Mobility in crisis : Sub-Saharan migrants' journeys through Libya and Malta

Achtnich, Marthe January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a multi-sited ethnography of sub-Saharan migrants' journeys through Libya and by boat to Malta. Its overall aim is to understand how undocumented migrants make and conceptualise their complex journeys through shifting regulatory landscapes. The thesis draws upon, and consequently develops, understandings of migrants' mobilities, both within anthropology and wider migration studies. Over the course of their journey through Libya and Malta, sub-Saharan migrants move across uneven topographies in place and time, from the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert to the turbulent Mediterranean Sea, from situations of detention to everyday houses in society, from the hands of smugglers to the arms of the law. To this end, the thesis is guided by three wider objectives. First, investigating how different forms of mobility are part of migrants' journeys. Second, examining how migrants navigate such journeys. And third, understanding the ways in which migrants encounter and negotiate borders en route. These objectives are engaged with through a multi-sited ethnography tracing migrants' journeys through five contexts: sites of confinement and detention in Libya, everyday spaces of Libyan society, the boat crossing, and finally the legal framework in Malta. These varying contexts prompt comparisons across particular sites, processes and practices on a journey, highlighting elements that might be generalized and those that are specific. The ethnography is presented in five chapters, their sequence mirroring the overall journey of migrants through Libya and Malta. Unpacking the journey and mobility, this thesis develops a set of interrelated arguments. First, it deconstructs the notion of migrants as a homogenized group of people on a linear trajectory aimed at Europe. It goes beyond typologized understandings of migrants, such as legal, illegal, refugee or asylum seeker, that fix migrants into static categories linked to the state or specific crisis situations. Second, it front-stages the journey as a focal point of inquiry, thereby addressing a theme under-acknowledged in the anthropology of mobility and migration. This enables a move beyond state-centric and isolated understandings of migrants' mobilities to one that accounts for the multiplicity of journeys and processes en route. Third, this emphasis on the journey highlights the importance of thinking through relations involving multiple actors and bordering encounters. Taken together, these arguments advance important insights into the anthropologies of mobility and migration. The thesis makes wider contributions by conceptualizing an 'architecture' of the journey, constituted by three inter-related components: mobility, navigation, and borders. They offer a more nuanced understanding of migration and mobility in (post-)conflict settings, one that not only has implications for understanding sub-Saharan migrants' journeys through Libya and by boat to Europe, but one also relevant to other crisis contexts as well.

Costa, Amanda Lacerda January 2014 (has links)
The idea of circularity, of unity and cyclical renewal is a frequent theme in the works of Caio Fernando Abreu and sets up a narrative structure with the same pattern. This structure, which reproduces the cycle of life, is reflected in fictional texts narrating the story of a character-protagonist, since the transition from childhood to adolescence and until maturity. This work proposes that the set of the writer's fictional work can be read as a narrative unity which plot is the trajectory of a character in the formation of his individuality, his conscience and his literary vocation. By focusing on the individual, their experiences, encounters and disagreements, dramas and joys, he composes a human emotional radiography of his time in a period of nearly four decades. In addition to the issues exposed, and for them as well, the study intends to highlight the relevance, timeliness and quality of Caio's work, by addressing universal and perennial themes that transcend his historical moment and for his unique and refined style in the art of writing. The Author has passed away in 1996 and his books continue to be reissued, including unreleased material, new translations of his books are being published, as well as e-books, in Brazil and abroad. The fact that he has been conquering so many young readers of the XXI century attests to the vitality of the work of this master of ingenuity and art. To investigate and describe the ways in which the narrative unity is performed, the theoretical background are the essays by Ricardo Piglia, conferences and lectures by Jorge Luis Borges, theories of Novel of Formation or Bildungsroman, Joseph Campbell's research on The Hero's Journey or Monomyth and other additional studies.

