The advent of social media has provided an arena where barriers to entry are low. Individuals may persuade, question others and defend both their philosophies and their actions. This study examines the classic role of rhetorical criticism as it may apply in new media venues. A blog written by a public figure was examined through a synthesis of rhetorical criticism analyses derived from Ware and Linkugel, Vartabedian, and Downey. Four strategies and associated positioning in the practice of apologia were identified in selected blog posts, indicating the genre of apologia applies to social media apologies and extends the genre of apologia. Rhetorical criticism was found to be an effective tool in identifying rhetorical postures and strategies used in social media.

Monomorphization and dynamic dispatch are two common techniques for implementing polymorphism in statically typed programming languages. Function templates in C++ use the former technique to enable algorithms written as generic functions to be efficiently reused with multiple different data types by producing a separate function instantiation for each invocation that uses a unique permutation of argument types. This avoids the overhead of indirection associated with dynamic dispatch and allows the generated code of each instantiation to be optimized by the compiler for its specific concrete types, which typically yields great improvements in runtime performance over any dynamic approach. The disadvantage of this implementation, compared to the type-erased generics found in many other programming languages, is that careless over-use of templates with many different argument types can lead to an excessive amount of redundant code being generated for the same function. This increase in code size may increase the binary size of the final program and reduce the amount of useful code that can fit into the processor's instruction cache during execution, reducing code locality and thereby potentially reducing performance. Monomorphization can also increase compilation time due to the increase in generated code that needs to be compiled and optimized. This thesis presents a heuristic-based approach to generic programming that allows function templates to be automatically converted to use dynamic dispatch in scenarios where the resulting negative impact on runtime performance is predicted to be low. The thesis project includes the development of a proof of concept plugin for the Clang compiler frontend that can be used to compile existing C++ projects with the conversions applied. The design of a heuristic function for determining whether a given function template should use monomorphization or dynamic dispatch based on statically known metrics is proposed based on the results of an experiment. This heuristic is shown to achieve a small general improvement in program size across a set of open-source C++ projects when they are compiled using the plugin. The key findings from the experiment and from the development of the plugin are summarized with a general strategy for how the approach can be integrated into the design of future programming languages to promote more extensive use of generic programming in performance-sensitive code while avoiding regressions in program size and compilation time.

Most of today’s microwave circuits are designed for specific function and specialneed. There is a growing trend to have flexible and reconfigurable circuits. Circuitsthat can be digitally programmed to achieve various functions based on specific needs. Realization of high frequency circuit blocks that can be dynamically reconfigured toachieve the desired performance seems to be challenging. However, with recentadvances in many areas of technology these demands can now be met. Two concepts have been investigated in this thesis. The initial part presents thefeasibility of a flexible and programmable circuit (PROMFA) that can be utilized formultifunctional systems operating at microwave frequencies. Design details andPROMFA implementation is presented. This concept is based on an array of genericcells, which consists of a matrix of analog building blocks that can be dynamicallyreconfigured. Either each matrix element can be programmed independently or severalelements can be programmed collectively to achieve a specific function. The PROMFA circuit can therefore realize more complex functions, such as filters oroscillators. Realization of a flexible RF circuit based on generic cells is a new concept.In order to validate the idea, a test chip has been fabricated in a 0.2μm GaAs process, ED02AH from OMMICTM. Simulated and measured results are presented along withsome key applications like implementation of a widely tunable band pass filter and anactive corporate feed network. The later part of the thesis covers the design and implementation of tunable andwideband highly linear LNAs that can be very useful for multistandard terminals suchas software defined radio (SDR). One of the key components in the design of a flexibleradio is low noise amplifier (LNA). Considering a multimode and multiband radiofront end, the LNA must provide adequate performance within a large frequency band.Optimization of LNA performance for a single frequency band is not suitable for thisapplication. There are two possible solutions for multiband and multimode radio frontends (a) Narrowband tunable LNAs (b) Wideband highly linear LNAs. A dual bandtunable LNA MMIC has been fabricated in 0.2μm GaAs process. A self tuningtechnique has also been proposed for the optimization of this LNA. This thesis alsopresents the design of a novel highly linear current mode LNA that can be used forwideband RF front ends for multistandard applications. Technology process for thiscircuit is 90nm CMOS.

