Děti v azylových domech - vnímání pobytu a jeho hodnocení / Childer in Asylum Homes - Residency Perception and Its Evaluation

ŠMRHOVÁ, Jana January 2013 (has links)
The title of the thesis is Children in children´s homes ? perception of residential stays and their assessment. The first chapter provides the paper´s theoretical groundwork and consists of five sections that define the basic terminology and outline the key issues related to the thesis´ topic. The first section describes the development of social services and children´s homes as well as the current situation regarding shelter homes for parents and single mothers with children in the Czech Republic. The second section provides an insight into the phases of childhood corresponding to the age structure of the group of children that participated in the questionnaire survey described in the practical part of the thesis. The description of the individual phases focuses primarily on psychological development, the phases´ key moments and objectives and on the relationships with family, friends and peers. The third section looks into the influence of the environment on an individual´s development and life quality, focusing on home, family, the understanding of home and the influence of colours. The fourth section narrows its focus onto children in children´s homes. The second chapter is practical-oriented. It starts with a definition of the paper´s objective and its four hypotheses. The objective of the thesis is to identify variable factors influencing how children perceive their residential stays in children´s homes. The following chapter provides an insight into the research methods and the techniques used to collect the data. It also defines the target group and describes the actual research process. The research was carried out on the basis of a quantitative method, using data collected by means of a questionnaire survey. The target group consisted of 132 children aged 8 to 14living in shelter homes for mothers with children in the Czech Republic. The survey was conducted from 30th October to 29th November 2012. The fourth chapter presents the results of the research. It is divided into two sections. The first provides descriptive statistics of the questionnaire survey results, giving an overview of the answers to individual questions. The second sectionuses the SPSS 16.0 software to test the individual hypotheses and determine the dependent variables. Hypothesis H1: The presence of friends in a children´s home has a positive influence on a child´s impression of the children´s home. The influence of friends on the child´s impression of the children´s home is analysed in the following aspects: the building of the children´s home, the room in the children´s home and the interior of the children´s home. It has been proven that having friends in the children´s home positively influences only the impression of the child´s room. Hypothesis H2: The more often children stay in children´s homes, the more they like their stay. This hypothesis has not been confirmed. Hypothesis H3: The younger the children, the more they like their stay in the children´s homes. A statistically significant relation between the age and the positive acceptance of the stay in the children´s homes has been established. Hypothesis H4: The presence of friends has a positive influence on the feeling the children get from the home. Also in this case a statistically significant relation has been confirmed. Chapter five presents a discussion of the results, comparing the hypotheses and the findings of the questionnaire survey. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the research results and discusses the general situation of children in homes and the handicap connected with their stay there. At the very end, the paper reflects on the situation and possible recommendations for practical work.

We have also tried to evidence how such learners assess the level of their English discursive knowledge by means of discursive practices involving humor, as well as the implications of such appropriation to their future careers as teachers of English as L2/FL. Data were collected in an English intermediate group of undergraduates of Letras/Inglês of the Universidade Federal de Goiás. Efforts were made to design and integrate activities focusing on the humor of the American situation comedy Friends (BRIGHT; KAUFFMAN; CRANE, 1994-2004) into eight classes of the original course program taking place between November 2015 and February 2106. Four Friends episodes were explored. The data collection was carried out by means of a questionnaire, video and audio recordings of the classes, field notes of the teacher-researcher observations and audios of interviews made with each participant after the classroom work was over. This paper is based on the dialogic perspective of Bakhtin (2011, 2012, 2014), on humor studies with emphasis on L2/FL teaching and learning (BELL; POMERANTZ, 2014; 2015; 2016) as well as on the nexus between humor, language and culture (KRAMSCH, 1998, 2013; RISAGER, 2006; CORBETT, 2003, POPA, 2014; DAVIES, 2014; DICIOCCIO; MICZO, 2014; ATTARDO, 1994, 2014). The data analysis reveals that the participants’ different levels of comprehension and appreciation of humor in Friends depend both on their linguistic proficiency and on their background knowledge on American culture and of world globalized culture. Such factors led to the active and responsive engagement of the undergraduates in dialogical interactions and the collective construction of meanings during the classes. As the participants positioned themselves at different levels of appropriation of the humor in the LC2, they also recognized the importance of such factor in the construction of their subjectivities as future English teachers.

