You have to live to be able to die : A qualitative study on dying & grieving people and how they reflect and feel about death

Fjeldbo, Merete January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore how the clergy, represented by priests and deacons, experience the reflections and emotions of dying and grieving people. A qualitative method was then applied in the form of a thematic analysis. The data collection was conducted through seven interviews, using a semi structured interview guide. The criteria for the participants were being in a work role as a priest or a deacon and having experience with dying and/or grieving people. The thematic analysis generated seven themes as a response to the two research questions. The theme Outlook on life and the death process describes how reflecting on life and death naturally occurs within most dying people, but that it is being expressed in different ways. The range of emotions gives an impression of how different life situations presupposes different emotions, but that it is also possible to see emotional patterns. Death acceptance describes to what extent the respondents perceive that dying people come to an acceptance of their own death. The significance of relationships highlights the importance of building relationships through life and indicates how this affects the death process. The last phase into death describes how people move back and forth between life and death in the final phase. Fear of talking about death concerns the fear many people have of talking about and relating to death and dying people. The grieving process describes the reflections, reactions and emotions that the respondents see and experience in grieving people. The results show that the reflections and emotions of dying people significantly depends on their situation. However, there is a clear connection between how people lived their lives and their death process. For grieving people, a feeling of emptiness is prevalent, and a perceived presence of the dead.

The Diaries of Käthe Kollwitz: 1916-1917

Provine, Carolyn 01 February 2023 (has links)
This thesis is a translation of and critical introduction to a seventeen-month excerpt of the World War I diaries of German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. These diaries present a unique insight into Kollwitz’s life during the war and the process behind her art. The source text for this translation are entries from August 1, 1916, to December 31, 1917, as printed in the 2012 edition of the diaries prepared by the artist’s granddaughter, Jutta Bohnke-Kollwitz, and first published in full in 1989. The thesis also translates Bohnke-Kollwitz’s introduction to the published volume and her footnotes on the selected entries. The critical introduction to the translation discusses this excerpt in the historical context of World War I, addressing the relationship between the patriotic “spirit of 1914” and the cultural constraints on grieving mothers to largely mourn in silence, as Kollwitz did for her own fallen son Peter. This situates Kollwitz among intellectuals and intellectual women in Germany at the time, and follows Kollwitz’s transition from an initial pro-war stance to eventual anti-war activism as documented in the diaries. The introduction then discusses my translation strategy, which draws on functionalist theories of translation to develop an approach that foregrounds Kollwitz’s own voice as a writer and the nature of the text as a private document. This approach aligns with the intended function of this translation, which particularly values the diaries for their intimacy and for the insight they can give us onto Kollwitz’s inner experience during a tumultuous historical time.

ATT LEVA EFTER DÖDEN : En kvalitativ studie om professionellas erfarenheter av vuxnas sorg efter en närståendes död / LIVING AFTER DEATH : A qualitative study on professionals' experiences of adults' grief after the death of a loved one

Ojanne, Claudia, Wulff, Madeleine, Öz, Patricia January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to examine professional’s experiences of adult’s grieving processes and how they treat bereaved people. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals who all in their professional role meet adults in grief. A thematic analysis was used and five themes emerged: adults' grieving processes, attitudes towards grieving, listening and validating support, support in grief and tools in the profession. To analyze the results, Kübler-Ross' theory of the five phases of grief and the concept of complicated grief were used. Kübler-Ross theory focuses on the phases of the grieving process. The complicated grief focuses on when grief persists with pathological symptoms. The results showed that the grieving process of adults was experienced by professionals as dynamic and context-bound. Professionals' main approach towards grieving people has been presented as neutral and context dependant. Professionals have expressed that grieving adults need support that is not time limited and characterized by presence and adapted support. Furthermore, professional´s education and experiences have been shown to be elements in the profession that is key to adequate and beneficial bereavement support.

A social constructionist understanding of mourning : Indian widows' experiences

Bhana, Jyoti 30 November 2007 (has links)
Death is one of the few certainties in life. It comes to all of us, but the way in which we deal with it will vary according to a range of social and cultural factors. Based on my mother's experiences since being widowed, this dissertation has undertaken a qualitative research method to examine how Hindu widows express their mourning in their context, thereby defining their experiences of widowhood. The aim of this dissertation is to give voice to the mourning experiences of Hindu widows. By examining these constructions of mourning experiences, one is able to gain an understanding of grief from a cultural perspective, which may serve as a guide for professional counsellors and academics in their endeavours to provide much needed support and understanding for bereaved Hindu women. The epistemological framework is social constructionism. In this study five Hindu widows were interviewed with the intention of providing readers and fellow researchers with insight into their narratives, and the data was hermeneutically analysed. The participants' stories were interpreted and categorised into themes. This study allowed for elaborate and detailed descriptions about Hindu widows' experiences to surface, with the view that this study will broaden the way Hindu widowhood is thought of. Analyses reveals that within patriarchal society, Hindu widows appear inadequately prepared for their widowhood. As a result they experience financial, emotional and psychological difficulties, which make adjusting to widowhood a challenge. The perspective this study hopes to argue for is broader, inclusive, collaborative engagement and thinking in respect of Indian widowhood / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Unexpected death of a child : a constructivist approach

Slom, R. L. (Roxane Lecia) 10 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores mothers' reactions to, and methods of dealing with, the sudden death of a child, using a constructivist approach. The study focusses on the meanings that mothers construe in relation to the sudden death of their child and the role of these constructions in her "recovery" from this loss. It also explores the grieving process, the effect of the loss on the mother, including a focus on changes in her value system, her role as a mother and as a wife, as well as the impact of this loss on the family system. The study was conducted on the basis of qualitative research methodology, making use of the case study method. The sample consisted of three mothers, selected purposively. The data gathered was analysed inductively. / Psychology / M.A.(Clinical Psychology)

Healing through the Bones: Empowerment and the 'Process of Exhumations' in the Context of Cyprus

Fics, Kristian Taxiarchis Phikas 19 January 2016 (has links)
Inter-ethnic and intra-ethnic violent conflict created a divide in Cyprus (1950-1974) that still exists to this day. This study explores specifically an effect of violent conflict – Missing Persons – and the ‘process of exhumations,’ which is defined as; the recovery of Missing Persons, identification, and reunification of the Missing with loved ones as a key component of peacebuilding via inter-ethnic reconciliation and restorative justice. This process is important for peacebuilding because it empowers individuals, communities, and nation-states to satisfy basic human psycho-social needs in order to deal with the trauma of past violence, to recognize loss, and to seek closure of uncertainty to prevent the transgenerational transmission of trauma and escalation of violence between and within ethnic societies. By interviewing eight experts on the Cypriot conflict about what the ‘process of exhumations’ does in Cyprus, revealed the challenges and successes that may arise during and after the process for sustainable peace. / February 2016
