Evaluating ecological integrity and social equity in national parks : case studies from Canada and South AfricaTimko, Joleen Allison 05 1900 (has links)
There are concerns that many national parks worldwide are ineffective at conserving biological diversity and ecosystem processes, are socially unjust in their relations with Indigenous communities, or both. This dissertation asks: can national parks protect ecological integrity and concurrently address social equity issues? It presents empirical results of a systematic evaluation of six case study national parks in Canada and South Africa. Purposive sampling was used to select the six case study national parks. Data sources included State of the Park Reports; park ecological monitoring data; archival data; and semi-structured interviews with park biologists, managers, and Indigenous members of park co-management boards.
Status and trend assessments and effectiveness evaluations of park ecological monitoring data were used to evaluate how effectively the parks addressed three ecological integrity criteria. Results show that all six parks effectively addressed the priority indicators for which they had monitoring data. However, the effectiveness ratings of each park decreased when all indicators, including those identified as priorities but lacking monitoring data, were analysed. This indicates that the parks had generally identified more priority indicators than they were actually able to address (for reasons including lack of budget or trained staff, managerial challenges). Thematic coding of semi-structured interview and archival data, and the assignation of numerical ratings to these data, were used to evaluate how effectively the parks addressed three equity criteria. Results show that all but one of the case study parks were equitable, parks with more comprehensive co-management and support from neighbouring Indigenous groups were more equitable than parks with lower levels of co-management, the parks with settled land claims were not necessarily more equitable overall, and a few parks were found to be co-managed in name only. The overall results of this evaluation demonstrate that parks effective at protecting ecological integrity can also successfully address social equity, but that further efforts to integrate these two realms are both possible and necessary. A logical starting point would be to build upon those existing integrative processes already institutionalised in many parks and protected areas: the co-management and integrated conservation and development efforts.

Trust within teams : the relative importance of ability, benevolence and integrityBeatton, Douglas A. January 2007 (has links)
Trust between team members is important: Research has shown that teams with higher levels of trust have a propensity to be higher performers. This study built on contemporary trust theory by examining initial interpersonal trust development between a new team member and a newly formed work-team using experimental rather than correlation-based survey methods. Undergraduate students from a metropolitan Australian university participated in a vignette experiment examining the effect of teams with varying levels of Ability, Benevolence and Integrity on trust development. It was hypothesised that these antecedents of trust do not have similar effect on our Intention to Trust as is currently depicted in Mayer, Davis and Schoorman's (1995) integrative model of organisational trust. Their model is developed by hypothesising that the type and magnitude of the information we receive about a trustee moderates the relationship between our Intention to Trust and its antecedents. Initial examination of the traditional scales identified overlaps that needed clarification. This was completed by informing existing scales and the vignette manipulations with the context specific information that emerged from the thematic analysis of structured interviews. Subsequent analyses of the questionnaire data used ANOVA and Structural Equation Modelling techniques. In testing the hypotheses, Ability was found to be most salient in the development of Intention to Trust. This research contributes methodologically by developing a vignette-based experimental method that improves the reliability of existing trust scales. The study contributes theoretically by further explaining the salience of the trust antecedents and practically by identifying that the judgment and decision-making of new workteam members can be distorted by halo bias wherein they ignore the Benevolence traits of team members of a group that exhibits high levels of Ability.

Patienters erfarenheter av hur den personliga integriteten respekteras i vården : En kvalitativ studie baserad på Critical incident metoden / Patient’s experiences of how privacy is respected in healthcare : A qualitative study based on the Critical incident techniqueJohansson, Maria, Karlsson, Sandra January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study was to describe patient’s experiences of how privacy is respectedin health care. Every human being has the right to be respected as an individual and notbe subjected to interference in the personal sphere. Since this is not always respected inhealth care, it is interesting to gain knowledge about patient’s experiences. Aqualitative method was used in the study. By using the critical incident techniquepatient’s positive and negative experiences of personal integrity in health care wasreviewed. Nine informants participated and contributed eighteen stories. The materialwas analyzed qualitatively. Three superior themes with five subthemes found. Overall, this phenomenon is about to be respected as a human being. The superior themes are tobe heard, to be seen and to be understood. The result shows that if the personal privacywas not respected, the patient’s felt violated and an unnecessary suffering was therebycreated of health care. The study has implications for health care because the integrityis a fundamental need for patient’s experiences of health and suffering.</p>

