Minimizing Transformer No-Load Losses at Hydropower Plants : A Study of Effects from Transformer Switch-Off During Stand-by Operation

Hydropower is the most important power balancing resource in the Swedish electrical power system, regulating the power supply to match the load. Consequently, several hydropower plants have periods of stand-by operation where the power production is absent but where several devices within a plant are still active. Such a device is the step-up power transformer, which during stand-by operation still generates no-load energy losses. These losses can accumulate to a considerable amount of energy and costs during the long technical lifetime of the apparatus. One option to minimize these no-load energy losses is by turning the transformer off when its generating unit is in stand-by operation. However, when this transformer operational change has been explained to experts in the field, the most common response has been that a more frequent reenergizing of a transformer leads to higher risks for errors or transformer breakdowns. This study aimed to analytically investigate three effects from this operational change. First, the potential of fatigue failure for the windings due to the increased sequences of inrush current. Secondly, the thermal cycling as a consequence of change in present losses. Lastly, the energy and economic saving potentials for hydropower plants where this operational adjustment is applied. The study used both established as well as analytical tools explicitly created for this study. These were then applied on currently active transformers in different plant categories in Fortum’s hydropower fleet.  The study primarily showed three things. Firstly, risk of fatigue failure due to the increased presence of inrush currents did not affect the transformer’s technical lifetime. Secondly, the thermal cycling changes were slightly larger with absent no-load losses during stand-by operation. The average temperature for the transformer decreased, which in general is seen as a positive indicator for a longer insulation lifetime and thus the transformer’s technical lifetime. Finally, the created frameworks showed the potential of saving energy and money for all plant categories, where the potential grew with the installed production capacity and the stand-by operation timeshare. Despite the simplifications made to describe the complex reality of a transformer operating in a hydropower plant, this thesis contributes to lay a foundation for future investigation of an easy adjustment to avoid unnecessary energy losses and costs for transformers in hydropower plants.

The "on-paper" hydropower boom

Der weltweite Wasserkraftboom wird entweder mit seinen Vorteilen (Hochwasserschutz, Wirtschaftswachstum, erneuerbare Energieerzeugung) oder negativen Auswirkungen betrachtet (Zerstörung intakter Lebensräume, Verdrängung der Bevölkerung und Bedrohung von Existenzgrundlagen). Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht den Wasserkraftboom besser zu verstehen wie auch den Fakt, dass dieser bislang nicht zum Bau großer Wasserkraftwerke geführt hat. Eine Fallstudie wurde von Juli bis Oktober 2016 und Juli bis August 2017 in Bosnien und Herzegowina durchgeführt. Auch dort ist die Zahl der gebauten Wasserkraftprojekte im Vergleich zur Zahl der geplanten Projekte vernachlässigbar gering. Qualitative Forschungsmethoden wurden angewendet und drei wesentliche Schlussfolgerungen gezogen. Erstens (Kap. II) wird erläutert, warum der Boom in Bosnien und Herzegowina nicht in dem vorgesehenen Ausmaß stattfinden wird und inwieweit das Phänomen einer Übertragung auf globalen Maßstab standhält. Zweitens (Kap. III) wird deutlich, wie v.a. kleinere Wasserkraftprojekte von Akteuren zum persönlichen Vorteil genutzt werden. Korruption ist in diesem Sektor weit verbreitet und eng mit dem Diskurs über nachhaltige Entwicklung im Land verbunden. Die kleinen Wasserkraftprojekte schaffen einen sicheren Raum für korrupte Akteure. Schließlich (Kap. IV) wurde untersucht, wie die BewohnerInnen eines kleinen Dorfes in Bosnien und Herzegowina ihre Vorstellungen von Nachhaltigkeit rund um die Wasserkraft verändert haben. Dies taten sie in Übereinstimmung mit sich ändernden sozioökonomischen Bedingungen. Dieses Kapitel illustriert, wie die Flexibilität des Begriffs Nachhaltigkeit für marginalisierte lokale BewohnerInnen von Vorteil sein kann. Die vorliegende Dissertation zeigt, dass der Wasserkraftboom, obwohl bislang weitgehend nur "auf dem Papier" existent, dennoch bereits reale materielle Konsequenzen für nachhaltige Entwicklungsstrategien, Korruption und das lokale Leben mit sich bringt. / The global hydropower boom is a well-known phenomenon. It is either considered for its benefits to sustainable development or cautioned against its negative socio-environmental impacts. Yet the number of existing hydropower projects is not very high globally. This thesis thus aspires to develop a better understanding of the global hydropower boom and why this boom has not resulted in large-scale hydropower plant construction. The hydropower boom in Bosnia and Herzegovina was selected as the object of study. There, the number of constructed hydropower projects is negligible in comparison to the number of planned projects. Qualitative research methods were used to explore the case in depth. The data was collected between July and October, 2016 and between July and August, 2017. Three main conclusions were drawn from the fieldwork conducted. Chapter II shows and explains why the hydropower boom is unlikely to take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina to the extent foreseen. It also questions the phenomenon at a global scale. Chapter III shows how small-scale hydropower projects are used by various actors for personal benefit. Corruption is rife in the sector and closely connected to the sustainable development discourse in the country. A key finding here is that small-scale hydropower projects create a safe space for corrupt actors. Chapter IV explores how the inhabitants of a small village in Bosnia and Herzegovina changed their sustainability imaginaries around hydropower. They did this in accordance with changing socio-economic conditions. This chapter thus illustrates how the flexibility of the term sustainability can be beneficial to marginalised local inhabitants. In general, this thesis, therefore, contributes to the hydropower literature. It shows that the hydropower boom is largely ‘on-paper’ but with real material consequences for sustainable development strategies, corruption, and local lives.

