Development of a simulation model to evaluate the performance of a mining industry supply chain using the collaborative strategy VMI(Vendor Managed Inventory).

Gabriel Rossoni Silva 15 April 2010 (has links)
In this paper we proposed a simulation model of an integrated supply chain with the adoption of VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) strategy between a company of the iron ore and some of its strategic suppliers. The model is based on a framework for evaluating VMI systems adapted from Sarpola et al. (2007) together with the configurations of supply chains proposed by Holmström et al (2003), which measures the performance of the supply chain using 3 levels of integration. It is a literature review of the concepts of the strategy of VMI, inventory policies in integrated systems, sharing and degree of visibility of information throughout the supply chain. The results allowed to perform a quantitative analysis of the benefits of VMI, which are considered as stochastic demand, random lead time, products with different characteristics, information sharing, partial visibility of the supply chain, lots of variables, calculation of safety stocks based on information from client orders, actual customer demand and forecasting errors.

A contract can not be completely efficient when one side has more information than another, giving rise to a problem of asymmetric information. There are two important problems of asymmetric information: adverse selection and moral hazard, which appear in the Lender-Borrower relationship. Governments have some ways to reduce information asymmetry in the credit market and encourage lending operations in the country. Lender legal protection and the existence of credit bureaus are institutions that contribute to the development of the credit market. The motivation of this research is to analyze the impact on credit market, of the availability of credit information from borrowers, coupled with the importance of the lender legal right. Analyses are conducted to clarify the effects of these institutions on banking spreads, credit default and credit to GDP. Going beyond the literature reviewed, this study empirically examines the effect of bank concentration in information sharing. Another distinctive point of this dissertation is the use of panel technique for the research. The results were: identification of the influence of bank concentration on the depth of information shared, suggestions about the role of public bureaus opening the credit market and indication of complementarity between the exchange of credit information and the legal right. Finally, this study explored nonlinear relationships of the variables identifying the levels that they bring significant impact to the credit market.

[en] APPLICATION OF THE MODEL FOR SCM OF ARAGÃO TO SUPPLY CHAINS OF AN INDUSTRIAL GAS MANUFACTURER / [pt] APLICAÇÃO DO MODELO PARA SCM DE ARAGÃO NAS CADEIAS DE SUPRIMENTOS DE UM FABRICANTE DE GASES INDUSTRIAIS

MARCO AURELIO DILASCIO GUIMARAES 30 January 2007 (has links)
[en] The globalization of competition has forced the organizations to seek and to implement new forms to create competitive advantages. Nowadays, as competition occurs effectively between supply chains and not between isolated companies, SCM (Supply Chain Management) appears as a new frontier to be explored. Within this context, this dissertation has the objective to apply the model for SCM proposed in Aragão et al. (2004) to analyze the supply chains based on key-dimensions for a successful SCM. The key- dimensions considered in this model are: business process integrations, identification of the supply chain key-member, sharing of information and measures of performance related to the supply chain of an industrial gas manufacturer in the Brazilian market. This manufacturer is considered in this dissertation as the focal company of the supply chain. Five key-members of this chain are also included in the analysis. As a result the analyses, it is possible to conclude that the focal company develops different ways to manage its chain depending on each of its key members.

Automated error reporting : Business-to-business aspects to consider for a software provider / Automatiserad felrapportering : Viktiga faktorer för en mjukvaruleverantör att beakta gentemot företagskunder

Alnefelt, Patrik, Malmgren, Petra January 2009 (has links)
Computer errors are a constant problem for software providers. To completely avoid bugs has proven very difficult even though computer software goes through rigorous testing before released. One of the challenges for developers is recreating errors that end-users experience. User-submitted error reports can often be of help for developers to localize and fix bugs. However, the reports often vary in quality depending on the user's experience and the effort they put into writing the report. Instead of relying on manual error reports, some software providers have equipped their software with automated error reporting functionality. These programs are set to collect important information about the computer and the software in the event of a crash. There are pros and cons with both automated and manual error reporting. The research that has previously been done in the field of error reporting has mostly focused on the situation where private persons are senders and corporations are receivers. This report addresses the setting where both parties are corporations, which brings several new aspects to the problem. The five main topics this report focuses on are: customer attitude, which data to send, privacy, user interaction and feedback. A study has been conducted at the ERP system provider IFS in Sweden where interviews with employees and customers have been performed. Interviewees in the customer companies have been primarily ERP and application managers. The results of the study show that companies are less concerned than what the literature suggests even though the attitudes differ some depending on line of business. Conclusions are that a high degree of configurability of what is sent in the error reports and the level of user interaction is needed for companies to accept automated error reporting.

