A Cop, a Thief, and a Priest ...and some bad grammar: An Unruly Un-Love Story and the First Nations Fiction Diction Essay That Goes With It

Jesse Macpherson Unknown Date (has links)
This dissertation is comprised of two distinct but related components. The larger component is a short novel, titled A Cop, a Thief and a Priest. This is the story of three very different men, the woman they all want, her daughter who gets in the way, the secrets they all try to hide, and a few bedtime stories. Plus a Canadian Native or two. And maybe a bomb, as well. This work of fiction is written with a shifting perspective and varying degrees of adherence to the rules of grammar, depending on the narrator and characters in the scene. The story focuses on seriously flawed people in potentially harmful, though ceaselessly humorous, relationships and how they try to choose the best out of the poor options in front of them. In the course of the novel several Native Canadian/First Nations characters appear. Some are characters within the story, and others are cast members of several bedtime stories told by the three primary male characters. As I am not Canadian First Nations, I had concerns over writing dialogue and characterization of Canadian Native characters. In response to these misgivings, the accompanying critical essay component of this dissertation deals with the issue of a non-Native author writing Native characters. The thesis essay explores this question in the fiction of three Canadian authors who are not Canadian First Nations. I examine specifically their use of grammatical errors in the dialogue of their Native characters as a device to present diction as an element of the character’s status, education, gender, age, race or culture. The three authors chosen are W.P Kinsella, Anne Cameron, and Thomas King. These writers use diction variously, and each is scrutinized according to guidelines drawn from writing theory texts, commercial writing guides, and writing practice prescriptions from successful authors. The conclusions are considered in the crafting of my own First Nations characters.

Omezené Restartovací Automaty / Restricted Restarting Automata

Černo, Peter January 2015 (has links)
Restarting automata were introduced as a model for analysis by reduction which is a linguistically motivated method for checking correctness of a sentence. The thesis studies locally restricted models of restarting automata which (to the contrary of general restarting automata) can modify the input tape based only on a limited context. The investigation of such restricted models is easier than in the case of general restarting automata. Moreover, these models are effectively learnable from positive samples of reductions and their instructions are human readable. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Carlos Eduardo Araújo da Silva Carvalho 03 July 2015 (has links)
A historical-grammatical exegesis of the Initiation (Prologue) of the Gospel of John. It begins with an analysis of the historical-critical, semiotic and historical-grammatical methods. This latter one was chosen without neglecting the advances propitiated by the historical-critical method which do not conflict with that method. We proceed to the textual criticism choosing the most expressive variables. A prior translation is elaborated without many refinements prioritizing a literal sense. A literary analysis is made to delimit the text, get to know its structure, its literary sources and the literary role of the pericope. In the quest for the structure of the text, four segments are discovered: the creator logos, the luminous logos, the incarnated logos and the glorious logos. In the literary role of the pericope the inadequateness of the term Prologue is discussed and the term Initiation is proposed. Following, there is the analysis of the redaction where internal and external evidence is discussed related to authorship, factors which can indicate the date of the composition of the text, the place where it was written and recipients. At the end of the redaction analysis, the proposition is posited that the main purpose for the writing of the gospel is for the defense of the faith, which is facing Gnostic and Jewish threats, through the Johanine Christology. In the form analyses the text is a smaller genre within a larger genre, analyzing its possible living places. Within the analysis of traditions the substrata which are behind the terms which can have various origins are discussed: logos, light, getting to know and truth. Then one gets to the heart of the exegesis which corresponds to the analysis of the content. Each one of the four segments discovered in the literary analysis is analyzed. Within each segment, first, a grammatical analysis is done with emphasis on discovering the meaning of each word in the light of the impressions which the evangelist left throughout the Gospel and his living world. Next, an analysis of the broad context is done using the grammatical discoveries and analyzing the historical perspectives. This is followed by analyses of the specific context, in which the text is understood in light of the Jewish and Gnostic problem. After comes the theological analysis which deals with the most important issues of the theology of the prologue in connection with other theological texts of the Scriptures. Finally we have the final translation which aims at making use of the knowledge produced throughout the whole exegesis to produce a translation which comes closest to the message which the author wanted to transmit to his first readers.

