For the present study, we use the electronic game, Minecraft and the RPG GURPS – Basic Set. The study counted on the participation of students who regularly attend the Program of Attention to the Precocious student With Gifted Behavior (PAPCS), in which part of the research data was collected in the form of workshops held during 2017. These activities had the objective to investigate also , the degree of commitment to the task, and the efficiency of the use of the potentialities of the games considered. We present discussions about the relationships between giftedness, creativity and games, aiming at the contribution of these elements to this discussion. We denote, through a bibliographical review, the lack of scientific productions on the subject. As a result, we understand that minecraft, as a support tool for enrichment, can be considered as a promising tool, but still requires more scientific research, while RPG has been perceived as an important stimulating tool for creative actions and commitment to assignment. Although research on gifted students is growing in Brazil, we believe that there is still a lot to be done, especia... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The Case for a Schism: A Commentary on Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius, and Worrell (2011)

McBee, Matthew T., McCoach, D. Betsy, Peters, Scott J., Matthews, Michael S. 01 October 2012 (has links)
Lack of theoretical coherence in the field of gifted education has given rise to multiple attempts at a grand unification, including most recently the work of Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius, and Worrell (2011). The authors argue that the incoherence is an inevitable consequence of the fundamental incompatibility of theoretical and definitional features desired by psychologists and educators. Our field could best progress by splitting into the two related but distinct disciplines of high-ability psychology and advanced academics. Furthermore, the prospective adoption of Subotnik et al.'s eminence framework as an organizational principle for either advanced academics or high-ability psychology is criticized.

Collaboration in Giftedness and Talent Development Research

Makel, Matthew C., Smith, Kendal N., Miller, Erin M., Peters, Scott J., McBee, Matthew T. 01 June 2020 (has links)
Existing research practices in gifted education have many areas for potential improvement so that they can provide useful, generalizable evidence to various stakeholders. In this article, we first review the field’s current research practices and consider the quality and utility of its research findings. Next, we discuss how open science practices increase the transparency of research so readers can more effectively evaluate its validity. Third, we introduce five large-scale collaborative research models that are being used in other fields and discuss how they could be implemented in gifted education research. Finally, we review potential challenges and limitations to implementing collaborative research models in gifted education. We believe greater use of large-scale collaboration will help the field overcome some of its methodological challenges to help provide more precise and accurate information about gifted education.

The Relationship Between Teacher Referral and the Representation of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Students in Gifted Education

Burrell-Aldana, Liza 17 January 2023 (has links)
This study was designed to examine the relationship between teacher referral and the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted education and to identify the factors that influenced teachers' decisions to refer CLD students to gifted services. Studies on the issue of disproportionality in gifted education in the United States have indicated teacher referrals can be a pivotal instrument in the identification of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) gifted students. However, previous research has shown teacher referrals of CLD students to gifted services may be influenced by the teacher's own explicit or implicit stereotypes or beliefs of their students' cultural or linguistic backgrounds. District level data from the 2021 school year were examined through a Pearson's correlation coefficient test and a survey was administered to teachers in three different grade levels to determine whether factors such as assessment scores, parent referral, student behavior, and teachers' prior experience with CLD predicted their decision to refer CLD students for gifted services. The survey included two open-ended questions that provided qualitative data on the traits that teachers most associated with giftedness in CLD students, as well as information on school division resources that teachers find to be most effective in supporting their referral of CLD students. The findings of this study revealed there was a relationship between teacher referral and the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted education. No significant relationship was found between the factors listed in the survey and the teachers' decision to refer CLD students to gifted services. However, the frequency of teachers' responses to the Likert-scale questions in the survey indicated the teachers' strong consideration of assessment scores and prior experience with CLD students when recommending CLD students for gifted education. The implications of the study emphasized the need for structures that support the analysis of data on the role teachers play in the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted education, the assessments used to identify gifted students, and the need for intentional professional development that equips teachers with the skills to recognized exceptionality in CLD students. / Doctor of Education / This study was designed to examine the relationship between teacher referral and the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted education and to identify the factors that influenced teachers' decisions to refer CLD students to gifted services. The disproportionate representation of these students in gifted education has been considered one the most pressing current issues in educational equity. Studies on the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted education have identified that teachers are the first step in the gifted screening process. However, previous research has shown teacher referrals of CLD students to gifted services may be influenced by the teacher's own explicit or implicit stereotypes or beliefs of their students' cultural or linguistic backgrounds. This study examined talented and gifted district level referral data from the 2021 school year. This data consisted of the number of referrals by teachers, parents, and administration to the gifted education program. A point biserial correlation was used to determine if a relationship existed between total teacher referrals and the ethnicity of the students in the reported data. A survey consisting of demographic questions, Likert scale questions, and two open-ended questions was administered to teachers in nine elementary schools to determine whether factors such as assessment scores, parent referral, student behavior, and teachers' prior experience with CLD predicted their decision to refer CLD students for gifted services. The survey included two open-ended questions that provided qualitative data on the traits that teachers most associated with giftedness in CLD students, as well as information on school division resources that teachers find to be most effective in supporting their referral of CLD students. The findings of this correlational study revealed there was a significant negative relationship between teacher referral and the representation of CLD students in gifted education, indicating that moving from the non-CLD student category to the CLD student category of student ethnicity, there was a medium decrease in total teacher referrals. The implications of the study emphasized the need for structures that support the analysis of data on the identification instruments used in the gifted education process, the assessments used to identify CLD gifted students, and the need for targeted professional development that equips teachers with the skills to recognized exceptionality in CLD students.

