Soil Genesis and Vegetation Response to Amendments and Microtopography in Two Virginia Coastal Plain Created Wetlands

Ott, Emily Thomas 12 June 2018 (has links)
Wetlands serve important ecosystem functions such as carbon sequestration but are often affected by disturbances like urban development, agriculture, and road building. For wetlands created to mitigate losses, it is important that the ecosystem functions successfully replicate those of natural wetlands. Created wetlands have frequently not provided these functions due to issues including low organic carbon (OC), high soil bulk density (BD), lost topsoil, incorrect hydrology, and failure of targeted vegetation establishment. Organic matter (OM) amendments help created wetlands attain these functions quicker, but, their long-term effects are seldom reported. This research's purpose was to measure the long-term effects of treatments at a sandy tidal freshwater wetland created in 2003 (WWE) and a fine-textured, non-tidal wetland created in 2002 (CCW). We tested OM treatments, topsoil amendment, and microtopography effects on soil and vegetation properties at WWE and OM treatments at CCW. Pedogenic changes in soil morphology, physical and chemical properties were detected by comparing data to previous studies at these sites. At both sites, litter and biomass parameters were measured to estimate total mass C. Herbaceous biomass was measured at WWE. At WWE, no long-term OM treatment effects from 78 or 156 Mg ha-1 were observed. Soils in pits had higher OC, lower BD, and lower chroma than soils on mounds. Sandy and loamy HSFI's developed at WWE within four years, but there were fewer sandy indicators after 12 years. Loamy HSFI's were lost at CCW from 2003 to 2016. Plots at WWE that were amended with topsoil had higher soil mass C than the sandy soil due to a finer texture, but total mass C did not vary. At CCW, long-term OM treatment effects were observed, including lower BD, higher soil mass C, and higher tree mass C with increasing compost rates up to 224 Mg ha-1. Overall, the ideal compost loading rate for constructed wetlands varied with wetland type and mitigation goals. Compost rates of 112 Mg ha-1 are sufficient for short term establishment of wetland vegetation and hydric soil properties, but higher rates near 224 Mg ha-1 may be required for effects that last over 10 years. / Ph. D. / Wetlands are unique habitats that provide environmental benefits such as carbon storage but are often negatively affected by human disturbances such as urban development and road construction. When wetlands are constructed to mitigate natural wetland losses, it is important that they successfully provide the benefits of the wetlands they replace. Created wetlands have frequently not functioned like natural wetlands due to soil issues including low organic carbon (OC) and high soil density (BD). Organic matter (OM) amendments such as composted yard waste help created wetlands attain these functions quickly after construction compared to unamnded wetlands. The purpose of this study was to measure long-term (greater than 10 years) effects of OM treatments on soil and vegetation properties at two different created wetlands. The two wetlands were a sandy tidal freshwater wetland created in 2003 (WWE) and a fine-textured, compacted, non-tidal wetland created in 2002 (CCW). Previous soil data were compared to recent soil samples to detect changes in physical and chemical soil properties over time. At WWE, soils in pits accumulated more OM, were higher in carbon, lower in BD, and had greyer color than soils in mounds. Hydric soil field indicators developed from upland soil within four years after construction at WWE. There were no long term compost effects on soil properties compared to a fertilized control, but the compost rates used were low compared to other recommendations, and the wetland was constructed carefully to avoid compaction. There were much higher rates of compost applied at CCW, which produced lower BD, higher soil mass C, and higher tree biomass. We recommend applying OM and avoiding compaction during wetland construction. Ideal OM loading rate depends on wetland type (soil texture, hydrology) and mitigation goals. In the fine-textured, compacted wetland studied here, compost rates of 112 Mg ha⁻¹ are ideal for short term establishment of wetland vegetation and soil properties, but higher rates near 224 Mg ha⁻¹ may be required for long term effects.

