Kvinnor i politiken i Mauritius : Konsekvenser av ökad kvinnorepresentation / Women in Mauritian Politics : Consequences of Women’s Increased Representation

Bihel, Jasmina, Fathoni, Khatimah January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to understand and analyse councillors’ view on women in Mauritian politics. This thesis focuses on their experiences after the implementation of gender quota in local government which led to an increased women’s representation in local politics as well as the consequences derived from it. The empirical material for this thesis has been gathered through qualitative interviews with male and female councillors from three municipalities in Mauritius. The theoretical framework is divided into three parts which are used to analyse different points from the empirical material. In the theoretical framework we have included theories about the ways to increase women’s representation, why women should be active in politics, and about gender quota. To analyse the empirics from a theoretical point of view, we have divided the results into three sub-categories which are the respondents’ stance to gender quota and women’s representation in politics, the theory of critical mass and the change in political agenda, as well as the councillors’ attitudes towards female politicians. The results from this thesis show that the notion that politics is solely a male domain has begun to change. The increased women’s representation has shown that women are as competent as men in the political field. However, the results do not show a notable change in the political agenda, because not enough time has passed to see any differences. Women in Mauritius are today more accepted to partake in politics but there is still a long way to go for them to be considered equal members as men in the political world.

Snedrekrytering och mansdominans som organisationskulturellt fenomen

Sjögren, Fredrik, Sällvik, Fredrik January 2007 (has links)

The purpose of this paper is to present a possible understanding of why the company Tekola is segregated according to sex. In accordance to this purpose, an understanding of how the segregation affects the employees in relation to power, values and possibilities is discussed. The theoretical understanding is that the organization of men and women within Tekola is done in close connection to creation of the meaning of gender in Tekola. This, in turn, affects and is affected by the recruitment to and within the company. Through the study of statistics from a survey, five interviews with employees and former employees and Tekolas’ equality plan, we are able to see the possible existence of a glass ceiling, and a culture of homosociality, which affects the possibilities of women to enter the company and also to gain full entrance to power-positions in a negative way. There is also a possibility that sexual harassment exists in Tekola. There is a clear feminization of one of the departments, a phenomenon that affects acts directed at and around that department. Also, we are able to see that there is a gap between the actual segregation between men and women in Tekola, and the employees’ perception of their possibilities.
/

Ji Sor (1997): Self-Realization of Women in Cinema and in History

Lin, Tong (Hilary) 01 January 2017 (has links)
100 years ago, there was a group of women called Zishunu who stood up against the whole society and swore off marriage for life. Zishu offered an escape for many women in the Pearl River Delta area. As forerunners in female independence and liberation, Zishunu never had the chance to be the spokesman of themselves or the recognition they deserved. Ji Sor (1997), a groundbreaking work in lesbian-themed movies, beautifully depicts this special and unparalleled historical phenomenon in detail. Released a few months after the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997, this critically acclaimed movie by Hong Kong New Wave filmmaker Jacob Cheung embodies the three biggest fears of an extremely conservative society: absence of marriage, challenges to male hegemony, and homosexuality. Although seen as representatives of strong and independent women, Zishunu had to make a lot of compromises to the patriarchal culture to be allowed not to marry. The emancipation of Zishunu, although as a huge advancement in the feminism in China, is not a complete liberation. Women emancipation cannot be achieved by women celibacy. A hundred years later, we are still asking what gender equality really means, what is women’s power, what is independence, what is feminism? Through the analyses of Zishu and Ji Sor both individually and together, this thesis explores the meanings of gender equalities and sexual identities mean in the cinematic world and in the real world. There shouldn’t be a set of standards of how women should act. The right that a woman should have, just like a real women’s movie, is the autonomy to make her own decisions.

