In this sense, give emphasis on cultural exchange between Paraguay and Brazil, creating a social network well established. However, it is not any cultural contact, aboard the groups formed by the common interest in a musical genre: Heavy Metal. To accomplish it used the methodology of ethnography, in which the fieldwork lasted about a year and a half, making me present in various spaces and events held involving the group studied. At first the research was to approach the group, analyzing their identity symbolism. In a second moment, bother to analyze the production and maintenance of international social network that is created for the sake of production and consumption of musical style. In this sense, Brazilians and Paraguayans, metal fans - better known as headbangers - come to understand the boundary beyond political and geographical concepts. This group makes different uses of the border and, in moments of identification with the music, may be considered a family, becoming brothers.

Production of a discourse. Invention of a public. The case of a heavy metal band from the East-End of London from 1976 to nowadays.

Petesch, Jean-Philippe 03 April 2009 (has links)
Since 1976, the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden has been working at the production of a musical and lyrical discourse dealing with existential and metaphysical topics inspired by literature, cinema and history. Sales of 80 millions records as well as nearly 2,000 concerts world-wide seem to confirm the public’s keen interest in this kind of writing. This study defines the discourse of the band by means of a dual analysis [electronic and traditional] of the lyrics. It focuses on the themes, leitmotivs and intertextualities that can be found in the songs, and attempts to analyse and measure the different levels of influence of the discourse on the life of 4,476 fans from 70 countries encountered via the Internet.

Machinassiah: heavy metal, alienação e crítica na cultura de massa / Machinassiah: heavy metal, alienation and criticism in mass culture

Sandra Nakamura 06 November 2009 (has links)
Mass culture has been traditionally associated with lack of creativity and alienation, being considered less valuable and interesting than classic and canonic forms of Culture and Art. Its only role in society would be that of a commodity. It would be destined to serve consumption. The aim of our research is to offer a change in the perspective from which we see mass culture. Based on concepts and ideas coming from Postcolonial theories, Social Complexity and Critical Literacy, we can see alienation not as an intrinsic quality of mass culture, but as a construction that is socially produced. Therefore, we work on the hypothesis that, being a construction, alienation can be deconstructed, and culture can be made critical, political, socially interested and interesting. In order to confirm this, heavy metal music, traditionally identified with both cultural and social resistance and disobedience, was taken for analysis. We could, then, observe the different strategies of dissidence adopted by rockers and headbangers, finally concluding that deeper ruptures with alienated conformity emerge from their critical participation in the music culture, in mass culture, and in the consumer society. Final conclusions on this were made after the multimodal analysis of a case, represented by the Swedish band Pain of Salvation.

Subculture as a cultural heritage in a local context : Is the Gothenburg sound visible at the ALM-institutions in Gothenburg?

Emanuelsson, Linda, Emanuelsson, Stina January 2016 (has links)
Through questionnaires answered by the institutions and through searches on their various websites, an image is developing that shows that subcultures are not always given room in the cultural heritage sphere. Even though the Gothenburg sound plays a big part within the metal world, and despite the fact that it has given Gothenburg international recognition within the metal community, it remains more or less invisible in Gothenburg’s institutionalized world, both as a subculture and as a cultural heritage. With this essay, we are trying to create a perspective where an eventual explanation for this absence can be given, and where we can raise and problematize these questions. We are trying to illustrate the dominance of the mainstream society compared to subcultures, but also the institutions influence in what qualifies as a cultural heritage. We want to gain an understanding if the Gothenburg sound can be seen as a cultural heritage and if the genre should be made more visible within the institutions. In the end though, the question remain whether it would benefit the subculture to be made visible in the mainstream arena as they through such an uplifting also risk to lose their subcultural identity.

Iconografia, simbolismo e a cultura contemporânea do Heavy Metal

Fiore, Adriano Alves 18 December 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:15:31Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Adriano Alves Fiore.pdf: 8707884 bytes, checksum: 49a8cb655444e751c7263a2fab1972a5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-12-18 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / It has been approximately 45 years since heavy metal began attracting multitudes of faithful followers in Brazil and the rest of the world. This study centers on the postulation that the genre s sound combined with its grotesque and baroque iconography is able to produce a contemporary world culture and that it requires continuous research to find its most precise description. The phenomenon is analyzed principally in light of the Bakthinian theory of carnivalization, which has received the addition of the methodological path traced by means of exploratory studies, as well as the author s direct in situ participation in festivals such as Rock in Rio, Wacken Open Air and Monsters of Rock. Both documental and bibliographic researches centered on the reading of images. The corpus includes images from photographs, newspapers, websites, blogs, paintings, t-shirts, posters, comic books, books, encyclopedias, movies, documentaries, animation and LP, CD, DVD, Blu-ray and VHS covers, as well as dress, makeup and hairstyle in short, the complete heavy metal imaginarium. The focus is of a diachronic-synchronic nature and features in the history of the heavy metal genre. The problematization involves the following question: What are the main pictorial and symbolic elements produced by the music industry that provoke such intense, notoriously impassioned devotion in heavy metal dilettantes and how do they achieve their purpose with such efficacy? It is further postulated that the intense sound of heavy metal emanates an interior sensation of force and superhuman power in its fans that transforms into a type of unlimited love and exacerbated fidelity (i.e. an almost absolute dependency), which is commensurate with a group, collective or social demand for protection. Results allow for the conclusion that by being conscious of this idiosyncrasy, illustrators, designers and advertisers have striven to perpetuate an iconographic and symbolic universe equally intense, robust and intimidating in which Bakhtin s key carnivalizing motifs can be found (Death, masquerade, good/evil dualism, hyperbolism, the grotesque, Hell, the laugh, hybridization, metamorphosis, the banquet, insanity and antithesis) / Há 45 anos, aproximadamente, o heavy metal vem atraindo multidões de seguidores fiéis em todo o mundo, e esse é também um fenômeno contínuo no Brasil.

