The popular in Puerto Rico : archive and repertoire in the performance of bankarization and the identitarian

Corrada, Rosa María 02 July 2012 (has links)
At the turn of the 19th Century, Puerto Rico, like other places of the world, served as a stage for the inauguration of a new form of organization of capitalism, dominated by finance capital. I name this process: bankarization. During the 19th Century, the bankarization was made visible through the foundation of different banks; among these was Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. This dissertation examines how Banco Popular, founded in 1893, has acted as protagonist in the bankarization of Puerto Rico. It also maps how in Puerto Rico, Banco Popular, together with the government, strategically appropriates the popular/lo popular through its will to performance, thereby producing the state identification effect. This dissertation studies the performance of Banco Popular and its intervention in three stages: 1) the economic elite, from its foundation, the different banking mergers and the construction of the ciudad bancaria. 2) the governmental, by showing how porous is the border between the public-government and the private-bank. 3) the popular, by making visible the different moments of performance that show the formation of the banca-pueblo as an effective mean to make capitalism “popular.” In addition, by paying attention to a television video series by Banco Popular that began in 1965 and serve as a strategy to produce the identification effect. This research combines ethnography and performance analysis to generate a critique about the intervention of capital and the State in the production of the national imaginary and the assumption of a common Puerto Rican subject. It examines the particular proposal about identity and the performative means that Banco Popular chooses in its intervention to produce the identification effect. I propose that Banco Popular validates and promotes Hardt and Negri’s identitarian formula of “love of the same” by referencing the racial mix that silences, homogenizes, harmonizes and banalizes. This scenario serves to promote particular political and economic interests which in turn reproduce social relations of power. / text

It seeks to verify how the discursive modality sets a presentation and interaction way of the subject on the social, displacing axiologies in identitarian and subjective building processes. Four social networks platforms were chosen as analysis corpus: Facebook, Sonico, MySpace and Twitter due to their thematic of promoting relationships among friends or followers in visibility and connection s ambiences, reaching national and international scene. With the data gathering, between 2010 and the first two months of 2013, a group of profile s narratives detaching enunciation paths was observed on these social networks interaction interfaces. While discursive models these ones base themselves on different values, showing comparative potential. From the invariants and variants traits survey, in the inter-relation among the meaning generative process levels, the research identified visibility s construction as a pregnant value. In the path of making yourself visible, strategies of subject s exposition which indicate to belonging forms and presence ways can be observed. Homologation to visibility s regimes pointed to the identification of two great enunciative processes: self-promotion and socialization processes, unfolded in an intertwined fashion under the crossing of the discourses of the celebrity and of the exhibitionism, pervaded by mediatic and mediatization s discourses. These ways of presence build themselves inside interactional practices which were dealt with considering the formation of interaction and sense regimes according to Landowski and the discursive interactions, developed by Oliveira. As a result we observe the establishment of a complex programming model that governs the established presence ways, subsuming the accident and being fed by adjustment and manipulation. The programming domain showed how autobiographic profiles built in the analyzed social networks platforms reveal themselves at the contradiction and contrariety as antiprofiles. As theoretical basis were also taken A. J. Greimas, J-M. Floch and F. Thürlermann. Regarding cyberculture studies, were taken as support P. Lèvy, M. Castells, A. Lemos, A. Primo, R. Recuero and E. Trivinho. Digital social networks as nowadays significant practices, under specificity of discursive semiotics, enhance the studies on identities construction inside new ways of communication / A pesquisa investiga a composição narrativa e discursiva dos perfis autobiográficos nas redes sociais digitais.

Juopperi, Jesse January 2019 (has links)
This study aims to describe the strategic political communication of the Identitarian Movement in Austria (in German known as Identitäre Bewegung Österreich) and concentrates on identifying means of persuasive language on the homepage of the movement, which is known to be nationalistic and critical towards migration. The study is based on a corpus containing a selection of blog entries, as well as a sample of images published on the homepage, and is carried out using a qualitative method combining discourse linguistics, systemic-functional linguistics and multimodal theory. The analysis sets off by describing the field component of systemic-functional theory and proceeds to examining tenor and mode. The focus will be specifically on firstly, investigating a) discourse participants and the processes they engage in and b) interaction between the implied sender and recipient in the verbal material; and secondly, describing how these meanings are reproduced visually in the image sample used. The findings suggest that the movement not only strives to portray itself as powerful and authoritative but also relies on means of solidarity in order to convince the recipient of its message. More specifically, it is shown that the migrant participants are discriminated and depersonalised whilst a close synthetic relationship is established with the implied reader, i.e. the homepage visitor. Furthermore, the movement makes an effort to picture itself as a representative of numerous groups and interests in society. By doing so it apparently attempts to simulate a representative discourse, in order to present the xenophobic stance it agitates for as a majority opinion. The analysis shows also that these practices can be seen throughout the corpus, that is, in the verbal texts as well as in the imagery.

[de] FREIWILLIGE, DIE MIT FLÜCHTLINGEN ARBEITEN: NOTFÄLLE UND SINNKONSTRUKTIONEN DURCH ERZÄHLUNGEN / [es] VOLUNTARIOS QUE TRABAJAN CON REFUGIADOS: EMERGENCIAS Y CONSTRUCCIÓN DE SIGNIFICADO A TRAVÉS DE NARRATIVAS / [en] VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK WITH REFUGEES: EMERGENCIES AND CONSTRUCTION OF MEANING THROUGH NARRATIVES / [pt] VOLUNTÁRIOS QUE ATUAM COM REFUGIADOS: EMERGÊNCIAS E CONSTRUÇÕES DE SENTIDOS ATRAVÉS DE NARRATIVAS

CARLOS GUSTAVO CAMILLO PEREIRA 07 March 2024 (has links)
[en] The objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the productions of meanings that are (de)constructed by volunteers who work in order to assist people in refugee situations at the Refugee Service Center, maintained by the Associação São Vicente de Paulo (ASVP) and located in neighborhood of Botafogo, south zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Since we tried to understand the meanings promoted by volunteers from different perspectives, the data was generated, through qualitative interviews, with a psychologist, a children s entertainer and a Portuguese teacher as foreing language, all offering voluntary assistance to refugees. In order to achieve our objectives, we made use of the theoretical-methodological postulates of the Narrative Analysis framework, since, through this tool, we can promote investigation into how volunteers evaluate the refugees they serve; the motivations for (dis)continuity in offering the care practice they perform; as well as analyzing the way in which volunteers develop their identity practices, which, in this work, are understood as performative, fluid and emerging during the interactional flow. The data observed here point to voluntary work as a socio-interactional arena in which disparate meanings and systems of coherence are operationalized, which permeate the religious, educational, legal and clinical discursive domain.
