Designing supplementary space in multi-family housingMoshaver, Sam 08 1900 (has links)
Demographics and lifestyles have changed considerably in the past few decades. These changes are bound to influence the design of housing and they notably include a series of emerging needs: additional spatial needs due to additional activities brought to the traditional housing premises. Planning for those emerging needs is the main theme of this thesis. In a typical single-family detached house, the basement is available to accommodate the spatial requirements for these emerging needs. However, such a provision does not typically exist in multi-family housing.
This thesis proposes a specific additional space to accommodate these emerging needs: the supplementary space. Although such a space has not been explored in the literature, there are precedents for its application in multi-family floor planning. The objective of this study is to provide guidelines for the design and the integration of this supplementary space. It relies on the systems approach as the design-decision methodology due to its logic of deducting the solution from the analysis of the objective.
Applying the systems approach means that all the criteria corresponding to the specific purpose of the supplementary space will be extrapolated from the objective. However, once the supplementary space is being used to deal with emerging needs, it will then introduce its own relevant criteria. This study will start with the criteria for designing a home office because this is the most demanding emerging needs activity. The criteria are organized as vectors of a generic model indicating how the supplementary space can be formulated. The model will target the workplace at home and subsequently offer solutions to them. This study focuses on the planning provisions dealing mainly with visual and spatial privacy. The overall outcome of the model is to suggest guidelines to incorporate the supplementary space within multi-family residential buildings, a feature not offered in traditional planning.
The concept of adaptability is the key design strategy to accommodate change in architecture and housing, even more in the case of a supplementary space. Therefore, the supplementary space model will apply the concept of adaptability through the Open Building (OB) approach; elaborating more on the practical design and construction features. Different OB applications, such as the NEXT21 project and the KSI (Kikou Support and Infill) protocol in Japan, are examples that can be used as efficient guidelines to design a supplementary space.
The feasibility of the supplementary space model can be validated and served in the real world. Industrialized building systems are capable of accommodating change without demolition as their dry mechanical joints are generally at meeting the DfD (design for disassembly) standards, not only for the supplementary space but also for the whole dwelling unit.

L'exemplarité de la fiction dans le roman espagnol contemporain / The exemplarity of the fiction in the contemporary Spanish novelFauquet, Isabelle 03 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis analyses how the contemporary Spanish fiction revives the tradition of literary exemplarity, through the study of seven novels published at the turn of the XXth and the XXIst centuries (1998-2004). This work tries to underline the evolution of the exemplarity notion in both diachronic and synchronic perspectives, and the study of the current analytical paradigm focused on the individual. The new forms of exemplarity in contemporary literature are considered through the reactivation of its traditional shape —the hero— but also with the new possibilities given by the questioning of boundaries between genre and the ambivalence of the reading pact. In a world devoid of ideological consensus, the authors of the corpus shape their own frames of understanding. Rather than a universal moral, they suggest subjective ethical answers that can be shared by the reader. The exemplarity, in its actual forms, produces new types of commitment that are based on an ethic inseparable from literary creation.

Variační metody v termomechanice kontinua pevné fáze / Variational Methods in Thermomechanics of SolidsPelech, Petr January 2020 (has links)
The thesis is devoted to study of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics and the related mathematical analysis. It consists of four self-contained chapters dealing with different aspects. The first chapter focuses on peridynamics, a non-local theory of continuum mechanics, and its relation to conventional local theory of Cauchy-Green elasticity. Similar compar- isons has been used for proving consistency and for determining some of the material coefficients in peridynamics, provided the material parameters in the local theory are known. In this chapter the formula for the non-local force-flux is computed in terms of the peridynamic interaction, relating the fundamental concepts of these two theories and establishing hence a new connection, not present in the previous works. The second and third chapters are both devoted to Rate-Independent Systems (RIS) and their applications to continuum mechanics. RIS represents a suitable approximation when the internal, viscous, and thermal effects can be neglected. RIS has been proven to be useful in modeling hysteresis, phase transitions in solids, elastoplasticity, damage, or fracture in both small and large strain regimes. In the second chapter the existence of solutions to an evolutionary rate-independ- ent model of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) is proven. The model...

