The role of learners in the management of discipline in urban secondary schools in Kwazulu-NatalSubbiah, Charmaine 30 November 2004 (has links)
Since 1994 the South African government has implemented principles of equity, redress and social empowerment in broader society and in education. Consequently, corporal punishment was banned in schools and new methods of managing discipline were introduced. Moreover, decision-making power is decentralised to School Governing Bodies on which learner representatives serve in secondary schools. Thus, the latter are also involved in the management of discipline. This study explores the learners' role in the management of discipline in urban secondary schools in KwaZulu-Natal. Current perspectives on school discipline and an overview of the learners' role in discipline management in the South African context were provided. A qualitative investigation used interviews with learners and educators in selected schools to collect data. Findings suggest that learner involvement in discipline can be positive but lack of training and poor communication impede the full deployment of learners in this regard. A study of the attitudes of English-speaking high school pupils in Gauteng towards Afrikaans-speaking teachers teaching through the medium of EnglishMac Carron, Ciaran Michael 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of learners at English-medium schools towards teachers whose home language was Afrikaans and who taught through the medium of English. A secondary objective was to determine whether the teacher's home language had any effect on the learners' academic performance in the subject concerned.
It was found that English-speaking learners had a slightly negative attitude to Afrikaans and did not give English much consideration except as a useful means of communication. Afrikaans-speaking learners expressed a positive attitude to - and pride in - their language. They were also much more positive to English than were the English-speaking learners towards Afrikaans.
The English-speaking learners' attitude towards Afrikaans was not generally carried over to Afrikaners. However they objected to being taught English by non-English-speakers.
Gender appeared to play a role in the learners' attitudes, as the girls were generally more positive to Afrikaans than the boys and achieved higher marks than the boys in almost all the subjects covered in this study
The academic performance of learners at the English-medium schools was adversely affected by having Afrikaans-speaking teachers since, in almost every case, the learners in these teachers' classes obtained lower marks than those who were taught by English-speaking teachers.
The principal recommendation arising from this study is that, where possible, the teachers at English-medium schools should be English L1 speakers. / Linguistics / M.A. (Sociolinguistics)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the misconduct of learners in secondary schools in the Ntoane village.
It served to determine the
• extent to which teenage fall pregnant;
• the intensity in which teachers tackle gender violence in schools;
• the manner in which the parents’ culture and values are enforced by the teachers.
Recommendations are made on how to overcome these barriers and to improve the level of misconduct.
A literature study was carried out to gain an understanding of misconduct, and covered the following issues:
• What is misconduct?
• The causes of misconduct.
• An overview of learner misconduct.
• The origins of learner misconduct.
• Manifestations of learner misconduct in the classroom.
• The factors which cause learner misconduct.
A qualitative research method was used in this research. The targeted population groups are teenagers in grades 9 and 10 in the Ntoane village.

Interviews were conducted at two schools in the Ntoane village where educators, the school governing bodies and members of the representative council of learners were interviewed.

Managing learner aggression in rural secondary schools in the Empangeni District of KwaZulu-NatalSingh, Gunam Dolan 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and consequences of learner aggression in rural secondary schools in the Empangeni District of KwaZulu-Natal. The study also sought to establish the management strategies required to manage learner aggression in rural secondary schools. An in-depth literature study was conducted in this regard. A qualitative research design and methodology was adopted to investigate the phenomenon through an interview process with participants from five rural secondary schools. This study found that the causes of learner aggression were rooted in the family, the environment and the school. It was further established that the consequences of learner aggression were so serious that it resulted in victims experiencing intense fear, anxiety, tension, depression and ill-health. Furthermore, the findings of the empirical investigation concurred, to a large extent, with the findings of the literature study. Teachers’ experiences of learners with disciplinary problems in secondary schools in KwaZulu-NatalNaicker, Sandra 07 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was to understand the teachers’ experiences of learners with disciplinary problems. A literature study was conducted on various issues related to disciplinary problems in schools. In the empirical investigation a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological research design was used. The study was conducted in one secondary school in KwaZulu-Natal. The purposive sample comprised of 10 teachers who experienced discipline problems and two teachers who were knowledgeable about the issue. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data were analysed and interpreted by means of the theoretical frameworks of the Bar-On Model of Emotional Intelligence and the Bronfenbrenner ecological model of child development. The findings revealed how disciplinary problems impacted negatively on the emotional and social well-being of the teachers. It was concluded that teachers needed improved coping strategies and collaborative support from the School Management Team and the Department of Education to deal with disciplinary problems. / Inclusive Education / M. of learners in historically coloured schools.
An eclectic approach was followed because theoretical views on motivation could
not furnish a comprehensive theory. The definition emerging from this approach
states that motivation is a process started within a person to create a state of need
for satisfaction and happiness that can be reached by instigating and sustaining
goal-directed activity. The link between learning and motivation, as well as related
factors, was ascertained. Determinants of high and low levels of learning motivation
were established. Programmes aimed at higher motivation levels were explored.
Empirically it was proven that grade 9 learners in historically coloured schools
leaned more towards an extrinsic orientation; grade 12's more intrinsic. An

