Adoption of cloud computing to enhance project management processes and outcomes in South Africa in the private sector

Pekane, Ayanda January 2015 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Information Technology Department of Information Technology in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at Cape Peninsula University of Technology / Project Management (PM) is defined as the application of tools and techniques to direct the use of diverse resources toward the accomplishment of a task within time, cost and quality constraints. In the information age, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as an enabling tool, resource and a facilitator of the PM practice. With ICT as a major enabler of efficiencies in PM, the adoption of new ICT systems and tools have improved processes and outcomes in PM. The main argument is that cloud computing has a great potential to improve efficiencies in PM. The problem at the time of writing however, was that it was not clear whether this innovation was understood and maximally exploited by the PM community of practice in South Africa. Efficiency of PM is critical to competitiveness and growth in all sectors. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore the adoption of ICT systems and tools particularly cloud computing, to advance the practical objectives PM in the private sector. Due to the socio-technical nature of the current study, the interpretivist approach together with a qualitative research method, as well as the purposive sampling technique were adopted for the study. In essence, 8 respondents consisting of 2 academic experts, 4 technology literate project managers and 2 client service providers of cloud computing were selected. Together with the Structuration Theory (ST) as an analytical framework and the content analysis technique was used to contextualise and to analyse data. Findings show an acceptable level of awareness of cloud computing in the private sector. Nevertheless, negative perceptions that may threaten the adoption of cloud computing in PM in the private sector also emerged in the findings. Otherwise, PM has gained popularity in the sector. As the findings further reflect however, standards have tended to be compromised by cynics in the discipline. Positive developments are that the project failure rate is on the decline, which is further enhanced by the adoption of new innovative technological tools and systems. Rigid organisational norms also re-enforce resistance to change. It is, thus, recommended for project managers to review cloud-computing benefits in accordance with their requirements. In conclusion then, resources have not only proved to be a significant matter in PM, but also instrumental in advancing PM efficiencies, leading to improved PM successes. In the light of emergent shortfalls however, executive managers and project managers should keep themselves informed and be open to changes that can advance the organisational course.

Ciberativismo e a dimensão comunicativa dos movimentos sociais: repertório, organização e difusão. / Cyberactivism and the communicative dimension of social movements: repertoires, organization and diffusion

Lívia Moreira de Alcântara 25 February 2014 (has links)
What is cyberactivism? How to understand the phenomenon? Different theoretical approaches from several areas have devoted attention to the this topic, generating a variety of analytical tools and empirical studies about specific aspects of its practice; at the same time this has generated a difficulty of dialogue between the theoretical interpretations and perspectives. Therefore it is necessary a reflection that allows us to think this field of discussion more broadly. Under the assumptions that the communicative dimension of cyberactivism is not new to social movements but it presupposes a new inflection as such, this paper proposes a twofold effort to understand how ICT (Information and communications technologies) impact collective action. On the one hand the proposal seeks to conduct a historical analysis which allows us to identify the centrality of communicative dimensions in the practices of social movements; on the other hand, it is proposed an interpretation of a theoretical framework that makes possible to rescue some guidelines of Theories of Social Movements (repertoires of action, organization and dynamics of diffusion), so that analytical tools can be upgraded to the understanding of contemporary collective action.

Torres, Daniel Felipe Uribe January 2015 (has links)
Agribusiness of Flowers and Ornamental Plants (FPO) in Brazil handles more than $ 5 billion a year with an annual growth rate between 8% and 16%, generating more than 206,000 direct jobs. In 2012, the trade balance of the Brazilian floriculture showed a deficit of US $ 13.468 million, due to the increase in its imports by their larger competitors MERCOSUR group, Ecuador and Colombia. The lack of implementation of information systems and control deficiencies in bottlenecks of the process, make the most of the loss that occurs in the wholesale link to originate from a lack of care during transport, the failure to keep the cold chain and logistical delays. This paper aims to launch a prospective look at this complex. The prospect of the future has always been and will be greatly appreciated by decision makers. Over the past decades, international organizations, governments, companies and nongovernmental organizations have conducted studies on future panoramas, in order to gain time to prepare to overcome your competitors and be competitive in each area. Through a current literature review focused on the analysis of the entire FPO supply chain, plus a series of interviews with experts of national and international floriculture, analyzed activities and technological tools used in each of the processes involved in wholesale such as transport conditions, planning of deliveries and the records of the controls that guarantee the quality of the final product. With this supply were built four possible future scenarios for the wholesale sector of Brazilian FPO, based on the use and implementation of Information Technology. (1) Lirio Scenario, which shows the situation where the WM will be the largest OPF business of always crowded, as they carry out a restructuring of the physical complex, so with a training plan for staff handling and offer the FPO. (2) Scenario Tulip, which proposes a grouping by wholesalers with greater representation in order to generate and share information on trends, harvests and pricing. (3) Scenario Sunflower, which suggests it is analyzed the future of OPF purchase methods by the final consumer, so as to understand the different tools and market strategies that should be used by wholesale companies to retain and attract new customers. (4) Agapantho scenario that shows how the current situation in relation to investment and adoption of technology (ICT) in full sector does not change, what would entail a number of consequences for the domestic and foreign markets, further facilitating the entry international competitors to Brazil.

