No. of bitstreams: 1 WellingtonSLJ_DISSERT.pdf: 3368256 bytes, checksum: e1e3e514061bb4417f8c184646d513ee (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-07 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The vast hidric wealth of Brazil gets its watersheds more susceptible to impacts that compromise the water quality, affecting the ecosystem stability of aquatic environments. The decrease in the quality of water resources also results in a decrease of its multiple uses, especially in tourist areas of the coast, where the continuous flow of people to these sites increases even further the probability of inappropriate behavior of both tourists and local residents. Studies regarding the microbiological communities are still scarce, especially on the free-living protozoa that play unique roles in the food chain of aquatic ecosystems. Due to the large role played by this group of microorganisms in aquatic environments, the present study aimed at identifying the genus and species of free-living protozoa present in two sections of the Pium River, east coast of Rio Grande do Norte, making an association between the its occurrence and trophic conditions of the environment in which they are, also checking the bioindicator capacity of these organisms in water quality. It also aimed to conduct a survey with students to identify the main difficulties regarding the knowledge of free-living protozoa and hydric transmission diseases in two public schools near the river studied in the Pium district, county of Parnamirim. The survey was analyzed by means of questionnaires at both schools. Students identified several activities developed Pium river, highlighting its multifunctionality and importance to the region. A total of 76 taxa of free-living protozoa was recorded, of these, 33 were ciliates, 19 flagellates and 24 sarcodia. The spatial and temporal patterns of these organisms to both points studied revealed the bioindicator potentiality of some effective species identified. However, knowledge about the free-living protozoa proved quite lagged, presenting misconceptions that show them as pathogenic organisms exclusively, totally disregarding their ecological role. In order to remedy the flaws existing in students in relation to the functional role of protozoa, workshops were planned on these microorganisms while also addressing issues related to hydric transmission diseases through lectures, recreational activities and interactive presentations. These practical activities of Science Education had the goal of bringing students the context of local water resources, aiming to promote a greater clarification regarding of the functional role of free-living protozoa in aquatic environments / A vasta riqueza h?drica do Brasil deixa suas bacias hidrogr?ficas mais suscet?veis a impactos que comprometam a qualidade da ?gua, afetando a estabilidade ecossist?mica dos ambientes aqu?ticos.

Epilepsia espontânea em Trinomys yonenagae (Rodentia, Echimyidae): ocorrência e comportamento / Spontaneous epilepsy in trinomys yonenagae (rodentia, echimyidae): occurrence and behavior

Laís Mendes Ruiz Cantano 02 July 2013 (has links)
We present data and discuss the possibility that: a) the seizures presented by Trinomys yonenagae in the wild and in captivity are spontaneous and idiopathic, and b) they may be due to evolutionary processes. Epilepsy was characterized in this species in captivity from a survey started 16 years ago, made up of parents and descendants from six colonies of T. yonenagae collected in the Caatinga of Ibiraba (BA), and adults (129.90 ± 5.92 g) and pups born in captivity in a total of 295 individuals. The prevalence and incidence in individuals with epilepsy (EE) were estimated and seizures were analyzed by behavioral manifestations, based on Racine´s scale. Locomotion and anxiety indexes (open-field test, n = 35), as well as aspects of breeding (n = 11) and physiological indicators (balance food and water, n = 6), important to fitness were measured. Only two colonies showed EE, representing 9% and 28% of births. Approximately 10% of total individuals (165 and 130 ) are EE (n = 29, 14 and 15 ), and the represent 52 and 48%. In the last five years prevalence is 20-30%, and incidence ranged from 2 to 10 cases/ year. Seizures are only observed in adults (n = 24), the lowest latency is 13 months and the frequency is variable (1 to 24 in six years). The first stage is freezing and 50% reached stage 5 of Racine´s scale. In all couples, 5-50% of puppies are EE and occurred postpartum estrus, as expected for the species. The puppies are healthy and both the average offspring per litter (1.9 ± 0.3), as well as the average number of litters per couple (6.5 ± 5.0) is equal to values presented by non-epileptic couples (NE). The open-field test indicates that descendants of EE (DE) and EE are less anxious than NE. There is no difference between EE and NE regarding food and water intake. The difference in the number of EE in the colonies, the high percentage of EE pups, and the difference in the behavior of DE indicate the genetic basis of this epilepsy. In this context, we consider that in Trinomys yonenagae the limbic epilepsy seems to not compromise the fitness, which opens possibilities to be the result of evolutionary processes involving the escalation of antipredator responses

