The myth of the universal user : pursuing a cultural variable in ICT design for conflict management through quantitative analysis : implications from a Ugandan case study

Sutherlin, Gwyneth Burke January 2014 (has links)
This study took a novel experimental approach from the field of cognitive linguistics to quantitatively describe the impact of culture on the use of mobile information and communication technology (ICT) in the context of peace and conflict. Beginning with the hypothesis that ICT reflects a mono-cultural perspective for collecting and organizing information, this study tested how a failure to adapt at a cognitive level resulted in distorted narratives. This distortion has problematic implications for democratic participation in postconflict contexts and in data aggregation initiatives that inform policy decisions related to governance, election monitoring, human rights abuse reporting, and conflict management more broadly. Fieldwork from the Acholi region of Uganda supported the conclusion that current ICT tools used in conflict management contexts fundamentally distort the narratives they were designed to collect at a cognitive level. Findings from this research also presented avenues for software development around a new variable for cultural communication preference.

Visualization of Vehicle Usage Based on Position Data for Root-Cause Analysis : A Case Study in Scania CV AB

Sagala, Ramadhan Kurniawan January 2018 (has links)
Root cause analysis (RCA) is a process in Scania carried out to understand the root cause of vehicle breakdowns. It is commonly done by studying vehicle warranty claims and failure reports, identifying patterns that are correlated to the breakdowns, and then analyzing the root cause based on those findings. Vehicle usage is believed to be one of the factors that may contribute towards the breakdowns, but the data on vehicle usage is not commonly utilized in RCA. This thesis investigates a way to help RCA process by introducing a dataset of vehicle usage based on position data gathered in project FUMA (Fleet telematics big data analytics for vehicle Usage Modeling and Analysis). A user-centered design process of a visualization tool which presents FUMA data for people working in RCA process was carried out. Interviews were conducted to gain insights about the RCA process and generate design ideas. PACT framework was used to organize the ideas, and Use Cases were developed to project a conceptual scenario. A low fidelity prototype was developed as design artifact for the visualization, and a formative test was done to validate the design and gather feedback for future prototyping iterations. In each design phase, more insights about how visualization of vehicle usage should be used in RCA were obtained. Based on this study, the prototype design showed a promising start in visualizing vehicle usage for RCA purpose. Improvement on data presentation, however, still needs to be addressed to reach the level of practicality required in RCA. Denna rapport undersöker hur RCA-processen kan dra nytta av positionsdata som samlats in i projekt FUMA (Fleet telematics big data analytics for vehicle Usage Modeling and Analysis).

Utmaningar i distribuerade projekt / Challenges in distributed projects

Larsson, Oscar, Winquist, Veronica January 2018 (has links)
In line with the development of information and communication technology (ICT), it has become increasingly common to undertake distributed projects. Therefore, this study's purpose is to investigate how project members describe their experiences of participating in distributed projects, as well as the challenges that they have been through. The study is based on a qualitative research method and is based on data collected from 9 open-structured interviews. The data has then been analyzed using an inductive and thematic analysis method. Furthermore, this report shows that the respondents of the study have experience in managing communication, culture and task challenges when working in distributed projects. These challenges address primarily human needs, such as community and motivation, but also how these can be influenced by the conditions (eg dependence and use of ICT) that exist in distributed projects

Bridging the generational gap : Designing internet services for technologically-naïve older people using familiar interfaces

Colledge, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
Despite advances made in modern electronic devices, their use by older people is significantly lower than for younger people. They experience difficulties using devices due to a combination of physical, cognitive and ‘generational’ differences. Many studies try to adapt devices to make them more usable, but they do not consider how older people feel in terms of attitudes towards technology or their existing habits. Seven participants were interviewed about their current use of technology, as well as their attitudes to modern technology, and a personal inventory was created for each participant. The interviews generated themes relating to how participants feel that technology is not made for them, barriers to their use, and generational differences as well as arguments against modern technology use and perceived negative aspects of technology. Some design considerations were created and illustrated using features from the most commonly used devices that suited the interviewees’ attitudes, behaviours and opinions.