The role of legislation in driving good occupational health and safety management systems: A comparison of prescriptive based legislation.

Kim, Jeong - Ah January 2004 (has links)
Countries seek to control exposure to hazardous substances and environments by the enactment of legislation. In the past thirty years, two major different approaches to occupational health and safety legislation have been devleoped by countries around the world. The performance-based legislative approach has been linked with the emergence of occupational health and safety management systems but no research has previously been done to determine whether or not the legislative approach taken by government influences the introduction or form of occupational health and safety management systems used by organisations. Similarly, although the reasons why Australia and other countries have moved to performance-based legislation have been explained in terms of social, political and economic factors that influenced the change, little research has been done on the effectiveness of this approach compared with the prescriptive approach of countries such as Korea. -I- The overall aim of this research is to develop a conprehensive understanding of the management of expusre to heavy metals in selected industries in Korea and Australia. The specific objectives of the study are to determine: The effectiveness of heavy metal exposure management in the fluorescent lamp manufacturing industry in Korea, and an Oral Health Service, and lead-risk workplaces in Queensland, Australia; The management of the legislative arrangements for health surveillance in Korea and Queensland, Australia; The characteristics of the occupational health and safety management systems that are in use in the heavy metal industries in Korea in Australia; and The effectiveness of prescriptive and performance based legislative systems in protecting the health and safety of workers in heavy metal based industries. Secondary analysis of biological monitoring data from 6 fluorescent lamp manufacturing companies (8 workplaces) in Korea was used to examine the extent of mercury exposure and the effectiveness of the health surveillance system in that country. A survey of dental workers in an oral health service in Queensland provided data on the extent of mercury exposure to the workforce and workers' attitudes to the management of occupational risks. The efficiency of the lead health surveillance in Queensland was examined by way of a questionnaire survey of lead designated doctors in the state. A survey of registered lead-risk companies and the oral health servies in Queensland, and 5 of the fluorescent lamp manufacturing companies in Korea provided data on the occupational health and safety management systems in place in these organisations. The health surveillance system for mercury exposed workers in Korea was found to have reduced the incidence of workers with biological levels of mercury above the Baseline Level from 14% in 1994 to 7% in 1999. Bilogical testing of dental workers in Queensland discovered no workers with biological levels of mercury approaching the Baseline Level and air monitoring failed to locate any areas where workers were likely to be exposed to levels approaching the Workplace Exposure Standard. The staff of the Oral Health Service were generally aware of the occupational health and safety management systems in place but only 43% felt that mercury management in the workplace effectively prevented exposure. The lead surveillance system in Queensland was found to be inadequately managed with approximately 37% of registered doctors no longer practicing in the field and their being no way for the government to collect reliable data on the extent of lead exposure in workplaces. The occupational health and safety management systems in the companies surveyed in Queensland and Korea were found to be influenced by the legislative arrangements in place in each of the locations. The Korean systems were more geared to meeting the regulatory requirements whereas the Queensland systems were geared more towards a risk management approach. However substantial differences were also noted depending on the size of the organisation in each case. Legislative arrangements in Korea and Queensland were found to provide reasonable protection from heavy metal exposure to workers however improvements in both systems are needed. The legislation was also found to influence the occupational health and safety management systems in place with performance-based legislation producing systems having a wide risk management focus while a narrower regulatory based focus was noted in Korea where more prescriptive legislation is in force. A confounding factor in the nature of the occupational health and safety management system in place is the size of the organisation and particular attention needs to be paid to this when legislative approaches are considered.

Whiplash.net : estilo de vida e investimento afetivo de fãs no heavy metal brasileiro

Santos, Jefferson Dantas 21 June 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze how a site developed, nurtured and consumed by heavy metal fans can have an empowering character. For this, we analyze the Whiplash.net, the most trusted specializing in heavy metal in Portuguese. Theoretically we left assertions of authors like Henri Jenkins, John Fiske, Lawrance Grossberg and Michel de Certeau to show how the action of fans can reverse the logic of consumption prescribed by cultural industries and create new meanings from their everyday life and their interests. Such action is possible due to their affective investment in relation to its object of worship, process which is here understood as active reception process, not only because relativize cultural and media hierarchies, but also generates socialization and conflicts within the lifestyle.
