Urban Renewal Project of Kaohsiung Port Railway Station: The Sustainable Development of Kaohisung Harbor

Tung, Yi-Chun 27 July 2011 (has links)
Port of Kaohsiung is the most important harbor of southern Taiwan and it was once the third biggest cargo harbor in the world. Recently, the ranking of Port of Kaohsiung dropped from the 3rd to the 13th, thus the Central Government of Taiwan has introduced a plan to enhance the situations. ¡§Urban Renewal Project of Kaohsiung Port Railway Station,¡¨ involves the development planning of many sites and the waterfront regeneration along the Kaohsiung Harbor. This paper argues that the sustainability is the key of success of the project. This paper will (1) to discuss the gains from the economic developments, (2) to examine the details and discuss the coming challenges and potential obstacles in pursuing greater socio-economic goodness, and (3) outline the possible solutions, practices, and mechanisms which might be useful in attaining a sustainable development of Kaohsiung Harbor by studying other countries¡¦ success and failures in their waterfront redevelopment projects.

Urban Transformation Within The Interface Of Design And Administration: The Case Of Izmir Harbor District

Acar, Yigit 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Throughout the history, there had been continuous relationships between cities and their ports. These relations recently have been changing. In many port cities, while heavy industrial functions and freight harbors have been moved out of the former harbor districts, the resulting derelict spaces have been transformed to new waterfront quarters to accommodate commercial, tourism, financial, cultural, residential and public uses with high-quality public spaces by large-scale regeneration schemes through the leadership of public-private partnership to produce new identities for these cities, and ultimately to find new niches or to maintain their places within the global network of port-cities. This thesis, aiming to examine the city-port relation on the case of Izmir, specifically focuses on the recent transformation process of Izmir Harbor District. Based on cultural perspective put forth by Meyer, it first investigates the changing cultural definitions of both the city and the port in three major European cities (London, Barcelona and Rotterdam), as well as the prominent actors which were influential in the planning and design processes of these port transformations. The investigation of three cases with reference to their individual planning contexts and the actors involved in the planning and design processes shows that the possibility of implementation of design approaches is related with the planning culture specific to the context which the practice takes place. Based on this assumption, the investigation of the transformation process of Izmir Harbor District is carried out through Meyer&rsquo / s cultural context with reference to three major topics: development of planning practice, the planning structure and transformation process. The involvement of several actors in the planning and design process and their impacts on both the process and space are particularly examined. The investigation shows that the initial planning process in the district had been conducted with a particular emphasis on urban design issues. The urban design approach in the initial sta ges of the planning process could not be implemented due to a series of reasons resulting from the Turkish planning system. Finally, this research, comparing the case of Izmir with similar recent European examples, underlines the challenges, difficulties, and problems of the transformation process of Izmir Harbor District, and discusses the missing aspects in the Turkish planning system and culture with the help of the gained insights on Izmir.

Comparison Of Dispersive And Non-dispersive Numerical Long Wave Models And Harbor Agitation

Ozbay, Ali 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, the evolution of the numerical water wave models with the theoretical background and the governing equations are briefly discussed and a numerical model MIKE21 BW which can be applied to wave problems in nearshore zone is presented. The numerical model is based on the numerical solution of the Boussinesq type equations formulated on time domain. Nonlinearity and frequency dispersion is included in the model. In order to make comparison between the results of nonlinear shallow water equations with Boussinesq terms, MIKE21 BW and NAMIDANCE are applied to the problem of wave propagation in the long distances and runup on simple and composite slopes. The numerical experiments are applied to Dat&ccedil / a Marina and the results are compared to the results of the physical experiments on wave disturbance in Dat&ccedil / a Marina. In these comparisons the reflection characteristics of different coastal boundaries in the harbor area are tested and the internal parameters in the model are calibrated accordingly. The numerical model MIKE21 BW is applied to skenderun harbor as a case study. The input wave parameters are selected from the wave climate study for Iskenderun Harbor. The model is set up and the agitation inside the harbor is computed according to four different incoming wave scenarios. The disturbance maps inside the harbor for different incoming wave scenarios are obtained. The critical regions v of the harbor according to disturbance under different wave conditions are presented and discussed.

Research of Promotion FTPZ with Key Successful Factors by KHB

Chen, Rong-Shin 03 July 2003 (has links)
Kaoshiung Port had natural advantage of geographical conditions plus adopting the strategy of developing container center in 1970 and also was developed and operated achievement very well in past 20 years for prevailing in containerization. In late 1990, Kaoshiung Port faced internal and external competitive stress because global planning and management affairs were getting in vogue and neighboring countries invested in harbor facilities competitively. By far three years nearly, Kaoshiung Port was in very competitive circumstance and had to adopt seriously some tactic to promote its competition. In 2001, Taiwan government brought up the policy of Free-Trade Port Zone (FTPZ) and intended establishing FTPZ in harbor or airport in order to solicit for propriertors¡¦ investment against the businesses such as exhibition, processing manufacturing and transshipment of storehouse. Due to many examples in growth with high-speed by FTPZ in overseas harbors, KHB respects on this policy very much and strives with all its strength to set up FTPZ in Kaoshiung Port. There are no any precedents of domestic FTPZ in Taiwan. In order to find out the effect of FTPZ to Kaoshiung Port and point for attention and improvement in driving this strategy, following status are found out by this research with collection and discussion on reference sub-data and SWOT analysis of Kaoshiung Port¡¦s competition plus statistical analysis of survey. 1. 71% of persons consider that KHB will promote its advantage in competition and increase container sales revenue to establish FTPZ, extremely 93% of persons think KHB will get much help if government opens direct transportation links with Mainland 2. Following importance of external and internal factors affect whether FTZP will carry out and develop its function: External: Opening up direct transportation links with Mainland, good investment environment, preferential land tax and other levies, efficient clearance, proprietors¡¦ investment will. Internal: advantage of geographical localities, tally with information system of users¡¦ demand, efficient stevedoring, organized system of operation decision-making power, reasonable port tariff, rental and flexible adjustment, respect of customers¡¦ suggestion and high quality service, sufficient container areas 3. In order to apply effectively with restricted resources, now KHB has priority to improve its serviced resources of internal is information system, organized system, selling action, and human resources. Eventually, in order that KHB establishes tactical target of FTPZ effectively, mainly there are some suggestions to two parts, government¡¦s policy-making department and KHB, by this research to pass the bill of FTPZ, open direct transportation links with Mainland, adjust organized system of KHB, improve service system with right remedial steps, reform the rental mode of container harbor, and cooperate with succeeded international harbors or strategic alliance.

