The fortifying and destructive power of love in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series

Gani, Safiyyah 03 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore the importance of love in its various manifestations in the lives of the Harry Potter characters and its power to consequently influence the paths that they eventually choose to walk. Love is investigated as the reason behind the choice between good and evil as well as paradoxically both a fortifying as well as a destructive force. Furthermore, it attempts to examine the importance that love plays in the healthy or dysfunctional development of the characters. Numerous philosophies and theories that span two different eras will form the theoretical framework of this research paper. There will be a constant interplay between the theories and the main text, that is, the seven Harry Potter books that together represent the Harry Potter series. Additionally, the author‟s opinion acquired from invaluable fan interviews will be utilized in order to improve the understanding of the characters motivations. The introduction is a brief explanation of key terms and theories that are essential to the exploration of love in the Harry Potter series. The study comprises five chapters. The first three chapters are concerned with the three main manifestations of love represented in the series, namely; parental love, friendship and romance respectively. Chapter Four focuses on the adaptation of the novels into movies and the subsequent result that this has on the depiction of love. Chapter Five highlights the finding of the study conducted. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

Bruwer, Debbie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the importance of a consistent translation strategy in the translation of proper names. Coupled with this is the importance of translators having a sound theoretical knowledge that serves as a foundation for the translation of any given text. These aspects are central to the successful realisation of cultural communication seeing that proper names are one of the most important cultural indicators. First, we looked at the first book in the Harry Potter series as to determine the number of proper names that were translated and how many were not translated. Different translation strategies were then looked at to determine whether there was a purposeful and logical explanation, and motivation behind the manner and degree of translation of the proper names. This was followed by a close comparison between book one and book five as to determine whether the inconsistent use of translation strategies, was consistently applied throughout the series. Central to this study is the necessity of successful cultural communication and how the inconsistent use of certain elements can have a negative impact on the cultural communication in any literary work. To establish successful cultural communication, every translator needs a clear skopos/brief for the target text. As a point of departure I will look at certain concepts such as translation norms, culture and translation as well as various translation strategies. The impact of inconsistent translation strategies on texts will be highlighted throughout this thesis.

De Horgwarts a Paraisópolis: discurso e recepção da obra Harry Potter em um contexto de capitalismo periférico / From Hogwarts to Paraisópolis: discourse and reception of the Harry Potter literary work in a context of peripheral capitalism

Henriques, Marco Polo Ribeiro 24 September 2015 (has links)
The present study aimed to understand how the Harry Potter literary work (Brazilian edition), taking its context of production/dissemination and discourse into account, speaks to Brazilian readers, especially young residents of the Paraisópolis community in São Paulo. It has reconstituted the path taken by the work to reach Paraisópolis community\'s readers, with primary and secondary data collection from both the international and the Brazilian publishing markets. The basis for the theoretical discussion was supported on Communication Studies, historiographical studies, and Reading Sociology, which enable understanding the multiple factors involved in the practice of reading in contemporaneity, nurturing the interdisciplinary dialogue among those areas. For the constitution of the corpus, we analyzed the Brazilian edition of Harry Potter books focusing on elements of reality and ideological models that integrate the narrative, with the support of Bakhtin\'s theories, in an attempt to identify the relations involving the construction of meaning that are established between the speech in the Harry Potter series and contemporary teenage readers. This discursive corpus was used in a survey of the reception of qualitative approach carried out in Paraisópolis community with ten adolescents, spontaneous readers of the referred literary work. Two discussion groups were delimited by demographics such as gender and age, with which we carried out reading and writing sessions, group discussions, group dynamics (plays and games), exhibition of movie clips, and the application of a questionnaire consisting of open- and closed-ended questions about their socioeconomic profile and cultural habits. An in-depth interview was also conducted, with a view to collecting data and speeches that made up material for the analysis of the reception of the referred literary work. Supported by reflections concerning the areas of Communication Studies, Studies of Language, Cultural Studies, especially those dedicated to the Reception Studies, the set of procedures allowed the identification of indicators of uniqueness and cultural diversity of Paraisópolis community\'s readers, in response to hegemonic forms of communication and culture, with ambivalent aspects that challenge the dichotomous opposition inclusion/exclusion. The emergence and the analysis, from Mikhail Bakhtin\'s perspective, of unknown discursive correlations between the Harry Potter literary work and the universe of local experiences of the participants showed their positioning as enunciators, situated at a particular time in a given space, and aware of their responsible participation in the communicative process that goes beyond the limits of cultural reception and defines their particular place in the world.

A Girl's Journey : Hermione Granger's Road towards Independence / En flickas resa : Hermione Grangers väg mot självstädninghet

Hallén, Anna January 2019 (has links)
In this essay, J.K. Rowling’s series about Harry Potter is analyzed by the use of feminist theories and gender studies. The main aim of the essay is to examine how Hermione Granger is portrayed. The analysis is based on three of the novels, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’sstone, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This essay argues that Hermione, in the first novel, is depicted as a stereotyped female character, but that she develops and grows over the course of time, which leads her character to deviate from the traditional gender stereotypes. The results are supported by different examples from the novels, which relate to the used theories and previous research. / I denna uppsats analyseras J.K. Analysen är baserad på tre av romanerna Harry Potter and the Philosopher’sstone, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban och Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