A complexity approach to heath risks related to water in Antananarivo precarious districts : the contextual notion challenging practices and coping strategies

Ognard, Carole 31 August 2018 (has links)
The geographical study of the health risks related to water in Antananarivo, metropolitan capital of Madagascar, a tropical country with a low level development, is articulated through the access conditions to the water resources, the evaluation of supplied water quality and the domestic practices performed until its consumption. This thesis seeks to illustrate via the hydric determinant how complex are the issues at the intersection of health and environment in an urban developing area. This complexity is due to the integration of the various components of the pathogenic system and the connections between them. In Antananarivo, our analyses show that the disparities of health as regards hydric risks are the reflection of a dichotomic social configuration inherited between the lower and the upper city and thus strongly impregnated by the social representations. To understand the mechanisms at the origin of these disparities of health, life environment in the precarious districts of Antananarivo is studied as a risk factor. These places are subjected to effects which are identified in the literature like contextual effects (relating to the characteristics of the territory) and compositional effects (relating to the characteristics of the individuals). In Antananarivo, the quantitative approach confirms the predominance of the contextual effects over the compositional effects. However, our fieldwork moderates this static and deterministic vision of the surveyed territories through the observation of the coping strategies developed by the populations to mitigate the failures of the urban services of health, water and sanitation. In agreement with recent publications, this research, argues that it exists a more complex and retroactive relation between the practices of the populations and the territories. This relation is in perpetual evolution. The individuals by their practices adapt and modify the configuration of the territories and conversely.

Epilepsia espontânea em Trinomys yonenagae (Rodentia, Echimyidae): ocorrência e comportamento / Spontaneous epilepsy in trinomys yonenagae (rodentia, echimyidae): occurrence and behavior

Cantano, Laís Mendes Ruiz 02 July 2013 (has links)
We present data and discuss the possibility that: a) the seizures presented by Trinomys yonenagae in the wild and in captivity are spontaneous and idiopathic, and b) they may be due to evolutionary processes. Epilepsy was characterized in this species in captivity from a survey started 16 years ago, made up of parents and descendants from six colonies of T. yonenagae collected in the Caatinga of Ibiraba (BA), and adults (129.90 ± 5.92 g) and pups born in captivity in a total of 295 individuals. The prevalence and incidence in individuals with epilepsy (EE) were estimated and seizures were analyzed by behavioral manifestations, based on Racine´s scale. Locomotion and anxiety indexes (open-field test, n = 35), as well as aspects of breeding (n = 11) and physiological indicators (balance food and water, n = 6), important to fitness were measured. Only two colonies showed EE, representing 9% and 28% of births. Approximately 10% of total individuals (165 and 130 ) are EE (n = 29, 14 and 15 ), and the represent 52 and 48%. In the last five years prevalence is 20-30%, and incidence ranged from 2 to 10 cases/ year. Seizures are only observed in adults (n = 24), the lowest latency is 13 months and the frequency is variable (1 to 24 in six years). The first stage is freezing and 50% reached stage 5 of Racine´s scale. In all couples, 5-50% of puppies are EE and occurred postpartum estrus, as expected for the species. The puppies are healthy and both the average offspring per litter (1.9 ± 0.3), as well as the average number of litters per couple (6.5 ± 5.0) is equal to values presented by non-epileptic couples (NE). The open-field test indicates that descendants of EE (DE) and EE are less anxious than NE. There is no difference between EE and NE regarding food and water intake. The difference in the number of EE in the colonies, the high percentage of EE pups, and the difference in the behavior of DE indicate the genetic basis of this epilepsy. In this context, we consider that in Trinomys yonenagae the limbic epilepsy seems to not compromise the fitness, which opens possibilities to be the result of evolutionary processes involving the escalation of antipredator responses

