Nonprofit Leaders' Strategies in Capturing the Attention of Committed, Large Donors

Holland, Aneatra 01 January 2017 (has links)
Few U.S. nonprofit organizations meet annual operational costs. Facing government funding cuts, U.S. nonprofit leaders have had to seek other revenue streams to remain operable and ensure that the clients they serve continue to receive support. Leaders often seek out large donors but lack strategies for successfully doing so. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies successful nonprofit leaders have used to capture the attention of committed, large donors in Southern California. Government failure theory and independence theory constituted the conceptual framework. The purposeful sampling method consisted of 3 nonprofit agency managers who had operated a nonprofit for at least 5 years, while securing a longstanding partnership of large, committed donors. These managers substantiated having met the criteria in having successfully gained committed large donor(s), and operating in a geographic setting with no less than 50,000 residents. Data included participant interviews and company websites. Transcribed data were analyzed by comparing meanings that formulated clusters into themes, and then triangulated across sources to bolster the trustworthiness of interpretations. From these clusters, 5 distinctive themes were identified: cultivating donors, building personal relationships with donors, promoting the mission, understanding relationship contribution, and detailing directly what the donation will accomplish. Findings impact social change by fortifying nonprofits with committed large donors, to reduce need in society, and create greater financial independence within communities.

Qos-aware Service Selection For Web Service Composition

Abdyldaeva, Rahat 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Composition of web services is one of the flexible and easiest approaches for creating composite services that fulfill complex tasks. Together with providing convenience in creation of new software applications, service composition has various challenges. One of them is the satisfaction of user-defined Quality of Service (QoS) requirements while selecting services for a composition. Load balancing issue is another challenge as uncontrolled workload may lead to violation of service providers&rsquo / QoS declarations. This thesis work proposes a QoS aware method for optimum service composition while taking into account load balancing. M/M/C queuing model is utilized for the individual services to determine sojourn time distribution for possible compositions. Percentile of the execution time, price and availability are considered as QoS parameters. Proposed algorithm selects the optimum composition according to QoS constraints and utility provided by the services. The performance of the method is evaluated by custom simulation software and is compared to two other methods, random selection and average execution timebased optimal service selection.

How to Look Good Naked 'on the couch' : psychoanalytic approaches to British makeover television and gender

Thomadaki, Theodora January 2017 (has links)
This project formulates an original psycho-cultural approach by studying the cultural and therapeutic value of Gok Wan’s makeover series How To Look Good Naked. Through an in-depth application of Donald Woods Winnicott’s object relations psychoanalysis to the textual narratives of the makeover show, and by developing a viewing method that derives from psychoanalytic training on observation, this thesis offers an account of the affective impact of Gok Wan’s popular makeover phenomenon. This thesis addresses key themes and elements that signal the evolution of British makeover television and identifies how Gok Wan’s format and strategies chime with what has widely been hailed as a particularly ‘therapeutic’ moment in popular culture. The emblematic features of Gok Wan’s rendition of the makeover format highlights its potential positive outcomes by examining the articulation of current embodied feminine subjective experiences, in order to interrogate the complex relationship between postfeminism and therapeutic discourse. This thesis recognises that the therapeutic opportunity of Gok Wan’s method lies in the transformational process by creating emotionally constructive spaces where the articulation of experiences leads to inner self-discovery. Playful mechanisms of creativity are central to Gok Wan’s empathetic approach to working with participants to enable transformation, reflecting a number of key themes in object relations psychoanalysis and its understanding of self-experience. The opportunities afforded to participants for self-interpretation create a useful platform to reflect on Gok Wan’s role, who has been candid about the parallels between his own emotional experience and that of his participants. Psychoanalytic models of transference and countertransference indicate how this dynamic challenges dominant notions of the makeover expert as omnipotent. This project demonstrates the value of object relations psychoanalysis for critical interventions in the field of media, cultural and feminist studies in order to provide a deeper understanding of the affective impact of makeover television in shaping notions of subjective experience.

The history of the flute in jazz, basic techniques, and how jazz and improvisation can inform a classical performance

Rodriguez, Florida January 1900 (has links)
Master of Music / Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance / Karen M. Large / This report covers a history of the flute in jazz music as well as the advancement of the flute in jazz, starting from the late 1920s. The lives of jazz flute pioneers Alberto Socarrás, Wayman Carver, Herbie Mann, Hubert Laws, and Ali Ryerson are discussed, as well as their contributions to the history of jazz flute. Basic jazz techniques such as improvisation are broken down and explained for classically trained flutists and others who have an interest in playing jazz music but do not know where to begin. This report also discusses how practicing these techniques can further aid in preparing a classical performance. Examples included in this report are excerpts from Mozart’s Concerto in D Major for flute and Mike Mower’s Sonata Latino.