Smart Africa : Patents and Standards in ICT, a roadmap for Africa in the digital world

robert, provinah January 2018 (has links)
The mobile revolution has had a huge effect on our lives in all spheres. To ensure its continued evolution patents have played a part in protecting rightsholders from infringement cases by implementers. Also, many companies in the ICT industry focusing on innovation have come together to create standards, which ensure interoperability and compatibility of devices whilst supporting an ecosystem that is beneficial for both innovators and implementers as well as the consumers. Despite challenges (hold-up and hold-out) arising, regulators and standards organizations have created policies to regulate the processes involved. This has seen the introduction of FRAND and other international agreements. Using 3GPP as an illustration, this thesis highlights the efforts that are poured in research and development to even come up with a set standard that is universally applicable. This thesis gives an analysis on the underlying principles and processes that allow for standardization. It focuses on the relationship between patents and standards and how a strong IPR system has an impact on the progress of technology innovation. This thesis will highlight the benefits that arise from an ecosystem that is predevelopment and analyses the legal cases that have been dealt with over the years. Several cases have been brought before the courts in different jurisdictions to address issues relating to standardization and the ruling have seen a change in direction on the way to approach FRAND. The landmark case Huawei v ZTE paved a way for Europe’s balanced approach on licensing agreements and now courts have realized the importance of both parties to actively participate in good faith negotiations. The same has happened in the United states where after eBay v MercExchange the courts are now realizing hold-out is equally detrimental as hold-up and can create complications in licensing. The courts are now reluctant in offering injunctive relief without efforts from both parties to perform licensing agreements. As the technological boom continues in an upward trajectory it is crucial now, more than ever for Africa to join in and leverage the available laws to benefit its SMEs and ICT industry and strengthen its IPR system. Legend has it that the stronger the protection of own technological know-how, the higher the likelihood to join formal standardization processes to leverage the value of the technological portfolios. The empirical findings establish that if African countries develop their IPR system, this can be a source of encouragement for innovators to engage in global standardization.

NARRATIVAS VISUAIS E SONORAS NA RESSIGNIFICAÇÃO DE SABERES / SOUND AND VISUAL NARRATIVES ROLES IN THE REESTABLISHMENT OF MEANING

Rosa, Elaine Isabel Souza da 18 January 2016 (has links)
The goal of this work is to demonstrate the value of students self-expression through visual and sound narratives, allowing an exploration of sense and reason. The work is focused on a participative action-research, developed with high school students, specifically grade 9th, in a total of 27 students from the public school system in the city of Santa Maria, RS. The research aims to answer the following question: What is the role of the individual in this socio-environmental context? This question leads to the search of a protagonist and co-authorship role in interpretation, creation and recreation of reality that fosters the development of autonomy, interdisciplinary and contextualization. This is achieved through the identification of themes using the research as a basis to build actions and find the answer related to the selected problem. The research was carried out in 2015 and its overall goal was to apply visual and oral expression and through them build perceptions and concepts that allows the expression of ideas and feelings, as well as establish actions through the use of mobile devices. The specific goals are: to identify environmental themes; to define the main environmental problems in the community we live; to come up with collaborative strategies to bring forth our reality for the better understanding of the environmental theme; to use the mobile phone as a supporter the collect and publish the data, to explore student s oral and visual expression through and to build strategies for the comprehension of the problem at hand as well their socialization with the local community. Mobile phones were used to register relevant data such as images, sound, testimonies, and also for internet research, proving that the use of technology in the classroom modifies the process of teaching and learning, giving value to the students and bringing new perspectives to the learning experience. The results obtained were: a lecture with the Veterinarian class from UFSM, the writing of a letter to the city hall informing them of the project underway in the school and in the community, as well as asking for support in the project s development. The writing of a final reflective text, the suggestions of solutions to the problem giving emphasis to the creation of a Facebook page to bring the groups suggestions together. The use of mobile phones, a device every day more present in our lives, is not only practical, multifunctional, portable and light, but is also allows faster access to information, which creates a link between the possibilities and conflicts that its use fosters inside the learning institutions. A proposta busca responder a questão: Qual é o papel do indivíduo inserido neste contexto socioambiental?