Then an investigation is made concerning a few different faults. Based on this investigation a choice on seal box condition and water leakage is made as problem for a more thorough examination, in which it is concluded that the turbine water leakage is larger when the turbine is put into operation. The examination ultimately results in a computer alarm for faults related to the seal box. Finally a few things are mentioned about flow measurement and pressure measurement in relation to the project as a whole.</p> / <p>Rapporten inleds med en övergripande sammanställning av möjliga tekniska fel i en vattenkraftstation och av möjliga felindikerande mätningar. Därefter görs en probleminventering av ett antal olika fel. Baserat på denna inventering väljes sedan tätningsboxkondition och läckvatten som problem för en mer ingående undersökning, vid vilken det konstateras att turbinvattenläckaget är större när turbinen är i drift. Undersökningen utmynnar sedan i ett datalarm för fel relaterade till tätningsboxar. Slutligen nämns något om flödesmätning och tryckmätning i relation till projektet i sin helhet.</p>

Šios direktyvos 6 straipsnis 2001 m. buvo perkeltas į Saugomų teritorijų įstatymą, tačiau praktinis jo nuostatų taikymas išliko apribotas, ypač šio straipsnio 3 ir 4 dalių nuostatos. Tam, kad reikalavimas dėl planų ir projektų vertinimo veiktų sklandžiai Lietuvoje, priimti Planuojamos ūkinės veiklos poveikio aplinkai vertinimo ir Teritorijų planavimo įstatymas. Tam leidžiama atlikti veiklos poveikių aplinkai vertinimą. Visos didelės ir didesnės upės (Nemunas, Neris, Merkys, Minija ir kt.) yra uždraustos ištisai planuoti ir statyti užtvankas. Draudimo teisinis pagrindas – ES aplinkosaugos direktyvos, rekomendacijos (Berno, HELCOM, IBSFC), kurias Lietuva pasirašė. All rivers (bigger) are banned for planning and building weirs. The basis of insurance are: EU directive of environment, guidelines which Lithuania signed on. There are sectors in the rivers of Nemunas or Neris where is no reserve at all and they are suitable for building weirs and hydroelectric. Trying to restore the affected dynamic balance and the ecological integrity is recommended to equip fish-ladder. The equipment should be regulated with priority and importance of passages priority too. The implementation of WFD is given to keep and to encourage the use of water power and to improve ecological conditions of water fields. The directive of the EU (2000/60/EC): to build the new hydroelectric is allowed if there are some problems such as: output of electric power, protection from the flood, navigation, water supply. Hydroelectric plants should be adjusted to a natural river run off. Suitable places might be those, which have no objections to recent acts. Inappropriate rivers are those which are in protected territory.

