Neutronics and thermal-hydraulics coupling : some contributions toward an improved methodology to simulate the initiating phase of a severe accident in a sodium fast reactor / Couplage neutronique-thermohydraulique pour l'étude de la phase primaire d'un réacteur à neutrons rapides refroidi au Sodium

Guyot, Maxime 28 October 2014 (has links)
This project is dedicated to the analysis and the quantification of bias corresponding to the computational methodology for simulating the initiating phase of severe accidents on Sodium Fast Reactors. A deterministic approach is carried out to assess the consequences of a severe accident by adopting best estimate design evaluations. An objective of this deterministic approach is to provide guidance to mitigate severe accident developments and recriticalities through the implementation of adequate design measures. These studies are generally based on modern simulation techniques to test and verify a given design. The new approach developed in this project aims to improve the safety assessment of Sodium Fast Reactors by decreasing the bias related to the deterministic analysis of severe accident scenarios.During the initiating phase, the subassembly wrapper tubes keep their mechanical integrity. Material disruption and dispersal is primarily one-dimensional. For this reason, evaluation methodology for the initiating phase relies on a multiple-channel approach. Typically a channel represents an average pin in a subassembly or a group of similar subassemblies. Inthe multiple-channel approach, the core thermal-hydraulics model is composed of 1 or 2 D channels. The thermal-hydraulics model is coupled to a neutronics module to provide an estimate of the reactor power level. In this project, a new computational model has been developed to extend the initiating phase modeling. This new model is based on a multi-physics coupling. This model has been applied to obtain information unavailable up to now in regards to neutronics and thermal-hydraulics models and their coupling.

Thermal Identification of Clandestine Burials: A Signature Analysis and Image Classification Approach

Servello, John A. 12 1900 (has links)
Clandestine burials, the interred human remains of forensic interest, are generally small features located in isolated environments. Typical ground searches can be both time-consuming and dangerous. Thermal remote sensing has been recognized for some time as a possible search strategy for such burials that are in relatively open areas; however, there is a paucity of published research with respect to this application. This project involved image manipulation, the analyses of signatures for "graves" of various depths when compared to an undisturbed background, and the use of image classification techniques to tease out these features. This research demonstrates a relationship between the depth of burial disturbance and the resultant signature. Further, image classification techniques, especially object-oriented algorithms, can be successfully applied to single band thermal imagery. These findings may ultimately decrease burial search times for law enforcement and increase the likelihood of locating clandestine graves.

Respiratory diseases, especially viral, have stood out because of their epidemic potential and the identified vulnerability towards infection during pregnancy. Objective: To assess the impact of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) due to infection (sepsis, meningitis and respiratory disease) and the factors associated with worse maternal outcome (near miss and death) among women of the Brazilian Network for the Surveillance of Severe Maternal Morbidity. Methods: secondary analysis of a cross-sectional, multicenter study that included 27 obstetric referral centers in five regions of Brazil between 2009 and 2010. Prospective surveillance of severe infection was performed using WHO criteria of potentially life threatening conditions (PLTC) and maternal near miss (MNM). The main sources of infection were identified and compared to other causes of SMM. Women with complications due to respiratory disease were also assessed in two groups: with and without suspected A(H1N1)pdm09 and also compared to other causes of SMM. Cases of suspected A(H1N1)pdm09 were reviewed and divided into three groups: non-tested, confirmed and unconfirmed for A(H1N1)pdm09 and their results were compared. Complications due to infection and respiratory disease were compared with complications due to other causes of SMM. Factors associated with SMO were assessed for cases of infection and respiratory disease. Results: Among the 9555 cases of SMM, only 502 (5.3%) had severe infection, however they were responsible for about a quarter of cases of MNM and almost half of the cases of maternal mortality (MM). The assessed health indicators demonstrate greater severity of cases complicated by infection, with a mortality index (MI) above 26% compared to 11% for other causes of SMM. For respiratory disease, 206 women had suspected A(H1N1)pdm09, about 60% were tested for the disease and 49 women were positive. The severity of the maternal outcomes was worse between the cases of A(H1N1)pdm09 positive, with a rate of MNM: MM below 1 (0.9: 1), compared to 12: 1 for other SMM causes. The MI among respiratory disease was superior to 50% (7.4% other causes SMM). Delays in care were associated with worse maternal prognosis and were present in over 50% of cases of infection. Perinatal results were worse in cases of respiratory disease, with increased prematurity, stillbirth, low birth weight and Apgar <7. HIV/AIDS, hysterectomy, prolonged hospitalization, ICU admission and delays in care were independent factors associated with severe maternal outcome. Conclusion: infections and especially those caused by A(H1N1)pdm09 presented great impact on maternal morbidity and mortality in Brazil and the identification of factors associated with the increased severity can contribute to the improvement of obstetric care. There is need for specific interventions during pregnancy, seeking early diagnosis and timely treatment of infections, which are essential for improving maternal health and to reducing the number of preventable maternal deaths in the country / Mestrado / Saúde Materna e Perinatal / Mestra em Ciências da Saúde

