Finding Voice, The Body Speaks: Original Work and Counter-Hegemonic Performance and Practice

Thornton, Matthew Paul 01 January 2017 (has links)
Graduate study in theatre has allowed me to understand my work as an artist and educator from a critical academic perspective. I have researched Butoh as a model for original work that employs multiculturalism against hegemonic control of personal identity. From my own training experience, I am recognizing Capoeira, Contact Improvisation, and Devising processes (co-creation or collaborative creative process in dance) as counter-hegemonic forms and techniques that share a physical/philosophical emphasis on communal engagement, improvisation, circularity and repetition. Looking at them together provides points of intersection for me to examine them as an artist, while posing questions for cross-cultural investigations. In this process, it has been crucial to consider my personal relationship with these forms along with the aesthetics and values associated with them, their potential use in academic contexts, and their support as practices to match theoretical discourse towards a pluralistic and multicultural society.

"Believe me, past a certain age, a man without a family can be a bad thing!"

Hurtig, Michael, Arvidsson, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims at identifying, through Will Wright methods of narrative analysis, how the different masculinities are represented in the first season of the TV-series True Detective via the protagonists Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Theories about hegemonic masculinity and Will Wright's theories for narrative analysis are further applied to see how these similarities and differences are formed by what Wright calls “the professional plot". Through 32 chosen scenes from the first season, this study examines the narrative of True Detective and the relationship between the main characters Rust Cohle and Marty Hart from a point of view that will highlight their hierarchic positions in the hegemonic masculinity, using Raewyn Connell’s studies as a theory. We have found that there are two separate hegemonic spheres, one within the relationship between the main characters, and one within the society as a whole. In the latter, Marty Hart is displayed as a member of the hegemonic masculinity up to the point where he loses his family while Rust Cohle constantly belongs to the subordinate masculinity. This is due to him being in constant clash with the traditional cultural values of Louisiana where the series takes place. Regarding the hegemony within their relationship, Rust Cohle goes through a hegemonic transformation, from the subordinate masculinity to the hegemonic while Marty Hart makes the journey from occupying the hegemonic masculinity to serve as the participating dito.

Men in blue : an ethnographic study of masculinities in a supply chain company

Rivoal, Haude 12 March 2018 (has links)
From a participatory observation survey conducted in a logistics company, from head office to warehouses, this work aims to study the social construction of masculinities at and through work. The history of Transfrilog was built through a family culture forged around the paternalistic management of self-taught employees. Today, having become the company's senior executives, the professionalization of the sector now compels them to deal with young graduates from supply chain training whose management style stands out from the traditional forms of expression of masculinity and authority. In these conditions, how does masculinity perpetuates its hegemony? The thesis aims to show that the capacity of hegemonic masculinity to (re)produce itself is due to a process of hybridization. The thesis also shows the coexistence of a plurality of hegemonic masculinities specific to each sector (transport, logistics, support functions) and which are hierarchized between themselves. However, the mobilization around a virile ideal specific to the productive injunctions and to the intensification of the tasks proposes a common reference to men, beyond divisions of class, race and different trades of the logistic chain. Also, and despite the desire of some leaders to initiate a reflection on professional equality, the hybridity of hegemonic masculinity asks only marginally a gendered distribution of jobs and the unequal scale of value between different forms of masculinities.

Hålén, Matilda, Vad-Schütt, Linda January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to increase understanding of how masculinities and femininities exhibit within a group of men. This was done in the hashtag #pappaledig on the social network Instagram. Variations and patterns were examined in relation to gender stereotyped norms. A semiotic image- and text analysis was used to answer the study's purpose and questions. The terms masculinities and femininities were used as an integrated analysis unit for the purpose of departing from sex dichotomy. The main results of the study showed that the majority of men's images could be interpreted masculine while the texts showed a more feminine or mixed character. In relation to Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity, the hegemonic ideals appear to be reproduced in the tougher and less expressive images while a softer and more emotional character could be seen in the captions. The more disposal character of the texts could be related to modern paternity.

As orientações educativas contra-hegemônicas das décadas de 1980 e 1990 e os rebatimentos pós-modernos na didática a partir da visão de estudiosos / Counter-hegemonic educative orientations in the decades of 1980 and 1990, and post-modern impacts on the didactic field according to some scholars point of view.