Migration : A clandestine trip to Spain in Those who wait  in Fatou Diome

Chincócolo, Noemia Bernardete January 2018 (has links)
Fatou Diome describes in Celles qui attendent (2013), the reasons of clandestine journey of Lamine and Issa. The story of the novel happened in Afrika, in Niodior in Senegal and in part of Europe, in Spain. Diome also focuses on four women of Niodior Island: Arame, Bougna, Daba and Coumba. The objectives of the dissertation are to study and to translate Diome's novel by analyzing the ideas she presents on the clandestine journey and the impact  of migration of Africans to Europe. The research question is: How does Diome present  in the novel of Celles qui attendent, the stakes of migration? To answer the question we analyze  the following themes: The traditions and the conditions of women, the clandestine journey, the clandestine life, those awaiting, the effects of migration and the youth. The methodology of the work is to analyse the novel Celles qui attendent (2013), using the theories of Simone de Beauvoir. Documents on studies on migration and undocumented are developed in the thesis (Migrationsverket 2018). The analysis shows that the economic situation of the women greatly impacted on te journey of the two young men in the novel. / nej

Kvinnors levda erfarenheter efter viktminskningskirurgi : Ett nytt kapitel i livet / Women's lived experiences of weight loss surgery : A new chapter in life

Alke Nilsson, Karin, Darius, Hanna-Marie January 2018 (has links)
Background: Obesity is a growing problem worldwide, more and more surgical procedures are conducted every year to reduce obesity among the population. Complications resulting from obesity can adversely affect women's fertility, giving them a greater reason to undergo bariatric surgery. When the benefits of a surgical procedure outweigh health risks, an alternative solution to the problem may be bariatric surgery. Being responsible for nursing care the nurse has an important function in the process following bariatric surgery. Therefore, it is important to consider the experiences that these patients have in order to increase knowledge and understanding. Aim: Describe women's lived experiences after bariatric surgery. Method: Analysis of seven narratives in the form of blogs to study women's lived experiences. Result / Discussion: The result is presented in two main themes and three subthemes. The main themes are presented in a body of change and a change in everyday life. Subthemes are presented in other prerequisites in a lighter and healthier body, difficulties afterwards and adapting to a new everyday life. Conclusion: It is important that patients undergoing bariatric surgery to receive the right information and support to achieve lasting results and increased quality of life. Further research on how the nurse can develop the care of these patients is necessary as more and more people undergo bariatric surgery.

From Curb to Launch : Explore the pre-launch, ground experience for space tourism in 2040

Lee, Benjamin January 2018 (has links)
We are at the dawn of the next chapter of manned space flight, and space travel will soon be within reach for the majority of the humanity, not just the elite. The imminent launch of Virgin Galactic's first commercial service this year, soon to be followed by companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, means that space tourism will quickly go from one individual every few years to dozens, perhaps hundreds of new space tourists annually. Everyday civilians going to space for the purpose of tourism will have fundamentally different needs than professional astronauts going up to space for days or month at a times for work and research. To make space travel within reach of the masses, space tourist will need a different and simplified process compared to traditional astronauts. This thesis created a user-centered service that allows companies to handle the increasing number of private individuals going to space. The service not only prepares the customer for the space flight, but also provides an experience that will last a lifetime, that will be shared with others, and in the process perhaps inspire a new generation of human progress and collaboration. The result is a snapshot of the overall service, illustrate the user experience in an immersive, virtual environment. As part of the exploration, an immersive and very effective new method of user experience testing is developed as contribution to the field of Interaction Design.

The poetics of space in the works of Sylvie Germain : when the real is igniting

Magnavaca, Mara 15 May 2017 (has links)
The space, the place and the landscape permeate the heroic journey in the works of Sylvie Germain to the point of upsetting the hero in his relation to exteriority. The protean aspect of the heroic environment engages the analysis towards a preliminary distinction between a primitive space on the one hand and a transformed place on the other. The study proposes to reveal the phantasmagoric spaces born of places and spaces strongly connoted. The imaginary landscapes, which constitute the second part of our study, assimilate many mythological references which participate in the narrative success. The imaginary spaces, specified by their intertextual charge, open in a complex and highly referential way the creation of Sylvie Germain’s spaces. This complexity is reflected in the physical and intellectual paths of heroes. In this way, the author paradoxically creates her own textual space, to which she gives a significant place in the novels. Finally, the examination emphasizes the movement, which characterizes the aesthetic of Germain, and which proposes a narrative singularity. It is to the textual spaces that we are led. The final interrogation questions the disappearance of the geographic referent when the place is less and less accompanied by a history, a location or a name. The spaces traversed, studied, fantasized, urban, natural, invite reflection to undertake a topographic taxonomy in tie and tension with the stratification of the heroic journey. If the place, the space or the landscape treated in our research are at the heart of a author’s writing process in the imagery of the soil to the rooted spaces, the narrative wandering, marked by the abandonment of spatial precisions in the last stories, interrogates the author about its present relation to space and retrospectively on its function in previous creation.