The municipality of Pelotas, located in the south part of RS state, is responsible for 90% of peach production having adequate conditions of climate and soil for its production. One of the main problems faced by fruit farmers is the management of the peach orchard, which has been homogeneously managed, without considering the spatial and temporal variability of soil, plant and climate attributes in the peach orchard. Therefore, some aspects deserve attention from researchers, among them we can highlight the knowledge of the physical environment in which the peach tree grows. This work had as objectives: i. to evaluate the relationship between soil hydric-physical and crop attributes through the canonical correlation analysis, ii. to determine the spatial and temporal structures of soil hydric-physical, crop and climate attributes, applying geostatistics analysis. The work was conducted in an experimental area, located in the city of Morro Redondo-RS, cultivated with 18 line peach crops, cv. Esmeralda, totaling 1,450 plants. In this area was established a experimental grid consisted of 101 experimental peach trees. At a distance of 0.50m to the right side of each crop tree, trenches were opened to collect disturbed and undisturbed soil samples to determine the following soil hydric-physical attributes, in the 0.00-0.10m and 0.10-0.20m soil layers: sand, silt and clay contents, soil bulk density, soil total porosity, soil macro- and micro-porosities, and volumetric soil water content. We also evaluated the following peach crop attributes in the years of 2010 and 2011: trunk diameter, size of the fruit/plant, total number of fruits/plant, fresh mass of fruits, fruit firmness, brix content and crop productivity. The attributes of climate air temperature and relative humidity were also evaluated in the peach orchard. All data sets were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. The correlation between soil and crop attributes was evaluated by canonical correlation analysis. The spatial and temporal variability structures of all data sets were evaluated by geostatistics as well as the relationship between them. Results show that the canonical correlation analysis identified the highest correlation coefficients of soil micro-porosity and clay content variables and peach productivity, and that the geostatistical analysis allowed establishing homogeneous management zones of soil, crop and climate attributes as well as to infer, visually, spatial inter-relationships between variables. The association of soil, crop and climate maps indicates that future differentiated managements of agricultural practices on the peach orchard should be based on the spatial distribution of these variables aiming rational water and fertilizer applications to preserve natural resources in the agricultural farmers.

Étude du comportement hygrothermique de matériaux céramiques réfractaires à liants alumineux pour le confinement de l'aluminium liquide / Study of the hygrothermal behavior of refractory ceramic materials based on aluminous binders for containment of liquid aluminum

Maaroufi, Mohamed-Ali 10 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to find solutions to minimize as much as possible the presence of micro-porosities in conventional and new aerospace alloys. These micro-porosities resulting especially from the reaction of the molten aluminum, during the casting phase, with the hydrogen provided by the steam contained in the refractory castables. Most of these castables are composites obtained with hydraulic binders based on aluminous cements. Firstly, a physico-chemical and mineralogical characterization of the basic materials and processed products was performed. Then, the thermo-hydric behavior of different castables and hardened cement pastes (principal source of the physical water and the chemical water) was then studied by moisture pick up tests made in various hygrothermal conditions, including at high temperatures (300 °C). It was shown that the hydric variations amplitudes strongly depend on the binder’s nature, in particular on its alumina content. The phenomena of physisorption and chemisorption are mobilized. Meanwhile, the transient thermal behavior in the time through the thickness of a refractory launder was modeled as a first step to quantify the water vapor transfer in the materials. Continuous measurements of temperature and pressure were obtained on pastes and concretes samples variously packged, placed in contact with a heated metal band maintained at 700 °C. Other measurements were made. They consisted into immersing samples (cement pastes and castables), previously stored in different hygrothermal conditions in liquid aluminum, in order to compare their reactivity in terms of release of hydrogen, oxygen and water vapor

[pt] DEGRADAÇÃO AMBIENTAL NO COMPLEXO LAGUNAR DE JACAREPAGUÁ NA CIDADE DO RIO DE JANEIRO: O PAPEL DA GOVERNANÇA / [en] ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION OF THE JACAREPAGUÁ LAGOON SYSTEM IN THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO: THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNANCE

