Nostos: On Recollecting Loss and the Physical Manifestation of Loss

Huang, Stephanie M 01 January 2016 (has links)
This paper examines nostalgia in photo-poetry book Nostos, and nostalgia’s existence as a theoretical global condition arising from displacement, looking at nostalgia specifically not as a yearning for home, but a yearning for a lost sense of feeling at home. It traces the lineage of image-text hybrid art practices and examines the significance of conveying meaning through both synergistically. It studies the psychoanalytic process of transforming loss into object, or absence into presence, ultimately using the object as a lens to view oneself and the way in which nostalgia manifests itself.

Remembering Hiroshima : Hadashi no Gen from a Trauma Theory Perspective

Juslin, Kajsa January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, a semi-autobiographical manga, Hadashi no Gen, written by Nakazawa Keiji, is analyzed through the lens of trauma theory. By using trauma theory, I hope to shed light on in what way trauma might affect narrative techniques and in what way the narrative techniques convey trauma and emotion to the reader. For the analysis “Trauma Fiction” by Anne Whitehead was chosen and categories based on her findings were made. The categories are: Intertextuality, repetition, dispersed and fragmented narrative voice, memory place, choiceless choice and fantastic. I discovered that all these themes, observed in other trauma fiction as well, are more or less used as a narrative tool in Hadashi no Gen. Further I observed that by conveying traumatic events and emotions through a combination of images and language is a powerful tool and might even be more effective than standard prose text

In this work the text-image alignment was applied in news sites. A lot of news do not make clear the correspondence between elements of a text and elements within the associated image. In this scenario, text-image alignment arises with the intention of guiding the reader, bringing clarity to the news and associated image since it explicitly explains the direct correspondence between regions of the image and words (or named entities) in the text. The goal of this work is to combine Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision (CV) techniques to generate a text-image alignment for news: the LinkPICS aligner. LinkPICS uses the YOLO convolutional network (CNN) to detect people and objects in the image associated with the news text. Due to the limitation of the number of objects detected by YOLO (only 80 classes), we decided to use three other CNNs to generate new labels for detected objects. In this work, the text-image alignment was divided into two distinct processes: (1) people alignment and (2) objects alignment. In people alignment, the named entities identified in the text are aligned with images of people. In the evaluation performed with the Folha de São Paulo International news corpus, in English, LinkPICS obtained an accuracy of 98% precision. For the objects alignment, the physical words are aligned with objects (or animals, fruits, etc.) present in the image associated with the news. In the evaluation performed with the news corpus of BBC NEWS, also in English, LinkPICS achieved 72% precision. The main contributions of this work are the LinkPICS aligner and the proposed strategy for its implementation, which represent innovations for the NLP and CV areas. In addition to these, another contribution of this work is the possibility of generating a visual dictionary (words associated with images) containing people and objects aligned, which can be used in other researches and applications such as helping to learn a second language. / CNPQ: 133679/2015-2

Estabelecimento do tópico discursivo em processos de escritura em ato de histórias em quadrinhos por díades recém-alfabetizadas / Establishment of the topic discursive in processes of scripture in action of comics for dyads newly literate

Silva, Dennys Dikson Marcelino da 09 December 2011 (has links)

Forensic Analysis of Images and Documents

Ruiting Shao (18018187) 23 February 2024 (has links)

This thesis involves three topics related to forensic analysis of media data. The first topic is the analysis of images and documents that have been created with a scanner. The goal is to detect and identify scanner model from the scanned images/documents. We propose a deep learning system that can automatically learn the inherent features of the scanned images. This system will produce a scanner model identification and a reliability map for a scanned image. The proposed system has shown promising results in the forensic analysis of scanned images. The second topic is related to forensic integrity of scientific papers. The project is divided into multiple tasks, data collection, image extraction, and manipulation detection. We have constructed a dataset of retracted scientific papers that have been verified to have issues with integrity. We design and maintain a web-based Scientific Integrity System for forensic analysis of the images within scientific publications. The third topic is related to media document analysis. Our goal is to identify the publication style for media document, aiding in the potential document manipulation. We are mainly focusing on image-text consistency check, and synthetic tweets analysis. For image-text inconsistency check, we describe a system that can examine an image in document and the corresponding text caption (or other associated text with the image) to check the image/text consistency. For synthetic tweets analysis, we propose a system to detect and identify the text generation models and paraphrase attack models.

Keeping the faith : Devotional images and text in the service of Catholic confessionalization and piety in late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Münster

2014 April 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between image and text in four devotional books printed in Münster Germany between 1589 and 1660, and shows how this relationship supported the Catholic confessionalization programs of the three prince-bishops of those years. These confessionalization strategies, though varied, all emphasized the reinforcement of religious conformity leading to the consolidation of the authority of the ecclesiastical and secular leadership of the prince-bishop. The success of the confessionalization strategies of the three prince-bishops through this medium were the result of three contributing factors. The first of these was the printer of the works, the Raesfeldt printing house, which held a printing monopoly from all three of the prince-bishops. The second factor was the Jesuits who were responsible for education and indoctrination in Münster and shaped a significant portion of this literature. The last contributing factor was the readers, a group with a relatively wide spectrum of abilities in literacy who bought, read, and exchanged the books. Among the readers were a significant number of women readers who took up the confessional message of these books, wound it into their devotional lives, and strove to perpetuate Catholic piety within their homes. Although conventional wisdom suggests that images played a minor role in such programs, images were crucial elements in the communication of Catholic orthodoxy. This thesis shows how images were an equal partner in the conveyance of a nuanced Catholic confessional message in which the text directed a specific Catholic viewing and reading experience. The majority of the images do not carry an intrinsic Catholic message but rather present a traditional visual vocabulary that established an unbroken lineage between the Catholic Church and the pre-Reformation Church. These images provided the standard recurring theme around which the confessionalization message of the text was fashioned. As a distinctly regional literature, these devotional works reveal a localized Catholic response to Protestant polemic. They give valuable insight into the influence of confessionalization programs on regional devotional practices. The lasting effects of these confessionalization programs are still visible in Münster’s Catholic character today.

Andrén, Sara January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the Swedish 19th century family magazine, Svenska Familj-Journalen, and the interaction between bourgeois attitudes, science, and depictions of animals. My main purpose is to demonstrate how image-text divergences can discover ruptures between 19th century bourgeoise ideology and science. The study consists of a selection of illustrations and texts, the majority being popular zoology depictions that were published in the magazine between 1877–1882. By using nature-culture oppositions as well as art historian Sonya Petersson’s concept of the counteractive illustration, I am able to elucidate differences between texts and images. The texts and images are subsequently analyzed by relating them to contemporary scientific discourses, as well as to the early Swedish animal welfare and nature conservation movements. The results of this study are that image-text divergences reveal 1) that images of animals could depict the animal as such, rather than as a symbol of bourgeois ideals, 2) an insecurity in the magazine’s attitudes toward Darwin’s theory of sexual selection, illustrating circumstances where the magazine chose to adhere to its ideological dispositions rather than accept Darwinian consensus, 3) that the magazine, in publishing texts that were critical of wild life exploitation, diverged from its progress oriented narrative, and that its use of images counteracted these messages.