Not-so-casual Sex: Definitions and Scripts for Modern Sexual Relationships

Wentland, Jocelyn J. January 2014 (has links)
Casual sexual relationships are common forms of modern sexual relationships. Researchers are paying increased attention to these relationship types, but have been remiss in ensuring that the definitions of the relationships under investigation match participants’ conceptualizations. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to determine whether definitions and behavioural scripts for casual sexual relationships can be identified. In Study 1, 23 young adults discussed initiation, maintenance, and termination components of various casual sexual relationships in focus groups and developed consensus definitions for each relationship. Each focus group independently identified four casual sexual relationships: One Night Stand, Booty Call, Fuck Buddies, and Friends with Benefits. These four relationships were the focus of subsequent exploration. Building on the qualitative descriptions created in the focus groups, an online survey was used to determine whether relationship definitions and associated script behaviours could be confirmed in a larger sample (N = 885). In Study 2, a restricted age subsample (i.e., 18-29 years) was used to determine if emerging adults endorsed the proposed definitions. A majority of the sample endorsed the definitions for One Night Stand (96%), Booty Call (93%), Fuck Buddies (83%), and Friends with Benefits (87%). A larger proportion of individuals with sexual intercourse experience endorsed the definitions compared to those without sexual intercourse experience, while previous casual sex experience did not affect definition endorsements. Women demonstrated greater precision in identifying the definitions. In Study 3, the full sample of 885 participants was used to identify the specific script behaviours associated with each relationship. Using behaviourally descriptive items (N = 62) derived from Study 1, participants identified 12 script items for One Night Stand, Booty Call, and Friends with Benefits and 10 script items for Fuck Buddies. Individuals with previous sexual intercourse experience were more adept at identifying the specific behavioural script items, while previous casual sex experience did not affect script endorsements. Again, women were particularly adept at identifying the specific script items. Overall, these findings suggest that specific definitions and respective scripts exist for the One Night Stand, Booty Call, Fuck Buddies, and Friends with Benefits relationships. This knowledge appears broad and may be considered as socio-cultural knowledge of young adults. Numerous implications flow from the understanding that young adults implicitly know what behaviours are associated with these popular forms of casual sexual relationships. Researchers need to ensure they use scientifically sound definitions in order to develop a more sophisticated lexicon of (casual sex) relationships and understand how modern sexual relationships fit within the scope of potential relationship options.

Effects of the FRIENDS for Life Program on Anxiety, School Functioning, and Social Functioning

Kavanagh, Candice January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the current pilot trial was to evaluate the effects of the group-based FRIENDS for Life (FFL) program on school and social functioning in children with elevated levels of anxiety. Participants were 15 children aged eight to 12 identified by their parents as experiencing elevated levels of anxiety. Children attended six two-hour sessions of the FFL program and completed measures of anxiety, school functioning, and social functioning at pre- and post-treatment. Results indicated nonsignificant reductions from pre- to post-treatment in both child- and parent-report anxiety with large and medium effect sizes, respectively. Working memory scores increased significantly and there was a trend toward a significant increase in academic performance; large within group effects were found for both increases. The increase in academic functioning scores was significant with a moderate effect size only for child-report scores. A significant improvement with a large effect size was found for child-report peer relations scores and significant decreases were found for parent-report asocial behaviour and relational aggression scores, both with moderate effect sizes. Overall, children in this study demonstrated improvements in anxiety, school functioning, and social functioning. While reduction in anxiety is the primary focus of the FFL program additional benefits include improvements in school and social functioning. Though results are encouraging it is important to note that this was an uncontrolled pilot study with a small sample size. Thus results should be interpreted with caution. Nevertheless, the generally positive findings of this trial suggest a larger controlled trial is warranted. If these findings are replicated in a larger trial, the FFL may be a cost-effective, easily implemented, and versatile anxiety prevention program that can help change the trajectory of anxious children’s school and social functioning.

Alkoholkonsumtion bland skolungdomar i Stockholm

Jörgensen, Hampus, Arledal, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
Alcohol consumption among adolescents is important to discuss due to its several negative consequences: use of alcohol in the stage of physical development can lead to both mental and physical injuries. This study intends to examine three risk factors connected to adolescence alcohol use: family, school and circle of friends. The study is based on three research questions: how much does risk factors in the friend circle effect adolescents use of alcohol? How much does the risk factors in the family effect adolescents use of alcohol? How much does the risk factors in school effect adolescents use of alcohol? The result shows that friends who use alcohol have the largest impact on adolescents use of alcohol, while family and school also have an impact but to a lesser extent.

Can I and AI be Friends? : Robots and personal relationships / Kan Jag och AI vara Vänner? : Robotar och personliga relationer

Beran, Tâm January 2020 (has links)
To exist is to relate. As human, you are relating to other beings, animate and inanimate entities, physical objects and abstract ideas. A kind of relationship that affects our life and wellbeing in a most concrete sense is that between humans. Modern technology has made it possible to create artificial intelligence (AI) that has become increasingly integrated in our everyday life. AI can be distinguished between weak or strong, that is whether the AI appears to have human mental capacities or in fact has these capacities. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether AI and humans can be friends, based on the condition of them having equal moral status, as well as the concept of friendship as defined by LaFollette. According to LaFollette, a friendship is defined as a relationship that is voluntary, reciprocal and where you relate to each other as unique individuals.   If considering life as essential for moral status, true friendship is not possible between a human and an AI, weak or strong. Other criteria for moral status are the capacity of feeling pleasure and pain, being conscious and having a mind. Although weak AI would behave as if it has human mental capacities, it cannot have the same moral status as humans, and consequently cannot be involved in a genuine friendship in this framework. On the other hand, a strong AI would have equal moral status as a human, and a relationship with such an AI would have all the essential properties required for a friendship as defined by LaFollette. However, from a subjective point of view, it is possible to create unidirectional emotions towards an AI regardless of it having a mind or not.
