Att leva i ett kulturellt ingenmansland - En narrativ studie om hur hederskulturen präglar unga mäns identitetsutveckling

Alehesnawi, Hanin, Bakirci, Ilknur January 2020 (has links)
Honour-related violence and oppression is a global problem that affects an enormous number of people. Identity formation is a critical development stage for young people and can be even more problematic when living in an honour-related culture within a modern-day Scandinavia. In this thesis, we focus on the narratives of two young men who highlight the complexity of living across two distinct cultural contexts, a parallel society in other words. We used narrative analysis to examine two autobiographies;one from aDanish setting, the other from a Swedish one. The study set out to examine what an honour culture is and how it affected the lives of the young men who tell their story. Our analysis shows that young men are also exposed to violence and oppression. As a result, they may suffer from various stresses, both physical and psychological, in the form of abuse, forced marriage and compulsory role assignments in the family and broader community. The study provides a clear picture of how life in a parallel society can turn out for young men and how their identity is affected in the process. Furthermore, our study highlights the lived experiences of the young men and examines the resilience required to break away from a culture that undermines one's ability to live an independent life.

Hedersrelaterat Våld och Förtryck

Ayad, Sara, Halak, Asma January 2021 (has links)
abstract The purpose of this study is to shed light on the experiences of the social workers when managing and treating errands concerning young girls/women who are exposed to honor related violence and oppression in several municipalities in Central Sweden. The study’s main questions focus, and purpose was based on five qualitative interviews. These questions were answered through five qualitative interviews through a targeted sample. The two selected theoretical perspectives were intersectionality and empowerment. Previous research shows that honor related violence occurs throughout the world with 5000 women being killed annually in the name of honor. Previous research emphasizes the importance of not connecting honor related errands to a certain culture and sheds light to the social services challenges, for example, when some families deny that honor related violence occurs.  The interviews emphasized that collaboration between social services and sheltered housing, long-term support, respect and understanding for the clients were central aspects. The result could give an indication that especially the smaller municipalities in central Sweden did not have an actual action plan for their particular municipality. The results of the study could show that cases concerning honor violence and oppression were complex and broad and could complicate the social services preparedness and when handling the honor related cases.  Intersectionality could provide an understanding of the risk if these issues would be culturalized because it could lead to a “we and them” mindset.

Våld och förtryck i hederns namn : Kvinnors roll / Violence and oppression in the name of honor : Women´s role

Hourani, Aya January 2022 (has links)
In violence and oppression in the name of honor, both women and men can be victims and perpetrators in different ways in this practice. In many countries, honorary standards are accepted. This means that family, relatives and family friends have the right to control, punish and in some cases murder girls and women if they are deemed to have "brought shame on the family". This thesis aims to explore these cultural practices and the role and actions of women regarding violence and oppression in the name of honor, based on the interviews with professionals combined with research related to the custom. The structure in this thesis is based on the following questions: What is violence and oppression in the name of honor? And what role does women play in this cultural custom? To achieve answers to these questions a qualitative research-method was applied to the study. The qualitative study comprises interviews with 4 strategically selected participants with in-depth knowledge of violence and oppression in the name of honor in their professional capacity.  The interview material in this thesis, which is also structured by themes, has been analyzed through a gender theoretic framework.  In conclusion, the study shows that violence and oppression in the name of honor can be practiced everywhere and shows how women play an active part in the custom by participating, nourishing and enforcing the control of family members and possibly punish anyone who violates the honorary norm.

Socialtjänstens arbete med hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck : En systematisk litteraturstudie om problemförståelse, arbetssätt och brister / Social Services’ Work With Honor-Related Violence And Oppression : A systematic litterature study about problem comprehensions, working methods and shortcomings

Gruda, Rijalda, Ilyaz, Elif January 2023 (has links)
Honor-related violence and oppression has become increasingly noticed in Swedish society due to unfortunate cases regarding young women and the normative culture of their families. For this reason the honor-related research field in Sweden has also increased and several studies have been carried out on. In Sweden it is the social services that have the primary responsibility to provide support to the victims of honor-related violence and oppression. The aim of this composition is to analyze how the social services in Sweden work with the victims and the shortcomings that follow within the work according to results of previous research in terms of scientific articles and reports. Furthermore, the aim is also to investigate in what way previous research discusses the concept of the word culture related to studies on honor-related violence and oppression. This composition is based on the results of nine scientific articles and reports that have thoroughly been inspected. The research results indicate that the social services working methods aim for safety but lack due to having a limited capacity for action in terms of budget and legal adaptation. The previous research also indicates that the cultural aspects in studies on honor-related violence and oppression may vary depending on focus of study. The results gave two perspectives on whether culture is an explanatory model for the honor-related phenomenon or if it is in need of further explanation.

Wardeh, Shamoun January 2022 (has links)
The reason for the thesis is to show that child marriage not only occurs in Eastern countries, Africa, and Asia, but there are also child marriages here in Sweden. The honor culture is one of the important reasons that contributes to child marriage. Although Swedish law and children’s rights prohibit this, many children are still exposed to marriage. The number of child marriage is increasing year by year.   This essay will focus on research of two questions which are "What does the situation look like regarding child marriage in Sweden", and "How does honor culture affect child marriage". The method used in the research is qualitative text analysis. This method is designed to investigate problems in the community. The theoretical framework is the perspective of honor which is related to child marriage.   In the conclusion of this thesis, it is shown how the number of children being married off in Sweden is increasing and how the culture of honor plays an important role in child marriage in Sweden.   Keywords: Child Marriage, Honor culture, human rights, children’s rights, Sweden.

