Learning in public: information literacy and participatory media

Forte, Andrea 06 July 2009 (has links)
This research examines new systems of information production that are made possible by participatory media. Such systems bring about two critical information literacy needs for the general public: to understand new systems in order to assess their products and to become adept participants in the construction of public information spaces. In this dissertation, I address both of these needs and propose a view of information literacy that situates the information literate as both consumer and producer. First, I examine a popular example of a new publishing system, Wikipedia, and present research that explains how the site is organized and maintained. I then turn my attention to the classroom and describe three iterations of design-based research in which I built new wiki tools to support publication activities and information literacy learning in formal educational contexts. I use the rhetorical notion of genre as an analytic lens for studying the use and impact of these new media in schools. Classroom findings suggest that the affordances of a wiki as an open, transparent publishing medium can support groups of writers in building a shared understanding of genre as they struggle with an unfamiliar rhetorical situation. I also demonstrate how writing on a public wiki for a broad audience was a particularly useful writing experience that brought about opportunities for reflection and learning. These opportunities include transforming the value of citation, creating a need to engage deeply with content, and providing both a need and a foundation for assessing information resources.

Mouren, Renan 28 November 2017 (has links)
Between informed space and geographical spaceWe observe a wide range of territorial e-mediation’s concrete fields, statutes, functions and uses, according to socioeconomics, political, geographical or ecological contexts. This diversity reveals an epistemologically productivelink between digital, geographical and informized spaces. This thesis aims to circumscribe and deepen thosearticulated, sometimes divergent, complex dimensions, keys parameters of action and territorial development.Indeed, in the face of the major issues, socio-economic, ecological, societal and multicultural that weigh more orless uniformly today on the world, these dimensions of digital territorial mediation, are essential and necessary tobuild specific development models in which digital is one of the most significant. Moreover the higher the territoriale-mediation obeys a logic of branching, from the global to the local, the more it favors the use of territorial data thatare easy to track, capture, analyze and merchandise by the Data-Broker. This relative homogenization and thisqualitative impoverishment of the numerical data available on the territories, can induce new political normativities, limit the theoretical-practical researches on the social and usages innovations and lead to a numerical cooling of theterritories. This central notion of territorial e-mediation, is a « Boundary Objects » operates in this thesis as a amatrix for interpreting territories from which a theoretical-practical frameworks is designed. This thesis collect, analyse, reference, documents, publications, theoretical works, professional contributions, policies and practices onthis link between digital, geographical and informized spaces that is shifting the centre of gravity of territoriestheorical interpretations, proportionate to mutations and représentations that are facing them. For a number of yearswe experiment this framework with the Seine-Saint-Denis (Paris) territory, based on an interventions outline whichcombines stakeholders and actions, technical an social innovations in order to give meaning to the various forms ofaction, in view of sustainable development and common good. Distant territories and from different cultures couldunder certain methodological conditions through e-mediations, use this kind of framework to experiment andexpress their developpment models, comparisons, detailed analysis, the context of emergence, detailed comments,« traits » or solutions. Those mediations would permit

Making citizens of the information age : a comparative study of the first computer literacy programs for children in the United States, France, and th / Façonner des citoyens à l'âge de l'information : une étude comparative des premiers programmes de formation en informatique pour enfants aux Etats-Unis, en France, et en Union Soviétique (1970-1990)

Boenig-Liptsin, Margarita 16 November 2015 (has links)
In this dissertation I trace the formation of citizens of the information age by comparing visions and practices to make children and the general public computer literate or cultured in the United States, France, and the Soviet Union. Computer literacy and computer culture programs in these three countries began in the early 1970s as efforts to adapt people to life in the information society as it was envisioned by scholars, thinkers, and practitioners in each cultural and sociopolitical context. The dissertation focuses on the ideas and influence of three individuals who played formative roles in propelling computer education initiatives in each country: Seymour Papert in the United States, Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber in France, and Andrei Ershov in the Soviet Union. According to these pioneers, to become computer literate or computer cultured meant more than developing computer skills or learning how to passively use the personal computer. Each envisioned a distinctive way of incorporating the machine into the individual human’s ways of thinking and being—as a cognitive enhancement in the United States, as a culture in France, and as a partner in the Soviet Union. The resulting human-computer hybrids all demanded what I call a playful relationship to the personal computer, that is, a domain of free and unstructured, exploratory creativity. I trace the realization of these human-computer hybrids from their origins in the visions of a few pioneers to their embedding in particular hardware, software, and educational curricula, through to their development in localized experiments with children and communities, and finally to their implementation at the scale of the nation. In that process of extension, pioneering visions bumped up against powerful sociotechnical imaginaries of the nation state in each country, and I show how, as a result of that clash, in each national case the visions of the pioneers failed to be fully realized. In conclusion, I suggest ways in which the twentieth-century imaginaries of the computer literate citizen extend beyond their points of origin and connect to aspects of the contemporary constitutions of humans in the computerized world.