Milanez, Francisco Ramos January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation proposes collaborative audiovisual activities for the classroom, based on the hypothesis that they contribute to the qualification of teaching and learning processes. The objective of this study was to verify the influence of one of these activities in the learning of a sample of children. In order to contemplate this objective, a case study of qualitative and quantitative research, data collection and analysis was carried out. In the study, a fourth grade class of the Municipal Elementary School Principal Deputy Victor Issler, from Porto Alegre, was selected as the sample. The activity was adapted to the age group of these students and managed in a playful way, through a game of video production with the theme sustainable development. The data were collected from pre and post-test questionnaires, taking into account the student’s knowledge, the teacher's discourse and their interest in the activity. The textual analysis of the responses collected in the sample revealed a greater capacity of relation of these subjects with the contents worked, as well as a greater engagement in class during the process and a great interest by the format of the activity. The results showed a 100% interest rate of students participating in more audiovisual activities in class. It is considered that this study makes a small contribution to the evolution of teaching practices in Brazilian public education and in education as a whole, by demonstrating a way to update teaching and learning processes today. It was concluded that the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) through active, playful and audiovisual methodologies, intrinsic to the proposed activity, facilitated the learning of the sample, empowering students during the process and contributing to the development of useful technological skills life. This case study opens perspectives for the delineation and deepening of a broader research, the establishment of other hypotheses and from a controlled and probabilistic sampling, possible results generalizable to a larger population.

Borges, Roberto Cabral de Mello January 2012 (has links)
This work researches the use of Information and Communication Technologies that are used by advanced age adults. The main purpose is to study the usage of those technologies for educational purposes. Older adults have some limitations, have difficulties to operate the devices and have a particular behavior about the use of some modern technologies. This study shows how the seniors are using these technologies, the difficulties they felt, their expectations and how they are getting some learning helped by the technologies and its benefits to their life quality. To designate this adult group, that covers the third age and one more age segment, immediatelly below, was created the expression "Advanced Age Adult" (55 to 59 years). In order to be able to quantify the kinds, intensity of use and difficulties in using was created an index that measures how much and how these adults are using each technology, thus allowing a comparison and classification. Through this index can be determined statistically which factors influence whether or not the use of technologies and inferred profile and behavior of the population studied. Known this profile can make recommendations and associations with technology types of activities that can promote some kind of learning for these users and by this, they can add one more component to their quality of life.

The impact of social media on the performance of microfinance institutions in developing countries : a quantitative approach

Daowd, Ahmad January 2016 (has links)
Over the last few decades, microfinance industry has played an essential role in alleviating poverty level and helping the underprivileged, by enabling access to myriads of financial services. Statistics from the World Bank reveals that, currently, only 4% of the underprivileged were served out of the 3 billion potential clients. Such results were due to several claims, particularly the operational and financial challenges faced by the MFIs in the constant flux, inviting more attentions towards its performance. While explicit focuses were given by many researchers towards mobile banking and Information Communication Technology (ICT) and online services in improving the MFIs performance, the study on how Social Media, as a rapidly growing online phenomenon, could affect the MFIs performance remain scarce. Hence, this study was aimed at investigating and clarifying the impact of social media on MFIs, based on four dimensional performance indicators: efficiency, financial sustainability, portfolio quality, and outreach. A model was developed utilising Resource Based-View (RBV) Theory, to test the relationship between social media application and organisational performance. A quantitative approach has been adopted employing from web-based questionnaires, to collect data from MFIs employees in developing countries such as Kenya, India and Jordan. Structured Equation Modelling (SEM) technique (i.e. SPSS and AMOS 20 software) was used as a tool to analyse the responses. Results revealed a significant influence of the social media over the MFIs performance, offering valuable insights to both researchers and practitioners in the domain of micro-finance, as well as social media – conforming that the adoption of social media as marketing, advertising and communication tools could significantly improve the MFIs performance. Keywords: Microfinance, Microfinance Institution Performance, Social Media, Resource Based View Theory.