Faria, Lenilda Rego Albuquerque de 15 June 2011 (has links)
This research aims at analyzing the scientific validity of the counter-hegemonic didactic-pedagogic approach developed in the decades of 1980 and 1990, in view of the disputes brought out by the postmodern way of thinking. In pursuing this objective, it seeks to answer the core question that guides the investigation: How are the scholars who fostered the movement for a critic didactic and had their epistemological bases grounded on the Marxism dialectic treating the questions posed by postmodernity, since its assumptions bring into question the main theses defended by dialectical historical materialism, with direct epistemological and praxticiological implications to the fields of pedagogy and didactic? Also a secondary question is posed: Is there an epistemological shift from a critical didactic to a post-modern didactic? The development of the theme comprises a theoretical study of the relevant bibliography and analyzes of interviews carried out with four representative scholars in the didactic field, namely, José C. Libâneo, Maria Rita N. S. Oliveira, Selma G. Pimenta, and Vera M. F. Candau; here the theoretical-methodological assumptions are Marxs theory of the Social Being, his dialectical method, and pedagogy seen as a science of, and for, educative praxis, and didactic seen as a theory of teaching in its concrete wholeness. As for the dialectical method, the references used are Marx (1979, 1988a, 2007), Lukács (1979, 2007), Kosik (1995), Kopnin (1978), Paulo Netto (2006, 2009) and Frigotto (2006); for pedagogy and didactic considerations, the references are Saviani (2005b, 2006, 2007b, 2008a), Libâneo (200a, 2008), Pimenta (2000, 2001, 2005), and Oliveira (1991, 1992). In the attempt to capture the mediations of the object under investigation, the post-modern way of thinking is discussed from the perspective presented by Harvey (1993), Eagleton (1998), Jameson (2004), and Anderson (2004); to support the concept of post-modernity chosen reference is made to Wood and Foster (1999) and Paulo Netto (2010). The research highlights the following nuclear categories: counter-hegemonic pedagogies, hegemony, post-modernity, critic, praxis, science, education, culture, pedagogy and didactic. The results show that, in relation to the research question, for all the interviewed scholars critical didactic is not changing into post-modern didactic, but they concede that some of the post-modern ideas are already present in the area of didactic. As for the manner those didactic scholars deal with the theoretical framework, there are indications that they consider that critical didactic, especially the segment inspired by Marxism, is important and has contributions, and is still valid in present days; this position is shared by Libâneo, Oliveira, and Pimenta. Also there are signs that those three professors have different forms of approaching Marx´s theory, and particularly Candau favors an intercultural critic didactic in the debate with opposing postmodern ideas. The research supports the validity and pertinence of the counter-hegemonic position launched in the 1980s and attacked by the post-modern trend along the 1990s. It also highlights the necessity and validity of the history-critical pedagogy due to its objectivity in human formation, one of its tenets in the reflection on education and labor. The task of didactic is to contribute with the development of teachers pedagogical consciousness. In the teaching situation the final goal of the educative process is to raise students comprehension from the syncretic level to the level of synthesis.

Rättvis, tillrättavisande och sympatisk : En studie om manliga lärarstudenters relation till sitt framtida yrke / Fair, correct and sympathetic : - - a study on male teacher students and the relationship with their future profession

Gustafsson, Philip January 2019 (has links)
The gender balance in Swedish preschool and elementary schoolteachers is highly uneven. Male preschool and elementary schoolteachers consist of only 4% and 25% respectively. The study’s motivation is found here. The aim is to get knowledge of the way male students at university who are studying to become preschool or elementary schoolteachers use and take benefit of existing male discourses and if they make opposition on these discourses. By the use of qualitative interviews, the material in this study is based on subjective views and experiences of male students doing gender in the context of a female-dominated space of study and anticipated future career. Within a broader social constructive approach, the empirical material is analyzed by the use of Connell’s theory on gender and hegemonic masculinity. Other theoretical concept that have been used in this study to display and analyze the way the students are doing gender are such as “male discourses” and “masculinity”. The result of this study suggest that male students are not giving up their use of male discourses, instead they are constructing a new role in relation to their future profession and existing discourses. They construct their profession roles in relation with their use of existing male discourses as well as opposition towards them, as well as the use of female discourses. The result of this study suggest that male students are in some cases using existing male discourses in relation to their profession, but that they are also using active resistance towards these discourses with the use of female discourses. These results go mostly in line with results presented by earlier studies in the field. The students are negotiating with the hegemonic masculinity in the way they are constructing their professional role as teachers and role models.