One of the objectives is to understand how the members of the managing committees participate of the democratic management process to access the water in the São Francisco Verdadeiro River subbasin by the Integrated System of Hydric Resources Management (SIGRH), guaranteeing the basic sanitation strengthening the social agreement necessary among the involved in this task (state and municipal governments and the citizens). Despite the efforts of the municipalities, little was altered in the environmental practices developed, which are developed with strong centralism, carrying traces of privativism and in a repressive way. Water: the difficult journey of preservation and access in the São Francisco Verdadeiro River Subbasin in Paraná, for its thesis elaboration the methodological resource study case was used, having interviews with the Committees members managing the Itaipu Binational Cultivating Good Water Program, with semi-structured interviews, primary sources analyses and bibliographical reference. It is widely recognized that the Cultivating Good Water Program, executed by the Managing Committees, has supplied the conditions and enough water for the generation of energy for Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam, but not as a socialization strategy and equal access to the water. Despite the contribution to the improvement of some life quality aspects of the population of São Francisco Verdadeiro River subbasin, the implementation of the interface of the hydric resources with the sanitation is not occurring, in which such hypothesis showed to be true / O tema desta investigação procura elucidar o papel desempenhado pelos Comitês Gestores do Programa Cultivando Água Boa, da Itaipu Binacional na gestão da política de recursos hídricos integrada à de saneamento na sub- bacia do Rio São Francisco Verdadeiro, que no processo de gestão ambiental buscam fomentar a modificação das práticas predatórias que potencializam o risco de exaurimento dos recursos naturais.

The study was carried through in the central region of Cerrado biome, in the state of Goiás, in wetlands situated in the City of Bela Vista de Goiás. There have been selected three wetlands for soil sampling: one conserved wetland, surrounded by natural vegetation (cerrado); one altered area, with occurrence of pasture in its adjacent areas; and another wetland, also altered, with the occurrence of agriculture in its adjacent areas. The samplings were taken in the months of April and May of 2008, through the use of lines of reference, according to their positions in the relief, in upper, average and lower position, following approximately the direction of the line of draining of the wetland. It has been collected samples in three depths: 0-10 cm; 10-20 cm and 20-40 cm. The variables studied have been: texture, pH in CaCl2 0.01 M; micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and B), macronutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg and S), concentration of Al and potential acidity (H+Al), and soil organic matter content (SOM). It was verified that the clay percentages in the lower region of the relief are higher in altered environments and the percentage of silt are higher in the wetland adjacent to the agricultural area. In lower position of the relief, the concentrations of SOM are lesser in wetlands adjacent to the agricultural areas and pastures. In the conserved wetland the base saturation is higher in lower position of relief and, in this same position, the acidity (pH) and the aluminum concentration is lesser than that in the average and upper positions, occurring the inverse in farming landscapes.

L.) under organic management in system of seeding with prepare soil and no till cropping system. This work was conducted in the experimental area of SIPA (Integrated system of agro ecological production), at the county of Serop?dica RJ, with the aim of valuate the growth , the water needs, and the efficiency of the use of the water by the bell pepper culture (Capsicum annuum. L ), at the conventional (PC) and the direct systems of soiling. The conventional system consisted of soil prepare with rotational hoe tied to a micro tractor, and the direct soiling, being done after the occupation of the area with a combination of Sorghum bicolor and Crotal?ria acroleura, that was grazed at the transplantation of the bell pepper s seedlings without previous soil preparation. The same fertilization and cultural practices permitted by the agro ecological handling, was used in both systems. The two systems tested, received sprinkler irrigation, and the determination of the water s blade, was made by monitoring with TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry), calibrated for the soil conditions of the experimental area. The splits were also monitorated by a tensiometer at a 50 cm. deep. Collects were made at intervals of 14 days, with the aim of foliar area evaluation, biomass accumulation by the parts of the plant, along the entire cycle, being also evaluated the crop production at the two systems of soiling. By the adjustment of the IAF (Foliar Area Indices ) and the biomass accumulated by the plant at the two systems of planting in function of accumulated day-degree (GDA), was verified that 1533 GDA was necessary to complete the productive cycle, reaching the top of accumulated biomass at 1059 and 1148 GDA, at PC and PD respectivement. There were no differences between the systems of planting, in respect of the growth rate and the productivity, however the PD system gave less competition between spontaneous vegetation and the bell pepper crop, reducing in 60% the necessity of hand labor at the firsts weddings. The PD system raise the efficiency of the use of water (EUA) by the crop reducing in 47,5 mm. the blade applied during its cycle, in relation of PC. The irrigation handling using TDR, provide an meaning EUA of 4,4 Kg.m-3, above the means of 1,5 to 3,0Kg.m-3, recommended by Doorenbos & Kassam (1994). The culture coefficients (Kc) recommended for the bell pepper crop, were evaluated together with the calculated coefficients using some methodologies proposed in this work, and was noted that the estimated Kc s values of the production cycles (ETc cycle) and by the Kc curve (graphic ETc) estimated during the culture cycle, were more appropriated for the calculation of the evapotranspiration of the crop. The estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ETo), by the pan class A method, made possible means close to those estimated by the Penman-Monteith model witch is recommended by FAO as standard. Therefore, the pan class A method, can be utilized in the estimated ETo, at same conditions of the experiment when there are no data of climate for the Penman-Monteith model use. Associated tensiometry and TDR for irrigation management, showed to be an essential practice when looking for raising the efficiency of the use of water.