SILVANA DI IULIO MOREIRA 26 September 2022 (has links)
[en] The major economy of the city of Rio de Janeiro is tied into its tourism and leisure industry, due to its unique natural beauty of its landscape. The unique combination of mountains meeting the sea has earned it the title given by UNESCO of the First Urban and Cultural Landscape declared World Heritage. This takes into consideration the area s natural and urban monuments of the South zone, in particular, but recognizes the unique relationship between man and nature, and the balance between natural and man-made elements. It considers the environmental and social interaction, which enables its citizens to enjoy various forms of leisure activities associated with the area s unique natural beauty. However, despite this designation, on the west side of the city, there are found other natural beauties, including the coastal lagoons of the Jacarepaguá lagoon system. But here, the environment has been completely neglected by the government. In these lagoons, people cannot fish, sail, or swim. The use of these ecological sites is prohibited due to the contamination of the waters. A natural heritage for all, the waters have become degraded with the presence of raw sewage, which causes the foul smell, disease, and the reduced presence of fauna and flora. Unregulated construction on its banks and on the edges of its tributaries has caused these bodies of water to become filled with garbage, sand, and all sorts of debris, besides the sewage. From its primitive origin until the implementation of the Urbanist Lúcio Costa s plan, the region remained preserved. Corrêa (1933), testified crystal clear water lagoons and flooded green fields where fishing, hunting, and natural resources were abundant. However, even at this early date, he observed the degradation of forests and the hunting of animals out of control, and recorded a lack of regulation by the governing body, the Water and Sewage Inspectorate. He therefore suggested, inspired by the laws of the Office International pour la Protection de la Nature, the creation of a biological reserve for Marapendi lagoon, realized in 1965.

Environmental and Digital Data Analysis of the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) Landscape Position Classification System

Sandy, Alexis Emily 27 July 2006 (has links)
The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) is the definitive source for wetland resources in the United States. The NWI production unit in Hadley, MA has begun to upgrade their digital map database, integrating descriptors for assessment of wetland functions. Updating is conducted manually and some automation is needed to increase production and efficiency. This study assigned landscape position descriptor codes to NWI wetland polygons and correlated polygon environmental properties with public domain terrain, soils, hydrology, and vegetation data within the Coastal Plain of Virginia. Environmental properties were applied to a non-metric multidimensional scaling technique to identify similarities within individual landscape positions based on wetland plant indicators, primary and secondary hydrology indicators, and field indicators of hydric soils. Individual NWI landscape position classes were linked to field-validated environmental properties. Measures provided by this analysis indicated that wetland plant occurrence and wetland plant status obtained a stress value of 0.136 (Kruskal's stress measure = poor), which is a poor indicator when determining correlation among wetland environmental properties. This is due principally to the highly-variable plant distribution and wetland plant status found among the field-validated sites. Primary and secondary hydrology indicators obtained a stress rating of 0.097 (Kruskal's stress measure = good) for correlation. The hydrology indicators measured in this analysis had a high level of correlation with all NWI landscape position classes due the common occurrence of at least one primary hydrology indicator in all field validated wetlands. The secondary indicators had an increased accuracy in landscape position discrimination over the primary indicators because they were less ubiquitous. Hydric soil characteristics listed in the 1987 Manual and NTCHS field indicators of hydric soils proved to be a relatively poor indicator, based on Kruskal's stress measure of 0.117, for contrasting landscape position classes because the same values occurred across all classes. The six NWI field–validated landscape position classes used in this study were then further applied in a public domain digital data analysis. Mean pixel attribute values extracted from the 180 field-validated wetlands were analyzed using cluster analysis. The percent hydric soil component displayed the greatest variance when compared to elevation and slope curvature, streamflow and waterbody, Cowardin classification, and wetland vegetation type. Limitations of the soil survey data included: variable date of acquisition, small scale compared to wetland size, and variable quality. Flow had limitations related to its linear attributes, therefore is often found insignificant when evaluating pixel values that are mean of selected pixels across of wetland landscape position polygons. NLCD data limitations included poor quality resolution (large pixel size) and variable classification of cover types. The three sources of information that would improve wetland mapping and modeling the subtle changes in elevation and slope curvature that characterize wetland landscapes are: recent high resolution leaf-off aerial photography, high-quality soil survey data, and high-resolution elevation data. Due to the data limitations and the choice of variables used in this study, development of models and rules that clearly separate the six different landscape positions was not possible, and thus automation of coding could not be attempted. / Master of Science