Processos urbanos de patrimonialização mundial: espaços de contradição e ressignificação dos tecidos urbanos patrimoniais / World patrimonialization urban processes - spaces of contradiction and resignification of heritage urban fabrics

Maisa Fonseca de Almeida 08 March 2017 (has links)
As part of the debate on the production of the urban space of the contemporary city, this research analyzes to what extent the processes of global patrimonialization governed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its developments are or are not in conformity with hegemonic processes of production of the city. In this field of disputes and conflicts we verify the transversality and the phenomena of a process linked to a logic of reproduction of capital and to the mercantile consumption of cities. In this sense, its understanding allows us to unveil aspects of the financial reproduction of capital in urban space, and responds to the hypothesis that this work presents, that is the traditional urban fabrics of the city are deconstituted of their meaning when recreating new urban articulations that intensify and reduce complex realities in the face of its patrimonial processes governed by UNESCO\'s international assistance and cooperation. Such a process of resignification, through the dissolution of the physical, historical and socio-cultural conditioning factors that dynamically constitute the identity of the traditional urban fabrics of the cities, may result in contradictions in relation to the articulation of the so-called cultural goods for their local contexts and in the dissolution of identity and cultural relations of the place. Thus, considered as an issue that pervades the heritage, this work analyzes, as a case study, the recent and ongoing classification process of the Ver-o-Peso (BR) and presents as a counterpoint the world heritage of the University of Coimbra (PT). This analysis seeks to question and verify the conditions and processes in the city that can lead both to the creation of simplified spaces of meaning, before a process of homogenization of culture, and preservation actions at national and international level, mainly related to an international multilateral agency for the preservation of heritage that corroborate this process. In this way, the research is part of discussions about the process of production of the urban space of the city related to interventions in heritage and the preservation of historical sets of cities, contributing particularly to evaluate the role of classification processes to cities\' world heritage in the protection and preservation of cultural heritage.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Adolf Deny Motter Florencio.pdf: 3580659 bytes, checksum: 000c169ce7090a5274da9d307256ae5b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-09-05 / We tried to analyze in this work the MCMV Entities program as a fighting chance to counter-hegemonic. So we share the view that there is a neoliberal hegemony that is generating social and environmental injustices as ever existed as to endanger the survival of our civilization in the coming decades. However we also observed that there is a growing anti-hegemonic struggle ongoing, unprecedented way. Numerous social and environmental movements are linked in networks with various connections, local and global, virtual or not. Many organizations can have global presence enabling building a global civil society. The social movement of housing is articulated with this set of networks as comprising housing in its broadest form and the roots of its precariousness. In this process the Minha Casa Minha Vida Entities arises through the claim of these movements as a form of self-management of housing. The construction of housing projects managed by social movements makes new spaces of struggle and coexistence arise and create new possibilities of social organization. Two housing projects in this mode carried out by the Housing Cooperative of Araras, housing institution headquartered in Campinas and linked to CMP (Central of Popular Movements) were chosen for our study / Analisamos neste trabalho o programa Minha Casa Minha Vida Entidades, criado no Governo do Presidente Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, em março de 2009, como uma possibilidade de luta contra-hegemônica.

A construção do Estado chavista: a influência bolivariana

Feitosa, Nabupolasar Alves 28 March 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T20:21:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Nabupolasar Alves Feitosa.pdf: 2444286 bytes, checksum: 64741c3bf7f88964eef9b1af8d5af923 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-03-28 / The present work, entitled The construction of the chavista State: the bolivarian influence, was done with the aim of analysing the process by which the political ideas produced in the past by Simón Bolívar were recovered and instrumentalized by Hugo Chávez under new historical circumstances. With the use of Simón Bolívar s historical figure as justification for his acts, Hugo Chávez s governing style varied in such a manner that it was possible to identify three periods during the 14 years as leader of the Venezuelan State. In each of theses periods, the way Chávez used the State to relate himself with society changed, and eventually He constructed what is called here the chavista State. The leading hypothesis in this work asserts that Chávez, using Bolívar as justification, took a political track in a growing dispute that ended up by creating a strong State, capitalist, socially oriented, with great concentration of Power in Hugo Chávez s hands, and with persecution against political adversaries or anyone that could oppose the chavista power project. To go through this hypothesis, a qualitative research was done, based also on many official data about the economic and social situation in Venezuela, besides a broad bibliographical research. The thesis holds its fundaments in Karl Marx's The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon, in the understanding of bonapartism, which characterizes the chavista way of acting, and Nico poulantzas State, Power, Socialism, that offers a theory about the substitution of the power block as a result of the struggles between the class fractions. This way, with the study of Simón Bolívar s political thinking and Hugo Chávez s political formation and his acts as president of the Republic, it became clear that in Venezuela there was no revolution, for the capitalist characteristics remain in the Venezuelan economy, and the taking of the State by the working class did not occur, but only an exchange of the power block, with the military predominance as a hegemonic class. As a result of Hugo Chávez s phisical disappearence, the decadence of the chavista State started, with a tendency to extinction, due to the absence of Chávez s charisma, his ability to reconcile inner interests inside the chavista movement, and because of the economic crisis which devastates the country / O presente trabalho, intitulado A construção do Estado chavista: a influência bolivariana, foi realizado com o objetivo de analisar o processo pelo qual as idéias políticas produzidas no passado por Simón Bolívar foram recuperadas e instrumentalizadas por Hugo Chávez sob novas circunstâncias históricas.