Comportement thermo-hygro-mécanique différé des feuillus : des sciences du bois à l'ingénierie / Delayed thermo-hygro mechanical behavior of hardwoods : from wood sciences to engineering

Varnier, Maximin 15 March 2019 (has links)
The design and verification of timber structures, for use in Civil Engineering, is governed by the European standard Eurocode 5. It allows to size any structure element according to the load applied to it and assumptions about its environment. Essentially coordinated by the Nordic timber industry, this standard is based on the exclusive use of softwoods. However, French country has the largest hardwood forest in Europe. Today, these species have their place in timber structures by considering, for example, natural durability properties. Unfortunately, these species are not today considered in design rules. The EFEUR5 project, funded by the National Research Agency, aims to respond to this problem by doing work like those already carried out for softwoods. Thus, the work objectives are for understanding and modeling the long-term mechanical behavior of French hardwood species like oak, beech and poplar. In support of these species, Douglas fir is added as the conifer reference. The study starts with the anatomical structure analysis of the of the species studied. The objective of this analysis is to highlight the differences between these four species. Because the long-term mechanical behavior depends on moisture content, we must first determine the evolution of moisture in the section of a structural element. For this, it is presented in this chapter an innovative experimental protocol for determining the diffusion properties of a test tube located outdoors. The identification of the diffusion properties carried out we propose a study of the sensitivity of the water behavior differences on a structural element. The implementation of the evolution of moisture within a structure element, regardless of its geometry and environment, we present the different physical phenomena involved when creeping a structural element and their implementation in a code with finite elements. Next, we describe the completion of two four-point bending benches at the metric scale of hardwood and Douglas-fir beams. The instrumentation allows to analyze their deferred behavior according to their environment. In a second step, these numerical data are used to determine the hydro viscoelastic properties enabled, by inverse analysis. Thus, a comparison of the viscoelastic properties between these four species is presented. We conclude this study with a proposal for a new approach for considering the delayed mechanical behavior of structural elements. The approach consists in the determination of the long-term behavior through a reference behavior. The prediction of long-term deflection is then defined from the average humidity of the study element. This approach makes it possible to report both the geometry of the beam and its initial humidity.

Balanço hídrico em povoamento de eucalipto com diferentes densidades de plantas em argissolo / Water balance in eucalyptus stand with different plant densities in a hapludalf

Consensa, Claudine Ohana Barcellos 28 February 2015 (has links)
Eucalyptus plantations have increased significantly in recent times, but the productivity of forests are very sensitive to the availability of natural resources such as water, nutrients and light. In order to assess the water dynamics and characterize water flows in soil in a eucalyptus plantation in replacement of native grassland, there was a study in the city of São Francisco de Assis, RS, located in the “Bioma Pampa. Different densities were evaluated: 3,5x3,5m; 3,5x1,75m; 1,75x1,75m and 1,75x0,75m. The overall distribution of rainfall internal precipitation, straining the trunk interception losses of the canopy the and soil volumetric water content were evaluated during a period of one year. Three pluviometers were installed in the field area to measure and collect global precipitation. To measure the internal precipitation, 36 pluviometers were installed inside the plantation and 36 collectors were used (in selected trees) to determine the stemflow. The soil volumetric water content was monitored continuously to a depth of 2.10 m, using an automated TDR. The evapotranspiration was determined by the water balance equation, using the mass conservation method. The relationship between the biomass increase and the water amount transpired in different planting spacing, allow estimating the efficiency of water use by eucalyptus trees. The effective rainfall is higher in a narrower spacing plant, due to the increased water intake by stemflow, which results in lower treetop interception. The interception rate is lower in higher rainfall and decreases with increasing density of trees in the settement. The average evapotranspiration ranged from 4.0 to 4.5 mm day-1, with similar values among different planting spacings and is reduced in low-rainfall periods. There were no adverse effects on water resources and soil water regime due to the eucalyptus replacing natural herbaceous vegetation reforestation in Pampa Biome, evidenced by the soil water content that never was less than the value of permanent wilting point (1.5MPa). The water efficient use of Eucalyptus dunnii with 6 years old in the “Pampa biome” region varies from 3.27 to 2.40 g L-1.