Skola och heder : Skolkuratorers handlingsutrymme i ärenden gällande hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck / School and honor : School counselors’ room for maneuver in cases concerninghonor-related violence and oppression

Skanelid, Valmire, Ekberg, Alexsandra January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how school counselors perceive their competence and knowledge regarding honor-related violence and whether it in turn affects their ability and opportunities to draw attention to these young people. We also want to find out how school counselors, based on their knowledge, deal with suspicions of honor-related violence and oppression. The study's overall issues concern different forms of knowledge that school counselors use when it comes to work with honor issues and how school counselors act when there is a suspicion that a student is exposed to honor-related violence and oppression. We have used a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews with six school curators from two different municipalities in southern Sweden. We thematized these interviews, and then analyzed them using scope for action as theory and previous research. The study clearly shows that honor issues are considered a challenging and complex subject and the results show large differences in school curators' own views on their knowledge, how to acquire their knowledge and what the collaboration with the social services looks like.

Att tala eller tiga : En kritisk diskursanalys av kurslitteratur som berör så kallat hedersvåld för blivande socionomer / To speak or not to speak : A critical discourse analysis of course literature on so called honor related violence

Yilmaz, Melis, Nordström, Tove January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the different discourses linked to so called honor related violence in course literature from term 1 through 6 during the fall of 2018 at the department of social work at Stockholm university. This due to the extensive debates on the subject that implies varied opinions from both media and the research community. To analyze the different discourses, Fairclough's critical discourse analysis is used by looking for modality, transitivity and intertextuality in the different texts. The analysis circles around three different discourses. One is the “us and them” discourse, which differentiates the Swedish ideals from “others” which are portrayed as worse. The second discourse handles “critique against polarization”, which can be connected to post colonialism that criticizes the “us and them” discourse. The third discourse is the “precautionary” discourse that can be connected to social constructionism, whereas the texts leave room for interpretation as they rarely make any certain statements. Throughout all of these discourses we also found that the perpetrator and the victim rarely is spoken of when talking honor related violence, as compared to “normal violence”, and more often structural explanations rather than individual ones were used.

Hederlig, respektabel och miserabel : En kvalitativ intervjustudie av svenska muslimers uppfattning och erfarenheter av hedersrelaterat förtryck och våld

Ibrahim Hassan, Amal January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to capture the perception of Muslims in Sweden in regards to experiences of honor related oppression and violence. Additionally, particular focus is given to Muslims’ thoughts in Sweden on how they are portrayed in Swedish media reports of honor related oppression and violence. A qualitative study was conducted through six interviews with Muslim Swedes in order to express their views, thoughts and experiences of honor related oppression and violence, as well as their opinions on how the Swedish media depicts Muslims with respect to this subject. The empirical findings have been interpreted and analyzed in light of three theoretical frameworks in addition to previous research on honor related oppression and violence. The results of this study indicate that all informants believe that honor related violence and oppression amount to limitation and control over women’s lives. Majority of informants with experience of oppression linked to honor all claim that such oppression is due to culture and honor. Contrastingly, the participants strongly dismiss and denounce Islam as being the contributing factor to honor related oppression and violence. However, results suggest a dissimilitude amongst participants as one of the informants suggests that religion is manipulated to reinforce and justify power structures that allow oppression and violence, which stem from honor, to continue to exist. Moreover, the study reveals that the informants believe that the Swedish media has a tendency to present Muslims as perpetrators of crimes related to honor related violence and killings. The informants call for a distinct definition of honor related oppression and violence, which includes all forms of violence against women.

“Min pappa ströp mig när jag var jätteliten” : En Kvalitativ Studie om Hedersförtryck Inom Nära Relationer / “My father strangled me when I was very small” : A Qualitative Study About Honor Suppression Within Close Relationships

Arifzade, Evelina Zulfiya January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Honor-related violence and oppression is a major problem in our society. Many individuals live in fear and don't dare to seek help from public authorities. The most targeted group of individuals are young girls and women. Most often, the perpetrators are the men in the family and relatives, but the women can also be the perpetrators. Many lives are taken because of collective norms in honor groups and many suffer in silence. The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge about the practices of the honor culture and the consequences with a particular focus on honor-related violence and oppression within close relationships. The study contains experiences of individuals who live in collective groups with honor norms. Previous studies on honor-related violence and oppression show that it has been difficult to map how many individuals are victims of this kind of crime. The chosen theories in this study are: stigma, individualism and collectivism and gender. These will be a tool to gain a deeper understanding of different kinds of honor norms and how they affect the victims. The collected material in this study consists of semi-structured interviews which were then analyzed with the help of the chosen theories and previous research. The results and the analysis show that honor norms express themselves differently depending on the gender and what kind of society you are in. It also shows that there is a lack of competence on honor-related violence and oppression. The respondents in the interviews demonstrate that standards of honor exist and that it must be talked about more in our society.