Época de colheita, irrigação, fitoquímica e atividades carrapaticida e fungicida do óleo essencial de genótipos de Lippia gracilis Schauer

Cruz, Elizangela Mércia de Oliveira 15 March 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of harvesting time and water stress on the chemical composition of the essential oil and to test the activities against ticks and fungus of the essential oil of L. gracilis. For the analysis of harvest season the plant material was collected from seven genotypes of L. gracilis at the Research Farm "Campus Rural da UFS", in the rainy and dry seasons. The experiment testing water stress was conducted in the dry season. The extraction of essential oils was performed in the Laboratory of Phytotechnology of the UFS through hydrodistillation. Chemical analysis of the essential oil performed using GC-MS in the Laboratory of Chromatography of the UFS. For the activity tests against ticks package larvae and immersion of engorged tick Rhipicephalus microplus in different concentrations of essential oil, thymol or carvacrol. To test of fungicidal activity, the essential oil at different concentrations was added to PDA medium. Each plate was inoculated with mycelia culture of Thielaviopis paradoxa. The essential oil of L. gracilis presented two distinct chemotypes, one genotype LGRA-106 presenting as major compound thymol and the other genotypes presenting carvacrol as major compound. The leaves provided essential oil with an average grade of 1.55% in the rainy season and 2.09% in the dry season. In the rainy season there was no significant difference in both the yield and the content. The chemical composition of essential oils L. gracilis showed high levels of terpenes, 92% in the rainy season and 96% in the dry season. In the experiment with irrigation the values of content and yield of all genotypes were smaller when compared without irrigation. In general, the species L. gracilis, for the presence of water in the soil, provides stability in the chemical composition of the essential oil regardless of season, since plants subjected to irrigation, even in the dry season, the essential oil produced in quantity and quality similar to the rainy season. The essential oil of L. gracilis exhibits high activity against ticks, proven by lethal concentrations of genotypes LGRA-201 (1.31 mg.mL-1) and LGRA-106 (4.66 mg.mL-1), demonstrating efficiency in the control of this parasite. The tests showed that the concentrations 0.45; 0.91 and 2.75 mg.mL-1 of all genotypes of L. gracilis completely inhibited the development of the pathogen T. paradoxa, corresponding to a percentage of mycelium growth inhibition of 100%. The concentration of 0.18 mg.mL-1 of essential oil was sufficient to significantly reduce the number of spores of T. paradoxa. The minimal fungicidal concentration T. paradoxa was found between concentrations from 0.80 to 0.98 mg.mL-1 for the essential oils and 0.26 mg.mL-1 for carvacrol and 0.35 mg.mL-1 to thymol.

Petitjean, Caroline 17 June 2013 (has links)
This study investigates the effects of the conversion of tropical forest to cultivation on soil n2o emissions. The study was carried out over a complete crop cycle at the experimental site combi (french guianese coast). Nitrous oxide fluxes were obtained in the field and by conducting simulations with the noe model. Undisturbed tropical rainforest was compared to rainforest that had been converted to agricultural land using the ‘chop-and-mulch’ method. The ‘chop-and-mulch’ method is a fire-free method used for vegetation clearing combining the mechanical felling of trees with the mulching of small vegetation. Agricultural land included either mowed grassland or soybean/fertilised maize crop rotation. For croplands the two cultivation practices employed were: conventional seeding (using an offset disc harrow, without cover plants) or direct seeding (no till, with cover plants). The main results of this study are: rainforest soil at combi produced low n2o emissions; rainforest converted to mowed grassland using the 'chop-and-mulch’ method did not lead to a significant increase in n2o emissions between the 19th and 31st months after conversion; the conversion of rainforest to croplands induced a significant increase in soil n2o emissions due to the application of fertiliser and the modification of soil parameters (bulk density, temperature, volumetric moisture); n2o emissions from agricultural practices with no-till were no higher than those produced by conventional agricultural practices using an offset disc harrow; and, the introduction of an hydric hysteresis into the noe model constitutes a promising improvement to estimate in situ n2o emissions.
