The mobile device enabled smart locks, as they are often referred to, operate using either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This thesis has explored the use of a third emerging wireless technology called Near Field Communication (NFC) available in mobile devices such as smartphones. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is a relatively new technology that is on the rise and is included in almost every new mobile device. By leveraging Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile devices, a highly secure access control system can be achieved and developed taking advantage of the computational power of smartphones in comparison to traditional methods the business implications are huge, Several different authentication and encryption protocols, mobile operating systems and Near Field Communication (NFC) modes of operation where analyzed and evaluated. After considerations technical considerations the Secure Remote Password authentication protocol on top of Near Field Communication (NFC) card emulation (CE) scheme with the client application running on smartphones operating system (OS) was selected. This thesis shows that Near Field Communication (NFC) enables a mobile device to act as a key in a secure access control system (PACS) and as the user base for NFC grows larger so will the likelihood that we will come to see more of these types of systems in business and organizations.

Our research?s file is formed by pedagogical projects of technical and higher courses of this institution, seeking to understand what knowledge about the Portuguese language are operating in that speech. We assume the theoretical and methodological contributions of the pecheutiana theory of Discourse Analysis (DA), and Linguistic History of Ideas (LHI), mobilizing notions of ideology, memory, discursive formation, interdiscourse, intradiscourse, production conditions, historicity, temporality and paraphrase. We analyze six discursive excerpts (DEs) consisting of discursive sequences (DSs) cropped of the documents according to its regularities. In this corpus, we look at which knowledge are functioning and how it is constituted understanding the discourse about Portuguese language?s education in Vocational and Technical Education in institutional documents. We came to the realization that a useful language to work, taught to instrumentalized the subjetc-worker is formed at the confluence of knowledge of human development and vocational training. This language useful to work predominates in the discourse of the institution materialized in pedagogical projects. To reach this understanding, we analyze the functioning of the memory of Vocational and Technical Education and the Portuguese language?s education resonating in institutional documents that constitute our research?s archive. Thus, we understand that works in this discourse, technologic knowledge and grammatical knowledge, responsible for the imaginary of useful work language. We also understand the confluence of these meanings with others from contemporary discourses that bring knowledge of latest linguistic theories for speech. There is a confluence of knowledge, which is not only meeting, but which has the effect of tension between them. Tension between the same and the different, between memory and actuality. Thus, knowledge of contemporary theories of language?s education may converge with knowledge of instrumental?s education, grammar?s education. And a useful language to work in this place consists of junction.

This research focuses on young and adult subjects who cannot read or write, although they had had access to and attended schools in Natal/RN. The locus of the research are the Municipal Schools that develop the Youth and Adults Education program EJA, having representatives from the North, South, East and West zones of the city, in a total of 6 municipal schools. It analyzes these subjects' replies to the questions: "Why are there young and adults who attended school but still cannot read or write?", What are the exclusion situations they face by not being able to read or write?". From a dialectic view on the subject, the research's strategy for data collection is the semi-structured interview to collect the replies given by the interviewees; replies that are separated by analysis categories presented charts of ideas. The research's results are analyzed and lead us to the conclusion that the affective, organic, cognitive, social, political and pedagogical factors are mentioned by the subjects as reasons why they can not dominate the reading or writing skills. The youth and adults interviewed are not happy with their school failure; the reading and writing learning is something that eases their social inclusion into a society that privileges such abilities, and that with it they could avoid the social exclusion they faced at school, in the work place, at home, in church, at health centers, on the street, at their children's school and in public assistance institutions / O campo de pesquisa e estudos da educa??o ? vasto e rico, principalmente quando adentra-se no campo emp?rico da realidade social. Applying Psychological Theories of Personality, Identity, and Intergroup Conflict to Radical Violence: A Case Study of Extremist Behavior

Flynn, Sydney 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper aims to address possible psychoanalytical explanations for the heinous acts in which terrorists, particularly ISIS, engage. It focuses on Harold D. Lasswell’s principles of the id, ego, and superego as well as Tajfel and Turner’s social identity theory. Within the framework of these two theories, relevant psychological and social psychological theories are discussed in order to explore a possible connection between the psyche of violent perpetrators and their actions. By exploring these connections, I find that there may be more nuanced psychological explanations for these violent acts, which could lead to new methods of weakening perceived biases, intergroup conflicts, and extremist behavior.

No. of bitstreams: 1 RobsonOS.pdf: 527706 bytes, checksum: 215f631ef1e4979b7dcc88ec12d7b013 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-25 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The aim of the present work is to contribute to the teaching-learning process in Mathematics through an alternative which tries to motivate the student so that he/she will learn the basic concepts of Complex Numbers and realize that they are not pointless. Therefore, this work s general objective is to construct a didactic sequence which contains structured activities that intends to build up, in each student s thought, the concept of Complex Numbers. The didactic sequence is initially based on a review of the main historical aspects which begot the construction of those numbers. Based on these aspects, and the theories of Richard Skemp, was elaborated a sequence of structured activities linked with Maths history, having the solution of quadratic equations as a main starting point. This should make learning more accessible, because this concept permeates the students previous work and, thus, they should be more familiar with it. The methodological intervention began with the application of that sequence of activities with grade students in public schools who did not yet know the concept of Complex Numbers. It was performed in three phases: a draft study, a draft study II and the final study. Each phase was applied in a different institution, where the classes were randomly divided into groups and each group would discuss and write down the concepts they had developed about Complex Numbers. We also use of another instrument of analysis which consisted of a recorded interview of a semi-structured type, trying to find out the ways the students thought in order to construct their own concepts, i.e. the solutions of the previous activity. Their ideas about Complex Numbers were categorized according to their similarities and then analyzed. The results of the analysis show that the concepts constructed by the students were pertinent and that they complemented each other this supports the conclusion that the use of structured activities is an efficient alternative for the teaching of mathematics / O presente estudo visa apresentar uma contribui??o para o processo de ensino-aprendizagem em matem?tica atrav?s de uma alternativa que se prop?e a trazer uma nova motiva??o ao aluno para que este adquira as primeiras id?ias relacionadas ao conceito de n?meros complexos percebendo que estes n?o s?o destitu?dos de sentido.