Delaktighet – en patients rättighet : En litteraturöversikt om patienters erfarenheter av att delta i bedsiderapportering / Participation – a patient’s right : A literature review on patients' experiences of participation in bedside handoverKarlsson, Matilda, Hubertsson, Therese January 2015 (has links)
Background: Bedside handover is part of the process towards a more person-centred care. The handover that takes place at the patient's bedside aims to get patients involved in the exchange of information between nurses at the change-of-shift. Communication at the handover is an important part of how the patient gets an understanding of their situation but also serves to increase patient safety. In 2015 new laws were established about patient participation in care, which resulted in a stronger requirement of participation. Aim: To describe patients' experiences of participation in bedside handover. Method: A literature review has been performed. Ten studies that furthered the aim of describing patients’ experiences with bedside handover were selected. The Friberg analysis model was applied as a basis for the analysis. The concept of nurse-patient relationship was used as the theoretical basis of the study. Results: The results depict patients' experiences of bedside handover through three categories; 'Getting information through bedside handover', 'Patient participation in bedside handover' and 'Privacy and confidentiality'. Discussion: The results were discussed with relevant literature and the concept of nurse-patient relationship. The results showed that patients felt involved and safe related to the participation in bedside handover. This is confirmed by the nurse-patient relationship that aims to provide the patient’s feeling of safety. Patients also experienced a threat against their integrity with a risk of other patients hearing sensitive information. The importance of nurses' discretion and to speak quietly in a multi-private room to protect patient integrity and confidentiality is confirmed by relevant literature.

The OPQ 32i (Occupational Personality Questionnaire 32 Version i) as a predictor of employee theft in a financial institutionNobre, Michelle 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Industrial Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The impact of employee theft in organisations is far reaching and includes financial as well as non-financial costs. Nowhere is the reduction of theft more important than in financial institutions. Research has shown that the second best predictor of counterproductive behaviour such as employee theft was integrity. Integrity is a concept that has a long and contentious history. Being a difficult construct to define, it has been subject to much debate. From a business standpoint, there is now considerable interest in linking integrity to organisations as well as individual persons. Research has further shown that various personality dimensions are predictive of counterproductive behaviours such as theft. As such personality measures have been used increasingly as integrity tests to detect such behaviour.
The purpose of this study is to examine the ability of the Occupational Personality Questionnaire 32 version i (OPQ 32i) to predict employee theft in a financial institution. Research has shown that individuals with lower levels of integrity are more likely to indulge in counterproductive behaviour which may be manifested in employee theft. Specific dimensions of the OPQ under study are conscientiousness, emotional control, achievement orientation, rule following and conventionality. In line with current research it was expected that these five personality dimensions would differentiate those individuals who commit theft in a financial institution from those who do not.
A review of current literature is undertaken, focusing on the concept of integrity, the history and background of integrity testing, the classification of integrity tests, as well as the use of personality dimensions in assessing integrity. The review further includes a discussion of criticisms and controversies that surround the application of Integrity tests, recommendations for the application of integrity testing, employee theft as a criterion, and the impact of employee theft on organisations. This is followed by a discussion of theft as being a result of individual personality traits versus being a result of situational factors. Recommendations are also made to organisations on how to limit employee theft. Finally, the OPQ32i (Occupational Personality Questionnaire 32 Version i), as the choice of measurement tool is discussed, as are the psychometric properties and previous research conducted on the tool.
The current study was an empirical one with a quantitative, concurrent validity approach. A sample of 116 individuals from a financial institution was divided into two mutually exclusive groups based on detected theft. 22 Employees had been dismissed due to theft (Group 2) and 94 were still employed (Group 1). General statistics were completed followed by a two-tailed independent-samples t-test and a measurement of effect sizes with a view to conduct a Canonical Discriminant Analysis. The results of the study suggest that the conscientiousness, emotional control, achievement orientation, rule following and conventionality dimensions of the OPQ32i were not able to differentiate those individuals who committed theft in the financial institution under study from those who did not commit theft. Thus, in the financial institution under study, the research conducted does not provide conclusive evidence for the OPQ32i as a good predictor of employee theft. This conclusion needs to be interpreted with care given the limitations of the research.
The results are discussed with specific reference to response style of applicants, integrity as a construct, the impact of situational factors on employee theft and difficulty of theft as a criterion. Finally limitations and recommendations for future study are discussed.

