of responsibility since previous research has shown that news media can affect both the perception of events and topics in society, as well as attitudes and behaviours in regards to those events and topics. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of how the newspapers’ distribution of responsibility can affect the perception of responsibility as well as the management of the climate crisis in the Swedish society. The material is analyzed through the theory of framing and the environmental communication research’s view that communication about the environment shapes the perception and therefore the form of the environment. The result shows that news articles mainly give responsibility to political actors, that companies’ responsibility is pushed over to political actors or placed between both companies and political actors where companies get the lesser responsibility, and that individuals are given a minimal amount of responsibility. The main conclusion is that the newspapers do not distribute responsibility evenly among the essential actors, which can be seen as problematic since climate research mean that all actors in society must act to solve the climate crisis.

Den polariserande politikern : En kvalitativ studie av hur Boris Johnson gestaltas i svensk och brittisk press / The polarising politician : A qualitative study of Boris Johnson in Swedish and British newspapers.

Orneklint, Sanna January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this bachelors thesis has been to examine and analyse the framing used when reporting about Boris Johnson in context with Brexit in both Swedish and British media coverage. The research questions examined in this study were: In what way is Boris Johnson framed in British and Swedish media coverage surrounding Brexit in his first three weeks as prime minister? What could explain the possible differences that occurs between the Swedish and British media coverage? I have in combination with a qualitative text analysis as well as framing theory and news valuation theory analysed material from four major news papers. Two news papers from Sweden, Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. As well as two from Great Britain, The Guardian UK and The Sun UK. One of each county’s news paper focuses on qualitative and objective journalism and one from each country which can be regarded as a tabloid, evening paper, from these four news papers a total of 12 articles, three from each paper was selected. To arrive at my conclusion every article was analysed trough what frame, conflict, personification or elite person, Boris Johnson was portrayed as well as if the frames felt clear, subtle or well as if any frame could not be found in the text. Through the analysis I found the result to be that every article had personified Boris Johnson with Brexit, even if the article did not directly have a focus on the Brexit conflict. The personification is a constant backgrung trough every individual article. Secondly I found that the frames through which the newspapers portrayed conflict differed, depending from which country the news paper reported from. The Swedish news papers portrayed conflict through a broader perspective, having a stronger focus on Brexit as a concept whilst the British newspaper framed conflict in a much more detailed way. Focusing on more detailed topics with higher interest for the british population.

The woman and the “Aftonbladet coworker” : A critical discourse analysis of how Cissi Wallin and Fredrik Virtanen were framed during #metoo.

Milerud, Evelina, Akbarzadeh, Jasmin January 2022 (has links)
This study examines how the Swedish journalists Cissi Wallin and Fredrik Virtanen were framed and reported in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet during their conflict during the #metoo movement. The actor Alyssa Milano used the words me too in a hashtag to put a light on her sexual assaulter, Harvey Weinstein, and encouraged other women on social media to do the same.  In Sweden Cissi Wallin was one of the first women to use the hashtag and tell her own story of how she was drugged and raped by Fredrik Virtanen in the year of 2006, who at the time was an employee at Aftonbladet. It was the start of a media scandal that would be continued for years after #metoo had its beginning. The ways that the media has been reporting about women in the manner of being a victim, has been shown in earlier studies being very gender stereotypical. The purpose of the study was to use Judith Butler's theory of gender and examine how Cissi Wallin and Fredrik Virtanen are framed based upon gender. By using Jesper Strömbäcks theory of news evaluation the study will look at how Aftonbladet has used both Wallin and Virtanen as opponent themes in their articles and in which ways they are framed. With the use of Adam Shehatas framing theory the study will also take a closer look at how Cissi Wallin and Fredrik Virtanen were framed in these articles. Both each individual and their relationship. The method used to examine the topic of the study was by a critical discourse theory which led to numerous themes showing that Aftonbladet used the power of being a big news source and also the employer of Virtanen to make Wallin the guilty one by the ways she was framed. Among other things the result showed how Aftonbladet used their position to neglect Wallins story by taking sides with Virtanen during the period of the conflict.

The land that goes underground : Morning newspapers' representation of shelters in Sweden.

Antonia, Hammarström January 2023 (has links)
Nyckelord: Skyddsrum, gestaltningsteori, riskperception, kvalitativ innehållsanalys / Summary  In Sweden, there are around 65,000 shelters, which should be enough for approximately 10 million people. The building of shelters began in the late 1930s until 2002. Since Sweden has not been involved in any war for many years, shelter construction has been able to continue. In 2022, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine which led to a changed security policy situation in the world but also for Sweden. The purpose of the study is to examine how the importance of shelters in Sweden has been discussed in Swedish morning newspapers over time. How the need for shelters has been presented, as well as how there has been talk about shelters linked to risk perception. Questions: ·       How have shelters been discussed in Swedish morning newspapers? ·       Has the attitude to the relevance of the shelter in Sweden changed over time in Swedish morning newspapers and if so, how? Newspaper articles from Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet between the years 1994–2022 have been analyzed using the analytical method qualitative content analysis. Framing theory and risk perception are the theoretical frameworks that have been used to interpret the results. The themes that were most prominent in Swedish morning newspapers regarding shelters were six: Need for shelters, Will everyone have a place in the shelters? The time aspect, Sweden has been spared from war, Pride, Influenced by the Ukraine war. The attitude towards shelters has changed during the period 1994–2022. From 1994 until 2021, the attitude towards the relevance of the shelter in Sweden was predominantly negative or neutral. A clear shift in this matter took place in 2022, when the attitude to the relevance of the shelter was portrayed as positive. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been a highly influencing factor for the new positive attitude towards shelters in Sweden. Keywords: Shelter, framing theory, risk perception, qualitative content analysis

The portrayal of celebrity scandals in evening newspapers from a gender perspective : A comparative quantitative study on how Margaux Dietz and Paolo Roberto are portrayed in relation to their scandals

Pagels, Märta, Karlsson, Ebba January 2023 (has links)
This study has examined how the celebrities Paolo Roberto and Margaux Dietz were portrayed in the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen in connection with their scandals in 2020 and 2022. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether there are gender stereotypes in the way Roberto and Dietz are portrayed in newspapers, and to see what similarities and differences can be observed in the representation of the celebrities in text and image. The theoretical framework of the study is based on framing, theories of gender, theories about scandals and media logic. The method used in the study is a quantitative content analysis. The results show that Dietz was portrayed in a more negative way than Roberto, who was portrayed more neutral. The results also showed that Roberto was primarily discussed from a professional perspective, while Dietz was more often discussed from a private perspective. When the celebrities were represented in images, the results showed that Dietz was more frequently shown smiling and looking into the camera. Based on the results, we can conclude that Roberto and Dietz are portrayed differently in the reporting of their scandals in newspapers, both in text and image. We see that these gender stereotypes that have emerged in previous research largely agree with this study. Through a gender perspective, many of the differences can be linked to the gender stereotypes and structures of masculinity and femininity that have long existed in our society.