Autenticação e comunicação segura em dispositivos móveis de poder computacional restrito / Authentication and secure communication in mobile devices with restricted computational power

Rafael Will Macedo de Araujo 31 October 2013 (has links)
Protocols for authentication and key establishment are fundamental parts in security implementations for electronic devices communication. In applications involving devices with limited computational power (such as smartphones and tablets) communicating with a server, the choice of efficient protocols that require a simpler infrastructure is essential. In this work we select and implement secure key agreement protocols in ID-based and Certificateless public key cryptography models on ARM processor platforms. We also compare running times, memory and network usage.

Abundance and predatory impact of killer whales at Marion Island

Reisinger, Ryan Rudolf 30 August 2011 (has links)
Killer whales are the oceans’ apex predator and are known to have important effects on ecosystems. At Subantarctic Marion Island, southern Indian Ocean, they have only been studied opportunistically, resulting in limited knowledge of their ecosystem impact here. This dissertation describes the prey and seasonal abundance, estimates the population size and assesses the predatory impact of killer whales on seals and penguins at Marion Island, using dedicated and opportunistic shore-based observations and photographic identification, from 2006 to 2009. During 823 sightings of killer whales at Marion Island (2006 to 2009) 48 predation events were recorded; in only 10 cases could prey be identified. Killer whales fed on fur seals, elephant seals and penguins. Constant effort (dedicated) observations (259 hours, 2008 to 2009) showed that killer whale abundance, which peaked in September to December with a secondary peak in April to May, is linked to the abundance of seals and penguins. Mark-recapture analyses were performed using nearly 10 000 photographs taken from 2006 to 2009. Following careful quality control criteria 37 individuals were identified and a population size of 42 (95% CI = 35-50) individuals estimated using the open population POPAN parameterization in the software program MARK. The analytical approach is more rigorous than that used in any previous population size assessment at Marion Island. Finally, the above data were integrated to assess whether top-down control of seal and penguin populations at Marion Island is generally plausible using a simple process of elimination. Based on published data I predicted the energetic ingestion requirements of adult male and female killer whales as 1 394 MJ.day-1 and 1 028 MJ.day-1, respectively. Expanding these requirements to the 37 killer whales photographically identified at Marion Island, the population requires 40 600MJ.day-1. Based on available energy density and mass data, I predicted the energy content of available seal and penguin prey and calculated the rates at which killer whales would consume these prey in various scenarios. Penguins and Subantarctic fur seals are relatively insensitive to killer whale predation owing to their large population sizes (10 000s to 100 000s), conversely, the smaller populations (100s to 1 000s) of Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals are sensitive to predation, particularly the latter as they have a high energy content (approximately 2 000 to 9 000 MJ). Populations of these seals are currently increasing or stable and I conclude that presently killer whale predation is not driving population declines, although they clearly have the potential for regulation of these smaller populations. Thus, if population sizes were reduced by bottom-up processes, if killer whale diet shifted, or if prey availability changed, top-down control by killer whales could become significant. This study provides baseline information for the informed management and conservation of killer whales at Marion Island, identifies avenues for further research, and provides a foundation for the continuation of structured and dedicated killer whale research at Marion Island. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Zoology and Entomology / unrestricted

Caractérisation de la contamination des systèmes aquatiques par les psychotropes : développement d'une méthode de référence incluant une démarche multifactorielle de hiérarchisation / Characterization of the contamination of aquatic systems by psychotropic compounds : development of a reference method including a multifactorial selection approach

Brieudes, Vincent 18 April 2014 (has links)
Pharmaceuticals and their residues belong to the so-called “emerging” pollutants for which no current regulation is applied regarding their presence in the environment. Monitoring the contamination of aquatic resources by these kinds of micropollutants is a necessity in order to anticipate potential effects regarding human health and ecosystems. In this context, data quality (traceability and comparability) is compulsory so as to take better decisions regarding policies to be driven. Psychotropic compounds, which are widely consumed, display a great concern in that field. This thesis aimed at characterizing occurrence of psychotropic compounds in the environment and putting forward metrological tools insuring accuracy, traceability, comparability as well as representativity of the measurement results. To that purpose, a SPE-LC-MS² multi-residue method has been developed for a selection of psychotropic compounds and other commonly consumed drugs. Method limits of quantification were in the range of ng.L-1 which enabled to characterize their occurrence in several surface waters and treated wastewaters. Concurrently, usage of integrative samplers was evaluated and applied on the field in different locations. Occurrence levels of 68 selected compounds were established by implementation of this complementary strategy in aquatic systems. Furthermore, results from measurement campaigns were used to rank studied compounds into a short list of interest. Finally, a reference method using isotopic dilution and mass spectrometry (DI-MS) was developed for the characterization of 24 psychotropic compounds in surface waters. Expanded uncertainties (k=2) inferior to 10% were obtained. Last be not least, implementing this method to environmental analysis emphasized the importance of sampling related uncertainties regarding to global measurement uncertainties.