Advanced EM/Power Side-Channel Attacks and Low-overhead Circuit-level CountermeasuresDebayan Das (11178318) 27 July 2021 (has links)
<div>The huge gamut of today’s internet-connected embedded devices has led to increasing concerns regarding the security and confidentiality of data. To address these requirements, most embedded devices employ cryptographic algorithms, which are computationally secure. Despite such mathematical guarantees, as these algorithms are implemented on a physical platform, they leak critical information in the form of power consumption, electromagnetic (EM) radiation, timing, cache hits and misses, and so on, leading to side-channel analysis (SCA) attacks. Non-profiled SCA attacks like differential/correlational power/EM analysis (DPA/CPA/DEMA/CEMA) are direct attacks on a single device to extract the secret key of an encryption algorithm. On the other hand, profiled attacks comprise of building an offline template (model) using an identical device and the attack is performed on a similar device with much fewer traces.</div><div><br></div><div>This thesis focusses on developing efficient side-channel attacks and circuit-level low-overhead generic countermeasures. A cross-device deep learning-based profiling power side-channel attack (X-DeepSCA) is proposed which can break the secret key of an AES-128 encryption engine running on an Atmel microcontroller using just a single power trace, thereby increasing the threat surface of embedded devices significantly. Despite all these advancements, most works till date, both attacks as well as countermeasures, treat the crypto engine as a black box, and hence most protection techniques incur high power/area overheads.</div><div><br></div><div>This work presents the first white-box modeling of the EM leakage from a crypto hardware, leading to the understanding that the critical correlated current signature should not be passed through the higher metal layers. To achieve this goal, a signature attenuation hardware (SAH) is utilized, embedding the crypto core locally within the lower metal layers so that the critical correlated current signature is not passed through the higher metals, which behave as efficient antennas and its radiation can be picked up by a nearby attacker. Combination of the 2 techniques – current-domain signature suppression and local lower metal routing shows >350x signature attenuation in measurements on our fabricated 65nm test chip, leading to SCA resiliency beyond 1B encryptions, which is a 100x improvement in both EM and power SCA protection over the prior works with comparable overheads. Moreover, this is a generic countermeasure and can be utilized for any crypto core without any performance degradation.</div><div><br></div><div>Next, backed by our physics-level understanding of EM radiation, a digital library cell layout technique is proposed which shows >5x reduction in EM SCA leakage compared to the traditional digital logic gate layout design. Further, exploiting the magneto-quasistatic (MQS) regime of operation for the present-day CMOS circuits, a HFSS-based framework is proposed to develop a pre-silicon EM SCA evaluation technique to test the vulnerability of cryptographic implementations against such attacks during the design phase itself.</div><div><br></div><div>Finally, considering the continuous growth of wearable and implantable devices around a human body, this thesis also analyzes the security of the internet-of-body (IoB) and proposes electro-quasistatic human body communication (EQS-HBC) to form a covert body area network. While the traditional wireless body area network (WBAN) signals can be intercepted even at a distance of 5m, the EQS-HBC signals can be detected only up to 0.15m, which is practically in physical contact with the person. Thus, this pioneering work proposing EQS-HBC promises >30x improvement in private space compared to the traditional WBAN, enhancing physical security. In the long run, EQS-HBC can potentially enable several applications in the domain of connected healthcare, electroceuticals, augmented and virtual reality, and so on. In addition to these physical security guarantees, side-channel secure cryptographic algorithms can be augmented to develop a fully secure EQS-HBC node.</div>

L'oeuvre d'Alfredo Molano : sous le signe de l'hybridation générique / The work of Alfredo Molano : under the sign of the generic hybridizationOsorio Mejía, Jesús David 19 May 2014 (has links)
Alfredo Molano, a contemporary Colombian writer and sociologist, calls into question the concentration of land property and the unequal distribution of wealth. The study of his writing explores three main axes. At first, the transformation of his writing, which advances from a scientific discourse to the journalistic and literary testimony. This distance concerning the scientific objectivism carries away some risk of fictionnalisation. The writer assumes because, according to his point of view, his writing has no effect on the factuality of the stories but it is quite easy to read and to circulate. Then, the writer's technique of the "imputation" has been analysed. The author is really attached to. It consists on the fusion of many witnesses into a single character, who keeps the characteristics of people he was inspired by. Finally, our study of his writing is also focused on generic hybridisation, since the Colombian refers not only to the stories of Life, travel and learning, as well as sentimental texts, action and adventures, but also to the essay, among many others. This confluence reflects the complexity of a feudal and postmodern society, and allows the expression of heterogeneous diversity of witnesses, particularly Amerindians, farmers, political activists, offenders and prisoners. Most of them are victims of the inequalities and the continuous conflict between the hegemonic center and the oppressed periphery, two poles as fuzzy as the violence is palpable, bloody and multiform. Alfredo Molano, like most of his witnesses, does not content himself by the recording of this violence, but he denounces it openly and proposes structural solutions. He turns himself towards the development of a "historical memory", recognizing the suffering of victims and targeting a society not only hybrid, but most of all just and egalitarian.

New Teacher Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention Strategies for the Canton Public School DistrictLuckett, W K, Jr 11 August 2017 (has links)
This investigation focused on identifying model foundational strategies to assist Canton Public School District (CPSD) officials in recruiting new teachers, successfully hiring them, and then retaining them the district. Located within the boundaries of the city of Canton, Mississippi, CSPD is geographically located in the central portion of the state. The district consists of 1 high school, 2 middle schools, 4 elementary schools and Canton Education Services Center. CSPD is continually affected by an ever-increasing teacher shortage because new teachers tend to leave the district after they are hired. More than 50% of new teachers leave their teaching positions in the district’s schools within 5 years. The investigation utilized published literature and other archival data (e.g., scholarly papers presented at conferences) accessible to the public in the form of books, chapters in published books, journal articles, and scholarly papers presented at learned societies and associations. Two research questions guided the investigation. The first research question asked: What does the published literature and related archival data (e.g., available scholarly papers retrievable from sources such as colleges, universities, foundations, conferences, etc.) accessible to the public reveal about recruiting, hiring, and retaining teachers? Overall, the material collected and analyzed yielded abundant information. Much of the available information proved valuable because the material focused attention the “how-to-do-it” aspects of recruiting, hiring, and retaining quality new teachers. The second research question asked: Will information gleamed from an analysis of the published literature and other archival data (e.g., unpublished scholarly papers) lead to the development of foundational strategies for assisting school district officials in recruiting, hiring, and retaining new teachers for CPSD? It was possible to develop a model holding potential for improving teacher recruitment, hiring, and retention at CPSD. The model that was developed features seven foundational strategies that if implemented, hold potential for improving teacher recruitment, hiring, and retention at CPSD. The seven strategies are: (1) identify the vacancy and write the job description, (2) announce and advertise the teacher vacancy, (3) develop a customized application form, (4) paper screening process, (5) interviewing process, (6) salary and benefit package, and (7) induction and mentoring.
