Matematikläroböcker och genus : En läromedelsanalys ur ett genusperspektiv / Mathematics textbooks and gender : A textbook analysis from a gender perspective

Larsson Smedkvist, Tone January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to contribute with knowledge about mathematics textbooks from a gender perspective. This was done by looking at the degree to which girls, women, boys and men are represented in the textbooks and how they were presented by looking at the names and activities they were attributed. Content analysis has been performed on a total of 629 pages divided into 18 chapters from the teaching aid series Alfa Beta Gamma Matematik, Matte Direkt Borgen and Eldorado Matte. All series are used in compulsory school grades 4, 5 and 6.  Previous research shows that men are overrepresented in textbooks. This study shows significant differences (p<0.05) in the distribution between male and female characters in both the textbooks' image- and text content, to the advantage of male gender. The most common character in the textbooks' texts and pictures were boys, the least common were women. This study also shows that men more often than women are assigned professional roles and that characters of the male sex more often performed sports activities than characters of the female sex. Male gender is also attributed more professional roles, as well as more sports activities than female gender.

Challenges for Aid-personnel in their work with Gender Equality : A qualitative interview study with personnel from Act Church of Sweden regarding their experiences when working with gender equality and women’s rights

Linusson, Emelia, Krämer, Felicia January 2024 (has links)
Gender equality and women's rights have long been a prioritised topic for Swedish aid agencies. In this thesis the aim is through qualitative interviews with employees at the Swedish aid organisation Act Church of Sweden, to unravel some of the challenges met when working with this issue. The respondents all worked at the office in Uppsala or with the office in Uppsala, but tightly with partner organisations. Act Church of Sweden works together with partner organisations in every part of the world with different topics, gender equality being one of them. The results of the interviews showed a wide range of challenges related to a local level at the partner organisations, but also at a global level with patriarchal structures and gender backlash, as well as at the organisational level with administration, resources and funding. Unique were aso the faith-based challenges highlighted by the respondents. The results were discussed together with two theories; Intersectional Feminist Theory and Jack Donnelly’s Universality of Human Rights.

Sports Fans Newsstand : Illustrated Stories of Title IX and the Fight for Gender Equality in Sports

Baker, Lindsay January 2024 (has links)
My Masters project is a visual exploration of otherwise unrecorded girls' and women's sports stories from the pre-Title IX era. Title IX is an American piece of legislation that was signed into law in 1972. It states that any institution receiving federal funding cannot discriminate based on sex. This law would help to expand girls’ and women’s opportunities and participation in sports, although gender equality in American school athletics has yet to be achieved. The visual outcome of my project took the form of the Sports Fans Newsstand which housed a variety of ephemera such as comics, newspapers, sports trading cards, posters and pins--each element adding a new entry point to these complex stories.

Does digital divide or unite? The impact of mobile apps on Mexican small-scale fisheries.

Ahmed, Tamhida January 2024 (has links)
Small-scale fisheries in low and middle-income countries lag significantly behind in access to trustworthy, consistent, and easily available fisheries data. Empirical studies on the effectiveness of mobile apps for transparent data sharing to address gender disparities and women's engagement in small-scale fisheries remain limited. Data is important because it identifies the reporting source, facilitates the evaluation of fishing activities, and ensures accountability within the fishing sector. This study examines the potential of mobile apps for increasing the visibility of women's contributions to small-scale fisheries using Mexico as a case study. Current research on the role of apps in promoting equitable and sustainable fisheries is insufficient, as it lacks detailed information on who is reporting the data and its impact on the fishing sector. The primary method for this study is Q-methodology, a participatory mixed-methods approach appropriate for extracting patterns of opinions held in common within a group. Ten representative fishers from different communities and villages in Mexico participated in the study, and the analysis highlighted two key perspectives. First, mobile apps facilitate increased visibility of women within the fishing community, promoting collaboration and partnership between male and female fishers; this builds a sense of trust and group identity within the community, leading to stronger collective action. Second, collective action in the community leads to male fishers entrusting women with more fishing tasks like reporting catch data on their behalf– a task traditionally performed only by male fishers. This results in women using mobile apps to take a more active role in reporting both community solutions and catch data which leads to increased compliance to marine reserves in the fishing community. The findings are important because the study explores the potential of technology, specifically mobile apps, in recognizing women's transformative roles in reporting fishing data for equitable and sustainable small-scale fisheries.

