However, when we speak of myth, we understand that this is completely timeless, present since the beginning of time, the Universe's creation to the present time. This research aims to contribute to the various ways that the study of the myth may have for the various ways the hero can be represented and what is its connection with the reader of this work. In our research, we understand the importance of Eurico, o presbítero of Alexandre Herculano in modernity and which paths led the author to write a book to tell the struggle of a people for freedom of their nation. For this, we seek historical sources of the creator of the novel in his own Booklets and his History of Portugal. Our methodology was based on critical works. We began our work with the context of the historical moment in which the novel was created, which are the social, political and economic (Saraiva and Lopes, Arnold Hauser); the historical moment in which the novel is narrated (Jacques Le Goff, Andrew Perry and Edward Gibbon); in the study of Romanticism (José Augusto França, Alberto Ferreira) and for the study of myth, we first made its context, then analyzed the symbols present in the work and their meanings, the characteristics of the hero, his journey, threshold and return (Joseph Campbell and Mircea Eliade). We therefore defend that the author in addition to write a story that was the first in its style of Romanticism in Portugal also aimed to not only be a guardian of memory, but also to encourage the creation of a new Portuguese identity. / Novos autores, novos romances e novos pensamentos podem fazer com que os romances do século XIX pareçam ultrapassados. Entretanto, ao falarmos de mito, entendemos que este é completamente atemporal, estando presente desde o início dos tempos, da criação do Universo até o momento presente. Esta pesquisa visa contribuir para os mais diversos caminhos que o estudo do mito pode ter, para as diversas formas que o herói pode ser representado e qual é a sua ligação com o leitor desta obra. Em nossa pesquisa, buscamos compreender a importância da obra Eurico, o presbítero de Alexandre Herculano na modernidade e quais caminhos levaram o autor para compor um livro que contasse a luta de um povo pela liberdade de sua nação. Para isso, buscamos fontes históricas do próprio criador da obra em seus Opúsculos e na sua História de Portugal. Nossa metodologia baseou-se em obras críticas. Iniciamos nosso trabalho com a contextualização do momento histórico em que a obra foi criada, sendo estes o social, político e econômico (Saraiva e Lopes, Arnold Hauser); no momento histórico em que a obra é narrada (Jacques Le Goff, Andrew Perry e Edward Gibbon); no estudo do Romantismo (José Augusto França, Alberto Ferreira) e para o estudo do mito, primeiramente fizemos sua contextualização, em seguida, analisamos os símbolos presentes na obra e seus significados, as características do herói, sua jornada, limiar e retorno (Joseph Campbell e Mircea Eliade). Defendemos, portanto, que o autor além que escrever uma história que foi marco do Romantismo em Portugal, tinha ainda como objetivo não apenas ser um guardião da memória, mas também de incentivar a criação de uma nova identidade portuguesa.

A dissertação visa uma análise mais detalhada da narrativa “Acauã”, por ser aquela que reúne um número significativo de características fantásticas. Para desenvolver este trabalho, utilizou-se, como suporte teórico, principalmente, o búlgaro Tzvetan Todorov, que compreende o fantástico como um gênero proveniente de fatores que contrariam os fenômenos regidos por leis naturais, o que propicia dúvidas acerca desses fatores. Em decorrência disso, busca-se a compreensão em gêneros vizinhos, quais sejam: o estranho e / ou maravilhoso. Será ainda utilizado o estudo proposto pela francesa Irène Bessière, que entende o relato fantástico amparado em padrões socioculturais para fomentar o entendimento da imbricação dos dois campos: o natural e o sobrenatural. O trabalho está dividido em quatro capítulos: o primeiro traz algumas informações sobre a vida de Inglês de Sousa, um curto panorama do Realismo/Naturalismo e a estruturação do cânone; o segundo é constituído de uma visão conceitual tanto do fantástico quanto dos índices de estranhamento insertos no texto literário; o terceiro põe em evidência as obras de Sousa, como exemplo de literatura marcada pelo fantástico e pelo imaginário, e uma teia narrativa, cujo centro é o conto “Acauã”, além de uma comparação entre a narrativa “Acauã” de Sousa e a de Nery; e o quarto capítulo consiste em uma proposta de análise do conto fantástico “Acauã” sob a reflexão de Felipe Furtado. / The purpose of this dissertation is to promote a study about the fantastic and the imaginary inserted into narratives that compose the book Contos Amazônicos, first published in 1893 and republished in 2005 by the Universidad Federal do Para. In this work, the author obi dense, Herculean Marcos Ingles de Souza values the Amazonian mythology, to highlight legends of big snake, of actual bird, of taka, of boot and fear of the people who live in regions bordering the Amazon rainforest, scenery of fantastical occurrences. The dissertation aims at a more detailed analysis about the narrative Akaka, for be the one that gathers an important number of fantastic features. To develop this work, we will use as the theoretical support, especially the Bulgarian Tzvetan Todorov, that comprises the fantastic as a genre that comes from factors that do not occur only through natural laws, what provides doubts about these factors, As a result this seeks to understand in neighboring genres which are weird and/or wonderful. Will also be used the study proposed by the Frenchwoman Irène Bessière, who understands the fantastic report, supported in social and cultural standards to promote the understanding of imbrication of the two fields: The natural and supernatural. The work is divided into four chapters: the first brings some information about the life of English de Sousa, a short panorama of Realism / Naturalism and the structuring of the canon. The second shows the conceptual view of fantastic genre as long as the imaginary and the indices of estrangements inserted in the literary text. The third puts in evidence the works of Sousa as an example of literature marked by fantastic and the imaginary, and a web narrative, whose center is the tale "Acauã” besides a comparison between the narrative "Acauã" of Sousa and Nery. And the fourth chapter consists of an analysis of the proposal fantastic tale "Acauã", the reflections of Felipe Furtado.

