A Gotlandic Picture Stone Tradition Reconsidered : An analysis and reclassification of the so-called kerbstones / En gotländsk bildstenstradition omprövat : En analys och omklassificering av de så kallade kantstenarna

Larkin, Cherie Jeanette January 2023 (has links)
In 1941/42, Sune Lindqvist published his seminal work on the Gotlandic picture stones (Gotlands Bildsteine I & II) in which he included a category of stones that he interpreted as kerbstones. However, Lindqvist’s kerbstones have not received further examination or contextualization to determine the validity of his categorization. In my analysis, I take a hermeneutic approach that incorporates theories of agency, materiality, and phenomenology to contextualize the so-called kerbstones within not only the picture stone tradition but also the broader Gotlandic tradition of marking graves and memorials. Utilizing 3D visual reconstructions, I have confirmed that some of Lindqvist’s kerbstones could have been part of a circular edge chain and can be connected to the picture stone tradition. However, there are additional types of picture stones within Lindqvist’s kerbstone category which cannot be categorized as kerbstones and that likely represent additional types of picture stone monuments.

[pt] A GRAVE E GENERALIZADA VIOLAÇÃO DE DIREITOS HUMANOS: A PROTEÇÃO (INTER)NACIONAL DA PESSOA HUMANA E A CONSTRUÇÃO DA DEFINIÇÃO AMPLIADA DE REFUGIADA(O) NO BRASIL / [en] THE GROSS AND GENERALIZED VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: THE (IN-TER)NATIONAL PROTECTION OF THE HUMAN PERSON AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE EXTENDED REFUGEE DEFINITION IN BRAZIL

ADRIANA FERNANDES BASILIO 18 June 2021 (has links)
[en] The present study undertook an analysis about the concept of Gross and Generalized Violation of Human Rights (GGVDH), in an attempt to understand what the foundations of the extended definition of refugee are and how it has been constructed in Brazil. Through a bibliographic and documental research, the data used in this Master s Thesis was collected from the following sources: theses, dissertations, books and articles; reports from government, international and non-governmental organizations; treaties, declarations and legislation. This thesis sought to present the international protective architecture of the human person, investigating its connections with the various mechanisms of International Human Rights Law, their complementariness, regimes, regional and national applications to then, explore the refuge trajectory in Brazil, not only until the construction of the GGVDH concept by the government, but also its recognition. Initially, the international legal framework was presented, their interdependence and relevance to the human protection, culminating in the Cartagena Declaration (1984) and its revision processes. Subsequently, it demonstrated the Brazilian history in terms of refuge, up until the period of re-democratization and incorporation of the GGVDH concept by the Law n 9.474/1997. Finally, it presented a brief analysis of the refugee status recognition under GGVDH in Brazil, in an attempt to map the gov-ernment’s position in relation to this definition, its application and limitations, pointing out some nuances and conclusions.

Queering the Normal? : An intersectional study of gender identities and roles in the Late Iron Age cemeteries at Lovö, Sweden / Ifrågasätter det normala?

Tate, Leticia January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the relationship between grave goods and the identity of buried individuals. The interpretation of sex and gender, as well as gendered grave goods in Late Iron Age Scandinavia, is of a particular focus. A comparative analysis of 163 graves was carried out using an intersectional theoretic perspective, statistical analysis, and a database, with the Lovö cemeteries serving as the case study. The results of this analysis revealed certain patterns and variances that demonstrate a relationship between the grave goods assemblages that were chosen and aspects of an individual’s identity, including gender for some grave goods, but a lack of a correlation for other grave goods. Thus, it concluded that “normal” burials are influenced by factors such as facets of one’s identity, community standing and social status, familial ties and kinship, and lived experiences, with each grave tailored to suit the individual, and that gender as a whole has little influence on how a burial is constructed.

"Oheliga" gravar : En studie om gravsättningar utanför kyrkogårdarna i Västerbottens län från och med Medeltid / "unholy" graves : A study of burials outside of the cemeteries in Västerbotten county from the Middle Ages onwards

Dahl, Frida January 2024 (has links)
This essay aims to contextualize the placement of deviant and atypical graves within the landscape of Västerbotten county in Sweden, in relation to the contemporary Christian cemeteries from the Middle Ages to the year 1960. To understand the need and reasoning for deviant and atypical graves from a religious standpoint several medieval laws are studied, such as the Cannon law of the Catholic church, the Swedish medieval landscape laws, and the Norwegian medieval regional laws. The revision and the annulment of the medieval laws are also taken into consideration to understand how the regulations surrounding deviant and atypical graves changes over time in Sweden and Norway. To build an understanding how deviant and atypical graves has been utilized in Västerbotten county throughout history, ethnographic and historical literature is studied. Geographical and historical contexts are also considered to contextualize the placement of the graves within the landscape. The placement of Churches and cemeteries within the landscape over time is also studied to understand how the need for atypical graves changed over time.

Taken to the grave. An archaeozoological approach assessing the role of animals as crematory offerings in first millennium AD Britain.

