Propagation and monitoring of freshwater mussels released into the Clinch and Powell rivers, Virginia and Tennessee

Freshwater mussels (Unionidae) in the United States have experienced dramatic declines, and 25% species are listed as federally endangered. Hence, recovery plans for endangered species proposed a strategy of propagation of young mussels for release to natal rivers to augment declining populations. In this study, I conducted laboratory experiments, assessed site suitability for mussel restoration, and evaluated survival and growth rates of released mussels to meet the requirements of recovery plan. I conducted multiple experiments to develop an improved protocol for juvenile mussel propagation and culture. Significantly greater survival and growth rates were found in newly metamorphosed juveniles of the rainbow mussel (Villosa iris) reared in a substrate of fine sediment and one-month-old juveniles of wavy-rayed lampmussel (Lampsilis fasciola) fed on natural food in pond water. Bio-filter media greatly increased water quality by reducing the concentration of ammonia and nitrite. The negative impacts of flatworm predation and filamentous algae in juvenile culture were controlled, and juvenile escapement was prevented. Juvenile mussels were successfully produced and cultured to stockable size (>15 mm) for release. I released laboratory-propagated mussels at three historically important sites in Clinch and Powell rivers for the assessment of site suitability. Use of cages was the most effective method to determine site suitability because the free-released mussels (untagged, tagged) had low catchability. Mussels released at Horton Ford, Clinch River, exhibited significantly faster growth. Horton Ford is the most suitable site, while environmental conditions at Fugate Ford, Powell River, are deemed unsuitable for mussel restoration and recovery. To facilitate the detection of released mussels, I applied Passive Integrated Transponder tags to laboratory-produced juveniles of the endangered Cumberlandian combshell (Epioblasma brevidens) and released them near Brooks Bridge, Powell River. The detection probability increased above 98%. I developed a set of hierarchical Bayesian models incorporating individual variations, seasonal variations, periodic growth stages and growth cessation to estimate survival, detection probability and growth of released mussels in a changing environment. Mussels of E. brevidens exhibited great survival (> 99% per month) and growth, indicating suitable conditions for recovery of this endangered species at this site. / Ph. D.

On the Melting and Crystallization of Linear Polyethylene, Poly(ethylene oxide) and Metallocene Linear Low-Density Polyethylene

The crystallization and melting behaviors of an ethylene/1-hexene copolymer and series of narrow molecular weight linear polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide) fractions were studied using a combination of ultra-fast and conventional differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering, and wide angle X-ray diffraction. In the case of linear polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide), the zero-entropy production melting temperatures of initial lamellae of isothermally crystallized fractions were analyzed in the context of the non-linear Hoffman-Weeks method. Using the Huggins equation, limiting equilibrium melting temperatures of 141.4 ± 0.8oC and 81.4 ± 1.0oC were estimated for linear polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide), respectively. The former and the latter are about 4oC lower and 12.5oC higher than these predicted by Flory/Vrij and Buckley/Kovacs, respectively. Accuracy of the non-linear Hoffman-Weeks method was also examined using initial lamellar thickness literature data for a linear polyethylene fraction at different crystallization temperatures. The equilibrium melting temperature obtained by the Gibbs-Thomson approach and the C2 value extracted from the initial lamellar thickness vs. reciprocal of undercooling plot were similar within the limits of experimental error to those obtained here through the non-linear Hoffman-Weeks method. In the next step, the Lauritzen-Hoffman (LH) secondary nucleation theory was modified to account for the effect of stem length fluctuations, tilt angle of the crystallized stems, and temperature dependence of the lateral surface free energy. Analysis of spherulite growth rate and wide angle X-ray diffraction data for 26 linear polyethylene and 5 poly(ethylene oxide) fractions revealed that the undercooling at the regime I/II transition, the equilibrium fold surface free energy, the strength of the stem length fluctuations and the substrate length at the regime I/II transition are independent of chain length. The value of the equilibrium fold surface free energy derived from crystal growth rate data using the modified Lauritzen-Hoffman theory matches that calculated from lamellar thickness and melting data through the Gibbs-Thomson equation for both linear polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide). Larger spherulitic growth rates for linear polyethylene than for poly(ethylene oxide) at low undercooling is explained by the higher secondary nucleation constant of poly(ethylene oxide). While the apparent friction coefficient of a crystallizing linear polyethylene chain is 2 to 8 times higher than that of a chain undergoing reptation in the melt state, the apparent friction coefficient of a crystallizing poly(ethylene oxide) chain is about two orders of magnitude lower. This observation suggests that segmental mobility on the crystal phase plays a significant role in the crystal growth process. In case of the statistical ethylene/1-hexene copolymer, the fold surface free energies of the copolymer lamellae at the time of crystallization and melting increase with increasing undercooling, approaching the same magnitude at high undercooling. As a result of this temperature dependence, the experimental melting vs. crystallization temperature plot is parallel to the Tm = Tc line and the corresponding Gibbs-Thomson plot is non-linear. This behavior is attributed to the fact that longer ethylene sequences form a chain-folded structure with lower concentration of branch points on the lamellar surface at lower undercooling, while shorter ethylene sequences form lamellar structures at higher undercooling exhibiting a higher concentration of branch points on the lamellar surface. Branch points limit the ability of lamellar structures to relax their kinetic stem-length fluctuations during heating prior to melting. / Ph. D. / Morphology of semi-crystalline polymers is strongly affected by their crystallization conditions. Thermodynamic and kinetic models allow us to understand the crystallization mechanism of a semi-crystalline polymer and relate its crystallization conditions to the final morphology. In this research, we studied the molar mass dependence of the crystallization and melting behaviors of narrow molecular weight distribution linear polyethylene (LPE) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) fractions using a modified Lauritzen-Hoffman (LH) secondary nucleation theory. We have shown that the equilibrium melting temperature of LPE and PEO fractions found from the non-linear Hoffman-Weeks method are within the experimental uncertainty identical with these measured directly for extended chain crystals or derived from a Gibbs-Thomson analysis. The value of the equilibrium fold surface free energy derived from crystal growth rate data using the modified LH theory matches that calculated from lamellar thickness and melting data through the Gibbs-Thomson equation for both LPE and PEO. We reported that the higher segmental mobility of PEO in the crystalline phase leads to significantly lower apparent chain friction coefficients during crystal growth compared to LPE. We also studied the role of short-chain branching in the crystal growth kinetics of ethylene/1-hexene copolymers. We observed that the fold surface free energies during crystallization and during melting are both function of the undercooling while the ratio of the former to the latter decreases with increasing undercooling. We proposed that this behavior may be related to the concentration of short-chain branches at the surface of the lamellae, where higher concentration leads to lower relaxation.

