The Association of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility and Client Experiences and Outcomes in Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis

Scott, Lisa Michelle 04 August 2022 (has links)
Psychotherapist multicultural competence has been given increasing attention in the field of psychology since the 1970s. However, individuals and communities who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color are still less likely to attend psychotherapy and often drop out earlier than White clients. These trends highlight the importance of the ongoing research on therapist multicultural competence. There are many multicultural competencies, however, the current study focuses on therapist cultural humility. Specifically, we systematically searched all the current research on the association between cultural humility and client experiences and outcomes in therapy. Our literature search yielded eight studies that met our search criteria. Next, we synthesized the data by conducting a meta-analysis using the metric of Pearson's r as the effect size. In addition, we aggregated average item-level therapist scores and the reliability coefficient of the Cultural Humility Scale (CHS; Hook et al., 2013). We found a moderate positive correlation between client perceptions of therapist cultural humility and client experiences and outcomes in therapy of r = .39 (p < .05). Furthermore, we found the average item-level score to be 3.86 out of a maximum score of 5 (SE =.086), which corresponds with the rating of "mildly agree," indicating that clients typically perceive therapists to demonstrate cultural humility. Finally, we found CHS to be reliable across studies, with an average alpha coefficient of .91. These finding suggest that cultural humility is an important aspect of the psychotherapeutic relationship. Furthermore, they suggest that the CHS is a reliable measure and should continue to be used in future studies. Finally, because our review yielded only eight studies, more research on this relationship is needed.

God's Estranged Child: Self-Deprecating Images in Edward Taylor's Preparatory Meditations

Therber, Nancy Eileen 08 1900 (has links)
Throughout his Preparatory Meditations, Edward Taylor used many images to deprecate himself. These images reflected his Puritan religious beliefs rather than an extremely low self-image. The themes of his poetry were taken from the Bible, but they reflected the many duties which befell him in conjunction with his ministry at Westfield. By using images which were most familiar to him and the rhetorical devices of the seventeenth century, Taylor sought to seek God's forgiveness by doing His will--confessing personal guilt, asking for forgiveness, and praising God's mercy. Because the meditations were directed only to God, Taylor never sought to publish them. Like the child he so desperately wanted to be looked upon as, he sought only his father's favor.

Blobecq, Peter, Gunnarsson, Malin January 2023 (has links)
Bakgrund. / Background. Research has shown that the personality dimensions Honesty-humility from HEXACO and Agreeableness from the Big Five are important indicators of Counterproductive workplace behavior (CWB). There is a lot of research on Honesty-humility and Agreeableness, however, as far as we know the relationship between these two personality dimensions is sparsely explored. The purpose of this study was to research the relationship between Honesty-humility and Agreeableness. Material and method. The Riks-SOM survey from 2018 was used to study the relationship between Honesty-humility and Agreeableness. 3500 people between the ages of 16-85 were randomly selected from the register for the total population. Multiple regression analysis with 5000 bootstrap iterations was used to study the relationship while controlling for background variables, with a sample of 1635 subjects. Result and conclusions. The study showed a positive relationship between Honesty-humility and Agreeableness even after controlling for age, sex, and education.

A mindset for strategic thinking: developing a concept and measure

Weyhrauch, William Stewart January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Psychological Sciences / Satoris S. Culbertson / Developing effective strategic thinkers in an organization requires a dedication to early identification, selection, development, and practice, along with the conceptual understanding and measurement tools to make it happen. In support of this, the current research focused on three objectives: 1) establishing theoretical support across multiple disciplines for the concept of a strategic thinking mindset, 2) developing the Strategic Thinking Mindset Test (STMT) using situational judgment test methodology for the U.S. Army, and 3) evaluating the results of a pilot test of the STMT for reliability and construct validity. The STMT focuses on three characteristics of a strategic mindset: Flexibility, Humility, and Inclusiveness. These characteristics were derived from themes found common to strategic thinking literature across the disciplines of psychology, management, and military science. In all stages of this research, officers and non-commissioned officers of the U.S. Army served as participants. The first three stages involve the development and keying of content for the STMT. A sample of 125 participants provided scenarios in Stage 1. In Stage 2, 75 participants gave feedback on the scenarios and provided realistic response options. In Stage 3, 224 participants rated the response options according to expression of the characteristic and effectiveness. In Stage 4, the pilot version of the STMT was administered to 229 participants, along with several other measures used to establish construct validity evidence. The results of the pilot test revealed that, although there is some evidence supporting the construct validity of the STMT as a three-factor test of flexibility, humility, and inclusiveness, the overall profile of evidence suggests that the construct(s) being measured are unclear. Low inter-item correlations contribute to a low internal consistency in the measure, which further limits the STMT’s use as a predictor. The pilot test revealed interesting results related to cognitive ability, specifically a negative relationship between the mindset and cognitive ability under best/worst response instructions, rather than a positive relationship or no relationship, as was the case under most/least likely response instructions. Future research recommendations are discussed in the areas of SJT development, scoring, format, and the further refinement and measurement of the strategic thinking mindset.

Relevância filosófica das pequenas coisas: a infância no livro I das Confissões de Agostinho de Hipona / Philosophical relevance of small things: infancy on the book I of Augustines of Hippo Confessions

Rufino, Jose Renivaldo 31 January 2011 (has links)
Augustine confers special relevance to simple things. In infancy, whose stature is a sign of the humility characteristic of the lowest things, he delights in the truth in their small thoughts about small things. This delight, within the child with the least of being, remits to the truth of God, with the highest of being. Yet with highest of being, God humbles himself to the point of assuming the human condition, being born as a child and, with humility contrary to pride, nullifies the effect of the fall caused by pride. The foundation of humility that he is, he could be considered less than man, because being God he became man. If it were thus, the being with highest of being would, paradoxically, be the being with the least of being. But it is not like that, because when God descends to the inferior condition, hit is to elevate man to the superior condition. This is the analysis that this work proposes.

Soberba e humildade em Agostinho de Hipona / Pride and humility in Augustine of Hipon

Vargas, Walterson José 20 June 2011 (has links)
Pride and humility in Augustine are analyzed in this work through an inter-relationship between the anagogical/homeland-Way (Patria-Via) and Trinitarian methods, which we believe were used by Augustine. Applying this method will lead us to note that pride and humility can only be understood in the light of one another, because they have a symmetrically proportional structure: pride is the radical disease of the human condition, and humility its adequate remedy. Thus, the pride, in the level of being, represents an usurpation, a desire to steal what is proper to God, the autonomy and independence in being; in the level of knowledge, is a presumption of worth by himself/herself, which leads a movement away from inner truth, making the man blind in the depths of his soul; and finally, at the level of wanting, corresponds to an injustice because it is the cause of the first misuse of free will, which led to the breakup of the order established by God in the eternal law. Humility, in inverted symmetry, corresponds, at the level of being, to a voluntary destruction, by which Christ stoops of his nature equal with Gods, taking a nature that is lower, the human nature; in the level of knowledge, it is understood as a confession regarding the truth about God and man himself, of his condition of sinful creature; and finally, at the level of wanting, as the path by which Christ, through his free obedience unto death on a cross and subsequent resurrection, restores justice lost in the first disobedience to the eternal law.