"Male, Female or Both"? : En Jämförande Analys av hur det Androgyna Påverkar Identiteten och Konsten i Orlando av Virginia Woolf och How to be both av Ali Smith / "Male, Female or Both"? : A Comparative Analysis of the Influence of Androgynity on Identity and Art in Virginia Woolf's Orlando and Ali Smith's How to Be Both

Gulding, Malin January 2018 (has links)

The ethical-professional know-how-to-be of nursing professionals: an overview on the technical formation

Marta Pazos Peralba Coelho 01 June 2009 (has links)
In order to guarantee integral attention and quality to the health care of the Brazilian population, nursing professionals have been working on collective actions with a view to implementing new health care practices and formation of new professionals in this area. The objective is the achievement of a formation which is based on critical-emancipating competencies and make it sure that its construction is essentially oriented and based upon SUS principles and strategies. The reality of the formation of professionals in the field of nursing has always been focused on the know-how-to-know and the know-how-to-do to the detriment of the know-how-to-be. This study is based on the presupposition that the development of a ethical-professional know-how-to-be dimension of the nursing formation contributes to a professional practice that leads to ethical-political and social justice values. Therefore, investigation was focused on how the ethical-professional know-how-to-be dimension is developed in the nursing technical course. This is an ethnographic-approach-based research which theoretical perspective tends to the dialectic and historic materialism, in which educational processes are understood as integrating parts of social historically determined formations. Data were collected based on direct observation of a technical health care school daily routine, as well as from the school documents and by interviewing the school technical body. Results have shown how the school teaching body sees the ethical-professional know-how-to-be and how it was applied in the implementation of the formative processes, either to the school curriculum and to the school teaching body practice. The main data is that there is no educational systematized process on the dimension of the ethical-professional know-how-to-be in the school, and also the curriculum does not detail its content as to values and attitudes. It is then concluded that this dimension, despite being often present in the professional practice, is not always approached in the processes of formation which are traditionally based on the scientific rationality. This happens either on account of a traditional formation heritage, as well as on account of a lack of a clear understanding of this dimension and how the formation of such dimension should be brought about

Usages cliniques de la lettre : du bien-dire au savoir-lire. / Clinical uses of the letter : from saying-well to knowing-how-to-read

Pasqual, Leander 19 January 2016 (has links)
Lacan introduced the concept of the letter in his teaching in order to define the direction ofthe analytic cure. In this perspective, the definition of the letter is essential forpsychoanalysis. Nonetheless, the definition of the letter changed throughout the course ofhis teaching and this change of perspective implies a new conception of the clinic. As such,in this work we propose to study the different clinical uses of the letter in Jacques Lacan'steaching. Initially, it involved a representative usage of the letter, one which implies theproduction of meaning effects. At this moment, the letter and the signifier areindistinguishable. This use of the letter permits one to define psychoanalysis as a practiceof saying-well. Secondly, it involves the letters use of jouissance, which implies theproduction of senseless jouissance. This time, Lacan successfully distinguishes betweenletter and signifier. This use of the letter permits one to define psychoanalysis as a practiceof knowing-how-to-read. As such, saying-well and knowing-how-to-read designate twomodalities for the usage of the letter. The objective of this investigation is thus that ofdemonstrating that psychoanalysis is a practice of the letter.

What protégés and mentors report helped or hindered the outcomes of mentoring relationships: an adapted critical incident technique study

Buydens, Sarah Louise 04 January 2017 (has links)
How to best conduct a mentoring relationship has been confounded by the lack of a consistent definition of “mentoring” and the scarcity of studies addressing how to achieve a positive outcome. This study contributes new, operationalized definitions of “mentoring,” “mentor,” and “protégé,” and a modified version of the Critical Incident Technique and the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique, called the Adapted Critical Incident Technique (ACIT), which is more consistent with a qualitative methodology. The researcher interviewed 18 self-described mentors and protégés to obtain 207 quotes about what critical behaviours helped or hindered mentoring relationship outcomes. Independent judges confirmed the placement of quotes into 13 categories of behaviours that helped mentors and protégés to reach the mentoring goals and 10 categories of behaviours that hindered the mentoring outcome. The findings contribute to an increased understanding of the foundation upon which mentors and protégés in all fields may potentially build better programs and training under the guise of mentorship. / Graduate / 2018-12-01