In preschool: ”How fun that a man works here”

Petterson, Amanda, Zairovic, Eleonora January 2017 (has links)
This study examines the gender segregation among preschool teachers in Borås stad. Earlier research shows that the discussion about male pre-school teacher has been going on for several years but there is still no big development in the issue. The profession is still regarded as typical “women's work” and that the pre-school teacher profession need more highlighting to get attention among men. The gender segregation in the labour market can cause economic problems. Also the children only get to meet women during their time in preschool. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Borås stad work to reduce the gender segregation in preschools and to discover why some men choses to become preschool teachers. The material and information used in this study has been gathered through qualitative, semi structured interviews. The result of the study shows that the interviewed male preschool teachers think that the reason for the issue is that the profession is still considered to typical work for females. However the preschool teachers feel welcomed and appreciated by their colleagues and the parents of the children. Another contributing reason to the problem is the ongoing debate about sexual abuse in preschools. Also advertisement for the profession is lacking and seen as another reason for the problem according to the results. Furthermore, the result shows the perception that all male preschool teachers are pedofiles is need to change in order to get more males working in preschool in the future. The result also shows the Borås stad does not have a clear strategy to get more men to work in preschools. The appreciation of the profession needs to change in order for men to be fully accepted as preschool teachers by society.

Fighting Gender Norms : Gender Equality, Masculinity, and the Dynamics of Violence in Conflict

Kataja, Mikael January 2017 (has links)
Gender equality is an emerging field in conflict studies, but so far research has mainly focused on the onset of conflict. However, strong correlations between low levels of gender equality and the risk for conflict has been found, which gives encouragement for further research. Other fields have explored the field of gender equality more extensively, and has for example found relationships between attitudes towards gender equality and the prevalence of violence in personal relationships. Building on those findings, this thesis attempts to advance the field of gender equality in conflict studies by examining how attitudes towards gender equality affects the dynamics of violence during conflicts, with the hypothesised relationship that more positive attitudes towards gender equality results in lower levels of violence. This is done through a statistical study of 172 selected cases from different regions and with different ideologies. The suggested mechanism for this relationship is that of traditional gender norms, and in particular traditional ideals of masculinity which are closely associated with violence. While not lending strong support for the all the hypothesised relationship, the results gives some reason for optimism for future research.

Atlet eller kvinna? : En kritisk diskursanalys om kvinnliga atleters framställning i en av Sveriges största nyhetstidningar / “A woman or an athlete?” : A critical discourse analysis on the representation of female athletes in one of Sweden’s biggest newspaper

Kasto, Gabriella, Mårdén, Kristoffer January 2016 (has links)
The focus of this study lies on medias representation of male and female athletes in sports journalism. The research has been conducted on one of Sweden’s biggest newspaper, Aftonbladet. This study has, from a gender perspective, critically analysed Aftonbladets news coverage of the summer Olympic games of 2016. The purpose of this study is to examine how female athletes is portrayed in sports journalism in comparison with male athletes, and to see if a hegemony masculinity shows in the news coverage. To carry this study into effect we chose to use critical discourse analysis as both method and theory. To complement CDA as a theory we also base our analysis in the theory of gender, stereotypes and hegemony masculinity theory. This study is based on five analytic tools that was recovered from Carvalhos step-by-step model for a critical discourse analysis. This makes it possible for a critical qualitative analysis of the text and the depiction of male and female athletes. The model makes it possible to examine the chronicles use of linguistic, as the content of the text is broken down thoroughly and deeply analysed. In comparison to earlier studies, our results shows that there is a change in the discourse. The female athletes in the study are not described by negative stereotypes. The focus of the female athletes does not lie on them as social actors, instead they are described by their actions as athletes. From a gender perspective the female and male athletes are represented equally. There is no showing of a hegemony masculinity in the news reporting.