The Impact of Internet of Things unification with Project Management Disciplines in project-based organizations

Percudani, Pietro, Batrawi, Mohamad January 2017 (has links)
The greatest advantage of Information Technology (IT) is its ability in entitling personnel to achieve their goals. Allowing personnel to grasp knowledge and skills they weren’t aware of previously, rendering to a sense that it’s all about potential; as expressed by former CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer. Internet of Things (IoT) data, according to ORACLE (2017), provides insight from new data collected and provides solutions. Thus, allowing businesses to achieve new innovative services at a more efficient and productive manner while reducing the risk factors. Proving that the connections between the organisation and devices are securely connected, analysed, and integrated simultaneously with IoT data. Project Management (PM) the leading discipline in management that benefits enterprises through actual and operative management of change through its systematic approach of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, Testing & Commissioning and finally Handing Over to the client the project; managing various types of projects with various drivers of change and uncertainty. (Sawyer, L. 2016). As significant as technology has become in our lives, this study aims in highlighting the importance of Internet of Things and the synergic implementation of Project Management disciplines in project-oriented organisations. It also explores the challenges, barriers, and benefits of IoT in synergy with PM disciplines. The paper also considered one of the most crucial elements of any organization or business, people, fixating on project managers and how the role of a project manager is affected in the innovative project oriented organizations.

Regional Security, Early Warning and Intelligence Cooperation in Africa

Hutton, Lauren Angie January 2010 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This dissertation explores the potential contributions of the mechanisms for early warning and intelligence sharing to regional security in Africa. The Continental Early Warning System (CEWS) and the Committee on Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA) are centrally concerned with the dissemination of information to enable decision-making on continental security. The main focus of the dissertation is on the manner in which the information generated by the CEWS and CISSA can contribute to regional security. In order to analyse the potential contribution of the CEWS and CISSA to regional security, a sound theoretical framework is proposed so as to explore how and why states choose to cooperate, as well as addressing multifaceted cooperation and integration at inter-state, government department and nonstate levels. Constructivist interpretations of international cooperation are utilised to explore the role of ideas, meanings and understandings in shaping behaviour. The focus is placed on the manner in which interaction as provided for by the CEWS and CISSA can shape understandings of reality and potentially impact on the definition of actors' interests. This is based on the assumption drawn from security community and epistemic community theory that, enabling the creation of shared meanings and shared knowledge there is the potential for both the CEWS and CISSA to have a positive influence on the choices that stakeholders take in favour of peaceful change. / South Africa

Platforms as Enablers for Industrial Symbiosis

Kosmol, Linda 08 November 2021 (has links)
The quest for sustainable industrial development demands the transition from the current linear to the circular economy. An inter-firm approach to drive this transition to a circular economy at a local or regional scale is industrial symbiosis, which refers to the exchange or sharing of underutilized resources between industrial plants to reap economic and environmental benefits. There is a widespread consensus in the scientific community on the merits and (anticipated) benefits of information systems and information technology (IT) to support and accelerate the emergence of industrial symbiosis by aiding all involved parties. Though the conceptualization and development of IT, in particular IT platforms, to support industrial symbiosis has gained momentum in recent years to facilitate industrial symbiosis, current research provides little insight and scarce guidance for the design, diffusion and continued operation of IT-supported industrial symbiosis. Especially, experiences and viewpoints of (potential) users and providers of such tools are hardly captured. On the one hand, this thesis elaborates on the status quo of research as well as practice of IT-supported industrial symbiosis and on the other it examines the potential contribution of IT platforms to facilitate industrial symbiosis and its IT support, by applying perspectives of knowledge management and platform as well as ecosystem theory to the field. Based on the gathered insights and a design science research process, this thesis proposes the Digital Industrial Symbiosis Ecosystem concept as proposal to overcome current issues and facilitate industrial symbiosis and the respective platforms.

Facing threats by sharing information for natural resources management / Faire face à des menaces en partageant l’information pour la gestion de ressources naturelles renouvelables

Paget, Nicolas 03 October 2016 (has links)
I explore how information sharing (IS) and natural resources management (NRM) are linked. To determine this link, I focused on oyster farmers, actors sensitive to water quality and impacted by a virulent virus. Those actors implemented and use diverse IS artifacts. Those artifacts are meant to face potential threats. Realizing this focal point led to develop the threat concept. They are defined by the <A,C,I,D,E> (Actors, Characteristics, Infrastructure, Decisions, Environnement) model. They are organized along two axes: internality and excludability. Framing oyster farmers’ situation with this concept allow a characterization of stakes for IS artifacts to tackle threats.I used the ENCORE framework for qualitative assessment of IS artifacts impacts and a MAS for a quantitative one. The research shows that they have various goals, media and contents; can increase reflexivity or have little to no impact. Those changes are linked to artifact creation process.