TEMATIK OCH MYTBILDNING I VIKTOR PELEVINS GENERATION ”П” OCH EMPIRE V

Lewander, Gustaf January 2018 (has links)
This thesis offers a thematic analysis of Victor Pelevin’s Generation ”П” and Empire V. The objective is to determine which themes can be regarded as central when the novels are compared to one another, and how these themes function in the two novels. This analysis shows that in Generation ”П” and Empire V, Pelevin constructs two overarching, parallel myths – the myth of Babylon and the myth of the Word, building a narrative that is solidly anchored in contemporary discourse. The study concludes that these myths are not built to serve as narrative explanations of, or answers to, the issues explored in the novels. Instead, the myths serve as vehicles for an open-ended, exploratory process, which might never be finally concluded. In contrast to previous research, this study contends that the construction of these myths may be the novels’ primary purpose and that through these myths the novels present the reader with a fictional framework, through which to regard the real world.

Do patrimonialismo à repersonalização do direito autoral : harmonização dos direitos fundamentais à informação, cultura e educação e o uso alternativo de obras protegidas / From patrimonialism to the repersonalization of copyright : harmonization of basic rights to information, culture and educationand use alternative of protected works.

Rêgo, Sidney da Silva 27 July 2010 (has links)
Exacerbation of heritage features throughout the history of copyright brought serious consequences for their development. The copyright laws of historical progress in the scenarios with international and national economic traits notably eventually provide man, creator of intellectual work, a secondary role. Its activity has always been important, but there was a predominance of the equity, having. With the bourgeois revolutions of the eighteenth century began a process of modification of certain ideals, policies for inclusion in the letters of the states of certain fundamental rights. The coexistence of two systems of copyrights in the world ended up further back from the moral prerogatives of the authors. Yet the international legal texts now recognize them, although they are not fully respected. At a later stage there is a change of direction in the understanding of legal systems, is now setting up the foundation for the interpretation of copyright, to emphasize a repersonalization of its institutes. Our purpose in this study is to question whether it is possible to reconsider the legal institutions copyright, even with the new information society, and if possible, today, to meet the social expectations for the achievement of fundamental rights to information, culture and education, placed in check with this new social formation. We will analyze such issues based on the principle of human dignity for in the end, demonstrate the possibility of harmonizing these rights with the alternative use of works protected by copyright laws, taking as an example, the creative commons.

Therefore, the copyright became a strategic element to the social, economical, political and cultural configuration of the Information Society. The history of copyright, including the creation of the current international regime for the protection of intellectual property rights, reveals the link established between this category of protection and international political economy. At the same time, new information and communication technologies allow diversification in creating process and access to knowledge, as well as enable the making of new devices which enhance the protection of intellectual assets. This scenario led to the questioning of the forms of regulation of copyright that goes through a process of reconstruction of meaning. The contradiction that is established in the Information Society is emphasized in the field of scientific production and communication, since it involves legitimate social interest as well as principles common to the scientific community. The present study aims to examine this contradiction in the international scenario considering the normative aspects linked to the international copyright protection, evaluating and comparing documents and international regulatory actions of the following international organizations: UNESCO, WIPO and WTO. The objective is to verify, by comparative analysis and data from interviews with key informants, the level of openness of organizations to dialogue with civil society. It will analyze the specific case of the inclusion of Open Access on the Agenda for Development administered by WIPO, and the effects of these debates on the international regime for the protection of intellectual property, as well as on the reconstruction of the legal framework of copyright in Brazil.