Hydropower development was one of the first systematic large-scale exploitations in the reindeer herding areas within Swedish borders. Therefore, this thesis departs from postcolonial approaches wherein the Swedish state policy and practice towards Sami, reindeer herders and Sápmi, the Sami homeland, is analysed as colonialism in relation to hydropower development. The study spans over the first large-scale hydropower projects in the reindeer herding area during the 1910’s and 1920’s, continuing with the decreased legal security during the second world war, and finally the opposition and opinion in the 1950’s and 1960’s, enabled by the establishment of a national association for Swedish Sami, SSR.      The industrialisation of watercourses in the reindeer herding areas were brought about by the works of an institutional framework consisting of the Water Act and the Reindeer Grazing Act together with the tutelage of a Lapp Administration. These institutions made invisible both reindeer herding as an industry and the herders rights. Authorities as well as hydropower companies acted and argued within an industrial colonial discourse. One technique was the re-writing of history and of the herders’ rights in favour of power developers. The Swedish hydropower system was built up based on cheap energy from the North, at the expense of stakeholders’ rights. This was made possible by arguing that exploitation was for the sake of ”the common good”. When reindeer herders eventually were noted in the process, reindeer herding was regarded as a vested interest and reindeer herding rights as a privilege given to the Sami by the state. In this system reindeer herders were given a more vulnerable legal position than farmers, in addition non-reindeer herding Sami were in some aspects even more affected by discriminating structures. By damming the watercourses, the grazing lands were reduced which affected the amount of herders that could practice reindeer husbandry and thereby also the amount of individuals holding Sami rights.      During the 1950’s and 1960’s the self-evidenced hydropower development was questioned by a Sami struggle for justice. With regards to Sami rights, the situation was more stagnant due to the state avoiding official investigation of certain legal issues that were object for trial. However, the industrial colonial discourse and the governing of hydropower politics were challenged and the authorities changed some of their notions of reindeer herders. Nevertheless, the Sami were denied representation and involvement in governing the finances that were aimed at alleviation of the consequences of various interferences in the herding area. / TJOAHKKÁJGÄSOS  Ådå tjátje, tjáhppis spiejildime. Rezultati ovog istraživanja<br />su pokazali da efektivno i efikasno upravljanje procesom planiranja<br />malih hidroelektrana doprinosi ostvarenju strateških ciljeva<br />upravljanja energetskim sistemom.</p> / <p>The projects concerned with small hydropower plants, which are considered<br />as a clean energy source, are expected to contribute to the economic aspect<br />of sustainable development of society as a whole. Therefore, the planning<br />process of these projects calls for particular attention. A literatura que descreve os efeitos locais de empreendimentos hidrelétricos tem recebido contribuições importantes nos últimos anos. Esses trabalhos, contudo, lançam perspectivas disciplinares sobre essa problemática. O presente estudo busca compreender tais efeitos de maneira integrada, partindo de uma perspectiva sistêmica associada à teoria da resiliência em sistemas socioecológicos. Para tal, adota o caso da usina hidrelétrica de Barra Grande, analisando de que forma a dinâmica do sistema socioecológico local diretamente afetado pela barragem transformou-se na época de sua implantação. Assim, o sistema socioecológico local fora conceitualmente modelado e caracterizado para todo o ciclo de implantação da usina de Barra Grande, por meio da coleta de dados e informações primários e secundários. Como principais resultados, estão a concentração de alterações mais significativas nas proximidades do eixo da barragem, a criação de novos atratores para o sistema econômico local, a profunda alteração de aspectos do sistema social e a depleção da resiliência dos ecossistemas afetados pela barragem. / The literature that describes the local effects of undertaking hydropower plants has received important contributions in the past few years. These efforts, however, are based on disciplinary approaches. His study aims to understand the local effects of undertaking hydropower plants in an integrated way, following a systemic approach related to the theory of social-ecological systems resilience. O accomplish that, it is adopted the case of the Barra Grande dam, analyzing the changes in the dynamics of the local social-ecological system directly affected by the dam. The local social-ecological system was conceptualy modeled and designed for the entire projects lifecycle. It was made through collecting primary and secondary data. As maisn results, there are the concentration of significant alterations in the surroundings of the dams axis, the creation of new attractors for the economic system, a deep change in the social systems aspects and the depletion of the resilience of the ecosystems directly affected by the dam.