The rapid increase in the demand on fresh water due the increase in the world population and scarcity of natural water puts more stress on the desalination industrial sector to install more desalination plants around the world. Among these desalination plants, multistage flash desalination process (MSF) is considered to be the most reliable technique of producing potable water from saline water. In recent years, however, the MSF process is confronting many problems to cut off the cost and increase its performance. Among these problems are the non-condensable gases (NCGs) and the accumulation of fouling which they work as heat insulation materials. As a result, the MSF pumps and the heat transfer equipment are overdesigned and consequently increase the capital cost and decrease the performance of the plants. Moreover, improved process control is a cost effective approach to energy conservation and increased process profitability. Thus, this study is motivated by the real absence of detailed kinetic fouling model and implementation of advance process control (APC). To accomplish the above tasks, commercial modelling tools can be utilized to model and simulate MSF process taking into account the NCGs and fouling effect, and optimum control strategy. In this research, gPROMS (general PROcess Modeling System) model builder has been used to develop the MSF process model. First, a dynamic mathematical model of MSF is developed based on the basic laws of mass balance, energy balance and heat transfer. Physical and thermodynamic properties of brine, distillate and water vapour are included to support the model. The model simulation results are validated against actual plant data published in the literature and good agreement with these data is obtained. Second, the design of venting system in MSF plant and the effect of NCGs on the overall heat transfer coefficient (OHTC) are studied. The release rate of NCGs is studied using Henry’s law and the locations of venting points are optimised. The results reveal that high concentration of NCGs heavily affects the OHTC. Furthermore, advance control strategy namely: generic model control (GMC) is designed and introduced to the MSF process to control and track the set points of the two most important variables in the MSF plant; namely the Top Brine Temperature (TBT) which is the output temperature of the brine heater and the Brine Level (BL) in the last stage. The results are compared to conventional Proportional Integral Derivative Controller (PID) and show that GMC controller provides better performance over conventional PID controller to handle a nonlinear system. In addition, a new control strategy called hybrid Fuzzy-GMC is developed and implemented to control the same aforementioned loops. Its results reveal that the new control outperforms the pure GMC in some areas. Finally, a dynamic fouling model is developed and incorporated into the MSF dynamic process model to predict fouling at high temperature and high velocity. The proposed dynamic model considers the attachment and removal mechanisms of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide with more relaxation of the assumptions. Since the MSF plant stages work as a series of heat exchangers, there is a continuous change of temperature, heat flux and salinity of the seawater. The proposed model predicts the behaviour of fouling based on the physical and thermal conditions of every single stage of the plant.

One of the tools used during re-engineering of an environment is the process model as modelling
tool. The identification of process models within an institution is a difficult and tedious task. A problem is that often process model structures is identified for one specific project and not stored for future reuse. The ideal for institutions is to reuse process model structures within the institution. This study focused on the generic structures within the higher education application domain where the hypothesis for this study was that a generic educational process model structure for higher education institutions can be established; a process management flow procedure can be used to manage the flow within an educational process model; and that aneducational process model can be stored and reused in re-engineering efforts.
The study was divided into three research questions, where the first focused on the identification of generic process model structures, the second on the usability of the process model structures within a re-engineering effort, and the last on the preservation of a process model structure. For the first research question, the identification of process model structures, three institutions were used for data collection. It was necessary to develop a requirements elicitation procedure for data collection. The structure derived was confirmed at a fourth institution. For the second research question, which focuses on the usability of process model structures, an ordinal measurement was defined to measure the usefulness of the process model structures in a reengineering
effort. A re-engineering procedure was developed for re-engineering the application domain, called the process management flow procedure, and used for a re-engineering effort at
one institution. Lastly, for the third research question the preservation of the process model
structures, the abstraction of the process model structure was investigated as well as the
feasibility of implementing the process model structures physically using existing repository
software.
The conclusion after the investigation of the three research questions was that the hypothesis

management curriculum at The International Hotel School contributes to students’
preparedness from their own perspectives.
Generic and curriculum specific skills that can be used for curriculum evaluation were
identified, a framework of curriculum variables to rate the level of student
preparedness was developed, the effectiveness of the hospitality management
curriculum from the perspectives of students’ perceptions of preparedness was
analysed, and the aspects that contribute most to student preparedness were
identified through a literature study and an empirical investigation.
The findings were summarised and it was recommended that The International Hotel
School needs to review the hotel and restaurant accounting course and the
experiential learning components. Furthermore, lecturers of The International Hotel
School should receive training on the implementation of more interactive course

systems, as well as the theory, architecture and behaviour of the SQL-Tutor sets the context for this
study. The characteristics and criteria for evaluating computer-aided instruction (CAl) systems are
considered as a background to an in-depth investigation of the characteristics and criteria
appropriate for evaluating ITSs. These criteria are categorised along internal and external
dimensions with the internal dimension focusing on the intrinsic features and behavioural aspects
of ITSs, and the external dimension focusing on its educational impact. Several issues surrounding
the evaluation of ITSs namely, approaches, methods, techniques and principles are examined, and
integrated within a framework for assessing the added value of ITS technology for instructional