Our hypothesis was: interpretations that reduced indigenous people´s rights and imposed few condition to the exercise of discretion by public powers would be followed by discourses of development worried about economic growth; on the other hand, interpretation that recognized the indigenous people´s rights to political participation and imposed wide conditions to the exercise of discretion by public powers would not be followed by any discourse of development. Our conclusion partially confirmed our initial hypothesis, as follows: first, there seems to be a trend to less conditions to the exercise of discretion by public powers and reduced rights recognized to indigenous people when discourses of development appears; however, some discourses of development were followed by constitutional interpretations that recognized rights to indigenous people and that imposed wide conditions to the exercise of discretion by public powers.

Brazil is a major producer and exporter of agricultural commodities and a world power in terms of biodiversity and water resources. With the ongoing process of land-use intensification, it becomes increasingly important to investigate and promote potential synergies between agriculture and natural resources conservation, mostly represented through the concept of Ecosystem Services (ES). Therefore, economic instruments such as Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) are an alternative to ensure the maintenance of ecological processes concomitant to agricultural activity. The new version of the Brazilian Forest Code (BFC nº 12651/2012) of the Brazilian Environmental Legislation (BEL) predicts payment or incentives for the conservation of ecosystems that provide services. However, the text of this law leaves gaps regarding implementation mechanisms. Based on these aspects, this dissertation addresses three chapters on ES and PES, the first of which is a general presentation of the theme and the methodology used in the following chapters. The chapter 2 begins the investigation of the services the most relevance provided in the areas of sugarcane and food production in Rio Claro (inside sugarcane belt in São Paulo state), according farmers’ perspective of these two groups. As results, both groups show perspectives of synergy, but also significant distinctions regarding the perception on the ES provided in the different landscapes. The services relative to local climate regulation and water maintenance are important for agricultural development, farmers and urban population well-being, overall. While pollination, seed dispersal and pest control were services recognized only by food farmers. Therefore, political point of view of farmers and decision-makers from Rio Claro municipality, referring to the operationalization of the SA, converged in payments destined to the preservation of forest remnants of compulsory custody (i.e. Permanent Preservation Area-PPA and Legal Reserve- LR) in order to protect the water springs. Therefore, political point of view of farmers and decision-makers from Rio Claro municipality, referring to the operationalization of the ES converged in payments destined to the preservation of forest remnants of compulsory custody (i.e. Permanent Preservation Area-PPA and Legal Reserve- LR) in order to protect the water springs. Nevertheless, there were opinion conflicts among the actors, supposing that public authorities decide to implement PES schemes that only contemplate producers with PPA and LR deficits, in detriment of those who have always been in agreement with LAB. This, in turn, cam characterize social and economic externalities in the context of public policy. Finally, in chapter 3, the comparison of PES experiences between Brazil and Scotland showed us that, the integration of agricultural, environmental and economic public policy with a common and clear financing fund helps to attenuate bureaucratic processes of budgetary management and reduces the conflicts between payers and beneficiaries in local PES projects. In additional, it was concluded which, the study participatory approach, involving several social actors, among them the scientific body, made possible to comprehension of the different actor’s perspective at the local level either agricultural of large-scale (sugarcane) or familiar scale (food production), as well as, of decision making for national ES requirements. Thus, the study demonstrates need of various and complexes steps to ES operationalization and its possibility in the management of natural resources, in reason of the expansion of agricultural commodities, as well as, in local where there is accelerated loss of ES. Therefore, the study is relevant for the elaboration of public policies aimed at the implementation of PES in the context of agricultural development and degraded landscapes. / FAPESP: 2014/08345-5