Význam genderového auditu při prosazování rovných příležitostí pro ženy a muže: případová studie společnosti Česká spořitelna, a.s. / The significance of gender audit by asserting equal opportunities for women and men: the Česká spořitelna, a.s. company case study

Čechová, Miroslava January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is a case study of Česká spořitelna, a. s. It shows the significance of gender audit by asserting equal opportunities for women and men. The theoretical part introduces how gender equality could be asserted and also summarizes how the concept has (not) been practically fulfilled (particularly in the area of labour market). It emphasizes the gender audit as one of the possible tools of change when asserting the gender equality. The empirical part of this dissertation is investigating the significance of gender audit for asserting the equal opportunities in Česká spořitelna, a. s. Therefore it analyzes a final report of the first gender audit and compares its design with another final report that came out of the second implemented gender audit. It also analyzes the processes the company adopted after the first gender audit to promote the equal opportunities for women and men. The impacts and the efficiency of the measures (either proposed or implemented) are analyzed critically with regard to their influence on the gender equality.

Women in mining : a conceptual framework for gender issues in the South African mining sector / Dorothea Botha

Botha, Dorothea January 2013 (has links)
The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (28 of 2002) (MPRDA) and the accompanied Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter aimed to rectify previous inequalities and disadvantages in the mining sector and specifically provide for the inclusion of women in core mining activities. According to the Act and the Charter, the mining industry was supposed to reach a quota of 10% women in core mining activities by 2009. The amendment of the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining and Minerals Industry (launched in 2010) set further requirements in terms of employment equity targets; the Charter requires a 40% historically disadvantaged South African representation in core and critical skills by 2015. Although well intended, the establishment of gender equality in the male-dominant mining sector remains one of the biggest equity challenges in the country and numerous problems accompany the deployment of women in core mining activities. Against this background, the main objective of the study was to critically analyse gender issues in the mining sector and to subsequently develop a conceptual framework that will enable the mining sector to contribute to and ensure the sustainable employment of women in the mining sector. A literature review was done, firstly to provide an understanding of persistent inequalities in society and the workplace, and secondly to gain an in-depth understanding of the variables that have an impact on women in the world of work in general and in the mining sector specifically. An empirical study was conducted to determine and investigate relevant gender-related issues in the mining sector. Quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and direct observation) research paradigms were used. From the literature review as well as the empirical study, it is evident that the deployment of women in core positions is still accompanied by various challenges, not only for managers but also for male co-workers as well as the women themselves. Although the numbers of women in the South African mining industry have risen, there is still a long way to go to successfully and sustainably ensure women‟s participation in the industry. Through the literature study and the empirical research, it became clear that various factors need to be considered for the successful and sustainable deployment of women in the mining sector. The study concludes by making recommendations and offering a conceptual framework, with the main pillars being company policies, workplace opportunities, infrastructure facilities, physical ability, health and safety and workplace relations. This framework can be implemented and used by various stakeholders in the mining sector to contribute to the successful and sustainable deployment of women in the mining sector. / PhD (Sociology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Samkönad tvåsamhet : vardagsliv och heteronormativa praktiker / Same sex couples : Everyday life and heteronormative practice

Norberg, Anna January 2009 (has links)
This study explores how same sex couples in Sweden, a country with strong gender equality policies and discourses understand their lives and relationships. Central to the study is the analysis of the tensions between a public discourse favoring openness for lesbians, gays, and bisexuals and a lack of acknowledgment of non-heterosexual family practices; as well as the tensions between gender equality policies and discourses and the specific construction of same sex couples. The study is grounded in a feminist and queer perspective and inspired by narrative analysis. Furthermore, it uses an intersectional perspective in which different axes of power are seen as mutually constituted. Interviews were conducted with same sex couples, both individually and together, in which the following topics were addressed: intimacy, division of household labor, domestic decision-making, conflict resolution, and the social context in which the couples live. One part of the study analyzes the economic foundations upon which the couples live and how income and possessions are organized within their relationship. This study shows that income and status are key questions for studying equality within same sex couples. The analysis is concerned with the tensions generated by the partners' class position as well as the negotiations which occur between the couple. It becomes apparent that the equality as an ideal is difficult to attain in practice. Even same sex partners are forced to relate to household labor as gendered practices. The interviewees describe their couple relationship and everyday life within heteronormative discourses. Through their stories, the interviewed couples give a view of the way in which everyday experiences of heteronormative confrontations affect the construction of their relationship. This study also indicates that same sex couples are neither more equal nor less conflict laden than heterosexual couples, even if they position themselves in relation to heterosexual couples as anti-role models. When the interviewees position themselves in relation to heterosexual couples they simultaneously embody the ideal of the gender equality discourse and the norms of being an ideal couple.