Särskild begåvning och matematik – Hur yttrar det sig? : Vad uppfattar pedagoger som kännetecken på särskild begåvning och hur kommer det till uttryck? / Giftedness and mathematics – How does it show? : What do educators perceive as traits of giftedness and how does it show?

Andersson, Tobias, Evertsson, David January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to examine what traits educators perceive that the gifted students exhibit and how it shows in mathematics teaching. This is done with hope that more educators will be able to notice their gifted students. The study is based on semi structured interviews with five educators as well as two observations of gifted students. The result shows that some of the traits that educators perceive as signs of giftedness aren’t connected to giftedness. The result also shows that the gifted students utilize their above-average abilities in different ways based on interest for the subject and feelings of motivation. The study implicates that educators need more knowledge about how the traits can be expressed to make sure that more of the unidentified gifted students come to educators’ attention.

Identifiering av särbegåvade elever : Identifiering av generellt särbegåvade elever och särbegåvade elever inom ämnet matematik. / Identification of gifted pupils. : Identification of general gifted pupils and gifted pupils in mathematics.

Halling, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to get the educators view on how they look upon their ability of identifying gifted pupils. If they feel that they have potential to be able to identify these pupils, or if they experience any hinders in their ability to identify them. I have chosen to use a survey to be able to get answers to my questions. The survey is sent to three small municipalities and I chose surveys instead of interviews because I wanted to have a wider distribution and several different kinds of educators answering. The study shows that many of the educators know the meaning of the concept of giftedness, but that they feel that they have lack knowledge on the subject.

Smartare än fröken : En kvalitativ undersökning om synen på särskild begåvning och anpassningar i undervisningen av särskilt begåvade barn på två förskolor / Smarter than the teacher : A qualitative study on the view of giftedness and adaptations in the teaching of gifted children in two preschools

Blåbäck, Therese January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine how adaptations in the teaching of gifted children of two preschools can be understood from the perspective of teachers, parents and children. The intent with the study was also to examine how the teachers worked to follow the curriculum and adapt the teaching, how the children could be affected by being seen as gifted and how the parents experienced the cooperation with the preschool regarding the teaching of their gifted children. Through observations and interviews four themes were discovered – characteristics and to be seen, teacher's knowledge and education on giftedness, working methods and adaptations, and transition from preschool to school. The study’s results showed that the different perspectives differ, both between parents, educators and children, but also between the two preschools and their surrounding culture. The surrounding culture had a larger impact than expected. The analysis, based on Stern’s theory of intersubjectivity and intercultural perspective, also showed the importance of gifted children to be seen as gifted and to interact with other gifted children.