Mais do que tentar apreender como o romance histórico incorpora o passado, cabe, aqui, compreender como este se torna objeto de apresentação e de representação artística, uma vez que é valor que está submetido aos critérios de verdade e realidade de quem produz e de quem lê a obra artística que, por si só, já é objeto específico da criação humana. Como forma de oferecer respaldo às nossas reflexões e de estimulá-las, entraremos em contato com duas obras específicas de dois autores portugueses, uma do século XIX, Eurico, o presbítero, de Alexandre Herculano, outra do XX, História do cerco de Lisboa, de José Saramago. A intenção, aqui, é analisar como, por meio de duas obras distantes no tempo mas como a mesma preocupação de utilizar a história como parte da matéria-prima de suas composições, a ficção pode estimular a multiplicação de sentidos e de reflexões a respeito do que é verdadeiro, do que é real e do que é humano. A um questionamento paulatino da história segue-se um questionamento crescente a respeito do próprio estatuto do pensamento humano e da criação literária enquanto objeto de conhecimento. / The aim of this work is to establish a discussion in which both, fiction and history, are emphasized but also establish the changes of subject conceptions and of reality throughout the time since Descartes, going through Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Foucault. More than trying to apprehend how the historical novel incorporates the past, it is also vital to comprehend how it becomes object of presentation and artistic representation since it is value that is submitted to veracity and reality criteria of those who create and of those who read the artistic piece that is specific object of human creation by itself. As a way to offer backup and to stimulate our reflections we will work with two specific pieces of two Portuguese authors, one of them dates from the XIX century, Eurico, the Presbyter (Eurico, o Presbítero), by Alexandre Herculano, the other dates from the XX century, The History of the Siege of Lisbon (História do Cerco de Lisboa), by José Saramago. The intention here is to analyse how, through both pieces distant in time, but sharing the same concern to use history as part of the raw material of their pieces, fiction can stimulate the multiplication of senses and reflections concerning what is true from what is real and from what is human. From a gradually questioning on history, it follows an increasing questioning concerning the own statute of human thought and of literary creation as knowledge object.

Diferentemente do que dá a entender a tradição crítica, que privilegia somente algumas facetas da obra dos dois autores acima referidos, num campo valorativo especificamente literário, Garrett ocupa um lugar fundador não apenas por inaugurar a narrativa de atualidade em Portugal, e sim por ser um dos instauradores da prosa burguesa. Do mesmo modo, a importância de Herculano não pode reduzir-se ao fato de ele introduzir a ficção histórica no seu país, pois o seu papel, assim como o de Garrett, é decisivo na elaboração da prosa moderna em vernáculo. Outro ponto enfocado nesta tese é a constituição do público do romance, na primeira fase do romantismo lusitano, para o que Garrett e Herculano, acompanhando a valorização, ao longo dos séculos XVIII e XIX, da função educativa da forma romanesca, contribuíram com uma verdadeira pedagogia da leitura por meio da construção da narrativa ficcional / Abstract: The present work studies the origins of modern prose in the Portuguese language, the emergence of the novel as a genre in Lusitanian lands, and, as mediation, the impact of the discourse of Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano on subsequent Lusiphone narrative. Differently from what comes to light in the critical tradition, which privileges only some facets of the oeuvre of the two above cited authors within a specifically evaluative literary field, Garrett occupies a founding place not only for inaugurating the narrative of the present time in Portugal, but also as one of the founders of the bourgeois prose. In a similar way, the importance of Herculano cannot be reduced to the fact that he introduces the historical fiction in his country, as he plays a decisive role, as well as Garrett, in the elaboration of modern prose in the vernacular. Another point focused on here is the creation of a reading public for the novel during the first phase of the Portuguese Romanticism, to which Garrett and Herculano, by means of the construction of fictional narrative, contribute a true pedagogy of reading, which accompanies the valorization of the educational function attributed to the Romanesque form throughout the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries / Doutorado / Literatura Portuguesa / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

In Portugal, as in other countries, a common characteristic of many of the novels published in the past twenty years is the recourse to a repertoire of literary devices that recall those of the historical novel.                 On the basis of critical studies published in the 1990’s, and in particular Fernández Prieto’s Poética de la Novela Histórica, this thesis undertakes a study of the Portuguese historical novel with the aim of defining, to the extent possible, the limits of this literary genre, and to examine in detail some of its intrinsic—and pertinent—semantic and pragmatic traits: the setting of a fictional narrative in the past, the introduction of historical persons and events and, not the least, the transtextual relationship between the fictional and the historiographic text.        Special attention is given to some of the more innovative forms of the contemporary historical novel, to highlight how by emphasising certain generic traits —that refer to the reader’s acquired knowledge— the author can compensate for the absence of others. Despite the inherent ”heterodoxy”, this device justifies grouping these novels under the general heading of the historical novel. The thesis explores the analogies between some of these innovative narrative strategies of the contemporary historical novel with transtextual practices characteristic of literature predating the 19th Century and by which a certain ”historical knowledge” is requisite for decoding the text. The thesis also establishes a set of generic traits that the historical novel shares with epic poetry. In light of these analogies, the thesis proposes a reading of Os Lusíadas as a historical poem. With this the author hopes to provide a contribution to a theory of historical fiction, understood as a genre encompassing, in addition to the novel, all forms of fictionalisation that rely on the historical discourse. © Mauro Cavaliere                                           ISBN  91-7265-442-2
