PROPRIÉTÉS AU BORD DES FONCTIONS HARMONIQUES POUR LES DIFFUSIONS, LES PROCESSUS STABLES ET LEURS PERTURBATIONSLuks, Tomasz 12 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Spectral Inequalities and Their Applications in Quantum MechanicsPortmann, Fabian January 2014 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis revolves around spectral inequalities and their applications in quantum mechanics. In Paper A, the ground state energy of an atom confined to two dimensions is analyzed in the limit when the charge of the nucleus Z becomes very large. The main result is a two-term asymptotic expansion of the ground state energy in terms of Z. Paper B deals with Hardy inequalities for the kinetic energy of a particle in the presence of an external magnetic field. If the magnetic field has a non-trivial radial component, we show that Hardy’s classical lower bound can be improved by an extra term depending on the magnetic field. In Paper C we study interacting Bose gases and prove Lieb-Thirring type estimates for several types of interaction potentials, such as the hard-sphere interaction in three dimensions, the hard-disk interaction in two dimensions as well as homogeneous potentials. /
QC 20140520

The songs of Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) to poems by Thomas HardyVan der Watt, Gerhardus Daniël 11 1900 (has links)
This study consists of two volumes. Volume II contains the analysis of fifty-one songs by Gerald
Finzi (1901-1956) to poems by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). The analysis is based on a preconceived
model which focuses on a critical examination of the texts and considers the basic elements of music
in each song. Certain stylistic features are apparent from this study and are reflected in Volume I.
After a biographical sketch of each artist and a discussion of the texts, a sample of the analysis is
presented. The basic elements of music are then discussed: timbre, duration, pitch organization,
dynamics, texture, structure, mood and atmosphere. Volume I concludes with a general statement
on the stylistic features of the composer and considers the artists' genius in the light of the study.
Finzi's setting of such a comparatively large number of Hardy poems is a result of the former's intense
interest in English literature and sympathy with much of Hardy's personal philosophies such as the
uselessness of suffering which fills an indifferent world. Finzi's settings are firmly embedded in tonal
traditions but he explores a great variety of subtle atmospheres within the confines of tonality. The
declamation of the texts is of superior quality and the composer achieves an individual language of
expression unparalleled in the song-writing of the first half of the twentieth century in England / Hierdie studie beslaan twee volumes.
elemente bestudeer is.

Thomas Hardy‟s works are set in a time comprehending the end of nineteenth century and the beginning of twentieth century, a period that not only highlights the end of a historical era and the beginning of a new time, but also characterizes an occasion of change in literary conception. That period in England was representative of the decay of Victorian literature – with moral-based themes inspired in Queen Victoria‟s integrity – and it showed up the first signs of a literary tendency of revealing the image of the divided man, sunk into the process of existential crisis and void of many of his previous certainties. This study presents an examination on Tess of the d‟Urbervilles in order to depict, according to Thomas Hardy‟s point of view, the crisis of values installed in the social order, when capitalism advances over the old feudal institutions in England at that time and sets forth a process of reconsideration of the roles of the individuals in society. The starting point of all this effervescence was the Industrial Revolution and its implications that brought innovation to scientific and cultural realms, disrupting old standards of behaviour and putting human conduct in check. The Victorian society is criticized with irony and many of its habits are taken as hypocrisies in Hardy‟s novel, which ends fatalistically, seeming to portrait man‟s disappointed view about his own destiny in the disturbed world in that time. Tess of the d‟Urbervilles, written under the realist form, was published for the first time in 1891 and it is important to this research because of its double character: it belongs to the canon of Victorian literature and, at the same time, anticipates the modernist theme of the collapse of human solidity. To point out this crisis, we take Raymond Williams‟s position that considers Hardy not simply a regionalist writer exclusively worried with... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Previous issue date: 2012-05-23 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / Suppose that M is a smooth submanifold of CN and that L = ∪z∈CnLz is the Cauchy- Riemann structure associated to the N-dimensional complex space. For each p ∈ M we can consider the vector space Ap = CTpM ∩ Lp. If the reunion of those fibers originates a locally integrable structure, then we are going to say that M is a CR submanifold with CR structure A = ∪p∈MAp. It immediately follows that if h is a holomorphic application defined in a certain neighborhood U ⊃ M, then A(h|M) = 0. If we consider a distribution u ∈ D′(M) such that Au = 0, then one can asks: is there a holomorphic application h defined in certain open set U such that h|M = u? The question, as it is, can be paraphrased as: is there any analytic extension of the CR distribution u? The answer is negative and there are several examples one can create. Consider a quadric application q : Cm × Cm −→ Cd and the manifold given by M = {(w, t) ∈ Cm × Cd,ℑt = q(w,w)}. Boggess has proved in [Bog01] that all Lp CR distributions in M (with p ≥ 1) admit a holomorphic extension to the interior of the convex hull of M. In this work, we are going to address the same question, but we are going to deal with CR distributions that are in hp with p > 0. Since hp(M) = Lp(M) if p > 1, then our result can be understood as an extension of the original Boggess theorem. The main ingredient of your work is a version of the Baouendi-Treves Approximation Theorem.