Pollinators, Enemies, Drought, and the Evolution of Reproductive Traits in Primula farinosa

In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically, I (1) determined whether the effects of floral display and interactions with pollinators and seed predators, and plant reproductive success were frequency-dependent and affected by surrounding vegetation context, (2) examined the consequences of intermittent drought years on population dynamics using numerical simulations based on demographic data collected over seven years, (3) analyzed among-population differentiation in flowering phenology and reproductive allocation, and its relationship to soil-depth at the site of origin. A field experiment suggested that conspicuous plants facilitate inconspicuous plants in terms of pollinator attraction, and that the facilitation effect is contingent on the height of the surrounding vegetation. Further experiments revealed that both mutualistic and antagonistic interactions can result in frequency-dependent selection on floral display. Among inconspicuous plants, both fruit initiation, and damage from seed predators increased with the proportion of the conspicuous morph. The relative strength of these effects, and therefore their net outcome on the relationship between morph ratio and seed production varied among years. I combined information on vital rates and their relation to environmental conditions in simulations to predict future population viability in changing environments. Simulated stochastic population growth rate decreased with increasing frequency of drought years. Reproductive allocation varied significantly among populations both in the field and in a common-garden experiment, but was correlated with soil depth at the site of origin only in the field. The results suggest that among-population variation in reproductive effort in the field mainly reflects plastic responses to environmental conditions, and that this plasticity may be adaptive. The common-garden experiment suggested that the study populations have diverged genetically in flowering time.

因有眾多實證研究支持若隨持有期不同,而能適時調整投資策略,便可獲取超額報酬,且月營收資訊具有相當程度的資訊內涵。因此,本研究延伸傳統動能策略的概念,而改以三種當月營收成長率做為篩選投資組合的條件,進而形成營收動能策略(sales momentum strategy),研究主要目的為欲確認此策略於台灣股市之有效性,並同時印證『強者恆強』與『漲時重勢、跌時重質』觀念是否適用。再者,亦提供利用市場公開訊息建構投資組合之選擇,以協助彌補一般投資者無法與專業機構法人同步取得領先資訊之劣勢,進而改善投資績效。 本研究投資組合建構之方式為,於每月11日,上市公司月營收全數公布,並可自TEJ資料庫取得完整資料時,依照當月營收月增率、當月營收年增率及當月累計營收年增率等三項篩選條件,分別將所有上市公司進行排序,排序方式則區分為十等分(10%)及五等分(20%)兩種。其中,成長率排名前10%或20%的群體稱為贏家組合,排名後10%或20%的群體則稱為輸家組合。當贏、輸家組合篩選完成後,買入贏家組合,同時賣出輸家組合,即可產生一零成本營收動能策略投資組合。 綜合本研究各項實證分析的結果推斷,營收動能策略於台灣股市確實具有其效果,亦即台灣股市的投資人對於營收成長率訊息普遍存在反應不足現象,且印證營收宣告存在資訊內涵,惟各種投資組合績效將因篩選條件與持有期不同而產生差異。其中,尤以當月營收年增率為篩選條件,所建構之營收動能策略投資組合可獲得最佳的績效表現,且獲利並非來自於承擔市場系統性風險。此外,營收動能策略投資組合之元月效應並不明顯,而『強者恆強』與『漲時重勢、跌時重質』的觀念,則的確存在一定的參考價值。