A companhia Gerdau que construiria as barragens se preocupou em criar relações com as famílias atingidas afim de convencê-las da sua necessidade e da sua importância. No âmago das questões da luta pela terra, militantes se formaram com o MAB para reivindicar uma indenização justa. O presente trabalho pretende identificar o modelo ideal para um regulador eletrônico de velocidade por comutação de cargas de controle, com o intuito de baratear o investimento de implantação, e os custos de manutenção de uma microcentral hidroelétrica. Seguindo este mesmo objetivo de barateamento de custos, o trabalho mostra também que é possível se encontrar um tipo de turbina hidráulica e um tipo de máquina elétrica ideais para esta utilização. O trabalho faz a descrição dos vários tipos de turbinas utilizadas de acordo com as alturas de queda d\'agua e com as vazões que se enquadram dentro do conceito de microcentral. A seguir é abordado um estudo dos principais tipos de geradores elétricos, enfatizando-se aqueles que são mais viáveis para este tipo de aplicação. Depois é feita um descrição dos principais tipos de reguladores de velocidade, desde os clássicos eletromecânicos utilizados em centrais convencionais, até os chamados reguladores eletrônicos de velocidade que são utilizados tanto em centrais convencionais, como em microcentrais. Finalmente, faz-se um modelo matemático para uma microcentral a partir de simplificações de um modelo de uma central convencional para compará-lo com modelo identificado a partir dos ensaios realizados em campo. / This present work deals with micro hydropower electric systems and has its enphasis on the study of the turbine speed regulation by a electronic system. The proposed speed regulator is of local commutation type, where the constant speed is achieved by the constant demand of energy from the generator. The study presents a bibliographical revision seting up the state of art on micro-hydropower. Following this revision, the system modelling is studied. Theoretical and practical results are used the system modelling. Substancial cost reduction may be achieved using this technology in many ways: civil engineering works; elimination of the conventional turbine speed governor - not only because the governor is itself an expensive item, but because its removal permits simplification of the turbine, particularly where high efficiency is not a dominant concern. The simplified turbine design may lend itself to large-volume production at low unit cost, or it may permit manufacture in a Third World workshop using local labour and readily available materials. Finnaly this work implements a PID controller for regulation the system frequency.

A influência do assoreamento na geração de energia hidrelétrica: estudo de caso na Usina de Três Irmãos - SP / The influence of silting in the generation of hydroelectric energy: case study at Três Irmãos power plant - SP

Com a crescente demanda de energia elétrica há a necessidade da criação de novas fontes de energia e otimização das fontes já existentes. No caso de países que apresentam uma matriz energética predominantemente hidrelétrica como o Brasil, com grandes usinas e reservatórios, os estudos sedimentológicos e os levantamentos batimétricos se apresentam como importantes ferramentas para melhorar o planejamento e o gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos e energéticos. Atualmente, muitos reservatórios hidrelétricos operam com dados defasados devido, principalmente, ao contínuo processo de assoreamento dos reservatórios. Este fato faz com que as políticas de gestão e operação destes reservatórios sejam realizadas a partir de dados diferentes dos encontrados na realidade. Neste contexto, a dissertação apresenta um estudo de caso no Reservatório de Três Irmãos (SP), onde foi realizado um levantamento batimétrico em 2008, e a partir da comparação dos dados obtidos neste levantamento com os dados fornecidos pela concessionária de energia, de 1975, foi possível estimar as perdas de volume total, útil e morto do reservatório que correspondem a 14,3%, 14,5% e 14,2%, respectivamente. A partir da observação destas modificações nos dados operacionais do reservatório em estudo, foi realizada a simulação da operação do reservatório e da usina hidrelétrica por meio do software AcquaNet, com a intenção de analisar qual a interferência do assoreamento do reservatório na geração de energia elétrica, durante o período de 1993 a 2008. Com os resultados foi constatado que a diminuição do volume útil do reservatório (devido ao assoreamento) acarretou na redução da energia gerada pela usina durante o período analisado. Também foi possível estimar as perdas financeiras da concessionária de energia com a redução da produção energética. Foram sugeridas, ainda, algumas medidas preventivas e corretivas para a redução do processo de assoreamento do reservatório em estudo. / With the increasing demand of energy, it is necessary to create new sources and optimize the ones that already exist. In the case of countries that present an energy matrix predominantly hydroelectric such as Brazil, where there are huge power plants and reservoirs, the studies on sedimentation and beating surveys are presented as important tools to sharpen the planning and the management of water and energy resources. Currently, most of the hydroelectric reservoirs operate in gapped data, due to, mainly, the continuing process of reservoirs silting. This makes management policies and operation of these reservoirs be performed from data that differ from the ones found in reality. In this context, this dissertation presents a case study at the Três Irmãos Reservoir (SP), where a beating survey was carried out in 2008, and, from the comparison of the data revealed in that survey with the data provided by the power utility in 1975, it was possible to estimate the losses of total capacity, live storage and void volume of the reservoir, which correspond to 14,3%, 14,5% e 14,2%, respectively. From the observation of these operational data modification of the reservoir under study was performed the simulate of the operation of the reservoir and hydroelectric plant with the employing of the AcquaNet software with the intention to look into the interference of silting of the reservoir in generate electricity during the period 1993 to 2008. With the results was found that the decrease in the capacity of the reservoir (due to siltation) resulted in the reduction of energy generated by the plant during the period analyzed. With this verification, it was also possible to estimate the financial losses of the power utility with the reduction of energy production. Was suggested also, some preventive and corrective measures to reduce siltation process in the reservoir under study.