An examination of the diet and movement patterns of the atlantic cownose ray rhinoptera bonasuswithin a southwest florida estuary

Collins, Angela Barker 01 June 2005 (has links)
Cownose rays are benthic, suction feeders whose foraging activities have been implicated in severe damage to commercial shellfish industries and seagrass habitat. With jaws highly modified for durophagy, it has been assumed that they are crushing specialists, feeding primarily upon hard molluscan prey. In addition, R. bonasus are believed to be highly migratory, transient residents of coastal inshore waters. However, minimal quantitative data exist regarding R. bonasus feeding or movement patterns in the Gulf of Mexico. Stomach contents from 50 cownose rays caught within the Charlotte Harbor estuary between July 2003 and July 2004 were analyzed using the index of relative importance (IRI). Crustaceans, polychaetes, and bivalves were the dominant groups present, with bivalves representing the smallest proportion of the three dominant groups. High dietary overlap was observed between sexes, size groups and seasons. Shoalmates exhibited significantly more similar diets to each other than to members of other shoals. Although currently believed to be a hard prey specialist, these results suggest the cownose ray may behave as an opportunistic generalist, consuming any readily available prey. Between July 2003 and November 2004, 21 cownose rays were tagged and tracked within Charlotte Harbor using passive acoustic telemetry. Residence time ranged between 1-102 days. No significant relationship was detected between activity patterns and tidal stage or time of day. Minimum convex polygons (MCP) and kernel utilization distributions (KUD) were calculated to demonstrate the extent of an animals home range and core areas of use. Daily MCPs ranged between 0.01 and 25.8 km2, and total MCPs ranged between 0.81 and 71.78 km2. Total 95% KUDs ranged between 0.18 and 62.44 km2, while total 50% KUDs were significantly smaller, ranging from 0.09 to 9.68 km2.

Vardagslivet i hamnen : Djurhamns historia belyst med marinarkeologiskt material

Wiklund, Jonas January 2015 (has links)
Those who today hear the name Djurhamn are maybe first thinking of a summer resort place with sunbathing, swimming and recreational boating activities. Djurhamn has an interesting and fascinating history well intertwined with the history of Sweden. The interesting history was exposed by the Stockholm Sport Diving Club which, during the summers of 1964 and 1965, brought up a large number of finds from the bottom of Djurhamn. The findings could essentially be dated to be in the in the period 1500s to 1700s. Like other parts of the East Coast Djurhamn was hit in "Russian raids" in the early 1700s. The known meetings of warships during the Vasa era and the history of naval ship Riskswasas fate also reflects the interesting parts of Djurhamn history. While working on this, a number of dives were made at the bottom of the basin in Djurhamn. Two side-scan surveys have also been conducted. Overall, this has not resulted in any change of the picture of what's on Djurhamns bottom. A previously unknown wreck that lies south of the cemetery have, however, been located based on information from the public. The finds from the dives during 1964 and 1965 talk about food and drinks, cooking utensils, three-leg pots and bottles speaks their language. Even earlier dated bargain materials speak the same language. It is a place where everyday objects leave imprints on the bottom along with the testimony of a brickyard, which flourished for a short period. Which traces have been left from the naval activities? Practically none. On land there are no naval monuments. The objects which were brought up at the 1960 dives were almost entirely attributable to the applications connected to cooking. Our modern society is a complex reality. There are homes, workplaces, hospitals, places of entertainment, etc. People are born, grow up, grow old and die. What do we find in the signs of the Djurhamn? Well, a picture that much is a reflection of today's society. Also here you are born grown up grown old and finally dead. Heavy drinking has flourished. In addition to self-household and shipping, there has been brick industry and cholera quarantine. Finally, perhaps Djurhamn over time is best described as farmers, fishermen and hungry sailors’ history more than the history of the fleet in the Vasa kings’ service.

Reflections in the dark : Ground-penetrating radar surveys for the detection of Viking Age and early medieval harbor remains in Sigtuna, Sweden

Homeister, Anne January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis a ground-penetration radar survey was carried out in four areas, Borgmästarängen, Draken, Urmakaren and Koppardosan in Sigtuna. The aim of this paper is to detect remnants of the Viking Age harbor at those chosen sites. Former research investigations have discovered findings which are related to shipbuilding like clench nails, rivets and boat nails; however, the question remains whether Sigtuna ever had a central harbor, and researchers suggested instead that every town plot had its own mooring. This paper addresses this question by deploying geophysical surveys to increase the understanding of the town’s organization. Furthermore this paper will discuss how the detected structures can be understood in comparison to earlier Viking Age and early Medieval towns, in this case Birka, Hedeby and Schleswig where central harbors have been discovered and investigated.