Towards an Integrated Supply Chain trough Vendor-Managed Inventory : A case study of the spare parts distribution at an international manufacturing company / Mot en Integrerad Distributionskedja genom Vendor-Managed Inventory : En fallstudie av reservdelsdistributionen på ett internationellt tillverkningsföretag

Danielsson, Maria, Nilsson, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
During the last decade, research related to Supply Chain Management has got a great deal of attention. The focus has especially circulated around supply chain integration and centralisation due to the increasingly competitive global market. The aim of this thesis has been to investigate how the supply chain performance in international manufacturing companies could be improved. By having a qualitative approach, this thesis contributes to earlier conducted research by providing a holistic view on supply chain management. This is by the authors considered crucial to manage the complexity of supply chain management and supply chain change. The specific context examined in this thesis concerns the spare parts distribution of large international manufacturing companies. The methods used during the case study consisted of a thorough literature review, external interviews and workshops with experts within supply chain management and supply chain change, and several interviews with employees at different levels and functions at the focal company, Toyota Material Handling Europe. Two of the interviewed external experts were managers at the supply chain function at Volvo Construction Equipment and Ericsson. To answer the main research question, three sub-queries have been examined. The first one concerns what main areas of difficulty that can be identified in the current supply chain of the focal company and in international manufacturing companies in general. The second sub-query concerns which supply chain policies that could be used to solve identified areas of difficulty. Finally, the third sub-query concerns which prerequisites that could be identified to successfully manage change within supply chains. The results imply that Information and Inventory Management are the main supply chain related areas in need of improvements at the focal company, as well as in international manufacturing companies in general. Thereby supply chain performance could be improved if performance within these areas is enhanced. To solve these two identified areas of difficulty, four theoretical supply chain policies related to supply chain integration have been examined due to complexity, need of investments during an implementation, as well as each policy’s possibility to solve the identified areas of difficulty. The supply chain policy Vendor-Managed Inventory was considered the most appropriate policy for the focal company to implement. As a consequence, an evaluation of the focal company’s readiness to implement a Vendor-Managed Inventory policy was also conducted by using a supply chain readiness framework developed by Niranjan, Wagner and Nguyen (2012). Based on the literature review, including the theoretical evaluation of the appropriateness of implementing Vendor-Managed Inventory, together with the findings from the external expert interviews, the focal company is recommended to implement a Vendor-Managed Inventory strategy. However, the focal company is also recommended to see such an implementation as an opportunity to later investigate the possibility to also include large suppliers in the collaboration. This would increase the level of integration among supply chain members further and thereby secure the company has the possibility to receive the advantages associated with sharing information (including Points-of-Sales data) with all supply chain members. From a theoretical perspective the conclusion is that Vendor-Managed Inventory, with its focus on supply chain integration through collaboration and information sharing among supply chain members, is considered appropriate to implement when companies want to improve performance in one or all of these areas. Furthermore, the usage of a consignment stock agreement might be an appropriate complement to Vendor-Managed Inventory due to the international context. However, the authors suggest that international manufacturing companies should strive towards including large suppliers in the supply chain collaboration to increase performance further. Thereby they should move towards capabilities promoted in the supply chain policy Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment, which advocate a higher level of integration than Vendor-Managed Inventory. Another main finding pinpoints the importance of a well-formulated and communicated vision in the beginning of a transformation, to manage supply chain change successfully. As a consequence, the authors of this thesis expanded the supply chain framework developed by Chopra and Meindl (2010) to also include vision. In addition, legal has been added as an important supply chain driver since it affects supply chain possibilities and decisions. The added parts are considered critical for the framework to be applicable in an international and rapidly changing business environment. Furthermore, the authors suggest the extended framework should be used to support companies evaluate the current and a desired future supply chain in accordance with examined change management literature.

The role of global data identification standards for supply chain visibility: the case of GS1

Semianiaka, Natallia, Silina, Ekaterina January 2012 (has links)
Purpose. Supply chain visibility is among the top concerns expressed by many supply chain leaders. While the traditional enablers of supply chain visibility are information sharing, IT implementation, and relationships between supply chain partners; the role of global supply chain standards as an integral part of each of these enablers is often underestimated. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the adoption and applicability of global supply chain standards within the provisions of supply chain visibility among various supply chain designs. Methodology. With the aim of theoretical replication, three case studies within the retail industry were conducted. Axfood and IKEA cases were analyzed as examples of opposite types of supply chain design and as companies with different degrees of implementation regarding their global data identification standards. The Clas Ohlson case was analyzed to illustrate a company with open paths in regards to its adoption of future global supply chain standards. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were performed directly with company representatives as well as with GS1, which is one of the assignors of this project. Finally, an analytical model for the potential adoption of global standards was developed. Findings. The results of case analysis clearly illustrate that global data identification standards are one of the pillars of supply chain visibility. Different practices of global standard adoption in different supply chain designs are explained by a different need for supply chain visibility among various supply chains. Moreover, the higher the degree of adoption of global standards, the higher the possibility of gaining strategic benefits. Practical implication. The model developed in this research aims to help logistics and supply chain managers estimate the need for supply chain visibility within their supply chains, and to also assess the potential adoption of global data identification standards within their supply chain practices. Originality/value. This study contributes to theory in such areas of research as supply chain visibility, standardization in supply chain management, and supply chain design. The main contribution is made to the resource-based view (RBV) theory, which according to supply chain visibility can be seen as both a strategic resource and a tool for efficiency optimization. A new term in supply chain design which suggests many-to-many and exclusive supply chain classifications is proposed, as is a framework for assessing the need for supply chain visibility. An analytical model for the potential adoption of global standards is also developed. / Research project “The role of global standards for supply chain visibility” at the Industrial Engineering and Management department of KTH