Neolithic dispersal in Europe has been alternatively explained through spread of farmers (migrationist position) or by adoption of farming by Mesolithic foragers (indigenist position). Mixed explanations have considered a combination of both processes. Neolithic dispersal in Central Europe was traditionally viewed as migrationist process. It was believed that farmers colonized the area and replaced indigenous foragers. During the last decade, authors have adhered to integrationist view as they have observed the continuity between Mesolithic and Neolithic technologies. Interestingly, the most recent genetic analyses again invoked the idea of colonization. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to demographic modeling. The farming quickly spread in Central Europe between 5 600 and 5 400 calBC. Assuming colonization, Neolithic dispersal in Central Europe would have to be associated with high fertility rate of farmers. Our goal was to test whether the fertility rate of farmers was high enough to allow them to colonize Central Europe without admixture with local foragers. The influence of lifestyle on demographic responses to climate change : the Alpine marmot as a case study / Influence du mode de vie sur les réponses démographiques au changement climatique : l'exemple de la marmotte alpine

Comprendre la réponse des populations aux variations environnementales est un défi central en écologie et est devenu un enjeu indéniable ces dernières années avec le changement climatique. Dans ce contexte, nous pouvons nous attendre à ce que certaines caractéristiques écologiques propres aux espèces, comme le mode de vie, qui ont évolué en réponse à des contraintes environnementales et qui influencent les traits d'histoire de vie des espèces, puissent façonner la démographie des populations en environnement variable. Pourtant, cette influence du mode de vie sur la réponse démographique des populations demeure encore mal comprise. J'ai essayé de combler cette lacune au cours de ma thèse, principalement par l'analyse d'un jeu de données exceptionnel obtenu grâce à un suivi à long terme d'une population de marmottes alpines (Marmota marmota) dans les Alpes Françaises. La marmotte alpine présente un mode de vie très particulier. Les individus vivent au sein de groupes familiaux de taille variable, généralement composés d'un couple de dominants reproducteurs, de subordonnés et de juvéniles. Ils hibernent durant la moitié de l'année, et pratiquent l'élevage coopératif ; les subordonnés mâles participent activement à la survie des jeunes durant l'hibernation, et sont alors appelés helpers. J'ai d'abord étudié comment le mode de vie de la marmotte (qui allie hibernation et socialité) a influencé les effets des fluctuations météorologiques sur les variations de survie de chaque classe d'âge. Les résultats ont alors révélé une forte diminution de la survie des juvéniles au fil des ans, et cela du fait d'effets interactifs entre facteurs environnementaux (i.e., hivers de plus en plus rudes) et sociaux (i.e., diminution de la présence des helpers). Dans un deuxième temps, j'ai étudié la valeur adaptative de l'élevage coopératif au sein de cette population de marmottes alpines et j'ai pu montrer que les effets bénéfiques de la présence des helpers sur la survie des juvéniles tendaient à disparaître du fait du changement climatique. En conséquence de cela, la population de marmottes alpines semble être actuellement en déclin. Cependant, l'impact du changement climatique semble avoir été en partie limité par une plus grande probabilité d'accéder à la dominance pour les subordonnés au cours des dernières années, ce qui démontre une influence complexe de la socialité sur la réponse de cette espèce. Enfin, j'ai comparé la démographie de la population de marmottes alpines avec celle d'une population de chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) soumise à des variations météorologiques similaires dans les Alpes. J'ai été en mesure de montrer que le mode de vie et la stratégie de reproduction de ces espèces ont façonné différemment leurs réponses démographiques aux variations environnementales, et ainsi au changement climatique / Understanding populations' response to environmental variation is a central issue of ecology, and has become a compelling goal in the last years due to climate change. In this broad context we could expect some species-specific ecological characteristics known to influence life history traits, such as lifestyle, to shape the demography of populations in variable environments as well as structure between-species differences in response to environmental change. Yet, the influence of species' lifestyle on population demographic responses to environmental variation is still poorly understood. During my PhD, I tried to fill this gap primarily through the analysis of an extensive data set of an Alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) population in the Alps. Alpine marmots present a particular lifestyle. 1ndividuals live in family groups of variable size, typically composed of one dominant breeding pair, of sexually mature and immature subordinates and of pups of the year. Half the year, they hibernate together in burrows and practise cooperative breeding with male subordinates acting as helpers for the pups, increasing their survival probability during hibernation. I first investigated how the marmot's lifestyle (hibernation and sociality) mediated the effects of weather fluctuations on age-specific survival variation. I found that juvenile survival strongly decreased over the years because of inter-related effects of harsher winter weather conditions and social factors (i.e., decrease in helpers' presence). In a second step, I studied the adaptive value of cooperative breeding in this Alpine marmot population, and showed that the positive influence of helpers' presence on juvenile survival was vanishing with climate change. The Alpine marmot population is currently decreasing accordingly. However, in parallel to the latter changes, I found a better access to dominance for subordinate individuals over the years, compensating in part this decrease, and highlighting a complex influence of sociality on marmot response to climate change. Finally, I compared the demography of the Alpine marmot population with that of an Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) population, subjected to similar weather conditions in the Alps. I was able to show that the difference in lifestyle and reproductive tactic between these species shaped their demographic responses to environmental variation, providing them with differentresistance to current environmental change
