Laberinto, violencia y parodia : Análisis textual de Pólvora Negra de Montero Glez

Oyágüez Reyes, Esther January 2011 (has links)
This essay examines how the image of the labyrinth appears in the novel Pólvora Negra (2008) by Montero Glez, a novel that we inscribe into the Spanish postmodern literature tradition.         The hypothesis of this essay is that the labyrinth works as a main theme or a macro theme for the novel since it recurs frequently and at the same time contains other topics, such as violence.         Our analysis shows, using a structural semiotic method, that the presence of the labyrinth occurs in four different ways in the text. The first is in the physical landscape since Madrid in the beginning of the 20th century, the space in which the novel is ambiented, is a labyrinthine town with small, dark, dirty and bad smelling streets. The second is in the structure of society, which is also labyrinthine since it represents an unjust and corrupt social order that is more obvious among the political leading class but that has an effect on all the segments of society. The third is that the physical and mental trayectories of the three main caracthers in the novel are labyrinthine, which is something that the reader can notice throughout the text. The fourth is that the novel itself has a labyrinthine narrative which means that the reader’s project also manifests itself as labyrinthine. The reader of Pólvora Negra has to deal with both the labyrinth in the text and the labyrinth of the text.         This essay analyzes the narrator’s voice as well as its function in the novel. The use of parody is abundant in the novel. Two kinds of parody are founded: the historical parody and the parody of the criminal novel.

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation focuses on the study of Western esotericism in European culture and forms a method of discovering esoteric topics in cultural artifacts. Using the definition as a corpus of knowledge historically divided between esoteric, reserved for the intellectual and power elite, and exoteric, available for everybody, I argue that esotericism represents the knowledge that always accompanied the cultural production of the Mediterranean zone, adding a spiritual meaning to any visual or written work of art. The contemporary novels of the past decade by the Spanish author Javier Sierra are fully based on a historical investigation, in which esotericism appears as a nuclear topic, revealing the great interest of the public in the mysteries of the past. Through the postmodern cultural theories, together with sociological and historical methods, the dissertation explores the cultural processes that lead to the shift of esoteric knowledge in the 20th century from secretive to publically available. The study defines the purpose of recreating the European past and investigates the secrets of European cultural formation. Through an insider-outsider perspective, it analyzes the cultural artifacts, that appear in the novels in the form of reference or as a nuclear part of the plot. It presents the scope of esoteric currents, that are divided between the discipline of religion, science, and philosophy, which form the tetrahedron of knowledge as a theoretic model for this study. The constructed model reveals the interaction of the three disciplines throughout the history and examines the reasons for the religious disenchantment of the 20th century, proven through Digital Humanities’ research as the predominance of science over the Catholic Church, which allowed the esoteric knowledge to reappear. The study explores the affiliation of esotericism with science through the scientific-cultural inquiries between the ancient myths and reality, by showing that man’s consciousness had always been dependent on the scientific perception of the world. It explores the pagan symbolism that is mixed with Christian traditions and reveals the stories, hidden behind the representation of the greatest works of art, by combining and analyzing the wisdom of the past and the contemporary spiritual inquiries in their philosophical meaning. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2017

This book presents a specific moment in the history of the Brazilian state of Acre, which is neither common nor properly approached in most school books and, therefore, is not part of many Brazilian people s world knowledge. The novel portrays the political and social context of the Amazonian region at the end of the 19th century, focusing on the conquest of Acre and the historical scenery of the time. Galvez imperador do Acre, representing the new historic novel, brings a critical and questioning view of the events of the time, introducing another way of understanding the historic discourse. Built up on the basis of irony, parody and intertextuality, this novel raises questions as to the discursive construction of History in relation to the time of the novel writing. This study analyses the novel structure, taking into account the creation process and the dialogues highlighted in the quotations, headings and elements that lead to Bakhtinian carnivalization. This analysis also tries to find out the importance of the novel structure and also the implicit meanings of a fragmented-built-up Historic discourse.

Valero, Silvia M. 04 1900 (has links)
The collapse and disappearance of the Soviet Union implied many transformations in the Cuban society, which altered the traditional construction of identity within the frame of the nation-state. It is in that context where alternative new discourses on “race”, racism and negritude emerged. The representation of the afro-descendent in the novels of the 1990’s and 2000’s poses enormous interest since the literary text has been one of the spaces where identity markers have been renegotiated. This dissertation explores how social discourses on cubanidad and negritude have an effect on the writers Eliseo Altunaga and Marta Rojas and their literary production. Analyzing the works of Eliseo Altunaga y Marta Rojas, this thesis reconstructs their dialogues with Cuban literary historiography, the history of the island, and the discourses circulating around current ethno-racial debates. Altuanga and Rojas have opposed visualizations of Cuban history, and elaborate works and characters with marked ideo-aesthetic differences. Altuanga focuses on the search for an epistemological rupture in the conception of the Negro in the Cuban imaginary, emphasizing national historic events with black progratonists to reinforce the impression of continuity in their condition of subalternity. Rojas, on the other hand, turns to black and mulata protagonists to narrate the process of transculturation that has contributed, in her view, to the consolidation of contemporary Cuban cultural identity. From an intermediate space of enunciation between the first decades of the Revolution and the Special Period in Times of Peace, Rojas constructs a novelistic trilogy that signals the border separating pre- and post-revolutionary periods with respect to the treatment of the Negro.

De l’esthétique de la trace : Mémoire, Histoire, Récit dans l’oeuvre de six romancières centraméricaines actuelles (1990-2007= / On the Aesthetics of Trace : Memory, History, Narration in the Oeuvre of Six Current Central American Women Writers (1990-2007)

Marchio, Julie 06 December 2014 (has links)
In the context of the progressive (re-)democratization of the Central American isthmus during the 1990s, the sub-genre of the historical novel lived a new boom inscribing itself in a global tendency on the Latin American sub-continent. Women writers in the isthmus not only started to make their presence felt in the novel, in general, scarcely cultivated by them up to that moment, but participated actively in the new enthusiasm provoked by the mise en fiction of history, a phenomenon barely studied by Central American literary criticism up until then. This study is based on the textual analysis of seven novels published between 1992 and 2007 by six Central American women writers. It seeks to demonstrate that the fictional writing of these Central American women novelists is characterized by a certain number of specific features that do not depend on biology but represent a historical approach that predominantly focuses on women, the marginalised and those excluded from power. On the other hand, it also tries to show that at the same time this writing is part of a more general tendency that we have termed the "aesthetics of trace": a progressive evolution of the historic novel towards the novel of historical memory. In this way, the present research about a literature still too marginalized in European universities, aims at contributing to the analysis of the modes of history writing chosen by women writers in Central America and to the comprehension of the change of paradigm, which the historical novel is undergoing at this moment, not only in the Central American region, but also in a number of Latin American countries that are marked by a process of political transition.