Worley, Fay L. January 2008 (has links)
The crematory funerary rites practiced by those living in parts of mainland Britain during the first millennium AD included burning complete or parts of animals on the pyre. This thesis highlights the potential for archaeozoological analysis of faunal pyre goods using assemblages from the first millennium AD as a dataset. Experimental study and the integration of current research from a number of disciplines is used to suggest that although pyrolysis and cremation practices fragment and distort burnt bone assemblages, careful analysis can reveal a wealth of data leading to the interpretation of various forms of pyre good. The results of the author¿s analysis of material from the sites of Brougham, Cumbria, St. Stephen¿s, Hertfordshire, Castleford, West Yorkshire and Heath Wood, Derbyshire are combined with data from other published cemeteries to suggest a series of chronological and regional continuities in the use of animals but with a distinct change at the start of the Early Medieval period. The results from Brougham are particularly significant as they alter preconceived views on the utilisation of animals in Romano-British funerary practice. Cremation burials in first millennium AD Britain are shown to include the burnt remains of predominantly domestic taxa with occasional wild species. The pyre goods are interpreted as representing food offerings, companions, amulets, gaming items and sacrifices. This thesis demonstrates that cremated animal bone should not be disregarded but rather valued as source of archaeozoological data, and a significant functional tool for interpreting past funerary behaviour and animal utilisation.

The Badarian culture of ancient Egypt in context : critical evaluation

Vorster, Lambert 02 1900 (has links)
This study aims to determine whether current and past research on the Badarian culture of early Egypt accurately reflects the evidence uncovered in the past and the evaluation of the excavation reports by the early excavators. An archaeological re-evaluation of the Badarian culture and relevant sites is presented in the introduction. Inter-regional development of the Badarian is crucial to placing the Badarian in the temporal ladder of the predynastic cultures, leading up the formation of the dynastic era of Ancient Egypt. The following thesis is not meant to be a definitive answer on the origins and placement of the Badarian people in the Predynastic hierarchy of ancient Egypt, but one of its aims is to stimulate discussion and offer alternatives to the narrative of the Badarian culture. A set of outcomes is presented to test all hypotheses. Research questions are discussed to determine whether the Badarian culture is a regional phenomenon restricted to a small area around the Badari-Mostagedda-Matmar region, or as a wider inter-regional variable carrying on into the later Nagada cultures. To reach a hypothesis, the chronology of the Badarian is analysed, in-depth study of the original excavation reports and later research on the Badarian question. An important facet of this study is a literature review of the Badarian culture, past and present. The Badarian culture had always been a subject of speculation, especially in terms of its chronology and regional development. There is no consensus on the chronology of dispersion out of the desert to the Nile Valley, as well as areas north and south of the Nile Valley. It is important to establish the concept of an agronomic sedentary lifestyle by the Badarian, and to re-evaluate the evidence for the long-standing idea that the Badarian was in fact the first farmers of the Nile Valley, also in terms of their perceived exchange and trade networks. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / D. Libertà interna e libertà esterna nel consenso matrimoniale canonico. L'incidenza delle condotte pre e para suicidarie / LIBERTA' INTERNA E LIBERTA' ESTERNA NEL CONSENSO MATRIMONIALE CANONICO: L'INCIDENZA DELLE CONDOTTE PRE E PARA SUICIDARIE / Internal freedom and external freedom in the canonic matrimonial consent. The incidence of pre and para suicidal behaviors

LOBIATI, PAOLO GIUSEPPE MARIA 14 May 2021 (has links)
The study examines the relationship between two realities: one legal, marriage consent, and the other belonging to the context of the fact, pre and para suicidal conduct. The concrete need was to understand in a univocal way the interaction between the freedom of consent - as a fundamental dimension for this to have legal effects - and some behaviors put in place by one of the two engaged or by third parties, so as to evaluate how these can affect on the validity of the deed. Two heads of nullity have been considered - the Grave fear and the Lake of discretion of judgment - which doctrine and jurisprudence consider those that involve the willful faculty, deepening in the first part the relationship between conduct and external freedom while in the second on the internal freedom. The method was to analyze the jurisprudence as a source that allows both to interpret the law and to specify and embody the cases in point. The conclusion is that the pre- and para-suicidal behaviors cannot be inserted among the circumstances that make the nullity of the marriage manifest in relation to the freedom of consent, in fact it is not possible to support the presumptive value but it is necessary, every time, to compare them with the other facts. reported in the procedural tables.

Genus & jakt : Ett funktionalistiskt genusperspektiv på gropkeramiska gravgåvor i Ajvide & Västerbjers

Olsson Romanus, Elmer January 2023 (has links)
This essay tries to deduct whether the pitted ware culture (3200-2300) at Ajvide and Västerbjers had a gender structure based on big game hunting via grave furniture. The grave furniture is selected on the basis of big game affiliation and then subjected to descriptive statistics and correspondence analysis. The results suggest that seal and boar hunting is normative for men but that only seal is normative for women in Ajvide and only boar at Västerbjers. /
Denna uppsats tilldelades ett A i betyg.

Réponse à l'infection : apport du transcriptome

Textoris, Julien 30 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