This research aims at investigating the different patterns in constructions presenting the word “pois”, taking into account that the description of this element’s behavior, in traditional grammars, is superficial and inadequate. Such constructions are also analyzed under the perspective of grammaticalization in order to verify which constructions are more grammaticalized. The grammaticalization is a tool used in linguistic description through which is possible to infer semantic and categorical changes suffered by an item or a construction. It can be analyzed considering two perspectives: (i) diachronic, that investigates the origin of the grammatical forms, describing all changes that such form has passed; and (ii) synchronic, in which is possible investigate the linguistic applications through the point of view of the language fluid patterns for a specific period of time. It is under this focus that the applications related to “pois” found in the corpora are analyzed. Besides the criteria applied to “pois” in the descriptive linguistic studies of Guimarães (2007), Vogt (1978) and the Carone’s discussion (1991) about coordination and subordination, some syntactic and semantic criteria proposed by Bally (1965) are also utilized in order to achieve the objective of this work. In respect to the grammaticalization’s presuppositions, the Traugott’s proposals (1982), Traugott and Konig (1991) and Sweetser (1990) who focus semantic-pragmatic change, the hypotheses of Heine el al. (1991) and the Hopper’s criteria (1991) are applied with the purpose of verifying the degree of grammaticality of the constructions found in the corpora. Related to the corpora, they are divided taking the degree of formality into account and they are composed of epistolary and oratory texts from the XVI and XX centuries, organized by Barbosa (2008). In this research, it was possible... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

A linguistic analysis of event conceptualisation processes in first and second language discourse : evidence for language-specificity in the temporal discourse organisation of basic and advanced Czech and Hungarian learners of English

Vanek, Norbert January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines conceptual reorganisation in second language learners by comparing event construal patterns in first language (L1) and second language (L2) discourse. Previous research suggests that the way grammatical aspect is encoded in the speaker's L1 can influence how events are conceptualised in their L2 (von Stutterheim & Carroll 2006). Given the lack of consensus regarding partial (Bylund 2011a) versus zero (Schmiedtová et al. 2011) susceptibility to reorganising L1 event construal patterns in L2, the present work contributes to this resonant discussion by investigating the extent to which language-specific grammatical aspectual operators influence message planning (Levelt 1989, Habel & Tappe 1999) in three typologically diverse L1 groups and four L2 groups. More specifically, film verbalisations and picture descriptions by Czech, Hungarian and English native speakers, and Czech and Hungarian learners of English at basic and advanced levels were elicited to test (a) whether crosslinguistic event construal contrasts are attributable to the differences in the grammatical means that are available for encoding temporality in a particular L1; (b) whether learners’ degree of susceptibility to reorganising L1 principles for temporal reference in the target language changes as a function of L2 proficiency; and (c) whether event construal patterns across groups remain unaffected by changes of modality (speech vs. writing) and task type. The main novel feature lies in testing L2 learners’ ability to adjust L1 thinking-for-speaking principles (Slobin 1996) in the target language through a systematic scrutiny of four conceptualisation processes abreast (i.e. event segmentation, information selection, temporal structuring and linearization).

Para uma elaboração de um dicionário bilíngue da terminologia gramatical árabe-português / For an elaboration of an Arabic-Portuguese grammatical terminology bilingual dictionary

Paula da Costa Caffaro 23 April 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates the Arabic grammatical terms that belong to the classes of noun, verb and particle. In order to propose a harmonization of these Arabic terms in Portuguese, we have tried to find equivalent terms in both languages and for this, three different possibilities have been generated: a) direct equivalence, which occurs when the terminological definition characteristics of the Arabic and Portuguese grammatical terms were coincidental; b) very nearly equivalence, that happens when not every characteristics were coincidental, in this case, we have investigated the description of use of more than one Portuguese grammatical term as an attempt to find a most appropriate equivalent to the Arabic term; c) non-equivalence, when a Portuguese equivalent has not been verified for the Arabic grammatical term, so we propose a terminological neologism or a paraphrase. The aim of this research is to set up the theoretical and methodological basis for the elaboration of an Arabic grammatical terms bilingual dictionary (Arabic- Portuguese). We have presented 15 test terms, in order to exemplify the outlined methodological procedures, up to the final entry writing, which would be responsible for composing the macrostructure of the mentioned dictionary. Nine of the new analyzed terms belong to the category of noun and three of them are related to the particle. As the verb class has been studied in Master Degree (CAFFARO, 2013), we have selected just three terms to illustrate the objectives presented in this thesis, similarly, we have written the final entry to the selected terms.