To parents with Instagram... : A qualitative study comparing how parents reasons about social mediaWimalm, Sara, Värnström, Sanna January 2018 (has links)
This paper is about how parents view usage of instagram when it comes to publishing pictures of their children. We want to emphazise problems that revolves around the fact that children can't raise their own voice on the matter. We have chosen to do an analysis where we compare how our respondants reasons based on a survey that is also an integral part of this paper. In order to get a better idea of how medias affect todays society, we have used Mark Deuze’s work about invisible medias and Nanna Gillberg’s writings about todays attention driven society. We also discuss digitalization and globalization which are important aspects of how the society develops. With this information, we will draw conclusions as to our respondants usage of Instagram and the publishing images of their kids. Our research question is how parents reasons about publishing pictures of their kids on Instagram or not. We also research if the parents has had a dialogue regarding publishing pictures of their kids on instagram or not. The result we got from our research is that parents care for their childerns integrity on social media. We could also show that parents share the same views about publishing pictures of ther children on Instagram. The majority of respondants in our study have had a dialogue about this subject.

Le principe d’indisponibilité du corps humain : limite de l’usage économique du corps / The principle of unavailability of the human body : limit of the economic use of human bodyCatto, Marie-Xavière 01 December 2014 (has links)
The principle of unavailability of the human body has been thought in two different ways : as a prohibition of selling or giving someone, as a prohibition of causing a breaching physical integrity. We defend that the principle of unavailability of the human body still remains under these two apsects, but not exactly within the same meaning. It takes the form of a violation-saving principle, which prevents from all unnecessary violations of bodily integrity, and which aims not to prohibit but to avoid the bodily integrity violations, by its external side, and to limit those, by its internal side. It also takes the form of a principle of non-negociation, which prohibits that pressures may be exercised onto someone to make a person accept an infringement on her body. These two aspects extend in public law the principle of unavailability which already existed in private law. This principle is however threatened by the health requirement, more and more subjective, and by the interference of profit-making interests. These two logic allow some violations of bodily integrity for reasons unlinked to health, but for economic ones.

Investigation of decommissioned reactor pressure vessels of the nuclear power plant GreifswaldViehrig, Hans-Werner, Altstadt, Eberhard, Houska, Mario, Mueller, Gudrun, Ulbricht, Andreas, Konheiser, Joerg, Valo, Matti 05 June 2018 (has links) (PDF)
The investigation of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) material from the decommissioned Greifswald nuclear power plant representing the first generation of Russian-type WWER-440/V-230 reactors offers the opportunity to evaluate the real toughness response. The Greifswald RPVs of 4 units represent different material conditions as follows:
• Irradiated (Unit 4),
• irradiated and recovery annealed (Units 2 and 3), and
• irradiated, recovery annealed and re-irradiated (Unit1).
The recovery annealing of the RPV was performed at a temperature of 475° for about 152 hours and included a region covering ±0.70 m above and below the core beltline welding seam.
Material samples of a diameter of 119 mm called trepans were extracted from the RPV walls. The research program is focused on the characterisation of the RPV steels (base and weld metal) across the thickness of the RPV wall. This report presents test results measured on the trepans from the beltline welding seam No. SN0.1.4. and forged base metal ring No. 0.3.1. of the Units 1 2 and 4 RPVs. The key part of the testing is focussed on the determination of the reference temperature T0 of the Master Curve (MC) approach following the ASTM standard E1921 to determine the facture toughness, and how it degrades under neutron irradiation and is recovered by thermal annealing. Other than that the mentioned test results include Charpy-V and tensile test results. Following results have been determined:
• The mitigation of the neutron embrittlement of the weld and base metal by recovery annealing could be confirmed.
• KJc values of the weld metals generally followed the course of the MC though with a large scatter.
• There was a large variation in the T0 values evaluated across the thickness of the multilayered welding seams.
• The T0 measured on T-S oriented SE(B) specimens from different thickness locations of the welding seams strongly depended on the intrinsic structure along the crack front.
• The reference temperature RT0 determined according to the “Unified Procedure for Lifetime Assessment of Components and Piping in WWER NPPs - VERLIFE” and the fracture toughness lower bound curve based thereon are applicable on the investigated weld metals.
• A strong scatter of the fracture toughness KJc values of the recovery annealed and re-irradiated and the irradiated base metal of Unit 1 and 4, respectively is observed with clearly more than 2% of the values below the MC for 2% fracture probability. The application of the multimodal MC-based approach was more suitable and described the temperature dependence of the KJc values in a satisfactory manner.
• It was demonstrated that T0 evaluated according to the SINTAP MC extension represented the brittle fraction of the data sets and is therefore suitable for the nonhomogeneous base metal.
• The efficiency of the large-scale thermal annealing of the Greifswald WWER 440/V230 Unit 1 and 2 RPVs could be confirmed.