The phenomenon known in school, we assume the perspective, is a process that involves the production of ourselves and students, while it produces changes in learning environments in school. This research on the meanings of school for student learning, i ask myself the following question: - As students in an experience of inventive production of images, transform ways of perceiving the learning processes in school? A theoretical and methodological perspective we adopt is the intervention research we organize a production environment for a group of 10 students who meet digital technologie. The production data in the survey happened based on the route indicated commented by Jean Paul Thibaud (2000) in which we take as empirical field entries, autonarrativas occurring in the course of experience with images method. The sensitive environment of Jean Paul Thibaud, it becomes interesting because it participates in the organization of which we'll call photographic route. This author gives access to a sensitive approach in dealing with the environment where students meet with technical objects to produce something that involves the circumstances of learning in school. The theoretical network will be expanded with the construction of Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela (2001) , scientists who built the prospect of Biology of Cognition , more directly the concept of autopoiesis and explanations arising on the circularity of the living - learning processes . To address the mode of understanding the technologies and technical objects rely on the work of Gilbert Simondon (1958 , 1989) and also on the path of learning with inventive images , with studies of Deleuze (1995) , Kastrup (2012) , Roland Barthes (1984) , Lucia Santaella (1998) , Philippe Dubois (1994) and Michel Serres (1993) . These scholars are important because they favor an innovative approach to technology and / or working with images. On the significance of the photographic image as a living field of language, students developed concepts, reinvented learn in school, which was constituted ways of intervening in reality. The tessitura of networks of conversations with students in workshops potentiated the spaces of knowledge about the phenomenon of learning in school, the circumstances that often deny the legitimacy of the subject. The production of students with images and conversation networks allowed to observe cognitive changes produced when the images and explain what they sought to do this emerged. As a result of the work we distinguish, in a journey of photographic production, students might mean the different spaces of the school, distinguishing the experiences that create barriers to knowledge and those who perceive themselves as authors in learning pathways / Esta pesquisa analisa processos que emergem em espaços de autoria dos sujeitos estudantes em uma experiência de produção com objetos técnicos fotográficos numa escola pública de Mossoró/RN.

Srovnání cest Gilgameše a Abraháma / The Journeys of Gilgamesh and Abraham: A Comparison

Nash, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
Few can claim to have never heard of Abraham or Gilgamesh. In terms of renown, the two are so rooted in our cultural awareness that it is highly unlikely that they will ever be truly forgotten. But whilst there have been many publication analyzing one or the other, few have ever attempted a side by side comparison of the duo. Therefore we shall not focus on introducing both characters, but try to see where their key differences lie. Since a complete comparison of every individual motive would be too broad for the purpose of this work, we are going to focus on three particular concepts: the hero's journey, immortality and relations to the divine. The first of these is also a brief introduction of the concept itself, since along with its author Joseph Campbell, it is a rather obscure topic on czech academic grounds. The second and third concepts are closer to an analysis of the cultural and religious settings and norms relevant for the authors of both texts.

Portes, Audrey 30 March 2018 (has links)
The digital revolution is taking place in a climate of distrust. Consumers and citizens often have a negative judment of digital practices (collection and data exploitation, etc.). Officials are calling for more transparency to surpass the current trust crisis. But will this principle of transparency be enough to restore trust in the digital environment? The question of transparency arises significantly today because of the risks of customer drift and manipulation. It also arises because of the changing communication modes which are now multiform, multidirectional and instantaneous. This research explains the role of perceived transparency of digital practices in the way we apprehend the customer relationship. A qualitative exploratory study on two samples validated the multi-dimensionality of the perceived transparency construct (objectivity, clarity, openness) using the perceptions of 16 consumers and 12 managers. An online quantitative study (ad hoc panel of 445 respondents) conducted on the perceptions of Amazon customers, an e-commerce pure player, leader in the field and pioneer in the massive exploitation of data (recommendation engines , customization, etc.), has helped to 1) develop a measurement scale of perceived transparency, 2) understand how the customers’ digital transformation had a role in the perception of transparency and 3) determine the influence of perceived transparency’s dimensions on trust building and commitment. A qualitative post-survey study was finally conducted to discuss with managers the implications of this doctoral research.