We used 13 ETFs listed on the S??o Paulo Stock Exchange from 01/01/2012 to 04/11/2016 to perform four portfolio optimization and weighting strategies: 1) Model with short sale and leverage restrictions; 2) Portfolios with a maximum position of 30% in each asset; 3) Wallets with a leveraged position, where it is allowed to be sold up to -30% and bought up to 130% in each asset (strategy 130/30); 4) Portfolios where each asset may be short-listed up to a limit of -5%, provided that the maximum percentage sold in the portfolio does not exceed -45%. For each of these strategies, balances were determined in temporal windows of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. In all analyzes, there was no significant difference in terms of return, although naive portfolios (1/N) had marginally higher numbers. Optimized portfolios composed of ETFs in the different strategies presented a significantly lower risk than the naive portfolio of ETFs and the market index. There was no predominance in terms of risk and return in the comparison between naive portfolios composed of ETFs and naive portfolios composed of randomly chosen Stock Investment Funds (FIAs). ETFs feature ease of trading, transparency and economy, and can become an alternative in the composition of the investor's asset portfolio. Livselixir : En studie om Harry Potter, moralisk utveckling, livsfrågor och religionsundervisning / The elixir of life : A study of Harry Potter, moral development, life questions and the teaching of religion

Johansson, Elin January 2015 (has links)
This bachelor's thesis examines three books in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The aim is to increase understanding for what Harry Potter could contribute in terms of morality in religious studies, and how the story about Harry Potter, as a popular literary phenomenon, can be helpful for this. Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development is central to this essay. I have used an hermeneutic method for the analysis of the Harry Potter books. The result shows that the main character, Harry Potter, can be seen as kind of a role model when it comes to moral development. Pupils may benefit by reading this book series because it can open their eyes to life questions and moral values. Identity formation, loyalty and fellowship are issues that the reader will be able to recognize and relate to in the Harry Potter books. Therefore it is relevant to use the Harry Potter books in teaching of religion. Life questions and moral values are also stressed in the syllabus for religious studies in junior high school. Furthermore the character Harry Potter does follow the moral development theory developed by Kohlberg, though it seems like the various stages are not separated, but rather integrated with each other. Harry Potter changes both intellectually and emotionally according to the magical world of Hogwarts school of wizardry and witchcraft.

What do you see? : revaluation of standards and the Harry Potter Saga

Nunes, Lisia Cristina Paiva Nunes January 2010 (has links)
The Harry Potter Books had their first instalment published in 1997 and the last in 2007. The focus of the analysis closes upon three aspects, the journey of the hero, the different approaches to death, and the treatment of dichotomies. As for critical and theoretical support I rely on studies about mythology and the imaginary, especially as presented by Joseph Campbell, on Umberto Eco‟s moral and aesthetic considerations about the connections between the neighbouring realms of Life and Literature, and on Zygmunt Bauman's philosophical approach to our liquid contemporary times. The work is divided into two parts. The first presents the necessary contextualization, poses some hypotheses about the prompt acceptance on the part of the reading public, and exposes the theoretic background on which this thesis is grounded, and establishes the necessary connections with the points investigated. The second part contains my reading of the Harry Potter Books, closing on the three items to be analysed. At the end of this argumentative thesis I hope my analysis may contribute to the discussion about the role the Harry Potter Books play in their contemporary context, and about which of the current paradigms they ratify, question or deny.

The music of Harry Potter: Continuity and change in the first five films

Webster, Jamie Lynn, 1974- 12 1900 (has links)
xx, 800 p. : music. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Despite the immense popular and critical response given to the Harry Potter narrative and phenomenon, little has been written about the music for the Harry Potter films. I establish that the aesthetic differences that viewers perceive between the different Harry Potter films are largely due to the musical approaches of composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper over the course of four director/composer collaborations for the first five films. This study provides a rare opportunity to examine the work of different composers for a continuing narrative. Moreover, when we explore how music is used in varied ways within the films, we see how each musical approach shapes film visuals into the narrative that the filmmakers sought to convey; when the music changes, the story changes. Music creates the geographic, cultural, and temporal landscapes that draw us in to Harry's 'muggle' and magical worlds. Music defines the way we perceive Harry's emotional experiences of love, joy, loss, and death, and also defines the philosophical perspectives on the nature of evil and its conquest. Sometimes, the music provides clues to the mystery long before visuals and dialogue address them, and musical relationships (with visuals and within the music itself) allow us to perceive the properties and powers of magic and humanity that may otherwise transpire unseen. Music also plays a role in the types of humor that are represented in the films--from socially-sanctioned transgressions, to macabre, to bawdy, deadpan, and caricature. However, while the core narrative themes in the films are closely related to the main themes in Rowling's original novels, an examination of how Rowling's descriptions of musical events compare with representations of these events in the films reveals that Rowling created a more nuanced social landscape (especially with regard to gender) than is re-contextualized with music in the films. / Committee in charge: Marian Smith, Chairperson, Music; Anne McLucas, Member, Music; Mark Levy, Member, Music; Carl Bybee, Outside Member, Journalism and Communication

NAGYOVÁ, Helena January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of three literary works, namely Harry Potter series by Joanne Kathleen Rowling, The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson, Groosham Grange and Return to Groosham Grange: The Unholy Grail by Anthony Horowitz. The aim of the theoretical part is to outline the theory of fantasy and also the lives of the three above mentioned authors. The rites of passage and the Gothic tradition are also included in the first, theoretical, part. The aim of the interpretation is to compare the following themes occurring in the discussed works: the journey to the world of fantasy, the picture of the other world and the hero and his opposite. The summary attempts to prove that the discussed works have different messages. In particular, Rowling focuses on morality, Horowitz deals with farce and Ibbotson concentrates on humour.