La genèse du racial-féminisme. Race, classe et genre autour de Pia Sophie Rogge-Börner / The Genesis of Racial-Feminism. Race, Class and Gender in the work of Pia Sophie Rogge-Börner

Meyer, Jennifer 19 September 2014 (has links)
Taking on the extensive debate on intersectionality, this doctoral thesis examines the interlocking of the categories race, class and gender as well as the articulation of feminism, anti-Semitism and racism in the writings of Sophie Rogge-Börner (1878-1955). Firstly, this project exposes the mechanisms of racialization of the power relations between the sexes which were at work in the production of an equivalence between the Nordic “race” and gender equality as well as in the ascribing of a “Jewish” character to patriarchy. The thesis then describes Rogge-Börner’s explanation for the advent of male domination as a result of racial mixing and degeneration and confronts it with her assertion of the constructed character of sexual difference. Furthermore, the project analyses the concrete demands of a discourse which presents female emancipation as a potential limited by racial origin as well as the condition for racial regeneration. The thesis shows that the reference to ahistorical and essentialist categories could be the basis for an egalitarian but non-universalist understanding of feminism. Finally, the project looks at the persistence of these ideas within the New Right. In consciously avoiding a normative definition of feminism, this thesis shows how a political emancipatory movement, on the one hand, produced new exclusions and hierarchies among women and, on the other hand, provided new arguments to the racial and anti-Semitic discourse during the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. The thesis thus brings to light a specific intricacy of racial and sexual dominance.

An ambition for development : the gender perspective, the sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Swedish overseas development assistance : strategies, policies and programs (1994-2014)

Rabier, Serge 13 November 2015 (has links)
For the last twenty years, Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Development issues have been at the heart of a growing trend of interest from both development thinkers and practitioners, researchers, international and national institutions, non governmental organisations, and experts from development agencies. Sweden has played a key role in the evolution of this global agenda. Among the major Overseas Development Assistance contributors, Sweden has proven to be one of the "like-minded" countries, which has integrated the gender perspective and the rights perspective at the very heart of its ODA mechanisms. The cycle of 1990's UN conferences, which has promoted gender equality as both a condition and a mean to achieve a sustainable human development was the occasion for Sweden to take a clear leadership as an influential "soft power". The analysis of decisive factors in the Swedish history (cultural, political and social references) as well as a critical reading of founding documents since 1994 (political statements, bills and laws, strategic/planning and communication papers, program evaluations) shows the original contribution of Swedish ODA, which beyond its remarkable amount, reveals the anthropological and political fundamentals of development and recalls that globalisation should not ignore the growing demands around inequalities, in particular gender inequalities.

Jämställdhet i bolagsstyrelser – Framtidens vinnare? : En studie om faktorer som påverkar den genomsnittliga könsfördelningen i styrelser bland bolag på Stockholmsbörsen / Gender equality among board of directors – The future winners?

Eriksson, Alice, Karlsson, Hjalmar January 2019 (has links)
Problem discussion: A question that is frequently discussed is the gender equality among board of directors in listed companies and how companies actively try to increase the average share of women. The newly listed and unlisted companies on Nasdaq’s Stockholm Exchange affects the total average share of women but the actual effect has never been analyzed before. The difference in gender allocation between independent and owner dependent board of directors in newly listed and unlisted companies are unexplored. The effect of these two categories of board of directors, the origin of the development in gender equality among the board of directors and what effects that can increase the gender equality are interesting to research. By analyzing these aspects, the study can contribute with valuable knowledge for the future development of more gender equal boards. Purpose: By researching the board of directors gender in the newly listed and unlisted companies on Nasdaq’s Stockholm Exchange the result can be compared to the gender of the existing board of directors. The study also analyzes the background to the average gender equality among the board of directors as well as potential recommendations to increase the average. Methodology: A mixed methods research has been used in order to fulfill the study’s purpose. This means that a mix of a quantative and a qualitative study has been used to collect data. The study has an abdutive approach as well as three different designs in order to accomplish the study’s purpose. Eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted to complement the data of the average gender equality among the board of directors gathered from the inflow and outflow of companies Nasdaq’s Stockholm Exchange. Conclusion: The study concludes that the newly listed and unlisted companies decrease the total average share of women on Nasdaq’s Stockholm Exchange, also the newly listed companies’ owner dependent directors is under represented among women. The majority share holders’ influence on the combination of board members is high and there are very few women who own and start listed companies which partly explains the underlying reason why the average gender equality is what it is today.