Factors related to school refusal of black adolescents in the Impendle areaChemane, Bonginkosi Reginald 11 1900 (has links)
The specific aim of this research study was to identify, explore, describe and
interpret the factors related to school refusal of black adolescents. An overview of
literature was used to arrive at a broader appreciation of issues pertaining to
school refusal phenomenon and also to black adolescents.
Ten subjects participated in this study. Data were gathered qualitatively using
ethnographic interviews. The following factors were found to be contributory to
the problem of school refusal: School refusers who stay with grandparents
instead of staying with biological parents; fear of something specific at school; lack
of insight into the refusal problem; lover plays a role in refusal behaviour;
protective parents; poor social relationships; fathers that play a marginal role in
the family; parents' worldview; emotional problems and weak or no attempts to
stop behaviour. The emphasis was on the understanding of the refusal

Addressing adolescent aggression by means of physical exercise : a case studyMdluli, Ndabenhle Terry 06 1900 (has links)
Aggression in South African schools is a matter of great concern. A review of the existing literature indicated that physical exercises contribute to people’s well-being. This study thus investigated to what extent physical exercises could be used to address the aggression of students in a secondary school. An empirical investigation was done by means of a mixed methods case study design. A purposive sample of 25 students was chosen from students in grades 9 to 11. The students completed an adapted Buss-Perry questionnaire on aggression to determine their levels of aggression. Thereafter they embarked on a 10 week physical exercise programme (30 sessions of 40 minutes each), before completing the same questionnaire. The results indicated that the programme alleviated their feelings of aggression, especially in the boys. Qualitative interviews with 10 of the participants who benefitted most from the exercises indicated how they experienced the programme. Factors affecting the choice of business studies in the FET phase in three co-educational independent schools in KwaZulu-NatalAkerman, Lisa 06 1900 (has links)
The study population for the research comprised Grade 9 learners attending three co-educational, independent schools in KwaZulu-Natal in order to determine factors influencing the selection of business studies for FET phase. Methodology involved qualitative and quantitative approaches with closed and open-ended questionnaires plus one-on-one interviews. Descriptive statistics were produced and opened ended questions and interviews were examined for trends and influences. Findings reflected wide divergence in factual information, attitudes, and opinions on significant issues such as expected level of difficulty, influence of educators, parents and peers on selection, amount of work required and value of subject for future studies or careers. Conclusions were that there was a lack of completed research indicating a need for future research, greater preparation was required pre-FET level to assist decision making about selection of the subject which should involve parents, educators and input from the business world. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Hazing is a universal practice. The process is multi-dimensional and includes both positive and negative aspects. Hazing broadly refers to the negative aspects of what newcomers experience as they integrate into a group. This study focuses on hazing during orientation programmes for Grade 8 boys in monastic secondary schools in South Africa. The problem was investigated by a literature study and a survey using a self-designed questionnaire. It was completed by a non-probability sample of 296 Grade 12 boys from three selected schools in Gauteng Province. Data measured the biographical attributes of respondents and determined their opinions of activities engaged in during the orientation programmes. Findings indicated that respondents were positive about the orientation programme which acts as an introduction into secondary school and is a means whereby traditions are transmitted. Respondents were very opposed to any injurious activity. The objectives of orientation programmes are well-grounded but when they deteriorate into hazing, they are very negatively perceived. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)