Challenging Old Truths : Viewing Cultural Hybridity from the Perspective of the Tarand-Graves / Att utmana gamla sanningar : Kulturell hybriditet betraktat utifrån tarandgravarna

Gottberg, Victoria January 2020 (has links)
A phenomenon during the late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age which in its simplest form could be called ‘a culture of the Baltic Sea’ is an idea which many archaeologists have favoured. However, the term ‘a culture of the Baltic Sea’ is not the most ideal to use when discussing the Baltic Sea during this time in prehistory, as the term is rather simplifying from what would be the more diverse truth. The term entails that there should have been a cultural homogeneity across the Baltic Sea as it most certainly was not. This thesis complicates this otherwise simplified term and calls the cultural phenomenon ‘a cultural hybrid of the northern Baltic Sea area’ (i.e. the northern part of the Baltic Sea including its neighbouring gulfs). A cultural hybrid, in this sense, allows there to be cultural differences within an area. These differences are accepted by the people within the cultural hybrid which in turn allow people to live among each other, rather than to become a social obstacle making the people separate into smaller and more homogenous cultural groups. This assumed existence of a cultural hybrid is put to the test as a hypothesis. To answer the hypothesis, the cultural hybrid is studied from the perspective of the tarand-graves (an Estonian originating grave type erected and used around the shores of the northern Baltic Sea area during 500 BC–500 AD) which in turn is interpreted according to ritual practice theory. The hypothesis is proven to be true which makes it possible to apply the concept of cultural hybridity, and its connection with tarand-graves in the northern Baltic Sea area, to the Åland Islands. Although the islands have a very promising geographical position in the middle of the northern Baltic Sea area, interestingly, no tarand-graves have been registered there. Grave field Ec 6.6 on the western side of the Åland Islands becomes the object of study mainly due to grave 14, which placed on that particular grave field, carries a high tarand-grave potential. The material is partly collected from two field visits to Ec 6.6 and partly from an excavational report from 1949 of the same grave field. The result shows that the Åland Islands, as well as Ec 6.6, have a very high likeliness of being hosts for tarand-graves.

Evaluating the Environmental Impact of a Product : Partial Life Cycle Assessment / Utvärdering av en produkts miljöpåverkan : Partiell livscykelanalys

Ek, Lina, Ström, Sanna January 2020 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of this research is to investigate how manufacturing organisations can decrease their environmental impact in the supply chain. To meet the purpose, two research questions were formulated:  1. How can a manufacturing organisation reduce its environmental impact caused by transportation?  2. How can a manufacturing organisation reduce its environmental impact caused by production?  Method – To provide the opportunity to reach a conclusion and to create a basic understanding of the research area, a literature review was conducted, which formed the basis of the theoretical framework. Through a case study at a manufacturing organisation, interviews and document analyses were used as sources for empirical data. In order to develop solutions and recommendations, collected data and theoretical framework were analysed and discussed.  Findings – The research findings indicate that there are several possible measures to implement to reduce an organisation's environmental impact in the supply chain. A decisive factor is creating a holistic and fundamental understanding of sustainability and enabling everyone involved to work according a common view and in the same direction. In addition, a requirement to pursue the same goal is that all stakeholders are involved where a prerequisite is a well-functioning internal communication.  Implications – The research did not contribute to any new theories, but through the research analysis, statements and theories from previous research were strengthened. The research suggests actions that can be used for organisations to reduce their environmental impact, but also to increase the understanding of why actions should be implemented. Society has an important responsibility for motivating and provide conditions for manufacturing organisations to reduce their footprint. This research is considered to lead to an improved environment in the form of lower emission levels where both organisations and the entire community take responsibility for the planet.  Limitations – The case study is designed as a single-case study which, from a validity perspective, is not considered as advantageous as a multiple case study because the results are difficult to generalize. In order to strengthen the study's reliability, several functional units and / or organisations could have been included in the study.

Examining the incremental validity of psychopathy versus antisocial personality disorder in understanding patterns of criminal behavior

Braithwaite, Erika 08 1900 (has links)
Psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder are two related yet clinically distinct syndromes both coined as important predictors of violence and criminality. Among the mentally ill, there is increasing evidence that only the behavioral aspects of psychopathy are related to criminality. Studies have shown that the personality-oriented facets of psychopathy add little to the prediction of future violence among the mentally ill. However, few studies have sought to examine whether a lifetime of crime shows the same pattern. A total of 96 men who had been declared not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder participated in this study. Trained interviewers assessed antisocial personality and psychopathy among participants. Official RCMP criminal records were consulted in order to ascertain criminal history. Results suggest that neither antisocial personality disorder traits nor psychopathy facets evidenced incremental validity one over the other regarding a lifetime pattern of offending. A higher number of antisocial traits were related to a greater number and higher severity of non-violent offenses. Results are discussed with regards to the usefulness of the antisocial personality disorder classification, and the applicability of conceptual models of psychopathy to individuals with a severe mental illness.

Death's reflection in the water : Mortuary ritual, ancestral worship and the cosmological significance of water on the island of Gotland during the Pitted Ware culture / Dödens reflektion i vattnet : Gravritualer, förfädersdyrkan och vattnets kosmologiska signifikans under gropkeramisk kultur på Gotland

Hed, Maja January 2021 (has links)
The Pitted Ware culture on Gotland presents a multitude of material that allow archeologists to re-construct and visit the socio-economic structure of a middle-neolithic settlement in the Baltic sea. I will be analyzing the archaeological material in accordance to the ocean, and to what we can interpret as ritual and cosmological variables at the site through ritual theory, and with a method of comparative analogy and research. How maritime aspects of divinity manifested itself to the PWC, ontology and belief system could perhaps reveal how the cognitive, collective mind of one culture evolved and made connections to otherworldly entities. Often in the form of ancestral worship, which will be one of the main issues that will be analyzed and discussed throughout, in addition to mortuary ritual.

Thresholds to the ancestors : An examination of south-west portals with regards to cult and symbolism / Trösklar till förfäderna : En undersökning av sydvästportar med hänsyn till kult och symbolism

Bransell, Oskar January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the relevancy of south-west portals with regards to their potential usage in post-burial ritual activity with particular focus on the deposition of sacrificial offerings. South-west portals are a type of stone constructions found on the edges of mounds and stone settings in eastern central Sweden usually dating to the Viking Age (c. 750-1100 CE). As many as possible of all excavated south-west portals are accounted for. The find materials in south-west portals as well as their accessibility are assessed in accordance with the reasoning that long-term grave cult would result in repeated sacrificial depositions and that the portals would have had to have been accessible for such sacrifices to have been conducted. There is no clear evidence of south-west portals having been used for deliberate sacrificial depositions. Some portals would have been inaccessible and most non-funerary find assemblages were likely non-deliberate or at least nonindicative of repeated sacrifices. South-west portals were likely more relevant in funerary rites of passage or potentially odd instances of necromancy rather than in sacrifices connected to ancestor worship.
